Everyone is entitled to their views, but I don't know why some comments below, plus these commentators are weighing in on Week 1 of VNL this year. If we look at the body of work professionally, Carlini outweighs all setters as Champions League Winner, and league wins and standings overall with her teams. @Everett, how can you say she doesn't mesh well with this team? She was an integral starter since the 2019 VNL Finals, 2020 & 2024 Olympic Qualifiers. Carlini is an excellent defender, all around ball handler. @Rob, she doesn't play well off the bench?, she has finished games for Hancock (2022 VNL vs. Thailand, 2023 VNL Bronze vs. Poland (although close loss.). And this isn't "Jordyn Poulter's team." Volleyball is an all around team effort. If Poulter is injured, or needs to be subbed out (3 VNL losses this year she started), i think the term "back up setter" is outdated. It's frustrating that there are certain players that will always get a nod. I guess the coaches don't really take into account the roster accomplishments ie, Jenna Gray (2 Championships and MVP in Brazil), or the best NCAA players, O'neal, Kipp (confused as to why she's never played with the Senior Team), Madi Skinner, etc. Plus i think Hentz is a much better defense player, but hopefully next time around. I believe these are all capable players, some should have been let go, and other young talent as i've named should be given more opportunities, but this is how it is...

Actually, Karch has done that before where he gives the captain role, especially in the VNL, to a player who isn't going to feature in the finals, or in the "bigger" tournament later in the summer.
Also, if you don't let Hancock utilize her jump-spin serve, that drastically reduces her impact, in my opinion.
Carlini will be in the double sub role, but I personally would like to see her start a few matches in VNL week 3 just to see what she can do with the Olympians instead of the team we got in week 1.

Rob, I was hoping you would ask kiraly about the reduction on micah’s serve!
Anyways, you guys are spot on as usual but I do disagree about micah being the “better volleyball player.”
All setters have their pros and cons, for me:
carlini is more overall. She is the best blocker of the 3, and significantly better in floor defense.
Poutler is the best setter of the 3, with a good serve along with it.
Michah’s biggest strength was maybe her serve, and the fact that they reduced it, fked up her chances already. She is the most agressive st the bet but in the end you don’t bring a setter based on anything other than who can give your hitters the best chance of scoring, and that is why poutler is no.1.
However, the us fans must have amnesia because carlini was no.1 all the way up until the roster for the last olympics was announced. So the fact she wasn’t sent then instead of micah and now she has a shot people are crying is pretty comical. If anything, its even now😬 Actually, if anything, this discourse should be on whether poutler or carlini should be the no.1 setter, or if it should be carlini and micah instead.
Poutler is not the same player from last olympics. Carlini had a very weak team week 1 and im not basing her current form based off of that.Carlini is hungry and has alot she wants to prove to many people in these comments. I think she should hit more pipe and more rotations in the opposite side, to give thompson a break.
I also think carlini has a better connection with thonpson, whoin my opinion, along with obogu AND Wong, are significantly below the level they were at this point last olympic cycle.
I want to say its a bit unfair because we have so much depth, we don’t need to ride on the cocktails of what someone achieved 4 years ago. we have viable options like o’neal, hentz, and a few good opposite hitters (NOT CUTTINO) , but for some reason haven’t gotten to play with team usa much, but its too late now. I respect kiraly and if im not mistaken he Michelle and foluke were also coming back from a hiatus (?) last cycle but their experience proved to be worth it. However, they were already in olympic shape during that vnl season.
I wont even say much about the plummer discourse. Volleyball fans are very one track minded. Serve receive is important but its not the only thing in volleyball. We ignore all the things plummer brings to the table because its easier to notice weakness than lets say, what a 6’6 block and do to trouble the minds of a big opposite hitter. Her track record this past season speaks for itself. She can be a big key and her receiving and especially back court defense has improved. I think she should be utilized back row more and they need to remember that she is also a really good opposite hitter.

Everett calling ppl "stupid" for not thinking Plummer was a lock is both annoying and well, stupid. It's not the craziest opinion to have considering her serve-receive and defense is not as strong as some of the other outsides that were cut. If you watched how she served in Arlington, it wasn't pretty either. I watched her season at Imoco but let's not pretend like she didn't have those weaknesses there too. She was often subbed out or choked with little room to cover on serve-receive. It was less noticeable because Robinson and De Gennaro command the back court.

Carlini makes any team she plays in more resilient. That is what USA team is lacking at the moment. Resilience paves the way for closure, closing the set that is. This is what we (Turkiye) struggled in the past and USA was very good at it, because you had Bartsch, a younger Larson and Kelsey, amazing three players that just digged every ball from the grave and gave that extra boost in defense. Now you might be better at attacks, I don't know but you will definitely miss Bartsch and Larson at her peak. Carlini defends like a libero, which is not a bad addition to your team.

They can both play either position and have in college but for the past 4 years they have been doing what they are doing now. Her one saving grace is her passing and she was even inconsistent in that. Actually, none of the USA players on vakifbank have had a good season (frantti, obogu, thompson), thats some suspicious shit if you ask me. Thompson should have stayed in the Italian league...maybe something is going on in her personal life? She gives that vibe.
Hancock's serve was a hugeeee strength of hers and now its been reduced... USA volleyball is based off of a deep roster and balanced system; kiraly doesn't need to be perfect in his desicion as we have a chance to win even if we don't send all of the best players per position.

    • @F355
      @F355 Місяць тому

Thompson never deserved the money she got in any club she was in, that is why she jumped from team to team in Turkiye and Italy. She plays better in the national team but she is inconsistent. Vakif got her because every other player was taken already and Thompson was their unwilling choice + Guiddetti's lack of vision.
      Thompson played:
1 year in Fenerbahce in 2019-20
2 years in Eczacibasi in 2020-22 (Was injured mostly and was in the bench, as Boskovic is the main opposite)
1 year in Milano in 2022-23
1 year in Vakif in 2023-24
She was an average player at best in all of these teams.
