It's called "multiscale" or "fanned fret". Mostly, it's to give more depth to the lower strings by lengthening the scale, while making the higher strings brighter and easier to bend. A lot of guitarists also find it more natural to play. Normally seen on 7- and 8- string guitars. Getting more common on basses, too.
