Thanks Matt and Connie for providing a world of hands-on information...under actual field conditions.

You're right about field conditions - if you really want to know how good a unit/coil combination is, hit an old drive-in and try pulling anything out!

    That's one sweet detector.

It's a very good "old school" (you can manual-analog boost the coil vs everything auto-digital) type unit since the technology is now 20 years old (the one Connie hunts with is 18). White's keeps updating it since they're so popular.

Hi friend love your video. Looks like in the relic mode the regular pull tabs come in as buttons, gold rings as bullets. I have a few questions... What other common trash or coin items will also come in as "bullets" in the relic mode that you will have to also dig to find the gold rings? bottle caps? pennies? or what do they come in as buttons as well?) what do pull tabs, balls of foil, and beaver tail pull tabs come in as? will this trick work in heavy iron filled parks? How much depth can there be for this machine to identify gold rings with accuracy? thanks friend.

SS: your question is difficult on these MXT's due to all the variables: depth of ID depends on the coil size and the power to the coil (gain) add to the mix SAT (how fast it snaps back to a steady threshold after passing over a target) and for trashed out areas - I'm only using the "Shooter DD" (about 4" MOL). All these except the coil size is variable. For gold rings (that's what we want) and for whatever power or sat or coil size when it comes to relic mode I'm simply doing what you say (looking for bullets). Then I flip to prospecting mode (is the target 25% or lower (good chance of non-iron), then I go to coin and jewelry and check the VDI (16-40?) and of course I'm listening (steady target or scratchy). I've dug them at 8" with that coil but I had the gain turned up all the way in a non-trash area of a park. I guess you use these (White's stuff in general) to have the most control of your coil (power to it). Not everyone's cup of tea for sure.

@@mattmattsongold So true. How many gold rings have you found this way, and how long have you used this method? Do any of White's other detector's have this ability?White's MX sport has a relic mode, is it the same technology? can you do this trick with the Sport? Are there any other common targets that will come up as "bullets"

@@silversniper716 : found so many I won't talk about it - 20 years with it, now the wife is using the original and I use the MXT "pro" - same thing with tones. Yes - bullets can fool you, give a solid tone - and you'll go through a lot of those because they give the same sound you're looking for. We've found so many I've cast over 15 lb. of it for fishing! If you're getting fooled some that's not a bad thing - you won't miss a ring. We've retired now, so I don't keep up with detectors as much as I used to - simply use the ones we know. Any of the Whites stuff that has knobs - MXT, GMT etc. you can control this way. The newer digital machines I'm not familiar with - we've pretty much got what we need and understand to do what we do at this point. If you've got the money - I understand the Spectrum is the cats meow in Europe for old gold and silver. Good luck finding a machine that fits you perfectly!

@@mattmattsongold well i live in canada, so not really any bullets to find here haha. How about the old style pull tabs like the beaver tail ones, and the other older types? Do they come in as buttons as well? Hopefully they don't come in as bullets.

@@silversniper716 Went out this morning to refresh my memory and make sure the numbers were correct since it seems you're looking to make a purchase (I don't rah rah for anyone's equipment - they're just tools to me):
Coin Jewelry Mode: Bevertail pull tab: VDI: 26 IND: 5¢ Ring
Relic Mode: VDI: 26 IND: Button
Prospecting VDI: 26 IND: Iron Probability: 10% Ground 51% (mid mineralization)
      1964 Nickel:
CJ Mode: VDI 20 IND: 5¢ Ring
      Relic: VDI 20 IND: Button
      Prosp: VDI 20 IND: 10% 51%
      Woman's Wedding Band:
CJ Mode: VDI 12 IND: Foil Ring
      Relic: VDI 12 IND: Button
      Prosp: VDI 12 IND: 10% 51%
      Man's Wedding Band:
CJ Mode: VDI: 22 IND: 5¢ Ring
      Relic: VDI: 22 Button
      Prosp: VDI: 22 10% 51%
One more thing I showed: if you put the discriminator to max it hunts silver (only) & (early) copper pennies only. You will get no trash - but also no gold - just old coins. If you're looking to buy - this is probably the last for the MXT - they've taken that about as far as it can go I think. After all, it's been around now for 20 years. Happy hunting!

Very Very Informative video! Thank you Matt! I have had an MXT Tracker E series for a few years now and didn't really know how to set it for different situations so i purchased a Garrett ACE 250 and spend most of my time using it. I believe i will have to get out the MXT and really learn how to use it.

    • @mattmattsongold
      @mattmattsongold  6 років тому

Glad it helped! Nothing wrong at all with using that ACE 250 either (I use the Garrett Pro as well) its ease of use, light, discriminate out (or in) at the touch of a button, and low cost are all admirable features that make them an excellent "keep in the truck" type unit. On the MXT - if you get that small coil I'm using, it really makes it a different unit (and much more useful) as does the sniper coil with the 250 on that series. Happy Hunting!

In New England where I live was once the home of what was called the cheap yankee. Many pulled their money and gold out of the banks etc and hid it inside their homes. In the 1980s when these yankees began dying of old age the state would find safes full of antique money and gold. I wonder if they checked the basement floors with metal detectors? I would.
