    Hi Josh:
Just an idea for a future episode - maybe centered around enjoying ham radio for those with disabilities.
I’m an Amateur Extra license holder who is also legally blind and hearing impaired. Most people as the years pile up will find challenges with both seeing and hearing. Maybe something you could do in conjunction with HandiHams.
    Just a thought.

I have started watching all of your content, I am sure my wife is going to be so happy to see me buying "radios" :(
its interesting to see how stuff works EG QSO is not to un-similar to the way a modem handshake works
would not be surprised if that is how that process began.

Gotta say, this is an excellent video. I agree with the 7300. Now personally I chose the 991A because its strengths lined up with my needs but you can't go wrong with either one. The screen is smaller on the 991 but not by a lot. I think for beginners the menus will be the main issue. It takes some getting used to but in the end isn't that bad. Take advantage of the 5 programmable quick functions and the quick memory recall. There is a YT channel called West Texas Video Gates and he goes over the 991 thoroughly. Watch those and you will know your 991 much more quickly. There is a lot of capability in that little rig.

So speed up speed up------ then slow down slow down? Surely speak normally and concisely and use the phonetic alphabet. Heard one guy use just about every long American city name mixed with phonetic. Took four or five goes before the Middle Eastern station got his call sign. I’m in UK and I couldn’t get it the first couple of goes. He knew his call sign, nobody else did.. good enjoyable vid as usual, nice one.

    Hi!
What is your opinion on 10m an 6m bands?
I can afford a 10m/6m/2m/70cm transreceiver and an antenna for it, but i live in an apartment on the first floor, so i can put the antenna to the balcony only. Is it workable, or should i stick to 2m/70cm?

I have several of both of them SMA to BNC . not all Baofeng the same SMA M on radio. My UV-5X (G) GMRS is a SMA-F in radio. and my outher UV-5R GMRS that is a SMA-M . easy just more adapters to BNC . I find 3 versions of signal stuff signal stick. 2m/70cm, 70cm only, and 1.25 meters only. with BNC female connector. not Shore of DB gain difference on 70 cm from the UHF only compared to 2 band VHF/UHF one. maybe some future antenna testing for 70cm HT antenna's . mono band VS 2 or 3 band one. Nogoya has a tri band 144/220/440 Mhz one works in the UV-5RX3 tri band HT. love your HT antenna testing videos. 73's

It's interesting to see the difference in license priveleges between the UK and the US:
in the UK the basics of the conditions are as follows:
Foundation (M7 M3 and M5 calls) can access most of the HF bands in full and all VHF and most UHF but power limited to 10 Watts
Intermediate (2E0 and 2E1) can access same HF and VHF but more in microwave and UHF but power limited to 50 Watts
    Full (G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G7, G8, M1 and M0) full access to all ham bands and full Europe power of 400 Watts

Don't rule out 75 ohm coax. RG-11 cable can be frequently picked up free from the cable company. After all, what is the characteristic impedance of a half wave dipole? RG-11 is low loss, especially if you use a tuner at the radio end.

Question: Could you still communicate as well between a Baofeng UV-5R 5 watt with the included antenna and the 8 watt version with the Nagoya NA-771 as you would if both parties had the 8 watt better antenna models? I would think that the better model's ability to both transmit and receive would make up for the other unit's lower power/small antenna. Distance would be under 5 miles.
Also, is it okay to keep these units hooked up to charge long term? I basically want my sister who lives 4 miles away to keep her unit plugged in and turned on so that I can contact her in an emergency and she's home.
Last question: has anyone experience with the Tenway clone of the UV-5R 8 watt Baofeng model?

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  4 роки тому

Generally the antennas play more into receive capability than the power output in plus or minus a few watts.
No, you don’t want to leave the radio on and on the charger. It will degrade the battery quickly.
Most baofengs, including the clones are the same. There isn’t much difference between any of them.
