Caoimhe can be pronounced Qwee-va or Kee-va. Neither Darcy nor Quinn is a traditional Irish name. The Irish alphabet doesn't actually have a Q or a Y in it. Also you're right about k always being the anglicised form as Irish doesn't have a k in it either. Never heard of the name Breacán but the á means that the a should have an aw sound so it should be Bra-cawn. Again with Rónán the á should be pronounced like aw so Rownawn but Rónan without the á so Rownan is also common. Rory the anglicised version is pronounced differently to the Irish/Scottish versions of the name. Also the main spelling you chose is pretty uncommon. It's more usually Ruairidh or Ruairí (which are both pronounced Rur-ee). Fionn isn't pronounced Finn, it's more like Fyunn with the y being pronounced like 'yuh'. Hard to explain but sounds very unlike Finn. Still good job though, I'm an Irish person who lives in Ireland and speaks Irish so obviously I'm going to be picky. Don't want anyone to name their kid something that's a mispronunciation of an Irish name lol.
My name is Oisín, pronounced O-sheen,it means little Dear (as in the animal). There's a legend surrounding it too. What I like about Irish names is that they all have meanings.
i have 2 of these names (Ciara Áine) and honestly i used to hate them so much because of how hard everyone found it. since im irish living in england, like you said i get sierra a lot. i loved all of these names. irish names are so beautiful
I'm working on an Irish name video as well right now! I have an Irish baby name book that I'm working through, but it's like reading a university textbook it's soooooo detailed! I'm constantly flipping to the back to read the pronunciation! I love Irish names!
I loved watching this video and love the idea of more people using traditional Irish names they are so beautiful! A lot of the names you mentioned actually have multiple pronunciations, especially depending on what part of the country you are from. I'm from down south and some of the ways we say these names are FIONN pronounced FYUNCAOIMHE mostly KWEEVA And also a name similar to Braonán which is sometimes pronounced BRAYNAWN, is the name Breanainn which is the Irish form of Brendan and is pronounced BRAYNIN, P.S. you're voice is so relaxing could listen to it all day !!
Thank you for the video!! My cousins name is Killian and I love it it's so unique and cute!! I also have a friend named and I also think it's a wonderful Irish boys name!!
I can't believe that it has taken me this long to find this video! I'm so glad I did because now I'm crushing on Mallaidh! I love finding new Irish names to love!
I prefer Breccan because I think Breccan and Declan are beautiful twin boy names. Also, I prefer Eoin because of the actor who played the Irish character TC Callahan from the Night Shift if Irish and his name is Eoin Macken. Do you know which spelling is more popular in Ireland? I'm very curious
I know I'm really late with this comment but what do you think of the sib-set Maeve Alexandra, Aoife Piper, Grainne Marie, and Aishling James? I love your videos! Please respond.
I really love Irish names. When I first started liking baby names, I loved Aoife and bought a personalized 'Aoife' pen.... and I thought people would think it was my name if I used it...! One of my top 5 girls name is Orla (Irish spellings Orlagh or Orlaith)
Aoife is such a great name! I love your pen story - I totally would have done something like that as a kid! There is a young woman name Orlaith in the baby name community. Great name as well!
YAY BRENNAN ;) ;) I really am fond of the originally spelling of my name "Braonán" - actually I'm nearly always fond of the original Irish spellings haha =)
I have Irish ancestors on my fathers side and when I was 12/13/14, i went through a phase where I really dug into that part of my heritage, into the music and myths and culture. I love Irish names, especially ones with -mh and -bh because they make a V sound, Niamh and Siobhan begin my favorites that do that. I also love Aisling (Aislinn/Ashleen)...And while not necissarily Irish, I'm also fond of the use of Kristy and Ashley for boys, I know quite a few Irish men with those names.
Considering you're not Irish you are actually really good at pronouncing the names. My names actually Aoife and I live in Ireland and I speak Irish fluently so I know what I am talking about
Alyson Hannigan has a daugher called Keeva. I had no idea it was an Irish name! So many nameson your llist I had no idea had Irish spellings. THe Irish language is fascinating.
My family is well over half Irish and I've always kind of wanted to name my kids with at least mostly Irish names, since my surname is Irish and I just plain love Irish names. I already picked out 4 options lol: Cian Sean, Niall Patrick, Cailin Saoirse Niamh, Caoimhe Ciara Quinn (I know Quinn isn't traditionally Irish, but I just thought it fit) :)
I haven't explored Irish names aside of the Fleming family (ancestors), but my two favorite Irish female names are Saoirse and Ireland (lol). It's been hard for me to truly get a grip on Irish male names.
I named my daughter Fallon ,many years ago .I loved the name and I was told that it meant "grandchild of the ruler" in Gaelic. Are you familiar with this? Love your channel 🍀🇮🇪♥️
This will help me choose and say names for my characters in Crusader Kings. I've been saying Conchobar wrong the whole time, pronouncing all the letters.
