When I was sixteen years old...1970 I did an ice carving at my school of the Great Pyramid and the Sphynx. I got a failing mark because my history teacher, who was one of the judges, told me the Sphynx was not a lion but the head of the Pharaoh Khufu. I argued with him that it was actually a lion. I have no idea how I knew this back in 1970?
Haji al Kidya there’s an old riddle about the Sphinx in which the Sphinx is portrayed as a lion. So we still have verbal traditions portraying this. It’s possible u just read a story about the riddle.
Love Graham Hancock! This theory has always resonated and made the most sense to me. Civilizations have come and gone throughout time....wonder how long the current has, until people like us, one day, are discussing what could this statue head , buried in the sand/ocean, with a crown and torch have been? We are truly a species with amnesia.
I agree, it was a lion's head proportional to the paws. However, I believe you need to expand the erosion examination to the entire plateau, which has been shown to be artificially created. Looking at the surrounding area near and at the edges of the plateau should be more revealing. No one has done that, yet.
Before you look at the erosion, check out the level where the lion body is situated. Archaeologists have removed a lot of dirt/sand surrounding the lion body. The sphinx pharaoh head on the other hand is on the ground level just like the surrounding pyramids. In other word, during that ancient Egyptian period, the Egyptians could possibly see only the head of the sphinx and recarve it into a pharaoh's head. Also, check out the back of the body of the sphinx. It is very flat. Meaning that only the very top of the sphinx's back was exposed to erosion as most of the body was buried in the dirt.
I think you are correct about the Sphinx being a lion, but I think was a male lion like traditional Sphinx. I also believe it was from the age of Leo from 35,000 years ago not the last age of Leo 10,000 years ago. This fits the legends and the geological history. Organic material found between the stones of the Great pyramid is from the flood. Love your channel! ❤️ keep it up!!
Carrying on from there, after erosion and changing times, the head could have easily been reshaped to a jackal and then on to the pharaoh. Or even several pharaohs.
Agree 100% but I believe the time frame of that civilization closer to 20-25,000 yrs ago. Pre-flood. The rise of what we not know as the western civilization began from the surviving refugees around 10,000 yrs ago that later became the Egyptian civilization (7,500bc) under the constellation of Virgo. Who found the ruins of the Giza and claimed them as their own by carving their glyphs onto them

But, after researching and studying this matter for over two decades, I am convinced that the Sphinx dates back to 9,000 - 11,000 BC. @@AncientArchitectsWhatever the age, one thing is certain, if it was carved by humans then they had behind them a long history of carving stone, accompanied by all of the technical expertise that goes with carving on a gigantic scale. The problem is that we don't see any such earlier history in stone. It is like it appeared out of nowhere with no precedence whatsoever. Perhaps their ability to cut and assemble megalithic size blocks gave them enough practice that all they needed was a little 3-dimensional visualization and gridding skill to figure out how to do on a huge scale what could and would have previously been done on a much smaller scale.
Great video. I too, have gone back and forth between lion or Anubis. Temple did a good job in his argument I felt. But, I now believe the Sphinx was originally a lion and my hypothesis is that it was a depiction Sekhmet, who predates Bast, and may also have been symbolized in the Leo constellation. Sekhmet is equated with destruction, the Age of Leo was when the Younger Dryas happened. Can't wait for your further discussion on this. Love your ideas - thanks so much.

Ancient Architects I would personally agree that Leo looking at Leo, at 10K years BCE, sounds very nice, pretty and neat, in the 13 House Zodiac way of looking at the issue. But who really knows for certain. Shrug. There are 13 X 28 day Moon cycles in a Solar Year. 13 X 28 = 364 + 1 = 365 or “A Year and a Day". Add another 1 day each 4 leap years and the 365.25 solar year matches the 13 Moon Cycles per year. So see the legend of Osiris the Moon God being cut up into 14 pieces over 14 nights by Set and then reassembled by Isis over 14 nights, so the Full Moon to New Moon to Full Moon cycle, also related to female menstruation (Menses - Moon) and fertility. The 13th Zodiac Sign = Ophiuchus (the Serpent Bearer) and the Constellations of the 13 Houses of the Zodiac are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Ophiuchus, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. So the 26K "Great Year" Precession of the Equinoxes goes backwards through this list whereas the 13 Moons Per Year goes forwards though it. Saltamontero I see what was asked as a similar Question I had. How are we Projecting Constellation Images from the Ancient Ones? We now see Lion in Leo, but did they really see Leo as a Lion that far back? And for any of the other Stars and Constellations? How do we know what they saw in their formations from the Ancient Ones? I do believe it was a Lion. But what else did a Lion mean than a Star Constellation? Yeah the tail isn't bushy like a jackals, it's more like a lion's tail. It's hard to know what the head once looked like. How much material was there to work with, how much could have been added on at the time. A lion needs a large mane, a jackal needs tall ears. Perhaps the Sphinx head is so small to give it the effect of being taller than it is. For instance the Statue of Liberty uses forced perspective. But Egyptians didn't use that technique from what I hear. Actually at times they even used a-symmetry to make statues look more realistic. I think it's safe to say though that is definitely not the original head. The headdress sits too low and flat, it's an alteration. If it were the tall head of a jackal with all that material on top to work with then I wouldn't expect to see that. I also seriously doubt the jackal's neck is wide enough to fit that headdress. But the tail says it all, canine tails never look like that.
Though I will watch the 3100 BC hypothesis video with an open mind, I think the Sphinx was built sometime around 11,000 years ago. Then again, I also consider Zep Tepi being an element of actual history, so I'm definitely stricken by the allure of a super civilization (no Aliens, all Humans).
William Kildea They could have potentially interacted with Aliens or something astronomical to explain the "gods" phenomenon, maybe benefiting a civilization's material conception. What I mean is that ultimately it was dictated by humans and their interpretation of events.
If the jackal was "central" to Egyptian lore, the jackal theory would have issues with the timeline of the eroded Sphinx. It would appear that the Sphinx predated Egypt by millennia, so they are not historically concurrent.

