Electric Vehicle Owners' Winter Frustration Spurs Call for Gas Car Return
It's no secret that freezing weather and electric vehicles don't get along too well.
While this chilly relationship isn't breaking news, a recent uproar began after a FOX 32 Chicago report highlighted the struggles of various Tesla drivers trying to charge their EVs at a Tesla Supercharger in Oak Brook, Illinois.
As temperatures in this Chicago suburb dropped below zero for the first time in a while, the situation became quite dire.
Owners found themselves in a tough spot, having to tow their Teslas on flatbeds because the chargers weren't working, and their electric vehicles had run out of juice.
The TV station didn't hold back, bluntly stating, "Public charging stations have turned into car graveyards," and referring to depleted EVs as "dead robots." This report triggered a wave of similar stories, with Tesla owners echoing their discontentment with the vehicles. So, what's the problem with EVs?

Electric cars have failed a hundred years ago on the free market and they are failing again. I don't see petrol/diesel cars as the future but they are definitely the better choice than what is currently sold as "green technology". The solution are not government mandates but new innovative technologies from the free market.

Actually, we don’t have batteries. Newer style of batteries weren’t as popular for grid tied systems at the time. The grid is, essentially, or storage, so the electric meter keeps track of how much goes in vs out. We export a lot, likely feeding the neighbors, but we get credits we’ll use when cloudy or at night. The array is sized so that in the winter, we’ll make about half of what we use, but we have enough credits saved up to carry us through the winter without a bill, basically $13 for the connection. However, ours is fixed, can’t tilt or anything, so after a snow, it’s 1 more chore to go out and clean it off! 😬👀😁. Batteries would help out, even with grid tied systems, especially if there’s a zombie apocalypse, no? 🤪

    In Winter:
Gas Cars: Heat is a natural byproduct of combustion, and is harnessed and used not only to keep the engine warm, but also the cabin.
Electric Cars: Fuel (electricity) is spent to keep the car's systems warm even while you're not driving it. The longer it's parked, the more electricity you're using. You have to either plug it in, or you lose lots of range.
My Gas Car doesn't use any energy at all while it sits unused, other than a tiny amount that is lost in the acid-based battery that allows the car to start initially. I can let it parked in freezing cold temperatures for more than a week and it will fire up, no problem at all. I had an '03 Lincoln Town Car as a backup vehicle and when I needed to drive it last week, it had been sitting in a 20-40F Garage for almost 4 months. Went out there, turned the key and she fired up right away. No problems at all, other than a slightly low tire that needed some air.
In the summer, one might say "you gotta cool that gas engine!" ... well, you gotta cool an EV battery too. Excess heat doesn't do good for either system. And again, while the car sits unused, almost zero energy is spent. I can leave my car sitting for a week, and it has the exact same amount of fuel as it had when I last parked it. Gasoline will degrade slowly, but it takes upwards of a _year_ for that to happen and even then, other than a mild performance loss, you can run year-old gasoline, you just don't want to leave it sitting in a carburetor (only older engines have these, newer ones use fuel injectors) because it'll gum up the delicate moving parts if you let old gas sitting in there through temperature changes over a long period of time.
Meanwhile, you can't leave an EV sitting for a week without plugging it in every so often, so if you're ever faced with a situation where you gotta drive to an area where there's not many chargers around, you gotta plug it into a standard outlet which takes absolutely forever from what I've heard, and even then.... do you think that electricity is free? Of course not! It has to come from somewhere and it'll show up on your electricity bill at the end of the month.
So, if you plug your car in while your car sits in subzero temperatures, it's draining electricity from your house _constantly_ while the gas car doesn't. And if you gotta work in those freezing temperatures, I hope you live close because if you drive to your workplace and park the car in the parking lot, chances are there's no charger there. 9 hours later in -10F, you're gonna be faced with a good range hit. You used range to drive there, you're gonna be losing range for your car to keep the battery warm, and hopefully you got enough left you can get to a charger.
It's just too much hassle. And to add to that, a lot of electricity comes from coal power plants anyway. What's the difference between burning coal in a huge power plant to generate electricity for you to put in your car, and burning gasoline to produce the energy to move your car? Any car post 2010 has quite a number of innovations to improve efficiency and reduce harmful exhaust.

EV are far from being perfect, but you just need to plan better on a super cold day.
For me, the worst problem is not the cold temperature. It's the aerodynamic. When I put a ski rack on top, the car is not able to estimate the range drop properly.

EV's are better than ICE vehicles in some ways - quieter, smoother running, better torque at low speeds etc. But they have other major problems which make them a liability. Poor range, leading to range anxiety and frequent, compulsory 'coffee stops' whether you want a coffee or not. Then there's this temperature problem, which is far worse than anything we see with ICE cars. The battery technology is just not up to the job, and the cars have been rushed onto a generally unwilling public. And it's being done in such a manner that it feels like being under attack.

“The Problem with EVs”, this a misnomer it should be the PROBLEMS with EVS.
Just for starters, they are too expensive, too heavy, inefficient, the claimed range in all of them is wildly optimistic and largely unachievable.
If the battery pack under the floor is scraped it is potentially dangerous and will, need expensive expert intervention or replacing at huge cost.
When EVs are involved in an accident they are increasingly being written off as replacing the battery pack can be more expensive than is economically viable.
Lithium-ion cells can easily fail, causing fire which rapidly becomes thermal runaway which cannot be extinguished, a chemical, gas cloud rapidly forms which is explosive and highly toxic.
The highly chemicals that are mined for battery manufacture are largely from the Third World using cheap Labour with little care for workers’ health and cause more damage to the environment. To claim enough raw material to manufacture 1 kilogram of a Lithium-ion cell reaches many tons of material.
    That’s all just for starters!

Yes, there are problems with this new electric vehicle technology, but let's think back to the horse to car transition. So many problems appeared - proper roads, reliability, fueling stations, service stations, noise, etc. It has taken 100 years to get ICE vehicles to today's performance level. A decade or two from now, I suspect we'll all wonder why we didn't go electric sooner. Our technology is just playing catchup. It all hinges on faster charging, more efficient batteries. Researchers will prevail.

Even natural gas and propane are super clean compared to EVs and their non-renewable rare earth minerals. Battery technology is inappropriate for transportation especially the ordinary, multi-use automobile. In short, the reasons EVs lost out to ICEs over 100 years ago remain the same today!

The list of deficiencies misses one point that makes EV operation a treacherous game which is the price of running the battery completely dead. A gasoline vehicle with a dry gas tank can almost always be put back in motion by carrying a two gallon plastic can to the vehicle and pouring it into the tank. A diesel fuel system is more complicated due to extremely high pressure pumps and their inherent need for priming, but usually it boils down to adding fuel. Electricity cannot be carried in cans. An EV that has insufficient charge must be moved to the charging station,, period no exceptions. People short sighted enough to vote these environmental idiots into power so they can vilify the fossil fuel network on which our society depends are inherently unable to grasp such concepts. Mohammed goes to the mountain a lot easier than the mountain to Mohammed.
