Matt it's wonderful that you are doing this to help any and all people with an interest in prospecting.
Thanks for your generous assistance.
Appreciate that. Since the stroke and Gene's death (my training partner) I have wanted to get this out. We both got a wake up call on how quickly things can change . . .
@@mattmattsongold Thank you, god bless you. Maybe its in the future intresting for me.
@@mattmattsongold i'm living in Europe, so i can not see maps like they did in USA..... but maybe i can see in future the layout from teh mountains here like you explained.
@@hdj81Vlimited : I hope so - and I also hope you do well!
Great informative video.
Going to watch it again maybe 3 or 4 times so I can soak up this knowledge.
Thank You for the video.
I have been subscribed to you for a few years and enjoy all your videos.
Mike
Thanks Mike - Connie and I really appreciate your support.
Another fine bit of info! It all adds up!
Yep - it sure does! Man am I glad to actually see your post . . . maybe something good worked out.
Thanks for doing this video. Many Prospectors will find it very useful. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Chuck - a very happy new year to you and yours!
Thank-you for sharing this knowledge with us. Looking forward to the next one! Ed
Your welcome.
Fantastic lesson Matt!!! Thank you so much, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next one!
Can't say it will be out shortly, but we're now working on it!
Thank you Mr. Mattson. Your videos have very much so changed my life. I am a dedicated student researching and developing on your methods in california, originally from NC, Ga. I fing gold and cut gems every day thanks to your unyielding guidance. Looking forward to your next video. - Rod
Glad you are out there and doing. Very best of luck with your future endeavors in the field.
Wunderbar
Thank you. I am a truck driver and I have travelled the entire country through and through, many times over... About 5 years ago, in Colorado, when I was shining my flashlight into a river, I saw sparkles everywhere. That was it. I was knee deep in freezing water and in about 15 min I'd struck it rich. I was doing backflips. I'd found a huge nuggett...Over the next few days, as I made my way to Montana to deliver, I stopped at every river in between and ended up in a canyon in the middle of nowhere. I was filthy rich! I had buckets of gold and was in a gold fevered crazed binder......lol! Yeah well, when I tried cashing in on my new fortune and was laughed at, I was advised that fools gold wasn't just a catch phrase... I was devastated. lol. Anyway, over the years I've learned some things. I go places and spend my days off in the most desolate places imaginable. I passionately enjoy doing this and though my foolish tactics have given me wonderful experiences, they have not rendered much in the way of gold. And thats ok. But it's time for a change. The knowldge you are sharing is what I have been missing. So anyway, what would you suggest if I wanted to do this as a living now? So I could give all of my attention to it...And, with new insight, I have a good feeling about some areas I've been investigating. I've been wondering about the glacial gold in the North Eastern part of the country. So, the old ancient river beds that have rerouted over the ages and are now just pastures - what do you think about digging there? Do you think it would be worth checking into these areas?
Yes - those areas would be worth checking, you could take core samples easily and cost effectively. As for making a living - I've seen a dredge sluice box turn pure gold 7 times in my life, and on 4 of those occasions it was my own. This group of videos is teaching what it takes to do that kind of thing - track down the place to make a life changing score. Good luck out there - much better odds with this than the lottery.
Love watching and learning what you say Matt !!! ❤❤
Thanks for that E - I really appreciate you staying with us all these years and your kind comments.
I was such a gold and gem fanatic my whole life that i finally opened a jewelry store in my 30s located in NYC area. I am very fascinated with prospecting my own gold a refining/making my own items with my finds. I can literally maximize my profits doing this, but that is not the sole purpose. I am obssessed with nature and its treasures-- Profits are just a bonus; gotta eat!!! I appreciate this information very much. THANK YOU!!!
You are very welcome - I hope that jewelry store does well for you!

Thanks for following, we'll have another out shortly.
Fantastic! Already applying some of you prospecting ideas and heading to another location this weekend. The USGS map is AWESOME. Thank you.
Thank you Matt. Very educational. I'm in Australia, plenty of gold to be discovered here. 👍🍻
Absolutely there is - if you can make it through all that ironstone! Good luck and hope you find some of those awesome oversized nuggets.

Thank you, John - and yes, they do. At this point there are 3 times the number of people subscribing that lived in my home town (Clermont, Florida). It is a very humbling thing for a skinny little kid that nobody thought had much chance.