Artists, before they carve large pieces of work will first carve a miniature to fine tune details. Those two small stone lions from Kufu’s time look like miniature examples of what the sphinx might have originally resembled. Isn’t there a theory of there being two statues on the plateau? And as they (lions) are also seen in pairs, it would make sense.
Endlessly fascinating subject. I’m no authority on Ancient Egypt, but I admire the grandeur of the monuments, civilisation. I have this curious intuition that many of her secrets lay underneath the Great Pyramid. I just wish that the authorities would, once and for all, allow researchers/archeologists full access to map, as unobtrusively as possible, those areas of interests currently restricted. Including (if permissible) careful excavation of unexplored regions. I can’t help thinking that something extraordinary awaits to be discovered the likes of which the world has never seen. This is well presented. I think it's a lion too. I was thinking though...you say you believe that the Sphinx is over 12,000 years old (as do I), but you're comparing it to Old Kindom art that's at most 4600 years old, and using it as evidence that it couldn't be a jackal. I have a theory that the Sphinx was a lion, and when the old kingdom sprang up they found the giant lion statue and it influenced their early art; they probably worshipped the thing because in their eyes the gods put it there. So I'm thinking those old kingdom recumbent lion statues with the curved tail may have been copies of the giant statue, it would have to be that way if the Sphinx really predates the old kingdom by 7500+ years. Edit: sorry I commented before the part of the video where you address the time discrepancy. Shoulda waited till the end : )

Sitchin's take on this is as follows (from ancient texts). Thoth (Ningashida) the designer of the plateau had his face carved on the Sphinx. When Ra (Marduk) returned to Egypt and found this, he had his son's (Nabu) face carved over it. There may have been other changes later. Nice video.

Most people who study Egyptology normally stick with the same theory throughout their life . But the uploader is open minded and obviously is taking a very studius approach to this . He is happy to accept new ideas and move forward , whilst Most others go round and around in a circle .
The Sphinx is the body of a Lion for Leo, and the head of The Water Bearer, for Aquarius. It's all about lining up Orion, The Sphinx, the Pyramids, the shafts, and the ages... There is a video called "The Giza Clock" that I am referencing (but have done a ton of work myself to agree with these views). Aquarius began in 2012 when Leo ended. This dates the Great Pyramid Complex to 2039 BC. Having said that, I believe that the site itself was chosen as a sacred place much earlier by the Khemetians. There would have been a temple/ shrine of some kind based on the grounding and electro-magnetic traits of the site. So ya, I have gone back and forth too as I Temple's work is compelling. My guess is that he is a 33rd Degree Freemason and charged with a disinfo. campaign, seriously!!! Also, look into the positioning of the Obelisk at Heliopolis. Like all mysteries it is great fun!!! Who knows, perhaps the earth did get bumped off its axis??? All I know is that the Precession of The Equinoxes is like a clock running backwards and given the 'math' encoded in The Great Pyramid that these were precise people. When in Egypt recently for a level 2 QHHT course during one of the demonstrations where one of our instructors was put under trance to demonstrate how to properly do proper line of questioning in past life regression a story was revealed of a young man who went on a journey of exploration with two others and stumbled upon what had to have been the Sphinx, but it was described as having the head of a lion. The rest of the story is amazing and to most would seem unbelievable, but to those of us who have experienced the power of QHHT we know that it has over the 50+ years of its practice revealed a multitude of hidden knowledge that was later found to be substantiated by additional historical and archeological evidence.

I wonder more often, lately, if the Sphinx is specifically related to Sirius, Star of the East, in the constellation Canis Major. And it stands guard steadfast over the ancient knowledge that was encoded in the Giza Pyramid structures, looking out for its Master who is so far away now, but is destined to return one day. I've always been an Anubis fan but you've pointed out some valid points I agree with. Dern! here's another belief of mine that has to be rearranged, the Spinx is a Lion after all. I'll be watching Hancocks, "The Lions Gate", again tomorrow. Great video.
Did Shock account for the fact that the body was buried for ages and that a high water table (in addition to rain weathering) might have caused some of the erosion on the lower part of the Sphynx?
Not Anubis, no. Anubis was never associated with the rising sun and would have no reason to be gazing at the eastern horizon. The Sphinx also has a lion tail, not a bushy Anubis tail, and does not have thin forelegs. No, it was always a lion's body, but possibly had a different head at first, a ram head like the avenue of ram head sphinxes at Karnak. If you look at images of those sphinxes you'll see that from the horns back it's exactly like the Giza Sphinx. If you just carved the ram face part back to a human face it would be just like the Sphinx. So Robert Temple actually missed the most obvious candidate for the original Sphinx design and went with one that is really far fetched. How many types of sphinxes were there? Ram head sphinxes and human head sphinxes, the end. Never was a sphinx consisting of a jackal body and a human head, because why would a king want to be associated with death or a jackal? Show me a jackal body with a human head please. The other way around maybe, but not jackal body human head. And you can't change a jackal body to a lion body anyway, since the jackal is much thinner. Could change a lion body to a jackal body but not vice versa. How the theory manged to hold on this long is a mystery to me. Pretty dubious, all things considered. A real uphill battle flogging that theory. A ram head to king head conversion is very supportable in comparison, like there's the ram head sphinxes at Karnak for all to see.
Thanks. Weird how nobody made that connection before. I did a search just now for "great sphinx originally ram headed sphinx" and got nothing. One page said it may have started as a lion head but I don't know of any theories about a ram head to human head conversion. There's a book for you, dude, or article at least. I won't be writing any myself, just not my thing.
@@RolanRoyce Whatever the original head was, it would have been much larger than the current head. Whether it was a lion, a dog, or a ram, the current head is a tiny blip on the statue, and would have been carved out of the original neck. So the shape of the current Sphinx head has no bearing on what it used to be.
@@FoolishPrince Right you are, I just googled it, I wasn't aware of that before. A major difference is that the Set headed sphinxes had human arms and hands. Of course with that skinny nose you could never convert it to a Pharaoh's head though. I also missed the falcon headed sphinxes when I wrote my comment. A Pharaoh head could indeed be made that that, in fact after doing an overlay image I know think that's what it originally was. The falcon head extends back quite far, just like the Sphinx headdress, thus explaining perfectly why it's so thick like that.

