An old tutorial, but still useful!
For anyone curious about what DBC stands for: it's DataBase of Content. In the Sims 3 game files, merged content has the file ending .dbc. But it is basically the same as a package, just with a different name that indicates that it contains several merged files in one. We "regular" users usually stick with naming our merged files as .package too because this is what our resource.cfg is usually configured to read!
Some info on how s3pe works in the Import as dbc mode vs the regular import as package mode:
When s3pe creates a DBC file, it automatically removes redundant files such as the Sims 3 Launcher XML, which is not needed when installing Custom Content as a package anyway but is a leftover from the conversion from Sims3pack to package format. This saves some additional space, thus you should use the .dbc method for merging your packages.

Glad I found this video. My S3 game has been getting worse with the lagging until recently it jumped ship to horrible ... cas was a super sluggish nightmare... game loads and saves were also very long... I dwldd s3pe and followed your video and Voila! I have been playing the fastest loading, saving, cas'ing game in a very long time... Thank You MUCH! :-)
I find that grouping the hairs especially under the retexturer rather than hair creator easier, since its more easily identifiable in CAS the retexturer of the hair you wish to remove. Then when you're out of game, you can narrow it down by retexturer, rather than by name or original creator of the hair :)

Girl I LOVE YOU. I have just merged 5 times and my game is so much faster. It usually loads about 20mins til i can play with it really slow and now it was less than 10 mins and the game is so smooth🙏🏻💕.

I did this. But when I opened a save file, the cc that I merged had gone. For example: my sim's hair style was gone from her head, but was still in cas so I just needed to put it on again. However this became quite frustrating when it came to furniture and makeup because I couldn't rmember which I had used and some things were just gone like I had delteted them?
I'm so confused because no one else has commented about this.

Thank you so much for making this video! I've been playing the Sims for the longest time with huge lagging, even though I have a high performing PC. I tried everything but nothing worked. Right after I merged all my files, barely any lag and CAS loads so much faster!

Beyond a life saver. I have an older PC and once my mods folder hit 3GB it would have lag spikes this helped so much.
Well, thanks to this video I finally gave in and am converting my stuf to packages and merging. You're right, it improves performance so much. I've merged all clothing, hair, accessories and poses. I left patterns and worlds alone, as suggested. That left me with questions: 1. Can/should I convert and merge lots? 2. Can/should I convert and merge downloaded sims? 3. Can/should I convert and merge furniture and other build/buy items? Thanks for a great video. I know it's kind of late to be expecting an answer on an old video, but maybe some other explorer out there can help.

Yes! I do it all the time, mostly because I don't like Sims3packs. Here's the tutorial that I followed: sims3.crinrict.com/en/2011/03/tutorial-sims3packs-to-packages.html If you need more help or info, I suggest Googling. There's a bunch of tutorials out there! ♥

You made my life much easier! Unfortunately, I already deleted two days ago all of my CC (I HAD ABOUT 1000, so it's... I think many), but who carez? Maybe it will be funny to download them once again and have them organized? ^^

No problem! I'm glad the tutorial was helpful! Yes, you can definitely delete the unmerged files, but I would highly recommend that you don't so that if you want to remove like one or two things from the merged file, then you'd have all the rest of your files there instead of having to go in & re-downloading every single CC that you want. I'm not sure if that makes sense or not, but let me know if you need anymore help! ♥

Another problem that came up with my pc though was that I accidentally changed the program that open the .package files and now they have the Internet Explorer icon instead of the usual white one. I tried absolutely everything and what I found out was that I needed to change it so that .package files open with no program at all but I just can't get that to work. I really don't mean to bother you with anything else but this got me so frustrated I was about to cry
I'm so sorry! That sounds like it must be really frustrating. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to fix it exactly. Have you tried right clicking on the file & choosing the Open With... option? That's the only way I'd know how to fix it without Googling. I hope you can get it fixed! ♥

I don't have any folder called Mods or Custom content so I'm completely unable to follow along with these instructions, unfortunately.
I did this with the 67 cars I got from Fresh Prince Creations. Game performance is night and day, even though the merged file is close to 300 mb.
It really does make a difference! ♥

This post is super old, but if your still watching it, I wonder if you could be convinced to host your packages on something like google drive so lazy people like me can get them. Finding and downloading content for this game is super overwhelming, I don't even know where to start.
Looks like you've organized it in such a way that the original creators get credit for their work, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I know there’s somewhere in my computer, but they’re just not found where they used to be found and I don’t know how to load them back in without origin or with SC 32 or whatever you wanna call it has anybody had any luck dealing with this?