Thoroughly enjoyed your detailed video again Matt. As usual you are a wealth of knowledge on this and other subjects. Wish I could drop back about 30 years and do this again! (91 in June) Regards to you both. Al

Thanks for that.
Ty very much Sir.
You're welcome!
I have used a lot of usgs data and reports but I don't know how to decipher those color coded geologic maps, I hope that by watching your videos I can learn that. I am in the North Eastern United States and I am all about finding more gold and gems.
You will want to look at: USGS map color codes (do a search with those terms). There are charts you can download too - but the frustrating thing about the colors is they're suggested - not necessarily standardized across all maps. Good luck out there!
You can click on the colors and in the reports it will show the type of deposit(s). Making few notes of it will go long way
Thank you for your videos. Do you offer your whole course somewhere?
There are almost 20 years of videos on prospecting here - although some were made with 1st generation cameras and you may need a small screen to see them, they are in total the whole course. Good luck to you in your prospecting adventures!
Matt what's a inexpensive gold or coin metal detector for a beginner? Great video. I want to start metal detecting for gold or coins for the fun. I always was a rock hound. Great video class. I love gold! I can't say why. But I would love to dry pan in these desert washes. I know of some big washes that have quarts rocks everywhere. The problem is the black sand that's magnetic. looking forward to your next class.
This is probably a more complicated reply than you would expect - but inexpensive throws a curve we might not be able to solve (inexpensively). It doesn't help matters that the metal detector companies typically sell detectors with a very large coil. To the uninitiated, that big coil seems a great value, but the fact is they're practically worthless in most areas, and to get the most out of the detector requires buying another coil - so that cheap detector can get very expensive fast. There are inexpensive metal detectors that do a fine job of coin hunting (Garret Ace series) but they are below 10 KHZ (6) and throw a slow wave into the ground for depth - and they will find a gold coin sized target ($1 gold coin size back in the day was roughly a dime size today). If we're prospecting those quartz and wash areas though, we're looking for small targets, a #2 pencil eraser size would be a good chunk of gold and most are smaller, so we need more waves to "see" it. Over 13KHZ will do the job. For that a Garrett Pro (15) Whites MXT (15) or Garrett AT Gold (18) are all great choices. They come with a big coil though . . . the Whites MXT becomes an awesome nugget finder with the small "shooter" DD coil - with the Garrett's, the addition of their small sniper coils does the same. The MXT though is head and shoulders above for pure prospecting - the Garrett's are better for coins. There are others out there - just be sure you have the right mix of coil and KHZ for the job you're trying to do. Good luck in the field!
Wow, loved the intro Matt 😅
Thanks for that - whenever I go back to these I'm always amazed at how many people are still watching them. Thanks again.
@@mattmattsongold I was in southern Oregon last weekend and got my first ever picker sniping the Rogue River with West Coast Gold Prospecting & Matt from whatatrip prospecting. It was 0.98 gram nugget a real beauty. Thanks Matt
@@SECRETCREEKPROSPECTING1776 - Excellent! I had four gold claims off the Rogue 20 years ago. Brings back memories. Thanks.
@@mattmattsongold no more claims there
@@mattmattsongold I have been watching your channel for few years. Laws are so bad a person can not even enjoy what god put here for us with all the regulations. Hard to believe people allowed this to happen. Makes me really sad and bit angry 😡
Great videos, with great info. We can't seem to find your first video? We would like more info on how to find and use the NASA video. Thanks
It is probably the 3rd video you want: ua-cam.com/video/pkCbNN57los/v-deo.html Hope that helps and good luck in the field!
It would be super awesome of you, if you had time to give us a tutorial on exactly how you got the the correct map and chosen settings. And what the to look for in the color selection. I am trying to sort all this out and having an issue. Thanks for the cool info!!
That's a good idea, one I'll try to do. It would probably help you too, to know that the USGS changes (and has changed) their online maps, but whatever the maps they give, use the principles you've learned to read the ground before you ever leave the house and you'll be miles ahead of the game. Very best of luck to you and yours.
Hi Matt. Thanks for the video. I am trying to check out LR2000 but its kind of different than on your computer screen. Is there a link I can follow Please?
John, they have probably updated it - they always seem to be monkeying with that thing. I don't have another link - sorry.
