Hello there, I know this video is a bit old but I’ve just discovered this series, watched all your episodes on it so far and I’m enjoying it so much to see my favourite heritage line in Britain. I am starting a model railway and this is a huge inspiration. Thank you.
Yay! Happy to see a railroad layout project, especially running along a river and built in modular sections. I'm contemplating doing a similar one for the Lower Connecticut River Valley with the stream train (still in use for tourists) running from East Haddam to Old Saybrook (and thanks for measurements in feet)
This is going to be quite the undertaking. I'm sure you'll be up to the task. Time to re-watch Luke Towan's videos and maybe Märklin of Sweden? Also, that corner of the world where you are looks absolutely beautiful. Have a great weekend, mate. Cheers.
Sounds amazing, look forward to seeing more. I've loved trains & models since I was a kid, you unlocked a memory from seeing some steam trains on a family holiday to Devon. Never had the money to pursue this kind of hobby, thanks for sharing!
Thank you. It’s nice to have those memories from family holidays. It’s a shame it has become so expensive to model railways but I’ve found that the scenic dioramas can be created at a lower cost.
Hi Andy, knowing your attention to detail & thorough planning & execution this is going to be a superb layout. All the best for the build & please keep us informed of progress when you can. All the best..........Andy
Thanks Andy! It’s a learning experience but I’m fortunate that there are many channels like yours for tips and techniques. I’m hoping to know a lot more about model railways at the end of the project!
Excellent news. Huge undertaking. A cracking set of scenes to model. I'll be delighted to follow how things progress. The very best of luck with it all.
I cannot wait to see how this railway develops the SDR is my favourite preserved line, I have visited it many times. Dartmouth and Totnes area is one of my often frequented haunts. It has taken me 10 years to build my local line, and it still has a long way to go, so I wish luck with a project of this size.
This is going to be an amazing project, you are so very talented I know you will excel in the building of these. I look forward to watching all those videos and can only say a big THANK YOU. Can't wait to see everything you do.
I shall watch progress with great interest- I built an old Airfix kit of the Schools class 'Harrow' locomotive as I grew up in Harrow (our house backed onto the railway line between Harrow-on-the-Hill and West Harrow and I can remember waving to the drivers of engines like L92, so I enjoyed seeing that). I then decided it needed to be on a piece of track, so I then added a station to give some context, then a hotel next to the station, and then some shops with their gardens. I've got about 20 vehicles and about 150 figures to populate the diorama. I have the ground done but need to make a frame to get rid of the warping that has occurred. Then I'll add the buildings, fences, people and so on. These things do tend to get slightly out of hand! I've not touched it for a year now as I've been building a series of Spitfires and related aircraft to show the evolution and how it changed. By the way, the shots of the South Devon Railway look almost as good as your builds!
Thanks George. I visit the shop at Buckfastleigh regularly so I’m sure I’ll see you at some point. I saw on Instagram that you drove a loco last weekend- looked like great fun 👍🏻
Love your videos and projects. Really looking forward to watching this develop. Your scenic builds are great. Will be fascinated to see how you manage the modular part of putting boards together.
This is a project worth waiting for Andy! With the skills you posess I can imagine it will be awesome and look forward to following the build as it progresses, I know the SDR quite well and it will really offer you so much on the scenic front. Cheers Steve
I'm really looking forward to following this series. I live in Exeter and have driven past the sign shown at 1:09 many times on the way back home from Totnes. I've often wondered how many people ignored the quoted distance, took the hand on the sign literally, and turned right up at the next minor country lane to get to the station at Buckfastleigh. They'd have been very disappointed if they had!
I am so thrilled to be able to see what you are doing. I’ve had my layout up since May of 2022 and have yet to figure out what the heck I’m gonna do. I’m doing mine in American O Gauge but may add some HO, N and Z scale since I have all four. I’m so at odds on how to go about this. Again I am totally thrilled to see where you go as I find your videos just about the most outstanding. All the best. Tim
Thank you for your very kind words Tim. I’m sure you will work out what do do on your layout soon. I also find it difficult to start when I’m not entirely confident about what I’m doing. I don’t think we’re alone as most modellers seem to procrastinate!
Hi Andy. Really looking forwards to this one. You mentioned the new track going in, you might want to think of setting the date for your model as there are always changes to the railway and buildings and it’s impossible to keep up. Good luck from all the staff at Buckfastleigh model shop.