I agree it was carved from a lion... but ten thousand years ago, what makes us think people looked up at those seven stars and said "that's a lion". Did they also look up at the big dipper and say "that's a bear" ? That is the failed logic with this. I love G Hancock but that's a BIG leap assuming 10,000 years ago that line of stars was a lion to those people.
I agree with the hypothesis of the statue being a lion; it sounds and looks logical. I also like to add that after watching various videos I do believe that the great pyramid was a factory of energy but I do not know of what type. The walls material as well as the size of the building are both ideal for keeping heat and vibrations inside. Evident are marks of heat on the walls and the two airways could be working as release valves? Moreover, the parallel stones above the "kings" chamber remind me of vibration absorbing springs. Have there been tests for radiation? Moreover, the corridors seem small enough to fit only workers for maintenance purposes. And potentially the heavy door at the beginning of the grand gallery was there for security purposes, sealing potential excess pressure or something. Maybe the grand gallery itself would be a pleasure release chamber as well.
that would be a bit of a stretch, pyramids always had looting problems (sometimes as soon as they finished construction) so many security features has been made, and if you read jean pierre houdin theory of how the pyramids were constructor, you'll realize the purpose of most of those corridors.

Another good video which has again got me thinking. I'm with you on the date but differ upon the original structure. Your presentation on the structural weaknesses to support Anubis, have given me my missing link in relation to what I have always thought. This is that, the statue was originally Anubis. I could never understand why a very religious culture would allow the desecration of one of its greatest monuments to one of its most important deities. This has now been answered to me, it didn't. I've now reached my own conclusion, which I accept is only an opinion. The statue was originally carved as Anubis but as you have just pointed out, it was weak and ultimately broke. I feel that later renovations may of then tried to fix it and may have even initially tried a lion. This too may have fractured with the later architects having no option but to dedicate the broken monument to something a lot more structurally stable, that being a depictions of the current pharaoh. This will explain the differences and anomalies in relation to the appearance and inaccurate dimensions which the Egyptian architects wouldn't have made. This will include the very tiny head and mixed body features of both a jackal and a lion. I now feel the first two depictions of the sphinx were as you state, protectors of the dead. Anubis (jackal) originally, then Akur (lion) and finally the pharoah. Each being a forced change due to the structural weaknesses of the limestone. The Egyptians weren't decimating the monument but rather, trying to preserve it in whichever way was structurally possible.
Your opinion is totally valid and we all have to look at the evidence and make our own minds up and try and share information so others can research, learn and add to the knowledge. 👍
You have forgotten to take into account the geological knowledge of the designers. They also designed and built one or both of the Sphinx temples, using massive megalithic sandstone or limestone blocks. To use blocks of such great size only comes to those with extensive experience in cutting and using huge pieces of stone, and that experience would have come with the knowledge of its strengths and weaknesses. So you have faintly insulted their knowledge and experience to presume that they were not smart enough to foresee that a huge horizontal snout would never break off. And that powerful wind would be no match for gigantic vertical ears. It is unwise to think them so unwise.
I had believed the Temple thesis too, having originally gone for Hancock and Bauval's idea...but I must admit that the arguments put forward here are quite convincing.
Definitely a Lion. And I believe at least two recarvings which reflected the relevant belief system/culture at any giving time. From my own personal observations the original natural protruding sedimentary rock (which is millions of years old) was first carved into a lion by an advanced lost pre-Egyptian tribe in its last days before some natural disaster finished them off. Early Egyptians saw this area as very spiritual seeing the remains of great God like wonders. I think the resculpting was a natural progression.
Because of the sphinx's age though I feel it could have been many different things over the years. I mean it could well have been both a jackal and a lion at different points in history right? Just my thoughts
Nope physics exist, the density of the stone makes it impossible. Test it at home grab a 40 lbs sand bag and hold it away from your body with your arms full extension. You won't be able to do it because of the rule of 1/3 for every foot you go out the load becomes 30% heavier. That means the nose which would have already been massive would not have been able to handle those physics.
The best part of Robert and Olivia Temple's book, The Sphinx Mystery, is the hypothesis that the face was actually recarved to represent the 12th dynasty pharaoh, Nubkaure Amenemhat II.

You claim in previous videos, Menes was the one that start it all in Egypt, after conquer Egypt and unifying the upper and lower regions, and if you compare the Sphinx with other type of Mesopotamian iconography like the Bull Lamassu you will see were Egypt and Menes of Mesopotamian origin get it's inspiration. I think it was a man's head with a animal body from the beginning, but with all restorations over the centuries and due to the softness of the limestone, it lost mass because it have been reshaped over and over again, that's why it's head to body ratio is wrong.

