Thanks for the tour! Always good to see how others work around the limitations of their space.
Nicely done.
Thanks for checking it out! Was there anything that surprised you?
Eric, thank you for the tour. I really like how organized your space is, small as it may be.
Thanks for the Tour Eric and it’s impressive what you’ve done and your organizational in a smaller footprint. I’ve supported a fellow creator and Columbus brother from early on and congrats on your growth and 20k sub milestone! Lol I’m now looking at getting better square clamps after seeing your woodpecker collection. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼
Thanks so much for following along!
Yes! I love to do tool research by watching tool reviews and challenges by others with more experience! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!!
I'm glad you posted this because I've turned my spare room into a shop with the same room dimensions. Good stuff.
That’s awesome! My number one tip is to not collect junk you don’t use
The box fan w/ a filter has higher CFM than almost all the commercial ambient air filters. I can't think of many reasons to not use the $20 fan.
It’s been working great for me!
Thanks for the tour! Nice to see your workspace.
Thanks for checking it out!
I am totally impressed with how organized you are in a small space!
Thanks, Tom! It’s all about getting rid of unnecessary stuff!
Great video. I love seeing how other DIYers utilize small space. Really well organized shop.
Thanks for the support, gene!
Great job!! Always wondered where you hid everything 😂 Would love to see you do a sandpaper review.
I don’t think I could get anywhere near the sandpaper review that Katz Moses just did 🤣
Very informative, and your a good speaker...not boring...great tour!
Thanks Jeff!
I'm completely amazed by your level of organization in such a small space. If I was a 1/10th as organized as you I'd be a more productive man. I am woodworking in a small, city apartment, except I don't have a garage,or basement so I'm using my 16x20 foot attic, so everything I have I had to haul up three flights of stairs, including all my lumber, cast-iron top table saw and everything else. I feel your pain on the heat,in the summer it was miserable woodworking, so much that I procrastinated doing large projects, thankfully it's cooled down now so I've started doing more projects.
My number one tip is to get rid of things that you don’t use often. No sense in having clutter 😀
Filling those aluminum clamps with a piece of wood makes a WORLD of difference in their rigidity. Definitely worth taking the time to upgrade them, Paul Sellers style.
I saw some other folks recommended that too! I’ll definitely give it a try! Thanks!
Great Setup you have. I work out of a similar size space but just don't have the attic storage. I also just got the Delta version of that table saw, same issues with the wings, but its a huge upgrade from a small hobby one. The Trim router I can recommend the Makita trim router, It has worked fantastic for me.
I am just!,beginning my woodworking journey, so equipment/tool reviews are very much appreciated by people who have used them. So thanks!😊
Me: "Hey, this guy does woodworking in his apartment, just like me! I wonder how he does it. . ."
Eric: "I rent a garage."
Me: "Oh. So. . . no workbench in your bedroom then? Okay. Probably best."
Thanks for watching Richard
I’m just loving going through your videos, I think this is no4, trouble is it’s 2am now, never mind it’s Sunday tomorrow, I’m hopefully going to get some of my workshop floor down but if not I can always watch some more of your videos 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much for the support, Stephen!!
Fine! You could call it, “I have an entire workshop, whilst living in an apt.”😂What palm sander would you recommend? I’m returning my Ryobi today. The dust comes out of every orifice BUT the one into the bag.
The biggest bummer about apartment garage workshops is there’s never enough power
Thanks for the added insight on the power issue and your planer. I’m building a garage and asking for a higher power outlet in case I get a big tool (that won’t fit in my basement shop). I thought 120 would do it because most of the band saws and planets are 120 voltage. But maybe not?
So...what happens...if...say...your landlord shows up for a surprise inspection and you're busted?
Eric, I think your shop is set up fantastically for the restraints that your under. I was really looking forward to the shop truck!!! Everyone knows that a Honda Civic is the BEST vehicle to transport lumber!! LOL!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Hahah that Honda Civic puts in a lot of work
A garage like that would make me very happy. I'm literally doing all my woodworking projects out of 12x12, 12x14 including closets in my apartment. Table saw, chop saw, router, workbench, wood rack, clamps, hand tools compressor, drill press.... Even a secondary desk/bench. I honestly don't know how I'm fitting it all in there with my queen bed and clothes. Portable tools that double with other tools and organization is key to making that work. But it is possible.
Keep on going! I started out in the parking lot of my apartment so i know the struggle 😀
Well organised shop you gave me some good ideas how to re-organise my working space .. I have a double garage but can use only half… car is in the other half … thank you for the video
Thanks for watching, Matteo! Any projects you’d like to see me try in the future?