Thanks Mark. It’s a very good point - I might date it before the track work started and accept I won’t be able to keep up with all the changes. Thanks to all of you at the shop. I always find I can have a quick chat with you and learn a huge amount. I’ll definitely be looking for guidance throughout this project. How is your layout coming along?
@@DartsideScenics Still laying floorboards in the loft before starting the layout proper. Building Bishops Bridge SB by combining the Gaugemaster Fordhampton top half onto a Ratio bottom ( the 552 kit) and the Staverton SB (Wills) on my workbench at the moment.

Thanks very much. I love your channel and will definitely continue to watch it to help me get to grips with what I’m doing!! Best of luck with your modular layout 👍🏻
James Sewell Facit Station i live in New Zealand and watch videos on Tube on model railways.I too have just started a layout and modelling around South Devon and Somerset of the GWR era. I look forward to the updates and to see what ideas and techniques you have for modelling this part of the UK
fantastic and looking forward to many more. i was watching your hedge video from 1 year ago and liked the look of your dirt terrain you placed your horse hair hedges on. could you also show how you model your terrain?
Thank you! I use a mix of Woodland Scenics Earth Fine Turf and brown tile grout. If you look at my clapper bridge video at 40 seconds, there’s a small section on terrain there. If you have any questions, please let me know.
I love the idea. I'm modelling in OO and N gauges and, if I'll base the N scale layout on North Wales and the lines branching in Denbigh (due to childhood memories of a trip in the area in '85 for an English language immersion camp in Colomendy with my school - I'm from around Liège, in Belgium), I plan to model a section of the Tamar Valley Railway in OO (line wich is not that far from Totnes, on the Devon - Cornwall border) basing it mainly on Bere Alston and Calstock stations, although the end of the line in Callington appeals to me too). Can't wait to see what those modules will look like.
@@DartsideScenics Thanks for the message. I indeed plan to make a serie of videos on the construction of this layout, but it may take time for it to start as I'm still awaiting a new wheelchair and to find a wheelchair-adapted home at an affordable rent via the social services (I'm disabled due to a back injury). I may start by making buildings first then integrate them later on the layout itself, which will be built in "modules" on 40 x 30 cm Ikea wood photo frames to make it easily manageable for someone in a wheelchair. I'll keep you posted on this as well as on the way I'll make the "modules" join and align...
Well this is very exciting. A good series to watch as I embark on my own model railway project, particularly because I have learnt so much from your previous videos. Best of luck!
Oh wow! Been there, that's going to be really fun to model. Isn't there a mini train line there next to the wildlife centre? This is going to be a heck of a project for someone with your skills.
Thank you! That’s right, there is a mini train at Buckfastleigh. It’s too far away from the main line for me to fit on the boards I’m making but there is so much scope to add extra modules.
Looking foward to this, your scenery creations are first rate so this should be really good, many train layouts seem to concentrate of the workings of the trains often resulting on totally flat scenery, somehow I can't see that being the case here
@@DartsideScenics Several decades ago I spent 3 years at Uni in Plymouth, Flat is not a description I would use either, though eventually I hope to do my own layout based on a narrow gauge rack and pinion railway in the Swiss Alps, 20% Gradients there are the norm LOL
Best of luck with the project. Not a easy thing to depend on the gauge. I am doing part of the gwili railway in oo gauge. Don't for get you fiddle yards but also work out what stock you will run as it easy to get into the habit of buying stock you like but can make it look cramp if too big for not enough to run.
Thanks Michael. The Gwili railway looks beautiful and must be a really enjoyable project. It’s a very good point about stock and one of the things I’m nervous about. I’m lucky that the guys at the SDR shop are always happy to help and advise.
Wow. This is going to be a big project. Are you going to approach it as a series of dioramas, or will it be the other approach, of building all the baseboards, laying the track and then doing the scenics for the whole thing once it's running? Either way works, though I have a feeling the first might suit you better. A lot depends if it's going to be a layout that's permanently assembled, or whether it's a modular set up, put together for exhibitions or whatever. I look forward to watching your progress, whatever you do.
Hi Andrew. As you rightly said, I think the first option as the entire project is slightly overwhelming! I still need to consider how they’ll join due to the terrain difference and direction of the track but I think I have that figured out.
