20AB08 ENGINE-COOLING SYSTEM: no emergency signal to coolant pump
Hi, what a great job! And what a unbelievable design to put a fuse into permanently sealed box, and make it only replaceable as a whole 250$ part. From user perspective missing dipstick looked like biggest nonsense, but now I see there are hidden "gems" everywhere.
Hi Afeef, can I have a question? It seems that this 50A fuse is the problem on my car, but before disassemble , I ask friend with some electrical knowledge to have a look and there was one strange thing.
When ignition is on, there is cca 12V on the input terminal and no current on output (connector to the coolant pump), so fuse seems logical. But, when we remove the whole bloody thing out of the car, there is no resistance between input terminal and connector to the coolant pump. Shouldn't be there a resistance when fuse is broken? It's on F20 car, same engine, the parts seems to be the same just in different location.
@Marv43625 I don't know about the resistance thing that you are talking about which is control and BSD signals I guess. But for sure you need to get a 12 volts output from the water pump connector or the ISM water pump output connection which is a single PIN all the time when the engine is running. So as per me your ISM is good and problem will be in your Water pump. You can see the dismantled water pump in my videos, it's complex circuit so you might have to change the Water pump
@@bimmerhacks thanks for reply! engine was not runnig, just ignition switched on. I just swaped new engine, just a core all accessories and wires are from my old engine, including water pump. I wanted to bleed coolant before first start and there is code "coolant pipe missing" We checked the ground, there is no problem. So, I do not have 12V going to the pump from ISM, should it be when igition is on but engine is not runnig?
@@bimmerhacks I'm not saying that my pump is ok, but it was before my conrod jumped out from the engine block, so I want to rule out simple things first :)
@Marv43625 😲 how come conrod jumped out and you still have the engine working!!!
This was such a useful and brilliant video. Thank you so much for posting. You are a genius my friend. Thank you.
You did a great job with this. Thank you for your time. You have been a huge help.
Thanks buddy, very informative… 🙌🏼
Good job explaining everything thanks
That is a very good explanation. Do you know where “terminal 87_1 no power”. I just replaced a Map sensor on my e70 and I’m now getting a short to earth.
As I understand the MAP sensor is directly connected to DME and you might have to check the ISM for any blown fuse as it powers DME. TERMINAL 87 means it should be powered by a relay so relay powered fuses are 4,5 and 6. 5 is the more likely 20A fuse. Make sure the MAP sensor is a good and genuine one, it can cause no start issues, also check its wires for any damage in it's path
@@bimmerhacks I took apart the ism last year and didn’t find any blown fuses. I’ve been having intermittent “terminal 87_1 no power” for a good 4-5 years. I could drive for 300 miles and no code And when I get back I. The car it will pop right up then go away.
@kevinphothisen5559 it could be any of your sensors. Not an expert advice but as far as I understand
Thanks bro just the video I needed
Thank you for letting me know it helped
Thank you so much brother!
What causes the fuse for the pump to pop usually?
Short circuit of wires
@bimmerhacks I figured, more so can I be anywhere on the harness as long as it's connected to that module?
Trying to figure out prevention, I'm considering new harness when I pull my engine fully, but also not sure if I want to commit
@@kevinyuan380 I didn't understand your question?
@@bimmerhacks can a short that affects the pump happen from any region of the harness, or only from the sections that directly plug into it.
@kevinyuan380 if you're referring to water pump, the water pump is prone to internal water leak within and cause the fuse to blow. Other chances are less unless roddents get in to your engine bay and cut the wires or any recent work done in which the water pump wire got tightened in between the intake manifold or so. By the way the water pump wire is the thick red wire going via the top of oil filter housing in N55 engine
Great video. Thanks
Hi, thanks for the video! Getting the same error codes... but my pump sometimes works, sometimes not. The same applies for bleeding process. ISM is new, it gives 12V to the pump, the wires to water pump and ground cable also seem ok. Does this mean my water pump is faulty and goes away?
Yes your water pump is faulty. Usually the WP will fail by 200000kms
Thanks buddy, your video help me a lot with finding problem with my car. I have a question, do you know what components the 15N
Connector A46 5B I believe it's for injectors and coils.
