For a young country few resources (almost nothing other than its people) and only saw its horizon bloomed in the late 70s, many countries had heaped praises for Singapore for where it is today. Similarly for its Universities from lowly ranked in the 70s to Top 10 in Asia and Top 20 globally (depending on which Ranking association), it has come a long way. As for R&D, scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs etc, that comes along when the country progresses. As I have mentioned above, read more, research more. Look at the R&Ds over the last 5-10 years done by the Universities, A-Star etc. Look at the initiatives in bringing in foreign technologies / enterprises into Singapore ranging from biotech, to aviation, to IT. The achievements of America, Germany, Japan, China, S. Korea, Taiwan, UK etc were made overnight. Its through a stage of growth and how well they are prepared to accept changes and challenges As for jobless graduates, I have not come across a country that has no unemployed graduates. I agree that Singapore could do more to make its graduates more employable through constant upgrading of its Universities curriculum through industry feedbacks and market requirements. Also to enhance new skill sets to needed to stay relevant. Even sectors like accounting & booking keeping is going though some 'revolution' from IT. Some simple Contracts/Agreements and Book Keeping can now be done on-line without the need of an actual lawyer or accounting people. So in time to come when these graduates got replaced by automation, their educations are mediocre? Grow up, will you?
Do you know that indians are every where & most of them have become citizens of that foreign countries whether they went there for studies or for work. So when he said he's from UK he is UK citizen.