I also wanted to mention the names Saoirse (Seer-sha) and Sinead (Sha-nade). These are my top 2 absolute favorite Irish names for girls! :) And Irish itself, is a name too - unisex -- but I think I like the thought of that on a girl. Iri for a nickname :-)
I love Irish names. I'm Irish Cherokee Indian in German. My name Kasie means brave and it's irish pronounce Casey. I love the name Quinn Brennan and Rory for girls and Connor for a boy Riley is also Irish
I liked most of your choices but I've never heard of Meara! Did you perhaps mean Maire, pronounced Maura? Also, I'm not fond of using surnames as Christian names and itwould not often be done here in Ireland where most people are quite traditional about choosing names and saints names are still very popular as well as Irish names. You wouldn't meet many Irish people called Quinn nor Darcy as their Christian names; they'd be more likely their surnames?
I lived in Ireland for a year and I am pretty sure "double check" Fianna is not pronounced Feen it Fiaa does that make sense long A. Aoife is my favorite name of all time, I will certainly be using it. It's very popular in Ireland as well.
I've heard Fianna a few different ways, but I'm not from Ireland, nor is it a name used a lot where I live. It might be regional, but I tried mimicking Frank McCourt's pronunciation here; audio.babynamesofireland.com/audio/fianna.mp3 Aoife is very sweet! I definitely see why it's so popular :)
Aoife was the name of the Irish wife of "Strongbow"."Strongbow",ie,Richard De Clare,2nd Earl of Pembroke,Wales,was the Anglo-Norman conqueror of Ireland in 1169,friends.Aoife was the daughter of the King of Leinster,Ireland,hence she was a princess.They had 2,or 3 children,I believe.Since my last name is Clair,I sometimes wonder if I,m possibly descended from Richard De Clare,ie"Strongbow".Anyway,he married Aoife to cement his role as the ruler of Ireland.Also,it,Aoife is quite a very lovely Irish girl,s name,friends.Erin go bragh!-Ireland forever!;
If I have a boy, I'm planning to name him either Cillian or Killian. If I have a girl I will use Siobhan for either the first of middle name. Can anyone think of a good middle name that goes with my boy name or my girl name? Should Siobhan be a middle or first name?
Milo Cillian is one of my favorite combos. A few names I like... Cillian Hart, Cillain Reid, Cillan Jude. Siobhan could easily fit as a first or middle - Fiona Siobhan, Isla Siobhan or Siobhan Leonie, Siobhan Jewel, Siobhan Belle
Ruby Anne Bethany Liana Lana Kelly Erika Fianna Gianna Hana Hope Sasha Tessa Keegan Aoife Evelina Karla Bridget Carla Ciara Kira Alexa Keira Diana Tiana Annika Holly Molly Mary Darcy Dana Meara Elsie Tori Josie Quinn Mary Jamie Winnie
when i was researching Irish girls names i came across your video & i already loved the name Quinn! i was so happy to see it be your #1 name & then for Declan to be your #2 was super fun! :)
My favorite Irish name is Aoife. I'd really like to name my future daughter Aoife because I think that it's really beautiful. I also like the Irish name Saoirse. Mostly because of Saoirse Ronan who is one of my favorite actresses.
Hai again! My name is Cerys thank you for saying it's a lovely name and I am halve Irish I live there now my sisters name is Grainne (and we are halve Welsh that must explain my name) 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤗 Thank you
I have a daughter named Aoife, because she comes from a long line of really strong women. But for the next child, if a daughter, how do I top that!? I love the name: Cuchulainn for a boy.
+TulipByAnyName its OK there's lots of Irish names somepeople have never heard some of them but I'd probably know the really unusual one cause I'm Irish☺
It can be spelled either way. From what i remember Eoghan is the Irish, Owen is the Welsh and Eoin is the English. But they are all pronounced the same way
Caoimhe is not pronounced Keva its KWEEV-A ! LIKE Keeva but instead of eva in the middle weave-a! Or qeeva. English and American people pronounce it as Keva but the actually Irish version is Qeeva pronunciation. Its a Q sound but there is no Q in the Irish alphabet but a mh makes a V sound

my son's name is Fionn and we get Finn all the time ! Not the correct way to say it x
My name is Oisín, pronounced O-sheen,it means little Dear (as in the animal). There's a legend surrounding it too. What I like about Irish names is that they all have meanings.
great addition, love the meaning too
Oisín is a GREAT name, but please please please, it's not O-sheen, it's USH-een. There's no strong O sound at all in the name.
I love Finn, Rory, Aoife, Cillian, Aine and Ronan! Some other names I really like are Colleen, which means girl, and Saoirse, which means freedom.
actually girl in Irish is slept cailín
i have 2 of these names (Ciara Áine) and honestly i used to hate them so much because of how hard everyone found it. since im irish living in england, like you said i get sierra a lot. i loved all of these names. irish names are so beautiful

I hear ya! There are so many great Irish names! I wish my Grandpa was still alive to pronounce Irish names for me. Looking forward to your video!!
Also in most irish names when they end with an e it is pronounced as an a just a general rule of thumb for names like Caoimhe and Aoife and aine
I loved watching this video and love the idea of more people using traditional Irish names they are so beautiful! A lot of the names you mentioned actually have multiple pronunciations, especially depending on what part of the country you are from.
