    Very similar to my 3 cylinder generator. Mine's about to tick over 10,000hrs after 4 years of constant use.
    Unfortunately 3 cylinder engines vibrate which is why there's that offset counterweight on the crankshaft pulley. It's the nature of them - all they can do is manage the vibration. They get a fore-aft rocking couple and that's where the vibration comes from. Fuel economy is usually really good. Mine's 5.5kva and at full load only consumes about 2.2lts/hr. At light load it's a waste of fuel but consumes only about 800cc/hr which isn't too bad.
    Somehow you'll have to try and keep the battery cool.
    I'm on my 5th battery in 4 years and an auto electrician told me running the generator like I often do for 16 hours at a time is hell on any battery that is enclosed because of heat. It kills them.
    They rigged up some 300a cables and now the battery is outside in the weather and everything is back to normal. This battery is about 5x the size of the original and about 10m away but been good for the last 12 months.
    I reason when the Cummins is running constantly the batteries are going to suffer similarly to mine but even faster.
    Carry a spare lift pump. Remember lift pumps can't actually lift very high at all on the suction side.
    Ideally the lift pump would be at the bottom of the fuel tank. On the pressure side they can lift fuel fine. Mechanical governors try and compensate for the lack of fuel but stupid things start happening with frequency regulation and it gets very hard to diagnose.
    In a previous post I mentioned about a load bank for generator fault diagnosis. 10 minutes on the load bank and I discovered my 3rd lift pump was dying. Load banks also great for burning wet stacking soot out of diesel generators.

    Dame, don't get rid of the little gen set. Reconfigure with the top of the Pelican case and use as a mobile generator. I'm sure some of your clients will eventually need it.

    I wonder if that slow ship is performing (edit: apparently, it's called "bar sweeping") a depth survey where they pass over every part of the bottom with a horizontal bar hanging from two chains or poles. It's something often done in channels, canals and ports so that every section of the bottom within a marked area has been physically checked to a certain depth. The survey vessel passes over the entire area multiple times, with the bar lower and lower. When the bar eventually touches something on the bottom, that depth becomes the defined depth for the entire area (often outlined with a dashed line on charts). Unless someone dumps crap or a boat sinks within the area, the depth on the chart can be considered 100 % safe within an area that has been surveyed with that method.

      I can understand the concern with Tally Ho. That’s a HUGE rebuild. Brupeg is maybe not as extreme. We’ve put around one metric ton of welding wire into the boat over the years. But she is maybe 95% original steel with the rear cabin being the only large modification we have done away from original.

    Shouldn't you have two generators????

    • @ProjectBrupeg
      @ProjectBrupeg  3 місяці тому

      Eventually yes but we can only do what the shoestring budget allows. For now it’s this genset only and we will be adding another down the road when we can fund that.

  • @WaterfrontJustin
    @WaterfrontJustin 4 місяці тому +3

    If you got that much funding help for the electrical, why didn't you just get an 18,000 dollar 50kw marine diesel genset from PDGenerators or somewhere and just be done with that chapter?

    • @ProjectBrupeg
      @ProjectBrupeg  4 місяці тому +3

      Because that’s not what the boat needs. A single massive genset would be underloaded 99% of the time and wouldn’t last long. What Brupeg needs is the 5kw solar integrated into a large battery bank and a medium sized single phase genset for all other times the solar and batteries can’t supply the boat. We also need the large genset for the rare scenario that the main engine and gearbox can’t be used and we need to limp home. The chances are that situation won’t ever happen but we need to plan for it. So yes we need the big genset but not right now, right now we have a new system design that will solve all immediate challenges and allows us to hit the road with a reliable boat

    Damien, you do not pay Trevor enough for the jobs you assign him. He has now earned the name Fire-Catcher. Because of the way you were jumping up and down to release the deck plate, you are now known as Stomper. Birk should be known as The Fluid One because of the way he glides between his different jobs. Jess should be known as the Assigner because she draws up the schedule and tells everyone what to do. In my opinion the Assigner is the most important person on board and is known to you as yes my Darling. I so enjoy your episodes, you both have such a great channel.

    • @ProjectBrupeg

      Not with this genset but we will be adding another larger three phase genset dedicated to the get home motor at a later stage

    • @andyhastings5950
      @andyhastings5950 4 місяці тому +1

      Then why waste the money on this one? Your fast running out of space in the engine room.

    • @ProjectBrupeg
      @ProjectBrupeg  4 місяці тому +1

      Nope. We have space for both and they do two very different jobs so one can’t do both roles. The large genset is three phase and while we can take a single phase off that genset to power the boat, it’s a massively unbalanced load and the genset is hugely underloaded. That’s why the smaller genset does that job and the big one will only power the large get home load

  • @stevedunford7632

    Could you use thick nylon mounts for the generator. To lessen the vibration to the hull. Have a couple of plugs straight from the generator. For a light and for a backup sump pump. So even if the main board power goes down. There is still usable power off the generator. 🤔
