Not only is Northern Spain criminally underrated, it's also one of the best places to make content - lost villages, American-Spanish history, world class gastronomy, and Spain's most impressive landscapes. Anytime I go up there I can't help but make videos. You nailed it with this one, as always.

I've been living in Galicia for more than 20 years, moving here was the best decision that I made. I spent time in Peru and Bolivia in the 1970's and loved the Spanish colonial architecture which you never see in Spain, only in Galicia . . . Galicia manda carallo !

Galicia is great and well worth a visit. I'm Irish and feel very at home there, the climate suits me much more than the hotter parts of Spain. It reminds me of the west of Ireland. It has the same mystical vibe. And the people are very down to earth and friendly. Also love when I get served a local wine, often in a small bowl.

I only hope that Northern Spain doesn't become so popular that they ruin it for the locals as it happened with nearly all of the Mediterranean coastline (pollution, destruction of natural areas, increased cost of housing and living, etc.) We're still on time to protect these areas from gentrification and mass tourism.

    • @Davesyn23
      @Davesyn23 7 місяців тому +4

It's happening, unfortunately. Here in San Sebastian, which is a beuatiful city, the massification of tourists, and the fact that everything is almost exclusively for the tourists, made the city one of the most expensive to live in.
Locals are starting to make graffities against tourists, as they did in Venice, for example.
I mean, we are very pleased with tourism! But we don't like seeing out cities (and, eventualy, all the north), so gentrified that we're pushed to go live somewhere else because everything is made for tourists.

Galicia is still pure of that! look what happened to Portugal/ Cappadocia in turkey/ germany and so many other places! and look at them 10/15 years ago! it’s suffocating and locals are being pushed away and prices getting high!

Galicia and Asturias are amazing. As a Londoner with family in central and southenr Spain, when I used to go Galicia as a kid it just didn't seem "Spanish" enough with the rolling green hills.etc.But of course it's an amazing part of the world I now love. I have enjoyed the videos that you do about wines, sherry, vermut, etc. I was wondering, would it be interesting or possible to do a video about distinctive regional drinks like Pacharan or different liqueurs? I suspect that there are some rather lesser know ones and sometimes even traditions associated. I remember that my mother's family was sometimes drinking anisette over ice after dinner. OR, even better, how about specialty pastries? Bakeries all over Spain are full of local specialties, breads and desserts, particular to the region. Oviedo, for example, has a wonderful pastry called carbayon. Then there's that cool lizard like ring thing from Toledo that is made around Navidades.

Hi from Portugal. Just fyi, if you go down the coast to Minho, in Portugal, it has 99% the same vibe. There's no Rias, so seafood is more restricted to fish and octopus only, but the rest is same salad, sardines on charcoal, and much more pork. Go down to Porto. Porto gave name to Portugal, and Portuguese comes from Galician.

I have lived and worked in many parts of Spain including Madrid, Andalucia and the Comunidad Valenciana but the first time I got to the Atlantic coast, I was amased how different the people were. I can only assume that it's the lack of foreign tourism. So friendly and helpful. Can't wait to get back. Lucía is getting so big and it's great to see you all so happy together. Welcome back James and family! In terms of the north of Spain, Bilboa has been on my list of places to visit for a while. Will see if you have any videos on it.

    Hi Guys,
    I really enjoyed the video.
Last year I bought my car from a dealer in Vigo and so we drove across Spain, from the high desert of Almeria to do so.
It's a long way. 4 hours to Madrid, an hour and a half around Madrid and then another 5 hours or so to Vigo.
We enjoyed seeing the landscape change as we went. Dry mountains goving way to the central plain, and then more hills, but all green this time. And river valleys with water in them at the bottom!
It's a shame but after that long drive we were too tired to stay up late and go to dinner. So the lobster for my wife and crab for me never happened, but we did drink a nice local bottle of Albarino in the hotel. I liked Vigo.
Your video reminded me we need to go back and have a more leisurely tour. And get into the local seafood.
And yes, the car is still going well.
    Yours from the hot desert,
    J P Williams

I love Galicia! Thanks for another amazing video! Those empanadas look delicious too. But the empanadas in Madrid vary depending on which country they're from. I went out one night with an Argentine and Peruvian girl and we tried empanadas from their respective countries. It was amazing!