Nice video giving me inspiration to make a few changes to my garage setup, although mine is a detached unit from my house and I have an AC window unit I put in this summer. I need to get it better organized like you. But the door to door gasoline salesman at the end of the video? That's random. haha.
It’s a tv show reference 😀
you can cut 1x1's to internally fit the length of the harbor freight aluminum clamps to stiffen them up. it's a cheap fix but it works.
This channel grows on me every time I watch another video.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it 😀
I really appreciate the reviews of the tools especially the Ryobi brand. I am on their system and you allow me to avoid buying junk. I do however have a question about the Kapro try square in the "junk drawer for squares" , where I live Woodpeckers are terribly expensive and I was wondering if a Kapro would be a good alternative to the Woodpeckers 1281 or Precision Triangle?
It’s in the junk drawer because it wasn’t very accurate
Good video man. Good use of a small shop area, and surprised the apartment complex allows you to do it. In regards o the Ridgid spindle/belt sander, what would you replace it with?
🤣 they don’t allow me. It’s explicitly listed in the lease that you can’t run tools. For what I do, I’d rather save up for a full sized edge sander, but I’ll likely wait until I get out of the apartment
Can you please speak more about how you design and build your stuff? I’m interested in the business side too. Thanks for sharing.
Hi from One Handed Maker in Australia.
What an amazing space you have created. It presents well on video.
I have subscribed and will watch more of you videos.
Regards James
Thanks for watching! I truly appreciate the support!
I would love the many of space you have... I’m currently in rented accommodation with just a 8 by 5 foot shed - in the UK we generally have less space and I end up doing a lot of bigger projects outside!
I started all of this in the parking lot of my apartment so I appreciate any space I can get! 😀
Just a tip on the Rigid sander…. Don’t plow your material into it and it’ll work fine. Use some skill.
Thanks Jim
Instead of that big fan you can by a necklace fan. It's like when you put your hear phone over your shoulders anda around your neck but it's a fan directly to your head 😀
That Ridgid saw looks a lot like the Delta saw
That’s because it’s made by their same parent company
Having your dust collector above you can cause some issues, not to mention the heat could eventually destroy the motor. Rockler DustRight has wallmount models that are really powerful and effective and for a little bit more $$ will offer greater flexibility.. just a thought
i'm not really concerned about breaking that cheap dust collector. Having the additional floor space is much more valuable to me 😀
This is awesome man, I had no idea you were in an apartment garage. Great use of space and a great example to people out there who think you need a massive shop to build anything!
The number 1 key is not buying stuff you don’t NEED. I run a pretty simplistic tool set, but it works alright!
A lot of times (in other videos) you make really weird comparisons of tools from low end to high end, but it's really helpful when you just say what you like and don't like about something as a standalone item. This is great here.
Some thoughts for some of the cheaper items you mention. I recommend putting some sanded 3/4" plywood in those HF bar clamps in the grooved backs to strengthen them. It'll relieve a lot of that twisting issue.
Secondly, yeah those .99 cent glasses from HF are great because they're only 99 cents, but the Milwaukee 3-glassware packs are better and you don't have to drive in stop and go traffic along 161 to get them. You're wasting as much money on that road as just popping over to one of the box stores by Sawmill or Easton.
Finally, if you hate any tool you have, definitely strip the tool down for any of the parts that are useful, like the motors or even just the bearings. They'll be integral in anything you do in the future and is way cheaper than getting from McMaster Carr.
Hope this helps. Great vid!
I wish I was handy enough to make small tool parts versatile 🤣 I can barely glue two pieces of wood together
Nice setup
Thanks! You should try to build a model out of lego!
I'm impressed how you got so much in such a small space. You are very well organized, I just wonder if your home is as organized as your shop.
Your voice, and manner of speaking are so similar to another UA-camr named John Fish. The similarities are so close, if you told me you were related, I'd def. believe it.
Thank you for watching!
i love how he can do that! (:
Who is he?
Nice Shop. Millennials are so much better at everything! I should start a business called "hire a Millennial"
Well great, I just added 3 more things to my order list, the Kreg Bandsaw Fence, a couple of Woodpecker positioning squares, and the Elgin headphones. You've officially become my most expensive UA-cam subscription.
🤣 at least those are relatively inexpensive!
@@SpencleyDesignCo I didn't mention you actually made me buy a new and better table saw already, so your "bill" is easily exceeding a thousand bucks in just a few short weeks. Seriously though, awesome channel, I'm enjoying the heck out of your content.
