@@Cinncinnatus Business Class on RegioJet is actually priced quite reasonably. A trip from Prague to Košice would set you back €40-50, depending on the service and load factor. If you can score an empty seat opposite to you, it's almost as good as a bed, since the two seats can be pulled towards each other to create a single continuous sleeping surface.

So, wait a minute, the sleeper car 'beds' are just couchettes with a 5cm rock hard mattress stacked on top? Might as well get a couchette car then... As for travelling Prague-Kosice, I agree with you, especially for tourist travellers from outside Czechia/Slovakia, just take the day train. Business class seats are great comfort, the landscape (especially in Slovakia) is really good- so just take the day train

This "uncomfortable" bed is quite similar the "hard sleeper" in China. The bedding is thin and hard. It's 6 beds per booth. But unlike the RegioJet, hard sleeper on Chinese slow trains don't have sliding door for individual booths. And the lights of the entire coach (except at the ends) shut down at precisely 10:30pm (but you have control of the reading light). And the facilities are sometimes filthy due to the high volume of passengers. But this is how most people still travel now and how everyone traveled before bullet train era.
Soft sleeper has sliding door, 4 beds and independent light per booth.
Bullet train sleepers are pretty much renovated soft sleepers.
I hope you could come to China again and experience our slow trains too. You may not be satisfied with the train itself but you'll enjoy it if you like to chat.

also the fact that they have those "bullet trains" in China that only travels up to 160km/h(100mph) but were marketed and branded on the same level as the ones that travel at 200km/h(125mph) to 250km/h(155mph) or higher, so it's basically a money grabber and some of them smells like formaldehyde, they are sleepers tho...

    • @RD-ht6go
      @RD-ht6go 3 роки тому +1

@@timlilijinsheng4070 Wrong. There's no "bullet train" category in Chinese railway. There're G for high-speed trains on designated tracks, D for slower trains with multiple-unit bullet trains on slow train tracks, and K, T, Z and number-only for "average-speed" slow trains.
G train tracks are designed to cope with 380kph. The speed was heavily capped after the Wenzhou incident. Now the two major workhorses, CRH380 series and CR400 "Fuxin" series run at 305kph and 350kph respectively, but Fuxin may run at 305 too on certain sections in south China.
D trains are older-generation trains bought from Bombardier and Kawasaki (Shinkansen E2) runing at between 190kph and 250kph depending on tracks.
The slower ones below are towed by locomotives and are not bullet trains.
      Z trains run at 160kph
      Ttrains run at 140kph
K trains and unnumbered trains run at 120kph.
I have taken all of them so keep your false rants to yourself. And don't even think you know more about China than a real Chinese.

For me personally, the premium of a horizontal straight positioning is worth quite some money. And, expecially if you travel with duo-occupancy, the price is way more reasonable. I would rather not travel through the night in a seated position if I can at all avoid it.

On older rolling stock, the emergency handle is connected to the brake pipe, so it would make it dump all the air and cause an emergency brake application.

There is a little blue-yellow war raging between the national carrier and Regiojet and while I think that RJ's daytime products > common Eurocity (EC) trains, the ČD's Railjets and Pendolinos are still a superior products. As for the sleepers, ČD's modern sleepers beat RJ's couchettes any day.

Single occupancy seems very good value. A hard bed in privacy is better than a slightly softer upright seat with possible disturbance by others. You are lucky to have this choice. Many countries have no sleeper services available anymore.

For an 8 hour trip, day or night, I would opt for a coach seat. I would prefer the day, for the scenery.
However, it was interesting to see the room accommodations.
Since the bedding was thin, and the knob on your temperature control was missing, I certainly hope that there was sufficient heat in the cabin.

Ahh, Prague railway station... that certainly brings back a memory.
Back in the early 2000's, I was on vacation with my parents in... I think it was Plzen at the time. We decided to visit Prague. While we had a car, we figured... might as well take the train. Save on parking fees, and it's an experience.
So we get on this train and... it's the oldest rolling stock I've ever been on. Smoky diesel locomotive up front so old, it would've been in a railway museum anywhere else. Carriages looked decent enough, at first glance.
Halfway across the journey, I need to pee. So I walk back to the toilet and open the door. I am greeted by an interior entirely covered in shit. I'm talking: it's on the goddamn ceiling. This train toilet looked like it hadn't been cleaned since before the end of the Soviet Union. I ran back to my parents and got dad to check out that toilet. Grossest bathroom I've seen before and since.
The rest of the Czech Republic was quite nice, friendly people. But goddamn, I'm never getting on a train again there.

