I feel like they both smoked before the interview but the interviewer isn’t a regular smoker and is mainly focused on not dying during this interview.
😂
thought the exact same thing, the end of the clip is a dead giveaway!
wouldn’t be surprised
Haha. Yessum. Spot on.
Lmao
That would be me..
Thinking " oh shit ...panic attack in 3, 2, 1 "
Totally underrated and unique guitar player.
Underrated? Deftones is like one of the largest alt-metal bands out there! Unless you mean under appreciated, which i could possibly see
He's carved his own niche. Love his style, working with textures and rhythms rather than flashy lead playing.
@@jukujuku6153 People love throwing "underrated" around without having any idea what it means
underrated overrated jesuschristrated stop
Deftones is “by far” my favorite band and Steph is a great writer and rhythm player, but he’s not underrated as a guitar player. Even Steph thinks his playing skills are trash. 😂
I've always loved Stephen's playing, but hearing how humble he is makes me like him even more.
Love Stephen Carpenter! It's like he's one of your life long homies. He just keeps it real.
Keeps it real? He believes the earth is flat
@@stevec6427 ahaahahhahaha
@@stevec6427 Even though it’s objectively wrong, it takes a lot of bravery to say something that misguided haha
fucking love Stephen......you are a legend
Legend, indeed!
*Why Stephen's one of the greatest*
His humility: "everything I love is beyond my abilities..." In that comment he says, "I'm just me" and I love him for that
love how Stephen keeps it real
He's not the most complex player but his style is very unique and that's what makes him a great player.
Steph always putting his playing down, he should know it is very expressive and it connects with so many people precisely because of that. Probably not what he wishes he could be doing but it touches the hearts of more people than cold virtuosity
I love his style of playing
I like his mindset. It seems like he never stopped being that kid playing in a garage.
I always felt Stephen is very modest yet isn't that into the music he makes .
does this guy ever age? He s been looking the same for 20 years and he s a heavy smoker.
Very true! He must have good genes :-)
cuz he heavily smokes pot
piricsi remus I'm about to say that too bro. haha
piricsi remus it's the weed man
piricsi remus its all the weed he smokes man
1:38 that laugh followed by dead silence looked so awkward for some reason
stephen is very humble. he has a simple (yet amazing) style and he knows it. never lets anyone gas him up.
Dear Stephen, please write the next deftones album.
Chino would never allow that Haha
Lol your probably right, but hell nah G.
Stephen mos def needs to get involved, last thing deftones needs is an another blan ass gore album.
Sorry, but as a deftones head since 97, the gore album was the least deftones of all deftones albums.
+Christopher Deftones. It was _the most_ ‘Deftones’-esque album, numb nuts. They are notorious for being an ever-evolving, yet enigmatic band. You should also know that what they combine genre-wise is really just an amalgam. Especially Chino Moreno, who quite possibly has the most eclectic musical interests. How have you failed to notice this ever since the early-2000’s, “‘Deftones’ ‘97 head”?
@@ADT2695 ......... Seriously?
Listen kid. This is all opinion, however.
I'm well aware of Chino Moreno's musical endeavors inside and outside deftones and likewise to the rest of the homies in the band from personal experience back when Chi was around, even before one of my older bands and I had the honour in opening up for them a few times.
"Ever evolving, yet enigmatic band" Yup, it was at that moment I knew I was being ranted by an Einstein... In that respect, yeah, no shit right, thats deftones and the members individualy for that matter, painfully naive of you to mention....
Not so surprised on your judgement though, after all you uploaded a bullet for my valentine video on your account dawg.... That second hand embarrassment, you did that to yourself vato 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
" Gore. most 'deftones'-esque album".......... dawg..... That's not even a funny insult to the deftones or to Chino's capabilities. And that is FACT.
Get familiar with team sleep, like linus, eros demos; buffalo, Saturday night wrist demos as well as their hidden material/discography since 88 up until now.
You know, kind of like what glassjaw did. If, you know what I mean...
But hey, at least you have a passion for deftones, and that's all that really matters.
I think you might be able to understand all this.
+Christopher Deftones,
Understand that just because you’ve experienced something personally with them and that you have anecdotal information, does not at all mean that you’ve refuted anything that I said. E.g. the fact that I uploaded (re-uploaded) a video in 2008 (from 2006 or ‘07) when in middle school, regarding ‘Bullet for My Valentine’. Or, that fact that you pointlessly examined my ‘UA-cam’ channel to produce defaming words, like calling me “kid”. You’d have to know that none of it matters. Come on...
