Thank you so much for this idea. Just did this in my rx8. I am using a kindle fire at the moment, but it doesn’t have enough processing power and constantly skips. I’m now looking for a new tablet so that it works better. I love that I didn’t have to put in an ugly aftermarket head unit, but I still get all the functionality of apple car play. 😊
Ok, i finally made it and it works perfect. Thanks a lot for your great videos and your code. Due to the fact that many ppl had an issue with the wiring, i made a wiring diagram! My mod is a bit different. I used a 7" Garmin Navigation System instead of a tablet, but the basic wiring is the same. So if you or anybody want to have this diagram, let me know,...
Great work my friend! this is so useful I am grinning with confidence. You are superb at these videos. I almost wish you did the keyless keypad push start DIY, because MAN you would have nailed it perfectly. Any other DIYs you have? you've already inspired me!
I'm kind of desperate... I'm trying to do this mod to my Mazda 3 BK, got an arduino + motorshield but i can't figure out how to wire everything together. Isn't anybody able to create a wiring diagrmm of this? I read the code with all it's documentation, read all the entries of the forums, but i don't get it. I would be so thankful if anybody who completed this mod would make a wiring diagram to help me ...
Hi there, I've been searching the web for a step by step way to connect my arduino to replace the factory pcb in the nav hood, but all I find are links for code sites and finished products, is there anyway you can post a video of how you actually connected your Arduino to your factory nav motor.. what other componets are required other than the Aurduino.. ie resisters etc.... thanks
Your PCB didn't break mate... So your Adrioono thing was a waste of time. You just needed to fiddle with the cogs on the motor as they need to be lined up. For those who get the problem if the sat nav hood can only open but not close, check this. There's dots on the cogs that line up.
I tried a lot of stuff, there was no response from the PCB neither opening or closing. Either way using the Arduino I was able to control how long the tablet would charge for when the car was off and make custom tilt levels.
Great vid! I'm doing slightly different project - instead of tablet I want to put one oil gauge from Innovate. I'll remove nav screen and put a carbon board in that place, then I'll drill a hole and put a gauge.
Were there any steering wheel controls, or controls on the head unit, for the old navigation unit, and were you able to make those function with your new tablet?
+ptick16 The only steering wheel control I have is the volume controls. Having said that there were never any steering wheel controls for the stock navigation. Instead there was a small control panel which sits hear the gear shifter, I never installed or used those. What I do have are some audio controls that came with my bluetooth audio adapter. I've mounted those near my knee under the steering column, I used magnets =)
Danggg order the oem gps for my mazdaspeed gonna replace the screen with a tablet but they just cut the cords to connect and motorize the screen to pop up
Instead of putting a tablet under there, I am planning to replace the factory screen with an 7" Pi screen kit with hdmi and connect to my android headunit. Is it easy enough to replace the screen?
The steps I do in the video are still applicable to just replacing the screen, the hard part is likely mounting the replacement properly but the Pi screen should be much more compact than a tablet so you should have an easier time. Without actually trying it I can't say for sure if it'll be easy or not, just assume it will be hard =)
Great job! Did you have any issues with the tablet overheating in the summer. My Nexus 7 had some battery swelling over time, just wondering if you had any setup for cooling?
Yes the tablet would overheat when I was using it for navigation, in direct sunlight and in summer. I think adding a small fan would definitely make it more stable.
@@wonked Thanks. Yeah it's been about 5 years since the install. It's mostly garage parked and when its extremely hot out I don't run the tablet. But the wireless charger was acting up and it turned out to be the swollen battery disrupting the contact. Thanks for the tip, I'll try and run a fan. I was looking at some sort of heat shielding lining the inside the unit. Worst case if it doesn't improve, a window shade and parking by a tree should do the job lol.
I know this is a super old video. But i found your code while trying to install a tablet in my Mazdaspeed3. All my stock boards work in my Navi screen and hood, but I like how yours opens and closes with the ACC power, and an audrino is a lot smaller then the OEM boards in the Navi hood. Anyways I was wondering if you had a wiring diagram so that I can get mine working, I have two wires on my motor, and three wires off the stock potentiometer which from looking at your youtube videos you have also. I am just curious how you wired it up, in reading your code, I saw motorenable pin number and a motordir pin number (but that is less wires then I have unless there is two grounds in the potentiometer). But I know the potentiometer has to be wired in. If you could give a brief wiring diagram or draw a simple picture that would save me a lot of time and hassle, as I have the same motor hat as you do. Thanks