I really appreciate the support, Pam! I’m trying my best to break into this UA-cam scene but it’s TOUGH!
@@SpencleyDesignCo It is crazy, and so frustrating. Keep it up though, your videos are excellent.
Thank you, Pam! If you have any friends that might be interested in the videos, sending it to them is SUPER helpful 😀
Great video, always looking to improve my small beginner space. Do you think your dust collection unit would be better if it was closer to level with your tools? I am looking to get that same dust collection unit. Thanks and keep making.
This dust collector is pretty awful even right next to the tool lol. I highly discourage you from picking this one up
a Bridge City Tools square in the junk drawer?!? If that's what you have in the junk drawer, what's in your NICE drawer?
Oh Woodpecker's stuff. SWEET! Represent Ohio, man! I'm in Columbus too, nice tour!
I’d much rather rep Ohio! I got rid of all my bridge city/Harvey stuff
This is a great video, all around. Although, I'm disappointed you didn't show off your broom...Nice to see how other people function in a small shop, but you're the exact opposite of me.
I actually considered doing an entire video about my broom. It’s a real workhorse!
Appreciate the tour. I think you mentioned that you are on a single circuit. I’m in the same boat and looking at adding dust collection. Do you have any issues with decreased power at the tool when you turn on your dust collector?
Are all your electric tools 110 volt? How many outlets do you have? Do you have issues with breakers popping when you’re working?
I've never seen your channel before. Could you take a mini air conditioner and make spacers to blow heat out under a slightly raised door to make it more tolerable to work? As for glue and stuff, I have seen glue cabinets with a small incandescent bulb and a thermostat to keep the glue from freezing.
10x16 is not 180 lol. But that’s what makes a good wood worker, not knowing math 😂
It's nice to encounter another woodworker in Columbus, Ohio..... I also have everything woodworking in my apartment.
That’s awesome, George! Thanks for following along!
Agreed 💯. It’s supporting fellow wood workers and DIY’ers in Central Ohio. 👍🏼
You’re too kind! Thanks!
was this guy in always sunny in philly the door to door gas salesman thing
I worked out of an apartment shop for a while also. I had an apartment above it, so it had a finished interior and ceiling. It only had one plug on the wall and one on the ceiling for the opener. How much power do you have in there? I blew the breaker a couple times running the planer and a shop vac.
I have one single 15 amp circuit
Do you have any first aid kit? Fire extinguisher? Great video!
14:35 the new full size ryobi HP tools are way better lol, also have you tried the 2nd gen ryobi sander?
I have not tried them yet
I have the saw.. it's great for $650 including shipping!
Can’t find much better deal than that!
See Paul Sellers video on improving those long aluminum bar clamps. Improves them from twist about 75%. I cut strips of plywood and put some polyurethane on the wood before inserting to keep wood from delaminating. Will make you happy you have the clamps I promise.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely check that out!
Your use of space is pretty impressive. Even more impressive is your lack of excess stuff that doesn't get used.
🤣 I purge unused tools all the time on Instagram
@@SpencleyDesignCo all is good except for the Ryobi
Ryobi makes some great stuff, but at the same time makes some junk too
@@SpencleyDesignCo I was messing with you because I am a Flex Power tool and Milwaukee fan boy. Honestly speaking I don't know much about Ryobi because non of the other carpenters on any job site I have being on ever use that brand.
What I like is that Ridgid Sliding miter saw it reminds me of the Bosch.
I’m likely going to get rid of that miter saw so I don’t really have a use for it
Sometimes free or cheap tools are too expensive!
Got me scared when you commented on the Ryobi palm sander. I just got a new one. I HOPE it survives better than yours. Thanks for the tour.
I hope it works well for you! I’ve had great experience with a lot of ryobi tools, but that sander has been a nightmare for me
Your parallel clamps are great but the harbor freight aluminum can be modified to be beasts! I've filled them with hardwood and they are super strong. And I just found your channel and am just playing it as I work my 12 hour night shift! Good work!
Thanks for watching, Jeff! You’ve got a lot of catch up on 😀
@@SpencleyDesignCo absolutely! Well now I'm onto the podcast because I hit almost all of your videos! Wish I would have seen your rigid miter saw video before I bought myself one for Christmas. I've learned the technique to minimize deflection but I will definitely be upgrading soon! I know you're not a miter saw guy but I use mine all the time, so I need to have one
Ohhh yeah that miter saw is rough! Hope you’re enjoying the podcast! We have a blast recording it
I have been. making platform beds for 15 years. My. shop is 12' x 20' and I work with finished pieces over 80". You can do amazing things in a small space. I test assemble every bed in the shop right where it's made.