I merged my cc into hair, clothes, makeup, furniture, patterns etc and not all my cc show up! My package files are really big but it still should show up I thought?
One more question.. how do you know how the file looks when you delete it out of your game? For example..clothing or hair. Do you google the name of it & decide if you want to delete it?
I rename everything I download to the creator’s name first, then the name that they titled it from the download source. That way I know I can always Google it & find it. In the past I’ve also saved the image and renamed them to match the name of the item. I also now have a Google Sheet where I save the link to every item I download.

Yes and yes and yes! It’ll help your game SO much! Less files for the game to register and read allows for less lag. It won’t make it 100% perfect, but should make it more playable ☺️
Hey, Brittany, how do you download cc from Newsa because every time I try and download it, it says I need to make an account, so I make an account and try download it, but it still says I need to have an account, Also, I love the hair Loena by Newsa, but they took it down (it's the hair Chantilly had from ep 1-8) do you know where to find it?

yeah just make one, your package files won't work if you don't put it in a 'mods' folder

this helped a lot!! question though...after you've merged your files do you delete the rest of the packages out of the folder or just let them stay in there with the merged file?
I keep my merged files & the original package files separate. But I do save the original package files just in case, but I keep them out of my Mods folder. Hopefully this makes sense! Let me know if you have any more questions! ♥

Hello! I'm super late to the party, just started playing the Sims 3. I have two main questions pertaining to the video. Can you merge store package files? I recently download some store content packages from a Tumblr account and i was wondering if those could be safely merged as well? And then, you said you don't merge mods, defaults and cabinets. Why no cabinets? Does that cause issues?
Can anyone help me? I spent about 3 hours merging my cc only to boot up my game and have absolutely nothing recognized, as if my game was cc-free.
Chandler Patrick you have to make the resource file recognize dbc. and you need to install firework for that. i recommend saving it as a package instead it's easier but longer to merge
Make sure each package is no more than 1GB n size

Can you for example merge files together that don't have the same type... Hair+clothes..?
If I wanted to delete something from it, I would have to delete the merged file, and then delete the single thing from my back-up and then make a new merged file from it, is that right? 😌❤️
Yes, or you could unmerge it, which is a more difficult process

Once I merged all of my CC, I still had the original .package files. Can I delete those alongside the merged package or do I keep them and put them somewhere else?
It’s totally up to you. I personally have an unmerged folder that has all the single .package files and then keep all my merged ones in the actual Mods folder. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but I’ve found that system to be really easy. Plus if I want to add CC or remove, I can easily merge the single .package files into a new merged file.

hm.. I have a doubt, maybe you can help me with this. I'm merging my packages, and I selected 480mb of packages to merge, but when it finishes merging it turns into a 200mb package. Is that possible?
All my cc including my sims 4 package somehow became sim 3 packages how do I fix this
When you install S3PE you get an option to associate the ".package" file extension with the program which is what The Sims 4 uses as well. Thus ALL ".package" files, whether they be for The Sims 3 or The Sims 4 will be associated with S3PE and Windows will identify them as a Sims 3 Package type from the association; hopefully that helps unless it's another issue entirely.
I love your video, very descriptive. I am having issues importing. I opened s3pe, but when I clicked on the import and dbc when I went into my folders none of my packages were there. I then opened file explorer, and all of my stuff was there, but when I opened it with s3pe it wasn't. Has this happened to you? Do you know how to fix this? My game got frozen last night, and I am trying to make my game run faster. Hoping that I will still be able to merge my cc.
Merging can be so frustrating at times. I haven’t had this issue before, but have you checked that the files you’re trying to import are .package files? That’s the only type of files that can be merged through this process. I hope you can get it figured out! ☺️
1//All of your clothing and CC is in .package... does that make sense? I mean when I merge all of my CC items together, will they appear in the .package format??
2//Instead of using your "Downloads" folder for placing your CC, do you place it to the "Mods" one and from there you create little folders for organising everything? -just asking to fully understand the vid- thnxx❤️
For the merging to work properly, your CC will already need to be in .package form. It doesn't work with Sims3packs. But after you merge the files, then it compresses all of your .packages into one .package file. And I have two copies of my CC. The unmerged files are in a separate folder all organized by what they are. Then when I merge the files together, I save them into my Mods folder that's within the game. They're not in folders or anything because it's just the singular merged files. Hopefully that helps you out a bit! ♥

CC magic puts all tpyes of CC both package and sims3pack into a few packages when you ru nthe game. But alot of people ahev trouble getting ti to work anymore, but ti does it automatically if iyou get it to wor.