I like this video. Thanks for the heads up about the sleeper. Still, due to covid, if I travel overnight, I'll pay for a solo sleeper. The breakfast didn't look appetizing. That's why I like to bring my own food. Along as there is beer, wine, coffee and tea on board I'm good. I have to revisit Prague in the future. I need to plan another Eastern/Central European trip. The station is first rate. I can't wait until we can all travel again.

Dylan: It's a real shame that those beds were not any better. But I have to laugh in the high point of your video when you rolled down that window and said "everything is going to take flight!" and yeah it looked like just that! amazing! Be thankful those trains where you can pull down a window for fresh air. Trains, like amtrak, don't offer that any more. You are better off in a compartment than a sleeper compartment. Just to be safe. But yeah, daytime trips are MORE FUN. Great way to bang in the new year! keep it up! Stay safe! Hugs! From Sherlock.

Good review. Sleeper train vs day train - may depend on whether the sleeper train is a lot slower, as is the case in the UK. Also, sharing cabins outside the family isn't currently allowed in the UK (hasn't been since March 2020) - interesting that a different approach seems to be being taken.

I agree. This standard for this price is too much - only for personal compartment. Best option is take only one place in couchette car. But RJ ex-OBB couchettes are one of the best in this cars category (for ex. old and new PKP).

Another great video. I appreciate your honesty and frankness in all your videos. I live vicariously through your train travels and enjoy them very much.
Your comments hit all the right spots ie: cleanliness, space, service, comfort etc.
I would certainly appreciate your comments/opinions on the safety and security of the train stations you visit. As a long time European train fan who has travelled extensively on European trains I have become hesitant of future travel as a result of safety concerns in various cities especially Rome (Termini), Naples and Paris. Obvious pickpockets, thieves, sketchy people and a general sense of discomfort, along with horrifying stories of robbers, predators and victims of crime have caused me strong hesitation for future travel in Europe.
Can you comment about your experiences and train stations to avoid?
FYI- I found that AMTRAK in the USA also has become dangerous and scary trains to travel on.

    • @DylansTravelReports

Some of my conclusions after the trip in a couchette on the same route (it was my first time traveling in a couchette in like 10 years, so I didn't know what to expect):
    - even though I like hard mattresses, that one was a bit too hard
    - the pillow was a joke, I had to fold the blanket and the sheet to lay my head comfortably
    - there's no AC, and I was traveling in August when there was low-key 35°C outside. Imagine what an oven the coach was, it stood the whole day outside in this scorching sun in Prague!
    - in the morning there were about 15 degrees outside, so I woke up cold
    - despite all those things... I slept very well without waking up at all, but one of the factors might be the fact, that I didn't sleep a minute a night before (I had to get somehow to Prague from east Poland, which required 2 transfers in Katowice and Bohumin)
I paid €15,5 for the trip, which even for a Pole is small change, so... mixed feelings. I'd sum it up in a sentence: "Great, but never again" 😆

Pretty harsh review I think - any idea what you pay in UK for solo occupancy of an 500km plus (as the crow flies) sleeper - a LOT more than RegioJet charged you and drinks and food would be extra! Yes the bed may be a bit hard but really who wants to spend a whole day crossing Czech and Slovakia unless you are sightseeing? Great range of seated options too... (My wife is from Litomysl so nothing against the scenery - it is stunning!) AND overnight sleeper services in Europe should be supported.. So I would have been a little less negative especially in your 'headline'.. But thanks great review again and sat in Lockdown Brexited London made us all the keener to be travelling once again..

These are 40-year-old Austrian couchette cars, last refurbished around 20 years ago. ÖBB sold a number of them to RegioJet and ČD, others can still be found in nightjet trains, but might be replaced from 2022 as ÖBB ordered new rolling stock and is also rebuilding daytime passenger compartment coaches to couchettes in a new 4-berth layout. As the number of train connections is also increased, we will see how long they actually remain in service.
Of the coaches operated by RegioJet, only the "Astra" standard class coaches with inseat video entertainment are new, the rest is bought used and usually not modified very much. I'm curious how they will go on, perhaps there will be new interiors for some cars.

Enjoyable review, despite the negative aspects. I've noticed in a few of your videos that, in British usage, "depot" seems to mean a storage or service area for the trains. In the U.S., "depot" is another word for station.