Anubis was an Egyptian deity. The Sphinx is far older than ancient Egypt. Thousands of years older. Chances of it being Anubis is highly unlikely. Too old to have any connection with ancient Egypt.
Good video, the only info I missed here is that sphinxes or Lions where almost always depicted in pairs. I’ve read theories about a much more weathered second sphinx possibly being located 400 feet north, or a second sphinx/Lion being located at the other side of the Nile, which today would be located somewhere in Gizeh city and thus destroyed because of this and offcourse the Nile moving east. To me it seems logical Anubis was looking east to guard the underworld at the west, like a dog looking out the window to guard a house, but if Egyptians placed other Anubisses looking west this doesn’t seem logical. Not sure if I see the curved tail through all the weathering, but good arguments against it being Anubis. It seems unlikely that the master masons who built the pyramids and other amzing buildings around the world would not have realized with what stone they were dealing and let Anubis’ face break off for it to be recarved into a Lion. All in all a very plausible theory, well done👍🏻
Remember there were two lions originally setting adjacent facing East. This area was lush with gardens, birds, animals, water, docks, ports, fountains, trees. Paradise in the truest sense, and this was before the great catastrophe. Early dynastic tribes discovered the ruins and described living in the shadows of the Gods who built them.
HOLY SHIT!!!! 4:16 image is also in Sumer art! The mounds at the back of the lions with the sun in the center is like an ancient Sumer cylinder seal showing identical mounds with a KING in the middle with what looks like electricity coming from him. Ligers are perhaps that largest cats that ever lived since they lack the growth-control gene that's missing from the male lion and female tiger. They can commonly grow to 900 lbs. Anyone who ever encountered such a massive cat would have been totally blown away, and inspired to wish to see it, rather than a dog, memorialized in stone in giant size, befitting its hugeness. The piss-poor 'representation' of a lion in the sky would have been irrelevant. IT is not awe-inspiring, (nor in any way realistic), but an actual full-grown liger is.

I still lean toward jackal. For the tail, it would have been impossible to depict it going downward like in those examples, so they would of course have had to build it laying above ground.
If it was a jackal though, and had that significance, then it does not explain why they would recarve the head. I think it was more likely the lion, possibly carved before the egyptians, and its significance was of no value to them and a pharoah recarved the head.
In terms of ancient Egyptian religion, the jackal of Anubis would make much more sense. Anubis was the guardian of the doorway to the Tuat (underworld), and would make a perfect guardian of the pyramids. Statues of Anubis reclining in this pose have been found, and would make a far more impressive monument than yet another lion.
I thought it was pretty well established that the Great Pyramid was not a burial tomb. Therefore it does not make sense that this is some guardian of the underworld I'm more inclined to agree that it was homage to a Celestial body.

(Freeman, Charles (1997), The Legacy of Ancient Egypt, New York. Reference). The cults of Anubis slowly became less popular as new gods emerged. They were still around, but had not the same glory as the early days. Although I am still optimistic about the Lion because of the Babylonian connection. I to believe early Egypt aristocracy were Part Mesopotamian.
Laura Barber regardless that it wasn't a tomb, the very lives of the Egyptians was intertwined with the worship of the dead because they believed it was evident all the time. They were highly religious people, so death was big thing for them everywhere. The cults of the dead are mysteries of resurrection. The season comes to plant then the crops die and it repeats. Death was always on their minds because they wanted to prepare for it and not invoke their gods. We cannot rule out just because the pyramids aren't tombs, means that there is no reason for Anubis to be there. That's ignorant. We need to understand the Egyptian belief system throughly. Some people even claim all the gods were one god. Dionysian Orphic teachings prove this. (Reference: Religious Thought of the Greeks by Professor Clifford Herschel Moore 1916 pg.54). That being said, we all know Pythagoras's and other Greeks were influenced by the Egyptians and Babylonians. Who is to say that these beliefs weren't adopted like many other traditions. If that is the case, any god is the same god because "as above so below right?". So I see it to be pointless to be arguing that this god is this specific representation of that etc, since the higher initiates all believed one in the same.
David Gonzalez-Herrera the cult of Anubis was a product of Upper Egypt though. In Pre-dynastic Lower Egypt there is no evidence of Anubis being a god - only with the Naqada people in the south. The Naqada brought these gods with them when they conquered the north.

I has a suggestion to consider (although I am not married to it) regarding the erosion found on the Sphinx. It has to do with the suggestion that the pyramids were huge ram pumps used to irrigate the land. I believe that there was an outflow which may have continually flooded around the area of the Sphinx. The erosion around the Sphinx is supposed to push it back to over 10,000 years ago but perhaps the erosion was due to the water pumped through this area.
The sphinx was ancient even to Middle Kingdom people, it’s origins and purpose were unknown. It was redesigned when a restoration project dug out the sand around the sphinx, the head which was above the sand was damaged to be unrecognized as any particular animal. The horizontal erosion destroyed the original tail. It was remade into a feline shape with the pharaoh that conducted the excavation’s likeness.
I'm always excited at the thought of some ancient civilization being responsible for all the so-called Egyptian monuments, and that immigrants found the abandoned Giza plateau as is and founded what we now call dynastic Egypt... Something similar to what supposedly happened in Teotihuacan when the Aztecs found it abandoned... But your arguments are sound... I'm looking forward to your next video.
I’m not a professional historian but I like to dig deep in the past with a lot of topics and in my understanding it was a lions head according to some of the locals. Felines in general do protect something that they love. Just as well as dogs do but the love is resource guarding. A lion, king of the jungle, protecting his king is what makes the most sense.
I've read a tale that way back in time it was first just a rock that looked like a lion, then people carved it into a lion, and later when it eroded too much, they just put a human head :)
I am of the opinion that the Sphinx was originally an outcropping of rock that had the appearance of a lion, (or jackal), and over time was carved to look more realistic. Later, (perhaps much later), the face of the lion or Jackal fell off and the head was recarved as it is today. This would account for the water weathering and the abnormal size of the head.
The aker sphinxes are leopards; the confusion is a common mistake but it is also made throughout history. Linnaeus was not yet born. Notice the leopard skins of shamans, priests, goddesses (Seshat) and royalty (heb sed) . The relationship is spots=stars and this is a world wide theme since antiquity. The same role is attributed to the Jaguar in South America. Even modern world wide and African use of leopard skins hasn't changed (e.g. Zulu's/ or Mobutu of Kongo / heraldry). Was the sphinx a Leopard or a Lion? Not sure. Still closer to thinking it is a lion.
I think the Sphinx was actually a simple rectangular building to start with, and was modified constantly throughout the millenia. Maybe this building was an important tomb or temple belonging to an ancient or even late prehistoric North African culture.

