Bam! Just as I was scratching head wondering what to do with the unbalanced volume of the vox track before even starting the 1st step of your 6-step-mixing tutorial so that master volume can be under -3 without big dynamic change, I finally found this! Now I'm going back to fix it because my vox compression has to do so much hahaha. Thanks so much for all the tutorial! You're the best!
This video is probably the most informative instruction I've had referring to vocal tracks. Accompanying this with your signal flow chart helps me greatly. Thanks.
Happy thanksgiving! All the videos you've done have helped me enormously to take the step from rough ipad garageband demoes to producing something more in line with professional studio stuff. Keep up the good work :)
This is very helpful! I've used volume automation, but this is so much better - being able to maintain the volume control slider for overall mix. Thank you!
You're very welcome! You can also do another gain plugin at the end of your plugin chain and automate that as your final volume automation instead of the volume fader.
Hey Band Guy! Happy Thanksgiving. Watched many of your videos over the last month or two, subbed today. I have a rule if I sub to a new channel I must drop an existing channel that I am subbed to, otherwise well you know you end up subbed to a thousand channels. So congrats you made my top 50 list today. Just so you know you replaced a tech-based channel that I really liked but rules are rules.
Really useful tip! Thanks for the video! Hey i have one doubt... i'm recording an acoustic song, guitar and vocals. I'm working on the guitar track and i discovered lot of hiss... i tried DeEsser, but i'm not getting big solutions. Could you recommend me any plug or any technique. By the way, if you notice one listener from Mexico about Goldbrick Champion maybe it's me haha. Greetings!
Hey Elvin! First, thank you for checking out Goldbrick- awesome! Hiss/hum is trickyyy to remove but there are some plugins dedicated to it. Maybe check out this (on sale now!): www.izotope.com/en/shop/rx-8-elements.html I haven't used it, but it is supposed to help with those types of issues! But it's always better if we can figure out where the hum came from and get it out before the recording. Could you tell me a little about your recording setting? Are you using a mic and interface?
@@TheBandGuide I’m using a Behringer u phoria umc202hd interface. I connect it to a MacBook Air. The mics, when I record acoustic guitar alone I used Behringer C-4. Are two small diaphragm condenser mics, when I record acoustic guitar and then I will insert drums and other instruments, I use an Audiotechnica AT2020. I bought the C-4 because I notice they don’t get to much noise... I suppose I’m doing something wrong hahaha. I set up the gain at the half more or less, also I’m using mymeter! The louder part of the song I’m recording gets 0 or 5db in the track. It’s a palm muting song, but at the end I start playing normal (the loudest part). I’m sorry for my long story!
@@ElVikingodelRock Sounds like a great setup! hum/noise is something we're all working to avoid! I think the first question is if it's really noticeable once the songs going- if so, potentially rerecording. It can also come from electrical interference in how things are plugged in... I know this is possible but I don't know the science well enough to explain it! Either way- you'll figure it out and I'm stoked to hear some music from you soon!
@@TheBandGuide Thanks for the advices Colin! Excuse me, for rerecording you mean record again, am i right? Just unplugged all my electronic devices, including the macbook and i noticed that hiss is a little lower. I'll continue making tests and trying another ways! Thank you so much!
Hi Colin, I'm little bit confused :-) In Static mix you apply the VU meter on the Master right with Peak set up? But here, considering the Gain, you act up on the Track? And when do you use the VU meter with Init (-18) and when the Peak (O)? Could you please narrow it down for me? I'm really serious about the mixing and really want to learn it and whats more I want to understand what Iĺl be doing. Thank you so much for your reply.
Hi Colin. I have tried this as my first step in the mix but it just feels virtually impossible without a mouse. Altering small increments in dB with the touch bad just shoots it, surely there’s a simpler way? Thanks
I have watched a lot of videos and yours are some of the best! When I try to automate increases in gain on my vocal tracks I feel like it can sound unnatural. Any tips for making the increases more subtle?
Thank you! 🙌🏼 I wish there was a steadfast approach but it really just comes down to listening back and tweaking. I typically do smaller changes and only go above 0.5-2db if still feels like it needs
Thanks Given to all, just a question Collin what automatisation should I use for a lead solo guitar ? Volume or gain ? I was about to do the volume but after this video I was wondering wich one to use first . Is a lead bluesy song. :) thanks a million.
Great question! Either works! One advantage of using the gain plugin is that if you still need to do small tweaks to overall volume, you could still use your fader

That's awesome, Mark! I agree- 2 huge concepts.

@@TheBandGuide Never thought of that, either. I've enjoyed the 5 min. series, btw.