+flodu30620 It is possible and I have done it. I used Bluetooth, there wasn't enough space to attach the 3.5mm headphone jack (aux). To use either Bluetooth or Aux you'll need to buy a separate attachment that plugs into the back of the radio. I installed that years ago and I've forgotten the exact brand I used.
+flodu30620 Installing the Bluetooth/Aux audio kit isn't hard. Once you have the radio out you can just plug it in to the back of the radio. The cable goes straight into a port at the back.
hi, could you please post the code and wiring used on this project? It would be much appreciated, cause many of us have to do this, and for a newbie it is kind difficult...
I've you're still interested, the code is now available here: github.com/dasonwong/rx8navhood I completely rewrote it from scratch so that its neater and more understandable, good luck.
Excellent guide and I will be doing this to mine shortly. Is there a guide anywhere on the items I need to buy to put this all together please? I looked on the RX8 Owners club but the images are now missing ( Thanks photobucket for becoming money grabbers !!! ) Thanks in Advance.
It's been many years since the project. The images were mainly of the finished product. The majority of the details are in this video. I don't really have a list, but basically an Arduino Uno, a Nexus 7 Gen 2 a Arduino motor shield, some resistors and a few USB car chargers. Really sorry I can't provide more details, I wish I documented it better.
I don't really have any recommendations, I would suggest you find the latest tablet and make sure its got dimensions that are smaller than the 2nd gen Nexus 7, that way you know it'll fit. Good luck!
+Edgar Lucero I remember what I used now. It was called xcarlink and it had a bluetooth option. However, that failed and what I ended up doing was buying a bluetooth to 3.5mm adapter. It gets power from the cigarette lighter and plugs into the aux-in. The tablet connects to this adapter via bluetooth and the adapter sends the audio to the 3.5mm aux-in. It was called: Himbox HB01 Bluetooth 4.0 Hands-Free Car Kit Wireless USB Magnetic Base
Really sorry, it's been so many years now I never documented the build very well. However, if you check out the Arduino code it'll tell you which pin is used for what. Hope that helps.
+Mo pro The navhood comes with a motor and attached to the motor is a potentiometer, basically the resistance changes depending on the angle of the screen. You can read this value to determine if the hood is open or closed. (I'm assuming you mean navhood/display when you say door).
+Heisenberg It is possible and I've heard it being done before. However, it is extremely difficult and probably not worth it since the software and maps are not long updated.
+Heisenberg I suppose anything is possible. But the easiest solution would be just to sell the existing RX-8 and buy one with everything you want already.
+kaitlyn Gissell sandoval I got the Arduino at my local Jaycar (electronics shop). But you can find them online easily. The install is not easy, also you'll need to program and wire the Arduino as well.
Sure you can do it yourself. You need to learn to code though. I suggest look at some Arduino tutorials. If your nav hood is working you don't need an Arduino. I only used one because my hood wasn't working.
Installing is probably the easy part, making it was the hardest. The video basically shows the majority of the installing. I had to splice the power to the tablet and hood by soldering some wires to the cables from the headunit which isn't shown.
This has to be one of the best DIY videos I have watched. Thanks for going so in depth. It has made my attempt at a similar install a lot easier.
Thanks. I dont even own a RX8 But this is really the best DIY video if have every watched on youtube. On anything. Perfect!

do u recken the original verson of this is compatible with every rx8
I was wondering if u could upload a video of the nexus with brightness settings all the way down.
Can this be done with a kuro edition? Mine doesnt have the nav but im wondering if can buy one and install it?
Quick question, does everything still work after the installation, for example, AC, radio, etc.?

Aaaand before you can remove that bolt, you must first replace the apex seals
Could you take a close up picture of the wiring to the arduino? Also which arduino did you used?
Man, if i have original navigation in my rx8 what i need to do that my tablet(when i upgrade) go ON/OFF when i open/close navhood?
Looks nice! How can u use the ACC 12V as a digital input for the Arduino?
excellent vid will definitely give this a go on my rx8.

Music, audio as you have done over jack aux input or via OBD can be done via OBD II or that in your Bluetooth radio input jack?
+5KingfivE5 All audio and OBD is done through Bluetooth. There wasn't enough space to insert a 3.5mm aux jack.
Did you by any chance still have the set up of the breadboard and arduino?
I have a question , we can control the tablet with the original gps button ??
I never had the original GPS button so my current setup doesn't allow for that.