When I was sixteen years old...1970 I did an ice carving at my school of the Great Pyramid and the Sphynx. I got a failing mark because my history teacher, who was one of the judges, told me the Sphynx was not a lion but the head of the Pharaoh Khufu. I argued with him that it was actually a lion. I have no idea how I knew this back in 1970?

Love Graham Hancock! This theory has always resonated and made the most sense to me. Civilizations have come and gone throughout time....wonder how long the current has, until people like us, one day, are discussing what could this statue head , buried in the sand/ocean, with a crown and torch have been? We are truly a species with amnesia.
Consider this: maybe the limestone was stronger 12,000 years ago. As it lost strength over time it would have naturally fallen apart. Who knows?

I agree, it was a lion's head proportional to the paws. However, I believe you need to expand the erosion examination to the entire plateau, which has been shown to be artificially created. Looking at the surrounding area near and at the edges of the plateau should be more revealing. No one has done that, yet.
Before you look at the erosion, check out the level where the lion body is situated. Archaeologists have removed a lot of dirt/sand surrounding the lion body. The sphinx pharaoh head on the other hand is on the ground level just like the surrounding pyramids. In other word, during that ancient Egyptian period, the Egyptians could possibly see only the head of the sphinx and recarve it into a pharaoh's head. Also, check out the back of the body of the sphinx. It is very flat. Meaning that only the very top of the sphinx's back was exposed to erosion as most of the body was buried in the dirt.

I also believe it was from the age of Leo from 35,000 years ago not the last age of Leo 10,000 years ago. This fits the legends and the geological history. Carrying on from there, after erosion and changing times, the head could have easily been reshaped to a jackal and then on to the pharaoh. Or even several pharaohs.

@@AncientArchitectsWhatever the age, one thing is certain, if it was carved by humans then they had behind them a long history of carving stone, accompanied by all of the technical expertise that goes with carving on a gigantic scale. The problem is that we don't see any such earlier history in stone. It is like it appeared out of nowhere with no precedence whatsoever.
Perhaps their ability to cut and assemble megalithic size blocks gave them enough practice that all they needed was a little 3-dimensional visualization and gridding skill to figure out how to do on a huge scale what could and would have previously been done on a much smaller scale.

But, I now believe the Sphinx was originally a lion and my hypothesis is that it was a depiction Sekhmet, who predates Bast, and may also have been symbolized in the Leo constellation. Yeah the tail isn't bushy like a jackals, it's more like a lion's tail. It's hard to know what the head once looked like. How much material was there to work with, how much could have been added on at the time. A lion needs a large mane, a jackal needs tall ears. Perhaps the Sphinx head is so small to give it the effect of being taller than it is. For instance the Statue of Liberty uses forced perspective. But Egyptians didn't use that technique from what I hear. Actually at times they even used a-symmetry to make statues look more realistic.
I think it's safe to say though that is definitely not the original head. The headdress sits too low and flat, it's an alteration. If it were the tall head of a jackal with all that material on top to work with then I wouldn't expect to see that. I also seriously doubt the jackal's neck is wide enough to fit that headdress. But the tail says it all, canine tails never look like that.

Though I will watch the 3100 BC hypothesis video with an open mind, I think the Sphinx was built sometime around 11,000 years ago. Then again, I also consider Zep Tepi being an element of actual history, so I'm definitely stricken by the allure of a super civilization (no Aliens, all Humans).

What I mean is that ultimately it was dictated by humans and their interpretation of events.
If the jackal was "central" to Egyptian lore, the jackal theory would have issues with the timeline of the eroded Sphinx. It would appear that the Sphinx predated Egypt by millennia, so they are not historically concurrent.

Artists, before they carve large pieces of work will first carve a miniature to fine tune details. Those two small stone lions from Kufu’s time look like miniature examples of what the sphinx might have originally resembled. Isn’t there a theory of there being two statues on the plateau? And as they (lions) are also seen in pairs, it would make sense.

Endlessly fascinating subject. I’m no authority on Ancient Egypt, but I admire the grandeur of the monuments, civilisation. I have this curious intuition that many of her secrets lay underneath the Great Pyramid. I just wish that the authorities would, once and for all, allow researchers/archeologists full access to map, as unobtrusively as possible, those areas of interests currently restricted. Including (if permissible) careful excavation of unexplored regions. I can’t help thinking that something extraordinary awaits to be discovered the likes of which the world has never seen. This is well presented. I think it's a lion too. I was thinking though...you say you believe that the Sphinx is over 12,000 years old (as do I), but you're comparing it to Old Kindom art that's at most 4600 years old, and using it as evidence that it couldn't be a jackal. I have a theory that the Sphinx was a lion, and when the old kingdom sprang up they found the giant lion statue and it influenced their early art; they probably worshipped the thing because in their eyes the gods put it there. So I'm thinking those old kingdom recumbent lion statues with the curved tail may have been copies of the giant statue, it would have to be that way if the Sphinx really predates the old kingdom by 7500+ years.