I am in vacation and no computer to check the circuit in detail
This was a great video. very informational. I do have a question. I have a 2011 BMW F10 with the N52 engine. I have 4 blown fuses in my ISM. Car cranks but does not start. I replaced all fuses, however they all burnt again. Could this possibly be a faulty DME?
Fuse 1 = DME Main
Fuse 3 = DME Radiator shutter Drive, exhaust flap
Fuse 4 = Ignition and fuel injection (DME 6, 8)
Fuse 5 = Ignition and fuel injection (DME 10, 8)
I connected the car to ISTA and I have some concerning errors.
1F4A08 = Load-shedding relay for ignition and fuel injection system: not tightened.
S 0751 = Permanent SAE fault codes stored
801A52 = SINE: Faults when adjusting coding data
801419 = CON: operating unit, centre console, short circuit to positive.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Thank you for your appreciation. Question!!! did this happen all of a sudden or there was any work done to the car or car kept unused for long time??? I would suggest u to disconnect Injectors 1, 3 and 6 first and see if there is any change in fuse blowing OFF. Hope u have already checked the wiring harness as there are cases when rodents get in to engine bay and make short circuit. Let me know the result.
@@bimmerhacks To answer your question, I work from home, so I hardly drive the car. A month before, the car stalled while I was on the road, but I was able get it started. However, it was pulling a code for the VANOS solenoid and had a rough idle. I purchased 2 new original solenoids and replaced them. The car started and was idling smooth as butter. After 2 days of sitting, I was going to move the car, but it would not start. It cranked but did not start. I checked as much of the harness as I can but did not spot any signs of rodent damage. This weekend I will try your suggestion and let you know what I find Thanks again for responding and the awesome video.
@@Ariana-fh8dd there should be a plastic box managing the cables next to the VANOS solenoid. The wires can get jammed between the box n get short circuit, if u had done any works there it might be the spot to look on
@@bimmerhacks I had some suspicion in that area. I will check this weekend and let you know what I find. Thanks again.
I checked all the wiring in the plastic box and did not see anything visually wrong. I cleaned some old oil off but there was no open wiring of concern, however I'm not very electrical savvy but I did a continuity test on one of the ground pins on the DME and my meter did not give any sound. The 6 PIN connector for the ignition and fuel has 5 grounds and one of them was not grounding. I unplugged the connector from the ISM and the DME and I did get continuity. When I checked the pins directly from the DME I was getting continuity from all PINS but that one. I hope this all makes sense. I'm thinking there may be a short in the DME itself. I checked ISTA to see if I can get the engine Wiring diagram, more specifically for the Ignition/fuel but it was not pulling up. By any chance do you have the diagram?
thanks for the great job ! its really helpful . but I have a problem with fuse #15 for the DME SUPPLY KEEP BLOWING . ITS PIN #12 RED WIRE FOR TRIM 15 SUPLY . do you have any idea what it can be ? I'm assuming the DME IS SHORTED ! .. IF U HAVE AN ANSWER PLEASE LET ME KONW . THANKS A LOT
Give me correct fuse number in ISM. fuse number 15 or 15 Amps fuse?!!
I baught a 2011 bmw 116i with the N13 engine, the Valvetronick is on the side almost to the back of the engine When I got it the person told me it shuts down on them and when we scan it I got the Vavetronick code so I baught a new valvertronic moto and just take out the old one and put back the new one it was tight to get in but use an aulinkey at the back of it to spin it in and tighten the bolts every time in goes in a little. When we got it all the way in, we try to start it and it never starts just turn over so we put an autel scanner on it and whenever we try to relearn it, it come to a part that it says voltage low or not reach something like that but we get the car to start and it runs a little and start to vibrate and have a little sound like it wants to back fire if that make sense, then shut back down about 4 times so I am trying to find out if there is a relay or fuse or even ECU problem, Please let me know what you think? I check all fuse in the engen area I pull out the box under the glove compartment nex to the door and check it for burn or broken fuse also in the trunk nex to the battery and I pull out the side peace in the trunk and check those fuse as well but all looks good to me, the phues I check with a tester and I ask a electrician to test the black regulator that is in the engine bay nex to the inches on the car bonnet and he say it was working, also take out that little black box at the front of the engine that you have to cut open to check fuse and they all good as well
As far as I know if the valvetronic motor has been disconnected without disconnecting the battery it will change the alignment of the valve system/eccentric shaft and it can cause rough idle to no start. Valvetronic learning process will not do anything good otherthan ruining your engine. So i would suggest to take the Valvetronic system out check its position by an expert better check eccentric shaft position sensors condition(Sensor might be faulty). Please keep in mind that I am not an expert just a BMW owner ;)
Before doing these make sure you have new Battery. A battery that is old can make your diagnosis go wrong. It might just be a battery issue.
