    It's crazy because a 4.5 in Cali feels like wait was that an earthquake? Can anyone from New York actually imagine what just happened in Taiwan?

    • @rickyagnew
      @rickyagnew Місяць тому +7

      I'm someone who lives in New York State. Unlike California it's rare to have a earthquake here. The majority of buildings here, are not earthquake proofed! I live in the northeastern part of New York State, just minutes from Canada and Vermont. In the 58 years that I have lived here, we experienced 1 5.3 earthquake. So some people might get a little freaked out when it happens here. Because California gets them all the time, you are use to them! I'm pretty confident in saying that, if it's your very first time feeling a quake anyone would likely be nervous about it!

      4.3 in kansas before, exactly....
      Was that an earthquake?
      Mainly because it's abnormal here.
      I think our faults and the limestone beds shields our buildings some, the ground is more "mushy"

    • @rickyagnew
      @rickyagnew Місяць тому

      @@carriecree1789 Yes same as California the ground is soft. This earthquake was not as serious as an earthquake that hit in Plattsburgh, NY in April 2002 with a magnitude of 5.3! To put it in perspective, the Plattsburgh earthquake had 32 times more energy than the one that struck New Jersey today. As for the eclipse, this is something most of us should be looking forward to! While there are many faults in New Jersey, the best known is the Ramapo Fault, which runs northeast-southwest in North Jersey. The majority of New Jersey's quakes occurred around this fault area.

    As a californian, tip for ya, dont put anything heavy higher than your head at sitting level. No glass too high up, and nothing heavy. Thats all. Oh and, typically. Step outisde and get near your vehicle. Dont stay inside incase the building falls over. Grab pets and kids and get near your car, until its over.
    Edit: i guess some people would rather stand in a stairwell and have the building collapses then wait to see if they can get rescued as if there aren't cases of survivors trapped and rescuers are unable to reach them which is more common than not. Darwinsm at its finest. Getting to a car can help you get to a safe place away from buildings much faster than running

      The getting outside to your car thing doesn’t make sense for a densely packed city like NYC where most people live and work in high rise buildings. Even in the mid rise buildings. There would be chaos if everyone tried to escape through the stairs during an earthquake. And many New Yorkers don’t drive anyway. This tip is best for other east coast cities where people own cars and live or work in smaller buildings. Although honestly I know of people who live in such large apartment buildings in small cities that it takes them 15 minutes to reach their lobby due to long winding hallways. It’s best to just find the most solid part of the office or apartment and ride it out.
      But if anyone lives in a masonry mid rise building, they’d better make a run for it! That thing will definitely topple over!

    The major difference is that earthquakes on the east coast. Are caused by tie upwelling of magma in the mid Atlantic ridge causing the spreading of the seafloor pushing the American plate westward. This pushes against the allegheny mountains. On the west coast, the pacific plate is rotating in a counterclockwise fashion so it is grinding against the American plate as well as the Nazca, Cuscos and having a locking ridge northeast of Los Angeles and another on the Juan De Fuco plate with these transverse motions, the slippage results in higher disruptions
    The MidAtlantic ridge travels north to south and through Iceland where significant volcanic activity is currently occurring. This is the only location where spreading plate boundaries can be actively witnessed, although,the spreading in the Great Rift basin in Africa is slowly increasing that will result in the iIndian ocean tearing that continent apart.

Some have been really large. I was even in one in Acapulco in a high-rise hotel on the beach. What you experienced in NJ is nothing.