Sitchin's take on this is as follows (from ancient texts). Thoth (Ningashida) the designer of the plateau had his face carved on the Sphinx. When Ra (Marduk) returned to Egypt and found this, he had his son's (Nabu) face carved over it. There may have been other changes later.

Most people who study Egyptology normally stick with the same theory throughout their life .
But the uploader is open minded and obviously is taking a very studius approach to this . He is happy to accept new ideas and move forward , whilst Most others go round and around in a circle .
The Sphinx is the body of a Lion for Leo, and the head of The Water Bearer, for Aquarius. It's all about lining up Orion, The Sphinx, the Pyramids, the shafts, and the ages... There is a video called "The Giza Clock" that I am referencing (but have done a ton of work myself to agree with these views). Aquarius began in 2012 when Leo ended.
This dates the Great Pyramid Complex to 2039 BC. Having said that, I believe that the site itself was chosen as a sacred place much earlier by the Khemetians. There would have been a temple/ shrine of some kind based on the grounding and electro-magnetic traits of the site.
So ya, I have gone back and forth too as I Temple's work is compelling. My guess is that he is a 33rd Degree Freemason and charged with a disinfo. campaign, seriously!!! Also, look into the positioning of the Obelisk at Heliopolis. Like all mysteries it is great fun!!!
Who knows, perhaps the earth did get bumped off its axis??? All I know is that the Precession of The Equinoxes is like a clock running backwards and given the 'math' encoded in The Great Pyramid that these were precise people. When in Egypt recently for a level 2 QHHT course during one of the demonstrations where one of our instructors was put under trance to demonstrate how to properly do proper line of questioning in past life regression a story was revealed of a young man who went on a journey of exploration with two others and stumbled upon what had to have been the Sphinx, but it was described as having the head of a lion. The rest of the story is amazing and to most would seem unbelievable, but to those of us who have experienced the power of QHHT we know that it has over the 50+ years of its practice revealed a multitude of hidden knowledge that was later found to be substantiated by additional historical and archeological evidence.

And it stands guard steadfast over the ancient knowledge that was encoded in the Giza Pyramid structures, looking out for its Master who is so far away now, but is destined to return one day. I've always been an Anubis fan but you've pointed out some valid points I agree with. Dern! here's another belief of mine that has to be rearranged, the Spinx is a Lion after all. I'll be watching Hancocks, "The Lions Gate", again tomorrow. Great video.
Did Shock account for the fact that the body was buried for ages and that a high water table (in addition to rain weathering) might have caused some of the erosion on the lower part of the Sphynx?
Not Anubis, no. Anubis was never associated with the rising sun and would have no reason to be gazing at the eastern horizon. The Sphinx also has a lion tail, not a bushy Anubis tail, and does not have thin forelegs. No, it was always a lion's body, but possibly had a different head at first, a ram head like the avenue of ram head sphinxes at Karnak. If you look at images of those sphinxes you'll see that from the horns back it's exactly like the Giza Sphinx. If you just carved the ram face part back to a human face it would be just like the Sphinx.
So Robert Temple actually missed the most obvious candidate for the original Sphinx design and went with one that is really far fetched. How many types of sphinxes were there? Ram head sphinxes and human head sphinxes, the end. Never was a sphinx consisting of a jackal body and a human head, because why would a king want to be associated with death or a jackal? Show me a jackal body with a human head please. The other way around maybe, but not jackal body human head. And you can't change a jackal body to a lion body anyway, since the jackal is much thinner. Could change a lion body to a jackal body but not vice versa. How the theory manged to hold on this long is a mystery to me. Pretty dubious, all things considered. A real uphill battle flogging that theory. A ram head to king head conversion is very supportable in comparison, like there's the ram head sphinxes at Karnak for all to see.

Thanks. Weird how nobody made that connection before. I did a search just now for "great sphinx originally ram headed sphinx" and got nothing. One page said it may have started as a lion head but I don't know of any theories about a ram head to human head conversion. There's a book for you, dude, or article at least. I won't be writing any myself, just not my thing.
@@RolanRoyce Whatever the original head was, it would have been much larger than the current head. Whether it was a lion, a dog, or a ram, the current head is a tiny blip on the statue, and would have been carved out of the original neck. So the shape of the current Sphinx head has no bearing on what it used to be.
Don't know about Anubis sphinx. But there were indeed Set Animal headed Sphinxs in Egypt.
@@FoolishPrince Right you are, I just googled it, I wasn't aware of that before. A major difference is that the Set headed sphinxes had human arms and hands. Of course with that skinny nose you could never convert it to a Pharaoh's head though. I also missed the falcon headed sphinxes when I wrote my comment. A Pharaoh head could indeed be made that that, in fact after doing an overlay image I know think that's what it originally was. The falcon head extends back quite far, just like the Sphinx headdress, thus explaining perfectly why it's so thick like that.