Where is the electrical water pump fuse on a 2014 740i
Send me your email address. I'll send you the location picture from TIS
Question ... I have all those codes how ever my pump is working at least all the way up to 200 degrees on my scanner the codes say intermittent except 20AB08 says permanent. M
It's the Water pump getting faulty due to water ingression. It's a sophisticated part. Just replace it
Yeah I'm going that route
How did you make sure that the cause was this ISM? I have a similar issue with my f10 528i 2015 and I'm not sure whether it's the ISM or damaged water pump. Any clue how to know that?
Read the error code. Any code that pushes you towards the components of engine Bay or DME. ISM is the first thing to inspect
So when you pop that open how does is close back?
U have to apply silicone glue to stick it back.
Thank you for this video! Very informative! Do you know what those 3 relays control?
Controls the flow of current in accordance to the control from JBE. I did not go for details, you can get further detail from TIS
@@bimmerhacks I do not know what TIS is. I have issues with my valvetronic servo motor (2DE3- VSM Line disconnect. I opened up ISM but the fuse #6 is fine. I assume that the relay that is next to it is bad. It is N55 engine.
@@pchon66 Apologies for the late reply. As per my understanding if the problem is related to a fuse or relay in the ISM then there will be more than one code. Your code looks like the Valvetronic motor itself has died or the transistor in the DME controlling the Valvetronic motor. I would recommend you to take it to a BMW specialist.
@@bimmerhacks To answer my own question:
From left (fuse #1) to right (fuse #7)
Relay #1 Digital Motor Electronics main relay
Relay #2 Relay for ignition and fuel injection
Relay #3 Valvetronic relay
If BMW specialists new what they are doing my problem would be resolved. Car was in the shop 2 times. The only thing that they suggest to do is to replace valvetronic motor , eccentric shaft and harness (from DME to valvetronic motor). It was done, but was the problem resolved? Hell NO
Does one of those also control the radiator fan?
As far I know only Fuse03 powers the radiator shutter drive. The radiator gets direct voltage and is controlled by the DME as far as I understand.
Can someone please tell me if this type of module if a plug and play or does it need to be coded/programmed to vehicle
It's plug n Play.
Hi, I'm would like to seek for your advice. My X5 transmission fault code show Oil temperature. After replace the engine oil temperature sensor it still pop out the transmission check light. Did you encounter this issues before? Thank you..
You're saying that the error code of transmission oil temperature high pops up, that means the transmission control unit EGS sends this message and it's not engine oil temperature. There is a radiator for gear oil in the engine bay below the radiator fan it might be blocked or the gearbox might be getting faulty.
By the way I did not encounter this problem yet but as far as I know the gear will not shift to reverse if the temperature goes high
@@bimmerhacks did you know what is the problem? My car transmission check light pop out and early morning couldn't switch the gear and need to on/off the engine few time only will be able to shift the gear.
@@jacksonchew9508 not sure as it can be probably the gear oil pump inside the transmission might have got faulty. If u can hear metal pieces sound from transmission that would point to any broken planetary gears, if the sound is while in idle it can be torque converter.
Better to install a used transmission rather than trying to repair it. It's a complicated unit
U can hear metal pieces clicking sound.
My f2 fuse DME(pin 12) keeps burning after every 2 days
when it's burnt the car cranks but won't start .... i checked the wire going to dme its not short circuit..... i just replace the fuse and everything gets fine for few days but again the fuse gets burnt ... so this is 100% dme needs to be replaced right? ....