Here is my secret ... MOBILITY, keep it mobile, don't let your table saw stand still.
How big of a circuit does your Dewalt planer run on? I still work out of my garage and only have two 15 amp circuits, I'd love to get a helical head for it, but don't want to be throwing the breaker anytime I use it. The general consensus I've read says they need more amps to run them with the upgraded head. It's great to see someone else dealing with the small shop limitations as well.
I run off of a 15amp circuit and I’ve blown the breaker significantly less after installing the helical head
@@SpencleyDesignCo that’s awesome! I’ve had the same experience as you, the Dewalt planer blades seemed to be made from aluminum cans or something, after my first big project they were so dull that the planer couldn’t even feed the boards through. I cleaned the rollers and thought it was because of the 15 amp outlet. I switched the knives on a whim and it works great again.
🤣 I went through 2 sets of knives (4 total sides since they’re double sided) in one project. I instantly went online and bought the helical head
I’m all rigid anymore if they have the tools I need my friends say good bye bananas and hello oranges lol besides my trusty 14 inch bandsaw that I have used for many years with O issues (Rockwell model 14) besides that it’s all rigid for my furniture business for the last 3 years I can’t speak of the life time warranty that’s because in the last 3 years never any issues. I just built a 12x12x10 wood shop and I’m looking for organization for all my tools etc it is 2 rooms the extra room is3x12 for my dust collector and my bandsaw and compressor 27gal upright
I'm actually surprised you don't have a small drill press (unless I missed it)
I do not have one. It’s something that would be nice to have, but I’ve never really had a need for it
Dude, didn’t anybody ever wonder why is there always saw dust outside that neighbor garage?
Nope
My shop is 9x13. I know what it's like working around equipment.
Thank you for watching
Great set up hopefully soon you can get a bigger shop. Ever think of moving out of Columbus? You could probably get a house with a bigger garage or pole building for what you paying for living in apartment Columbus just a thought
Honestly, I do really feel the need to get more space. That just gives me the opportunity to collect stuff I don’t need 🤣
Columbus is still a good bang for your buck with tons of job opportunities. The last few years the rent and cost of homes is just catching up with other parts of the world.
@@SpencleyDesignCo I’ve never mentioned this on here, but if you need Realtor help and decide to start looking or set up on searches as the ones online aren’t updated quick enough for how fast the market is just let me know as I can hook you up with the best agent in Central Ohio. Happy to help another brother from Columbus. 👍🏼
Don't get the Ryobi. Got it.
Curious to see what you will use to replace the stamped steel wings on the table saw.
Most likely just gonna build some panels out of Baltic birch ply
@@SpencleyDesignCo I have the same saw while assembling it I was thinking what if I insert and fasten MDF Or Plywood into the wings and fasten it?
That would work too!
You said you have sanding sleeves for your router. How does that work? Is there a bit you use for that? Thanks!!
They're actually just drum sanders for a drill press, but they work great for a router on a low speed. Here's a link to something similar to what I've got: amzn.to/3EuwCtw
@@SpencleyDesignCo
Sweet! Thanks for the link. I have the same thing for my drill bit I think this will work great in the router table.
Thanks for the tour!
Sure thing! Just make sure to turn your router speed ALL THE WAY DOWN or you’ll burn your wood
Eric, 10x16=160 sq ft. I say that with all the love I can muster. Excited to watch this video!
10*16=160 for those keeping track at home
👍
You should do more tool reviews and comments on them I'd say so far you've saved me at least $500
They seem to be pretty popular! I just did one on my table saw and miter saw and people seem to like them
@@SpencleyDesignCo I've watched both and I believe I commented on them, I also use a similar Ridgid table saw I passed on the combo sander pretty expensive in Canada Your review clinched it was a dog
Don’t take my word for gospel. It’s just one persons opinion 😀
I agree and spot on with some of the Ryobi tools. If it’s the only thing that fits your budget I understand and personally have some Ryobi tools as well, but you pay for what you get.
I’ve got some ryobi tools that I absolutely love, and some that were trash haha
Why have you bought 12 of the cheap sander???
Him math good! 10x16... 180sqft. I wish I could math so I gain an extra 20sqft in my shop.
I wish you all luck in this world, but it is against any apartment management rules to use premises for personal business 😢. Be careful…..
Thank you