I agree it was carved from a lion... but ten thousand years ago, what makes us think people looked up at those seven stars and said "that's a lion". Did they also look up at the big dipper and say "that's a bear" ? That is the failed logic with this. I love G Hancock but that's a BIG leap assuming 10,000 years ago that line of stars was a lion to those people.
I agree with the hypothesis of the statue being a lion; it sounds and looks logical. I also like to add that after watching various videos I do believe that the great pyramid was a factory of energy but I do not know of what type. The walls material as well as the size of the building are both ideal for keeping heat and vibrations inside. Evident are marks of heat on the walls and the two airways could be working as release valves? Moreover, the parallel stones above the "kings" chamber remind me of vibration absorbing springs. Have there been tests for radiation?
Moreover, the corridors seem small enough to fit only workers for maintenance purposes. And potentially the heavy door at the beginning of the grand gallery was there for security purposes, sealing potential excess pressure or something. Maybe the grand gallery itself would be a pleasure release chamber as well.
that would be a bit of a stretch, pyramids always had looting problems (sometimes as soon as they finished construction) so many security features has been made, and if you read jean pierre houdin theory of how the pyramids were constructor, you'll realize the purpose of most of those corridors.

Your presentation on the structural weaknesses to support Anubis, have given me my missing link in relation to what I have always thought. This is that, the statue was originally Anubis.
I could never understand why a very religious culture would allow the desecration of one of its greatest monuments to one of its most important deities. This has now been answered to me, it didn't. I've now reached my own conclusion, which I accept is only an opinion.
The statue was originally carved as Anubis but as you have just pointed out, it was weak and ultimately broke. I feel that later renovations may of then tried to fix it and may have even initially tried a lion. This too may have fractured with the later architects having no option but to dedicate the broken monument to something a lot more structurally stable, that being a depictions of the current pharaoh.
This will explain the differences and anomalies in relation to the appearance and inaccurate dimensions which the Egyptian architects wouldn't have made. This will include the very tiny head and mixed body features of both a jackal and a lion.
I now feel the first two depictions of the sphinx were as you state, protectors of the dead. Anubis (jackal) originally, then Akur (lion) and finally the pharoah. Each being a forced change due to the structural weaknesses of the limestone. The Egyptians weren't decimating the monument but rather, trying to preserve it in whichever way was structurally possible.
Your opinion is totally valid and we all have to look at the evidence and make our own minds up and try and share information so others can research, learn and add to the knowledge. 👍
You have forgotten to take into account the geological knowledge of the designers. They also designed and built one or both of the Sphinx temples, using massive megalithic sandstone or limestone blocks. To use blocks of such great size only comes to those with extensive experience in cutting and using huge pieces of stone, and that experience would have come with the knowledge of its strengths and weaknesses.
So you have faintly insulted their knowledge and experience to presume that they were not smart enough to foresee that a huge horizontal snout would never break off. And that powerful wind would be no match for gigantic vertical ears. It is unwise to think them so unwise.
I had believed the Temple thesis too, having originally gone for Hancock and Bauval's idea...but I must admit that the arguments put forward here are quite convincing.
Definitely a Lion. And I believe at least two recarvings which reflected the relevant belief system/culture at any giving time.
From my own personal observations the original natural protruding sedimentary rock (which is millions of years old) was first carved into a lion by an advanced lost pre-Egyptian tribe in its last days before some natural disaster finished them off.
Early Egyptians saw this area as very spiritual seeing the remains of great God like wonders. I think the resculpting was a natural progression.
It was a lion. Egyptians came later and carved their beliefs and language into many structures.
Because of the sphinx's age though I feel it could have been many different things over the years. I mean it could well have been both a jackal and a lion at different points in history right? Just my thoughts

Nope physics exist, the density of the stone makes it impossible. Test it at home grab a 40 lbs sand bag and hold it away from your body with your arms full extension. You won't be able to do it because of the rule of 1/3 for every foot you go out the load becomes 30% heavier. That means the nose which would have already been massive would not have been able to handle those physics.

You claim in previous videos, Menes was the one that start it all in Egypt, after conquer Egypt and unifying the upper and lower regions, and if you compare the Sphinx with other type of Mesopotamian iconography like the Bull Lamassu you will see were Egypt and Menes of Mesopotamian origin get it's inspiration. I think it was a man's head with a animal body from the beginning, but with all restorations over the centuries and due to the softness of the limestone, it lost mass because it have been reshaped over and over again, that's why it's head to body ratio is wrong.

Anubis was an Egyptian deity. The Sphinx is far older than ancient Egypt. Thousands of years older. Chances of it being Anubis is highly unlikely. Too old to have any connection with ancient Egypt.
Good video, the only info I missed here is that sphinxes or Lions where almost always depicted in pairs. I’ve read theories about a much more weathered second sphinx possibly being located 400 feet north, or a second sphinx/Lion being located at the other side of the Nile, which today would be located somewhere in Gizeh city and thus destroyed because of this and offcourse the Nile moving east.
To me it seems logical Anubis was looking east to guard the underworld at the west, like a dog looking out the window to guard a house, but if Egyptians placed other Anubisses looking west this doesn’t seem logical.
Not sure if I see the curved tail through all the weathering, but good arguments against it being Anubis. It seems unlikely that the master masons who built the pyramids and other amzing buildings around the world would not have realized with what stone they were dealing and let Anubis’ face break off for it to be recarved into a Lion.

The mounds at the back of the lions with the sun in the center is like an ancient Sumer cylinder seal showing identical mounds with a KING in the middle with what looks like electricity coming from him. Ligers are perhaps that largest cats that ever lived since they lack the growth-control gene that's missing from the male lion and female tiger. They can commonly grow to 900 lbs.
Anyone who ever encountered such a massive cat would have been totally blown away, and inspired to wish to see it, rather than a dog, memorialized in stone in giant size, befitting its hugeness.
The piss-poor 'representation' of a lion in the sky would have been irrelevant. IT is not awe-inspiring, (nor in any way realistic), but an actual full-grown liger is.