I'm really enjoying this. Could you please number your videos? It makes it much easier to watch them in the correct order.
Thanks
great info...were can I find this for Colorado??
There's a link in the description, once the info comes up you can size it to whatever area you need - the sidebars on the right open detailed info for the window you're in. Good luck - excellent area to be in.
Do you know of any deposits in the appalachian mountain range of upper east TN? Any info would be very helpful . Thank you.
I don't, but you can certainly use the USGS tools in the series to search for deposits there (or anywhere for that matter) and do some testing if you find N/S gold indicators crossed by E/W rivers. I simply didn't get to research Tennessee in my career. Good luck!
Lookin' good you squirrely capitalist:)
Careful - the socialists are everywhere . . .
Edward E. Anderson gotta agree.
Genius
There's an acronym for that though I can't remember it at the moment - but I do remember the one for "expert" - EX = has been Spurt = a drip under pressure . . . Thanks though - I do appreciate your commenting and good luck in the field if you're going for gold and gems!
There's diamond-bearing rock somewhere in the Klamath Mountains (and in the Sierra Nevada, even more) -- I just can't figure out if there are lamprophyric diatremes (pretty sure there's no kimberlite) sampling upper-mantle diamonds that have somehow formed in an usual spot owing to subduction processes -- or if the diamonds are eroding out of ophiolites ... talking about slabs of oceanic upper-mantle that got _obducted_ up onto the NA continent. But the literature suggests that ophiolitic peridotite contains only _micro_-diamonds, and good-sized diamonds have been found by gold placer miners.
So I think there must be some crypto-volcanoes in or near the Sierra and Klamath. I don't know, maybe they are smaller than the big, commercial kimberlite pipes, and so have been missed.
Ultramafic rock, chromite, a good amount of platinum group metals -- these conditions characterize diamond areas along the Pacific Coast of NA.
You are quite correct on the Klamath Mountains - I was present when 2 diamonds were found in the Klamath River as the result of dredging (panning their tailings - dredges don't catch them well, a grease plate does). Thanks for your well written post.
@@mattmattsongold - Thanks.
I was pleased to recently find this series of video lectures, packed with great, practical information. Very useful, as I've only recently taken an interest in geology, which quickly turned into an interest in gold, platinum, and gems. :-)
How many hundreds of diamonds (and probably platinum nuggets) do you suppose the Klamath Mountains Old Timers tossed away with a shrug back in the day?
When I first learned about diamonds having been found by gold miners in the Klamaths, I assumed some economic geologists must have figured out exactly what rock they're coming out of -- but as far as I can tell, that doesn't seem to be the case. It's an interesting mystery.
Would sure be cool to be walking along a logging road in N. California or S. Oregon, and see diamonds eroding out of a road cut-exposed lamprophyre dike. :-)
You know -- warning: wild-arsed conjecture -- I've never heard of diamonds in the Oregon Coast range, but because there were never any major gold strikes there (being _mostly_ a big pile of basalt and siltstone/sandstone), not many people were ever poking around in the gravels -- and it's only been relatively recently that people think much about the possibility of macro-diamonds away from the old cratonic lithosphere.
There aren't any ophiolites in the OCR that I know of, but there are plentiful camptonite lamprophyre and nepheline syenite dikes. _Perhaps_ these post-accretion intrusions could have transported subduction diamonds -- which may have been especially preserved at depth when the Siletzia terrane accreted and jammed up the subduction of the Farralon plate, stopping further subduction under the NA plate (and terminating Rocky Mountains uplift).
Hmm. Maybe worth a look in the gravels of the Siletz and maybe Nehalem rivers, and some others -- I need to check a map. :-)
great video,, can you give help in finding the map your are working with
Wayne, start here: mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/map-us.html -- that will get you in. Finding that specific map might be hard because they change these things as often as their shorts. That said, just remember to zoom into an area until you start seeing purple and pinks and you're pretty much in the right direction. Good luck!
Jesse James Strickling pointed me to this Gold ⚡
Thanks for letting us know. Good luck out there.
wow
Matt, I need help. In alabama have unlimited access to one of the biggest strikes in alabama. I'm trying to find someone to talk to and seek advise. Tested ground . Everywhere is at least 5-8 colors. Top 2 '. No bedrock showing.