Haha oh no! If I start out organized, I tend to stay organized lol. But what also helps is going through my folder every month or so & just cleaning & re-organizing it.

I have the same problem as @Cocodes . I've downloaded the most recent version of S3PE but it keeps saying "There is an older version installed, would you like to remove it?" No matter how many times I go through the process, nothing changes.
Okay, so I followed the steps and merged all my hair packages. But now my "thesims3-mods-packages-cc-hair" file has all the package files still there with an additional package file named "Hair1" which is what I named the supposed merged file. Did something go wrong? It seems all it did was add another package to the long list of hairs in my Mods folder. :/

Yay!! Your game will be forever change & you'll never be able to not merge files! haha Yeah, anything that alters your gameplay dramatically like career's & food & such I wouldn't merge because it can cause some problems ♥

uninstall and it redownload it. make sure keep it in it's original file, if you take it out or make a copy it wont work. For that just create a shortcut
I began merging my package files (hair that are altogether 1.02GB big, so obviously I divided them into 6 sections - each one consisting of 20 package files that are smaller than 200MB together) and the funny thing was that once merged they were even bigger than before, for instance the first 20 packages were 180MB big and after merging became 212MB big, is anyone else having the same problem or is it just me? I checked few times with the video and I am 100% sure that I did everything correctly. Thanks for responding in advance (really anyone)
It's not so much about the size, but the amount of packages. The game loads them all individually, so the process of having to recognize multiple files (no matter their size) takes more processing power than one singular file. Plus, 40MB larger really isn't that much at all!
Thanks for responding. Yeah, you're right. As long as my game loads faster it's not a problem at all. And I noticed a slight speed up, which is great.
So I followed your video to a T my game loads smoothly and everything is faster than before but I have a slight problem and I don’t know if anyone has had this before where I converted and merged patterns but now when I try to enter create a pattern it gets stuck on “materializing materials” if anyone has had this problem and fixed it please please please let me know, I’m in the process of moving all my patterns which I detected through Delphys dashboard but i don’t know if it will help

I keep a folder with everything unmerged so I can always add or delete something. And all my merged files stay in my Downloads folder so I can overwrite them with the new CC being merged.

You can merge them however you'd like! The actual contents don't matter (besides counters & mods) ♥
Hi! I have a question I did everything and then I get a package file called (what I named it) with the merged cc and stuff but then all the cc is still in a line but is it supposed to be a folder? Plz help
I know I'm a bit late, but you can go ahead and put those files into a backup folder, just in case you want to delete something later, or want to add to that merged file. All you need in that folder (in your game) is the completely merged file. :) Hope that helped.

Hi. I know this is a pretty old video but I just got a new computer and it has Windows 10 so S3PE doesn't run anymore. I click on it and nothing happens. My old computer was Windows 8. Is there anything I can do to fix that or will it just not work on Windows 10? Is there a substitute I can use for S3PE?
Nevermind I figured it out. I took the launcher out of it's file but apparently it has to be with all the other files. It works now. Thanks anyways!

It only works with .packages unfortunately ♥
As Brittany said, it does only work with .package files, however you can use another program to make sims3 packs into .packages It's called the Sims 3 Multi Installer, and it's very easy to use. Just look up a tutorial and you're set :) Hope this helped.

When I finally select all of my custom content, first of all, it was under “DBPF packages” and there was nothing there, but when I selected “all files” they popped up. Then when I clicked open it said like it couldn’t open the package💀

OMG it helped so much!! All of the lag is gone in my game and it takes less then 5 mins to load. One question, Where do you get your amazing Patterns? I've been looking all over and can't find them.
so if my CC is in downloads under EA and they're not organized into files can I still merge them like this and do they all have to be package files or can they be Sims 3 pack files? sorry I'm very slow😅

What about content that is installed as store content? I have a lot of vehicles downloaded and they count as being from the sims 3 store even though they aren’t. Would I have to redownload them as package files? Also, if you remove CC that your sim is using and then, reinstall it as a combined package, will your sim still have it or will you have to give it to them again? (In my case, vehicles that they are using)

When you merge the cc together do you delete the separated cc?
That’s a personal choice, but I prefer keeping a separate folder with all the unmerged files. That way if I need to delete or add something, I have everything there to remerge it.