I still lean toward jackal. For the tail, it would have been impossible to depict it going downward like in those examples, so they would of course have had to build it laying above ground.
If it was a jackal though, and had that significance, then it does not explain why they would recarve the head. I think it was more likely the lion, possibly carved before the egyptians, and its significance was of no value to them and a pharoah recarved the head.
In terms of ancient Egyptian religion, the jackal of Anubis would make much more sense. Anubis was the guardian of the doorway to the Tuat (underworld), and would make a perfect guardian of the pyramids. Statues of Anubis reclining in this pose have been found, and would make a far more impressive monument than yet another lion.
But before Osiris was god of the underworld, it was Soker and his cave/realm was guarded by two Aker lions.
I thought it was pretty well established that the Great Pyramid was not a burial tomb. Therefore it does not make sense that this is some guardian of the underworld I'm more inclined to agree that it was homage to a Celestial body.
Ancient Architects Cults of Anubis were very prominent in pre-dynastic Egypt and the Old Kingdom. He was the most important god of the dead until Osiris. Osiris then replaced him. (Freeman, Charles (1997), The Legacy of Ancient Egypt, New York. Reference). The cults of Anubis slowly became less popular as new gods emerged. They were still around, but had not the same glory as the early days. Although I am still optimistic about the Lion because of the Babylonian connection. I to believe early Egypt aristocracy were Part Mesopotamian.
Laura Barber regardless that it wasn't a tomb, the very lives of the Egyptians was intertwined with the worship of the dead because they believed it was evident all the time. They were highly religious people, so death was big thing for them everywhere. The cults of the dead are mysteries of resurrection. The season comes to plant then the crops die and it repeats. Death was always on their minds because they wanted to prepare for it and not invoke their gods. We cannot rule out just because the pyramids aren't tombs, means that there is no reason for Anubis to be there. That's ignorant. We need to understand the Egyptian belief system throughly. Some people even claim all the gods were one god. Dionysian Orphic teachings prove this. (Reference: Religious Thought of the Greeks by Professor Clifford Herschel Moore 1916 pg.54). That being said, we all know Pythagoras's and other Greeks were influenced by the Egyptians and Babylonians. Who is to say that these beliefs weren't adopted like many other traditions. If that is the case, any god is the same god because "as above so below right?". So I see it to be pointless to be arguing that this god is this specific representation of that etc, since the higher initiates all believed one in the same.
David Gonzalez-Herrera the cult of Anubis was a product of Upper Egypt though. In Pre-dynastic Lower Egypt there is no evidence of Anubis being a god - only with the Naqada people in the south. The Naqada brought these gods with them when they conquered the north.

I put what I think, and I'm happy to be proved wrong. I'm just putting out the "lion" side of the theory and the problems with the Anubis theory as far as I can see. I could be wrong, but I can see nothing conclusive.
I have always felt that there may be a second sphinx nearby and that a proper survey of the site may show where.
I've done a video on this a few months ago now - there was a second one, but made of mud brick.

I has a suggestion to consider (although I am not married to it) regarding the erosion found on the Sphinx. It has to do with the suggestion that the pyramids were huge ram pumps used to irrigate the land. I believe that there was an outflow which may have continually flooded around the area of the Sphinx. The erosion around the Sphinx is supposed to push it back to over 10,000 years ago but perhaps the erosion was due to the water pumped through this area.
I wish you were responsible for teaching my kids history at school.
The sphinx was ancient even to Middle Kingdom people, it’s origins and purpose were unknown. It was redesigned when a restoration project dug out the sand around the sphinx, the head which was above the sand was damaged to be unrecognized as any particular animal. The horizontal erosion destroyed the original tail. It was remade into a feline shape with the pharaoh that conducted the excavation’s likeness.

I'm always excited at the thought of some ancient civilization being responsible for all the so-called Egyptian monuments, and that immigrants found the abandoned Giza plateau as is and founded what we now call dynastic Egypt... Something similar to what supposedly happened in Teotihuacan when the Aztecs found it abandoned... But your arguments are sound... I'm looking forward to your next video.

I’m not a professional historian but I like to dig deep in the past with a lot of topics and in my understanding it was a lions head according to some of the locals. Felines in general do protect something that they love. Just as well as dogs do but the love is resource guarding. A lion, king of the jungle, protecting his king is what makes the most sense.

I've read a tale that way back in time it was first just a rock that looked like a lion, then people carved it into a lion, and later when it eroded too much, they just put a human head :)
I think it was a jackal. Mainly because my dog looks like a jackal and he always reminds me of the sphinx. :)

I am of the opinion that the Sphinx was originally an outcropping of rock that had the appearance of a lion, (or jackal), and over time was carved to look more realistic. Later, (perhaps much later), the face of the lion or Jackal fell off and the head was recarved as it is today.
This would account for the water weathering and the abnormal size of the head.
There may actually be a second, ruined sphinx nearby.
Yeah, I did a video on the second Sphinx many months ago - it was probably made of mudbrick, since removed due to the moving/migrating River Nile! 👍

The aker sphinxes are leopards; the confusion is a common mistake but it is also made throughout history. Linnaeus was not yet born. Notice the leopard skins of shamans, priests, goddesses (Seshat) and royalty (heb sed) . The relationship is spots=stars and this is a world wide theme since antiquity. The same role is attributed to the Jaguar in South America. Even modern world wide and African use of leopard skins hasn't changed (e.g. Zulu's/ or Mobutu of Kongo / heraldry). Was the sphinx a Leopard or a Lion? Not sure. Still closer to thinking it is a lion.

I think the Sphinx was actually a simple rectangular building to start with, and was modified constantly throughout the millenia. Maybe this building was an important tomb or temple belonging to an ancient or even late prehistoric North African culture.
