It's crazy because a 4.5 in Cali feels like wait was that an earthquake? Can anyone from New York actually imagine what just happened in Taiwan?
I'm someone who lives in New York State. Unlike California it's rare to have a earthquake here. The majority of buildings here, are not earthquake proofed! I live in the northeastern part of New York State, just minutes from Canada and Vermont. In the 58 years that I have lived here, we experienced 1 5.3 earthquake. So some people might get a little freaked out when it happens here. Because California gets them all the time, you are use to them! I'm pretty confident in saying that, if it's your very first time feeling a quake anyone would likely be nervous about it!
I'm with you. I don't even get why a quake that small is even newsworthy... I'm from Alaska, by the way.
@@chriskleven5441 Just so you understand, this small earthquake caused a lot of damage around the epicenter! Homes and businesses were destroyed! I would think that is News worthy!
4.3 in kansas before, exactly....
Was that an earthquake?
Mainly because it's abnormal here.
I think our faults and the limestone beds shields our buildings some, the ground is more "mushy"
@@carriecree1789 Yes same as California the ground is soft. This earthquake was not as serious as an earthquake that hit in Plattsburgh, NY in April 2002 with a magnitude of 5.3! To put it in perspective, the Plattsburgh earthquake had 32 times more energy than the one that struck New Jersey today. As for the eclipse, this is something most of us should be looking forward to! While there are many faults in New Jersey, the best known is the Ramapo Fault, which runs northeast-southwest in North Jersey. The majority of New Jersey's quakes occurred around this fault area.
I was in a 7.6 in yucca valley California, they are terrifying
Great logical revelations from the seismologist. Well done Audrey in getting the interview!
As a californian, tip for ya, dont put anything heavy higher than your head at sitting level. No glass too high up, and nothing heavy. Thats all. Oh and, typically. Step outisde and get near your vehicle. Dont stay inside incase the building falls over. Grab pets and kids and get near your car, until its over.
Edit: i guess some people would rather stand in a stairwell and have the building collapses then wait to see if they can get rescued as if there aren't cases of survivors trapped and rescuers are unable to reach them which is more common than not. Darwinsm at its finest. Getting to a car can help you get to a safe place away from buildings much faster than running
This isnt east coast normal, but yeah, no shelves or frames directly above the headboard area of your bed. Plan if all that to potentially fall on your sleeping face.
@@bartsimpsonsimpson3367well, actually the East Coast has 2.0 quakes but we just don't know about it.
The getting outside to your car thing doesn’t make sense for a densely packed city like NYC where most people live and work in high rise buildings. Even in the mid rise buildings. There would be chaos if everyone tried to escape through the stairs during an earthquake. And many New Yorkers don’t drive anyway. This tip is best for other east coast cities where people own cars and live or work in smaller buildings. Although honestly I know of people who live in such large apartment buildings in small cities that it takes them 15 minutes to reach their lobby due to long winding hallways. It’s best to just find the most solid part of the office or apartment and ride it out.
But if anyone lives in a masonry mid rise building, they’d better make a run for it! That thing will definitely topple over!
Yes that Bed head board 4 ft tall with the book shelves on it with 70 bocks on it is a great example!😅😅😅😅
@@SL-lz9jr I would never live in a high rise for the simple fact it's a death trap unless you're talking about a tsunami or flood
God bless Arthur and all the good soulies. ❤❤❤
..old unreinforced masonry buildings..do poorly in EQs..
Yup…. You hardly find those in CA. East Coast got plenty of them
a bunch of buildings have been crumbling without earthquakes, imagine if we get one even a bit bigger than the last one?
@@pattiannepascual ..plenty of spare bricks!
Earthquakes were not in NY but NJ. NY trying to take the credit again.
Lol
The epicenter was in NJ but that doesn't mean other states that felt it too don't deserve credit.
As usual. F NYC
exactly. the mainstream news needs viewers, will lie, steep as low as can be, make stuff up, fear monger, whatever,to get views and money.
NJ might as well be considered NY (vice versa); they confuse our accents, we share sports teams, weather and other unforeseen events. P.S. TAKE the Nets BACK!!! We do not want credit for them.
Extremely interesting , thanks for report . We usually have very sharp jolts and not so much shallow rolling in California
New York DID NOT HAVE AN EARTHQUAKE! NEW JERSEY DID!!!!
Hey dimbo, the vibrations are felt all over. An earthquake doesn’t just happen in one tiny spot, it resonates all around. The EARTH quakes, we all feel it. Learn some fkn science before commenting.
I thought they did a pretty good job of saying NY felt a quake but it wasn’t the epicenter of it.
You have a cartoonish brain. The EARTH shook. Do you understand how large the earth is? learn some science before commenting.
now you know why you failed basic science
I don't see too much that's great about jersey
I lived there.
I wouldn't admit it publicly
Ask about and look up liquefaction...... it is very important to what an earthquake could do damagewise.
I was thinking the same. I lived in Southern California for almost fifty-six years. Ten minutes from the beach for most of it. Even with the boroughs being islands it's not sand like CA. Long Island and the Jersey coast are one thing. I lived out there for six months due to my husband having a contract with a company in NJ.
NYC is solid bedrock, not sediment
@@georgieman1910 Hi there, is Manhattan island sinking? Just asking.....
@@georgieman1910Except, you know, the sewage and subway systems...
@@RUHDD4HVN No. Is California?
The female earthquake specialist was excellent. Gave very clear explanations.
She's Dr Lucy Jones, seismologist from JPL in So. Cal.
yes and the most important part of it all was that it was a female... smh
@trevor3879 these people have collectively lost their mind
As a trump supporter i think all women have no business learning how earthquakes work. The only quakes women need to know about is quaker oats. MAKE ME SOMTHING TO EAT WOMEN!!!
Did you hear the bells ringing?
Great interview
What a great explanation !!
She did a great job explaining this for the layman
What a prof team of news reporters. ✌️💜💜
Earthquakes in diverse places Wars and rumors of wars.
Don’t forget flatulence and aroma of flatulence.
Does it not bother anyone that New York and Taiwan have explictly suffered Earthquakes within the span of the year?
You did “homework of your own!?” I thought the news media was telling us that “doing our own research” was crazy and to trust experts.
sometimes there are small earthquakes like this in california and i only notice it a little
It just started
What, nature?
It never “started” it just happens like everything else in nature. You’re gonna look mad goofy by the end of this month when nothing happens 😂
So we're not going to blame this on climate change?
It depends. Some people may not know what climate is.
They’ll blame it on the immigrants.
Meanwhile Queens had a small one in January but Manhattan gets all the publicity. Even News channels didnt mention it. Ask Alexa
The major difference is that earthquakes on the east coast. Are caused by tie upwelling of magma in the mid Atlantic ridge causing the spreading of the seafloor pushing the American plate westward. This pushes against the allegheny mountains. On the west coast, the pacific plate is rotating in a counterclockwise fashion so it is grinding against the American plate as well as the Nazca, Cuscos and having a locking ridge northeast of Los Angeles and another on the Juan De Fuco plate with these transverse motions, the slippage results in higher disruptions
The MidAtlantic ridge travels north to south and through Iceland where significant volcanic activity is currently occurring. This is the only location where spreading plate boundaries can be actively witnessed, although, the spreading in the Great Rift basin in Africa is slowly increasing that will result in the iIndian ocean tearing that continent apart.
God's first warning to NYC!
God Is LOVE, LOL.
The Statue of Liberty( a prostitute) was struck by lightning two days before the earthquake. I was at the beach and saw lightning strikes falling in the direction of along Island.
@@bhickman6And judges as well, don’t forget that.
That's assuming contractors and inspectors aren't cutting corners 😉 #iykykyk #NYCBuildings
I recall an earthquake many years ago when I lived in Long Island NY. Knocked stuff off my shelf. When I lived in LA I felt several over a 5 year period. But none too bad.
Good, the earth is trying to help humanity now
Wonder why this happened 3 days before a rare lunar eclipse?
😂😂😂
1) Eclipses are not rare
2) It’s not a lunar (moon) it’s a solar (sun) eclipse
3) Why is 3 days special? You’d say any number was interesting.
4) Would an earth quake during be more fun?