Carrying on past that preface, my range of musical tastes is something that expands far beyond just ‘Deftones’; bands that spectrally begin with very dissonant and experimental groups like ‘Swans’, ‘Neurosis’, ‘Botch’ et al. to more world-popular music groups ‘Depeche Mode’, ‘Alice in Chains’, ‘Chevelle’ et al. The commonalities are that - most of - these bands can be appreciated for some facet of their work. If you’re truly, closely listening, it’s composition and instrumentation. Even though I don’t play any instruments, the way in which I listen to music is in the same tense as an instrumentalist and/or songwriter themselves. Yes, I know of ‘Eros’, the album, and listen to 2 of his 3 bands, ‘Crosses’ and ‘Palms’. And yes, I have no issue with the admission of liking ‘Bullet for My Valentine’ for specific reasons, past or present.
‘Deftones’ were actually the impetus for venturing towards many of the critically-lauded, obscure groups. So, kind of, with that being said their musical path taken has been completely germane and corresponds with what Chino Moreno’s musical taste’s, as well as Stephen Carpenter’s, - and most likely - Sergio Vega’s (I listened to ‘Quicksand’ before even knowing that he was the permanent replacement for Chi Cheng). This creates the amalgam I was talking about in my previous response. ‘Gore’ is very thematically similar and very processed with samples and modulation just like ‘Saturday Night Wrist’, but a lot more cohesive.
'I was young and dumb so...........uh hu hu....thats the way that goes...'
Steph is so baked here 😂😂😂😊
When everyone was playing 7-string, he was still playing 6-string. White Pony was recorded with 6-string. Amazing!!
Davephatbuds he got his first 7 string during the recording of White Pony and he only used it for a part on one song. I believe he said it was RX Queen in another interview if Im not mistaken.
Everyone using 7 in 2000? Really? Meshuggah, Korn, Steve vai. They are all?
@@RlotttHD Agreed. I don't feel like many bands were using them at all until metal really went hard on 7s, which was 2004-2006.
No, Steph was playing 7 strings before many others were.
@@mck7646 The first album Steph used a 7 string on was Deftones self titled, which came out in 2003. So yeah, before a lot, but several guitarists / bands had used them for several years before he did.
Seven string guitars have been around for centuries, but I don't think they really took off (in modern rock / metal) until Ibanez and Steve Vai put out the UV7 (I think that was the first). I would also give KoRn credit for making the 7 string popular, as they've been using them since their first album (1994).
I also feel Dimebag deserves a bit of credit in this department. Although he never used an actual 7 string, he was also one that showed the power of tuning low on 'The Underground in America' and 'Sandblasted Skin'. Many will lead you to believe he's in G, but it's actually closer to F#. He did this on their 1996 album 'The Great Southern Trendkill'.
At the end of the day it's not always about who did it first, but who did it well enough to connect and resonate with an audience.
TL;DR
He has that Northern California vibe to him, really shows with this interviewer if you know what im talking about hahah.
Best thing to ever come out of the city of Sacramento, DEFTONES
Much better than brother lynch hung lol
that minion tattoo though
:-D
Love the honesty from Steph. He knows the limits to his skills and operates it within those limits. I've always admired how he can do a lot with a little. Much respect.
Such an awesome guy sooo chill that colour of the ESP is amazing
Steph is the man, great riffs and great live
Great guitar player with an awesome sound. Makes you really appreciate how cool and humble he is!!
Stephen is still the same homie, gotta love him!
thats funny because i met Stephen outside of a house of blues, in an AAL concert. he was there smoking alone.
Steph's so chill. I like his live playing style, no gimmicks, just unbothered shredding
awesome thanks TC 👍
definitely one of my favorites , i love everything he plays
May 7th in Nashville, got the tickets yesterday!👈✌
aaayyyyyeeeee!!!!🙌 You keep me motivated 💪 Yourvideos are amazing 🙌
i'm a big fan.. your work is so nice and different .. Thankyou
I hope the guys give Steph more freedom with the next record to play what he wants. I hear Gore was mostly Chino & Sergio's baby.
I know this is an old comment but I would love something like Diamond Eyes again. It's just like a catalogue of some of his best riffs lol
Thomas Pearson i dug Gore. But hell yeah, I just got on a deftones kick again and i forgot how much i loved his playing alongside Abe's drums. They should let him loose for sure
I want Steph to write more music like Korea, Dai the Flu and WGTB. Just pure dank riffs.
Odraleba Zerimar I wish Korea got more play live.
we'd have another adrenaline record, he likes what he plays now but you can tell he's bored and he enjoys 96-97 better
Great video! BTW TC production team might want to look at the weird de-noising artifacts on the voices (especially Tore's). Sounds like musical noise.
My favourite guitarist, not because of technical talent, but because he played some of the most memorable riffs and has his own style
That guitar tho. Love that color and his Ruby red one.