Jason, you can email us: mattmattson57@gmail.com but it sounds like you have done the preliminaries and simply need to work it. Good luck!!!
I watched the Goldie video, and now I want Connie and Goldie to do a video on dowsing.
what is that web site with the map for gemstones and gold i would like to know more thank you for your time
Start here: mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/ Best of success to you.
I've went to the usgs website and installed the file in Google earth but when I click for info I don't get the same report that you show. Can you help?
I'm afraid I can't, since I don't install any file (I'm using Apple OSX) - perhaps someone else reading this can. You might try a "backdoor" in, by using a search (Bing - whatever) for > Georgia (or pick a state) USGS mineral map < and from there try to navigate to what you want. One of those images will be live (was for me). Hopefully that will get you in. Good luck!
Suscribed! This is facinating! How do I get the state lines to show up and other details like roads?
There is a sidebar (or was if they haven't changed the map query page) to the right that will have the overlays and a slider bar that will put more or less detail on the page as you wish. Good luck!
matt are you still available to speak to ive been trying to find your web sight and it will not let me open
Lee: we closed the website when I retired and moved to Alabama. I only have the UA-cam series now.
I want to see Connie do a segment! She's cool.
Well, then you need to take the cat challenge: ua-cam.com/video/PGmq_CX7_mI/v-deo.html Her score is 6 out of 9.
You know if anything good is still found in Southern nm? I been going out with our local club but ain't fond much of nothing
That I don't know - NM is tough though, even in our time things were scattered. Persistence paid - but the central part of the state was much better. Good luck out there!
@@mattmattsongold thanks and I'm sure I'll need it lol.... looks like most everything has been picked over pretty well.... there's a woman that's found 2 2oz nuggets out there where I go but she's been detecting 10 plus years and the last one took her two days to dig out
How do you overlay your streets? So far I'm just eyeballing it from google earth, hah. God bless you!
I do later, to get a general idea of where this is - and like you, I use Google earth, and all the resources I can to get as much info as possible before I start burning gasoline.
Sorry I misread that - you wanted to know how to do it - click "layers" and there's a slide to get the detail you want. I get just enough to get zeroed in, have a second window open with Google Earth (or topo or any other type info I want) and go from there. "Layers" is the first button down from your zoom + -
Thank you so much for all of your replies on my posts today.
Matt, when speaking of 90% of the gold was gotten by the old timers - were they not referring to the gold laying right on top of the soil? We know that gold is mostly gone - right?
I think you may be right, it's an often repeated line (especially by those that don't want us looking . . .). If you turn that around to say 90% of those who look for gold won't find any at all (because it's gone) - it's ludicrous, since almost anyone that looks for gold in gold bearing areas finds some (not saying they find enough to retire, or support themselves etc. - but they'll find some).
hey that online map dosen't show gold any more and some of the quarts deposits u pointed out aren't even there
Don't be surprised if many in your government agencies don't want you looking for gold and will make it as difficult as possible by changing maps, links, road access, whatever. It's up to you to overcome whatever obstacles in your way now that you know there is gold still in mass quantity and an independent lifestyle out there. We overcame the bureaucrats of our day to do what we did in the gold fields and unfortunately you will have to as well (or be happy with a 9-5 job with all your income audited and split before you get it). I didn't say it was going to be easy - nothing worthwhile is . . . Wish you the very best of luck in the field!
I heard it the other way around that they found less than 10% of the gold if you don't learn how to find it and actully put in the work to find real amounts of gold not just flakes you won't get any
You have to put in real work to find/dig it out - that's true, and a real obstacle to most . . .
Has ANYONE actually found allot of gold by doing this?? If so I'd like to get into this field. Minerals and gold fascinate me!
Look in your appliances the Tv's computers cell phones old cars they all use gold in them
You are quite correct - especially the old ones.
I was frauded out of thousands ,and my bank robbed , I live in Tony Al , and going out tomorrow to look for something
How come you always skip over Nevada? Isn't Nevada supposed to have the most gold? I live in Henderson, NV just outside Las Vegas, NV. Is it illegal for me to look or something? Just curious why in the few videos I've watched, you never talk about and always skip around Nevada. Why?
You're in a great area - and pretty much wide open to explore for minerals as most of the old claims have long expired. We'll cover the planet in time.
Matt Mattson Thank you. Awesome info.
I have gold
Good job