@RK-kn1ud In California we get hurricane-force winds from the Pacific and the deserts of Nevada, blizzards up in the Sierras and tornadoes -- waterspouts too -- all over the state.

With all the current and recent volcanic and seismic activity around the world, has anyone checked the state of Earth's magnetic field? Is the earth simply running through a normal cycle, or is more expected throughout the world?
If we legalize weed the fumes will stablize the magnetic kinetic forces of our core

I would think since the energy goes out over a wider area on the east coast the damage would be less in any particular area.

SSGEO predicts major earthquake at 11-13th April because of other planets influence
Apr😮 10th 🎉🎉🎉
Incredibly stupid.
"People also ask
Does planetary alignment affect earthquakes?
lp finds that since 780 Be only one of the 125 recorded earthquakes with in- tensities corresponding to 6 on the Richter scale coincided with a helio- centric planetary alignment, this one occurring in 1624 AD.
Since 1000 AD none of the eleven earthquakes with intensities of 8 has coincided."

@@dswysong7353 does a good job predicting I rest my case u can troll someone else
This is very scary to me. Just by the thicknesses of the bedrock of New York.
Are those faultlines related to or are the quakes related to the subterranian tunnel systems within those US regions?
New York has been getting hit from left to right with EVERYTHING!
There once was a great continent called At, uh Atlan, wait America. It split in half at a river that ran through it. One side fell into the Pacific ocean. One side fell into Atlantic!

ITS THE GEOLOGY OF THE GROUND IN NEW YORK AND SURROUNDING AREAD. .THERE IS ALOT OF BED ROCK. .SO VIBRATION WILL TRAVEL... SHAKE SPREAS IN A FURTHER MILE RADIUS .THAT WOULDNT BE FELT IN CALIFORNIA .ON THAT 4.8 ...A 5.5 OR HIGHER IS FOUNDATION PROBLEMS ON HOMES AND BUILDINGS .AND CAN BE A DANGER ANY PLACE..
There are two types of earthquakes, a roller and a shaker. The tiny small earthquake in NYC is nothing but boy they make it into something!😅😅😅

It's untrue that earthquakes can't be predicted. Start accounting for solar activity.
Liquifaction in Manhattan will level it. Just saying. Lot of water there.