I've lived in A Mariña (Rias Altas ) for 16 years now ,love it,sure there are summer visitors but pretty much all Spanish and not that many.I have only met some 5/6 English people who live here, bliss,Fantastic uncrowded beaches ,it can rain ,but hey no rain ,no " Costa Verde " the food, seafood and meat is to my mind unsurpassed in the rest of Spain.it's paradise, but please don't tell everybody!

The "Portuguese" that you heard in Galicia was probably Gallegos. 70% of Galicians speak it, and to a "Spanish ear" it sounds kinda like Portuguese.

What a lovely video and thank you for taking us along on your adventures - such a lovely family. I am definitely in love with Galicia and it was the right place for me to settle down in Europe. It lacks the excitement of Madrid but it matches my temperament to live in SDC most of the year and rent a place in Madrid for a couple of months out of the year. Food is cheap, usually local, and rent is affordable.

the Morazzo peninsula is beautiful. We explored it alot while we lived in Pontevedra before moving to Cambados. Walking the ruta de la playas from Marin to Aldan in the fresher months is wonderful. Also a pity (the majority) of the furanchos are not open in Summer months, which are definitely worth a visit.

One thing you should always remember when you're in Spain is Beautiful People,Photographic Aura and Sophisticated Accent, Oooohhh I love Myself! But we're always Humble. We walked the Camino de Santiago along the Ruta de la Costa two years ago, from San Sebastian to Santander via Bilbao. We absolutely loved it, and intend to return and do the next stage from Santander to Gijón. We knew the Basque Country was going to be beautiful, but we were also pleasently surprised at just how stunning Cantabria was. Cantabria is not somewhere many people talk about, but it is an absolute gem. They are also some of the best beaches I have seen in Spain...when the weather is right!

You know, we cántabros never wanted excessive prominence..😅 go unnoticed is one of our characteristics, we learned that from the Guerras Cántabras against Rome. Hidden in our mountains, ready to ambush the legions. But you are one of the smart ones, and finally you've found us. Welcome to la tierruca, now this is your home too.
And yes, all the north of Spain is beautiful. But in the middle of the north, the old castillian port of Santander is the jewel. The beauty of Comillas, Bárcena Mayor, Laredo, los valles pasiegos, and off course Santander and the Magdalena Palace...I guess you know all that places, but anyway. They are some drops of paradise on earth.

    • @Azog150

@@aha3885 We have not seen any of the sites to the West of Santander - so I will make a note of those for next time.
But we did see Laredo/Santoña, Santander, Castro Urdiales, Loredo, Langre, and Playa de Galizano, amongst other places.
I also like history, so I was imagining the Romans and Cantabrians whilst walking through the mountains.
You are right to be proud of your home!

Hello from NZ :) We visited Vigo for 2 nights in 2017 on our way from San Sebastian - Leon - Vigo - Porto to break the drive up. Charming harbour town, once the biggest fishing port in the world until China took over. I remember having the best seafood meal (ever) for around EUR15 at Restaurante Rias Baixas. The sea was too rough to go to the Cies Islands so we caught the ferry across to Cangas and had some amazing gourmet tapas & excellent wine (also very reasonably priced) at a newly opened bar there. That area is a hidden treasure and full of interesting people especially the "pilgrims" and their donkeys in Leon.

I love all of Spain but the north will always have my heart. If I could figure out how to retire to Spain I would love to go to Asturias. Please, more videos of the north when you can. =)

I was just in Galicia for six weeks. It was even more interesting than I thought it would be. Their history is so very rich. I had been there before in very short spurts. But, now, I want to return. I visited the Celtic ruins of Baroña which is on the Atlantic. I was fascinated by its castros, acropolis, spirit and beauty of the place. I don't have the time to write about everything that Galicia has to offer. It has so much! Go visit it. You won't regret it. It is worth it!
