Thanks for the shout out guys! Glad to see some progress and help with the knowledge! 1.25" sch 10 fits much nicer to the port size btw. Long story short, in compound turbos the big turbo flows the total mass required for the power target and the little turbo shrinks the volume of said mass so it actually fits into the engine :).
Big turbo has to go on the outside as it has to be able to suck the most air, the small turbo will make the big boost by boosting already boosted air. If the small turbo was on the outside then you would choke the big turbo as all the air has to flow through it. If the small turbo flows boosted air it is not a restriction.
The large turbo has to feed the small so you can compress compressed air. If the small turbo feeds the big turbo, you would inevitably create a vaccume on the little turbo meaning you would be taking compressed air, and allowing it to expand before recompressing... I JUST bought a 99 tdi, and its lacking to say the least, so i came in here to see what i could find on compounding a little bitty diesel like i do on my 5.9 cummins.
Don’t think of it as, big turbo feeds the small turbo. Think low pressure turbo (large housing has more space inside ) feeds the high pressure turbo ( smaller space getting same amount of air forces inside)
Definitely sub'd. Just snagged my first alh tdi out of the junkyard with 170k on the clock. Plan on a similar compound setup, standalone vnt controller, and tweaking a 12 mm injection pump off an iveco to make it all play nicely in the sandbox.
Hey, just look at the multistage compressor of a jet engine - The larger stages compress the air first and in the smaller stages the already compressed air gets compressed even more.
Do you plan on keeping the 11mm pump? What rpm do you plan to bring it to? What size nozzles? I’m wondering if you will need more fuel. Stock 5.9 uses 12mm pump for just that hx35
Very sick making the compound system, but why not buy an jw1856 for £500-700 and you could get more than 250bhp with all the other mods you have? Less work and respond really well, full boost on a later pd but still a 1.9 comes in at 2.4k or so. I have a 1.9 pd130 avf that I plan to put one of these turbos on and it will make easy 270 with new cam and injectors
With the HX35 they could make more than 250... I guess they don't want to overload the transmission... There's a yt video of a guy making 4 bar boost with a compound turbo with the bigger turbo being a hx35... He's probably at 350-400 HP probably 800 Nm of torque
Good to see someone else doing this kind of thing. I'm working on planning out a compound setup for my MK3 TDI right now, that's an AHU engine but very similar mechanically. Same architecture and displacement with a handful of changes. My plan is to go smaller than this, I want fast response lol. VNT17 as the small turbo and a custom machined T3 with a billet wheel as the big turbo. Should be fun. I'm probably going to blow up my transmission lol.
@@darchvader2171 sounds fun, I actually swapped an ALH into my MK3 a few weeks ago with a K14 turbo from an AAZ, have a few tweaks to make before I put a tune in it but its decent so far. Still planning to go to a compound turbo setup eventually but i'll probably do it on an ALH instead of an AHU
Matt Whitbread of Whitbread Performance sell them. I have his TDI oil adapter like that, and his Jeep adapter plate for my ALH TDI swap in my CJ7. Great work and a great dude!
The worst packaging I’ve ever seen! The small turbo can sit as low as the oil can drain in the sump and the big turbo can be placed where is the small right now!
We need an update
I guess looks good
"can't let anything free go to waste."
this touched my soul.

Yeah I had Gabe order 1.5” before I had a look at how small the ports actually were in real life. Appreciate all your help in his build.
Could you put a link
Do you have a UA-cam
Hey Matt, anyone sell manifolds to do this?
@@baysidefabrication you just saved my day thanks boys. From uk
im with will! we need an update on this.
That manifold is WICKED!
I currently have a 03 golf TDI, AXR tuned ECU now at 150 hp 353 nm of torque

Alh is (98 beetle also) 99.5 Jetta, golf, to 03. It was then replaced by the bew.
That manifold looks sweet

Great job Ben and your brother y'all rock! I'm here for the algorithm! Peace
Dig that TiLite Areo T! 🤘🏻

Do your brother have an youtube channel? I want to follow this build!!!

11:10 😱beautiful
Really hope to see more of this
That looks pretty spicy! 😎
Any new content coming on this build? Im dying to know what the torque numbers come out to.
yeah this sounds like an interesting build
Any further videos on this build? I have an 01 jetta TDI im going to eventually tear down and completely redo, this is amazing
Hell yeah that looks so sick! Great work by both of you! Cheers from Down Under!
This manifold for this TDI is perfect and big 😂👌🏻
What is the small turbo

big difference from a 12mil p7100 to this 12mil pump
@@PAOff-roadAdventures yup. Im not talking about a p pump
Are you guys going to water cool, the turbos
Sick dude. You think you guys can make a playlist for this? I'd love to follow it
Check out 'driving 4 answers' video on compound turbo setups. They breakdown how/why the big turbo can feed the small turbo w/o blowing it up.
Great content thanks for sharing
Any progress on this?
this project is awesome!!
i’d like to see more
did this build ever get done?
Please update us on this
The big turbo pushes more boost in the small turbo what drives it in faster and for longer

Too much lag...

was this thing ever finished??
how is the project goin boys?
Did you do it?
Any update on this?
Updates? Or Tdi stuff for sale ?
It' possible make it the same work the 1.6 tdi ?
I wanna order one of these! should make a pattent

I'm running malone stage 3 .216 nozzles and a FMIC getting ahu58 turbo and bosio pp764 nozzles

More options
Any luck with your ahu compound setup?
the small turbo is 2260 bmw?
any update how his build turned out cause the manifold looks insane.
He’s still working on it. Been on the back burner for a while.
@@baysidefabrication ok thx for that i hope he gets it done so we can see that beast running :D
@baysidefabrication so is this not the one for sale on darkside? I thought this was you guy's I'm bout to buy 😂😂
Did he give up on this?
e ficam os dois turbos a trabalhar a cerca de 40% da capacidade de cada um. é um demónio. vê Ibiza bimotor hpturbo.
Does the brother have a channel?
Do u have links to the turbos and the tubing for the headers you made?
Where is the update?
Is it running?
How much did this build cost?
Update?
What kind of oil adapter is that?? Never seen one!

How did this build turn out? Got dyno numbers running these three turbos?
Much appreciated.
Curious why you're not using a vnt turbo as the hp turbo?
Exactly.
And then?
what size was the small turbo
Gt 2052 internal gate
Where in ct?
Ashford
so fucking sick
I want to build a 4 cylinder tdi and swap it into a rabbit
WOW

Welcome to the future! Awesome project, only way to get 450hp with less lag than a 300hp single.