They be smokin, you can hear a lighter go off at 4:42 lol
And at 2:00
Definitely going to try this! Stephen throws down! I want that guitar, green glitter 8 string!?!?
I'd go for his purple. I'm not much for pink but damn, his pink one is nice to!
Shawn Thayil I really need to challenge myself and buy an 8 string
That opening riff
Amazing guitar player
I hope that little melody he's playing at the beginning makes it to their new record. It sounds freaking surreal.
His teeth are so white, damn
He uses a water pick
Regular dentist visit
Probably fake teeth
they seem fake asf
I have a huge crush on Stephen.
He's amazing :D
Tosin and Javier! Hell yeah!
my favorite band 😎💖
Idol
Such a cool, humble guy
Was that intro just a chord jam? Sounded sweet and smooth.
Dude that’s a badass guitar is there a way I can get that exact same guitar I been wanting an 8 string version ?
Would love to see them work with Robin Guthrie, killing joke and
Trey Gunn.
I have his original signature ESP SRC in see thru green
Dave Thomson how did you get that piece of awesomeness?
Favorite band is deftones but a nice shout out to Tosin n Javier from Animals As Leaders!
Please please share the band list he gave you with us !!
6:50 is the highlight! Hilarious how tuned to E based on Tosin and Javier
Wtf, Steph doesn't look like he has smoke a 10 feet long joint before the vid ahaha love that guy
That is the most rad ESP I've ever seen
Nice to hear he's trading tips with Tosin and Javier.
Step. The Master of Heavy Melodic Epic Rifffs
Steph likes AAL! When your favorite artists are friends😁.
3:54 my favourite part.
Love steph
That tele looks like its the same color as the mxr carbon copy. Rad.
What's the song he 's playing in the beginning?
John Kyro I'd like to know too!
Dude tattooed a minion on his arm.
*A fucking minion!* 😂😂😂
EPIC
what a nice guy
He kinda sounds like Mitch Headberg......love it!
*Really* wanna try a humbucker in the middle position now.
He doesn't even use it, he's been quoted as saying it's just for the aesthetic
@@alijankhan3330 well that's annoyingly pointless, and doesn't even look that good anyway. Just clutters up the design.
I do wanna know what it sounds like though.
Thats a big guitar
That cat rite there is the reason my WHOLE musical outlooked changed i was a one man acoustic tailgate country singer until i was riding to work with my cuzzin and i heard deftones adrenaline and my eyes were open n now I'm a avid 7 STRING metal player n own every Deftones albumn. FN love it
Hey Steph can you teach me how to be a swagger enough to play 8 string guitar but to never play solos at all?
SC is as DTE as they come but the dude conducting this interview should be getting carts at Costco!
I want that guitar so bad.
anyone knows what is the tuning for drop e ?
Mihai Cretan EBEADGBE
@@Creature1009 thanks man
フィリップ haha that took a while
Indeed - I just saw this interview and was going to ask that question, and then Lo, I saw yr response to Mihai. 8 strings ... man, I think I'm gonna go for it. Why not, right?
Cool guy without guitar players ego. Who the hell is interviewing him? so uncomfortable to watch.
I think more than uncomfortable, his behavior is awkward haha
Steven made some tasty riffs
what's the song in the beginning??
Not entirely sure. Maybe just a new riff Stephen was jamming!? :-/
Is that a miniom in his right arm? 😱
Yup!
Is that an 8 string guitar? I knew he played a 7 but have never noyiced if its an 8 string
He used a 9-string on Ohms
genius...
Most appreciable 4 weedz likings
Puro Los Angeles
StefTones
Have a jam bro
I found that 9 is the sweet spot. 10-string guitars exist but they don't sound right, no matter what. The 9th string's tone, when done right and at the right scale is just perfection.
8 strings Stephen keeps going but i think he will stop there unless he fills to challenge himself to for the 9th
As a Deftones fan, I love their post-metal shoegaze shit, but it would be so awesome if Chino let Steph go full blown Metal a-la *HEXAGRAM* , just ☝️ more Around the Fur 2.0. Like if u agree brotha....
Likable guy
r those his real teeth?
he's had his teeth done!
I chose this guitar genius over this super hot chick thumbnail. This better be GOODDD!!!
steev-un?
stef-un?
I always said it as stef un
Stephen really *shouldn’t* remind me of my dad in any way, but he *does* for some reason. Anyway. Thought y’all might wanna know that. Welp. See ya later! 👋🏻
Man got into meshuggah in the late 90s......interesting
I thought it said guitárist and I was jealous
yes they are both stoned ..... :V
love Steph man but the guy wasn't digging the interview at all haha wtf
Really cool.....😬
Proper awkward end hahaha
He's so baked, you can hear it.
Yep, Steph is high again...
Stoneddddddd
why does he have a minion tattoo hahahaha
