I think I finally just learned what webcomic artists use. Cause I'm like how do you get it so nice and clean and already templated! It's a pain to extract lines and color and omg... How the backgrounds look so nice and the people are so simple. Now granted there are some panels they do quick sketches themselves but I can see how this is used now.
Thank you so much! My God, the idea that I was going to have to pull out a ruler to draw the details of a building that was only going to show up for a couple of panels sounded awful.
It is. Marvel uses it for their comics and have the entire city of New York (from their universe) and use it for perspective in their books. (found out from How to Draw the Marvel Way)
ok just quick question, i heard you cant use sketchup for monetary purposes unless you bought the pro version.. so if you use it for a comic or prints that you will be making money off of, does that mean we could get in trouble for doing so? im new to this so ..
All this time I thought the webtoon artists were just super meticulous with their zooming and straight lines... I had a hunch that you could use software, but I had no idea it'd be this simple. Thanks for the great tutorial! I'll play around and give this a go.
Does anyone know if one can use legally the free 3D designs from Warehouse to the backgrounds? If I use those designs would that be plagiarism even if give credit to the designer?
Right now it's about 90% my own models, and I'm working to get it to 100%. Originally this house was not created for use in comic backgrounds, it was created as a reference for a novel series where it is also a setting. It was made just so I could keep track of things like the couch is here, the dining room is on this side of the kitchen, there's this many book shelves, etc. Now that I'm actually using it for comic background work I'm updating it so that is 100% my own creation to better match exactly what I'm looking for and not use anyone else's hard work.
@@Katy-L-Wood Sorry to keep spamming this question and I know this post is old, but can i publish a webtoon using the models downloaded from 3D warehouse or will it have some copyright issue? Please help me
Very nice. I have an older version (8) and do a screenshot then play around with it. I usually get it nice with threshold then set it under my character line art layers and draw the characters in over it.
This is really helpful, thank you! I had a question, I am looking to start my first comic in a few months, and honestly I am torn between learning this program for backgrounds (not even totally sure my computer will handle it/the file sizes?) and just straight learning how to draw backgrounds better. Do you have any tips on what you think? I hope I’m not bothering you.. thank you for this video!
Glad I could help! The best thing to do would be to learn how to do backgrounds better on your own. Gotta learn the basics before you start bending the rules, you know? It'll show if you don't have the base knowledge there. My biggest advice would be to find pictures you like and just draw them in the style you'd like to do your comic in. References are your friend! Another great resource is the tutorial series "how to think when you draw." It is fabulously helpful and has a little bit of everything.
Katy Wood Ahh thank you so much for answering me, it means a lot! You're definitely right about that.. I appreciate your opinion on this because I want to get started right away! Thank you!
Did you model the furniture yourself or did you get it from the warehouse? You said that it was easy to learn and I've been trying to make my own furniture but I've been struggling...
Only reading Webtoons I realized that all that extremely careful and detailed scenarios are made jn SketchUp. I always suck at making scenarios... 🙈 Thank you a lot for the tip, sis! Very useful info!
did you make the models yourself? one of my biggest concerns about my comic is the models that I can use for my backgrounds, I would like to make them myself but I'm still pretty bad at 3D modeling, if you used another person's models, did you buy them?, where did you find em'? heeeelp
Built it on my own! I've had the design of this house for ages, so it was just a matter of taking my drawings and translating them into a 3D sketchup model. Took a few weeks to finish the whole thing.

Yep! It's a pretty popular method, though not one that many people know about.

I'm out here making backgrounds when I could have cheat and made life easier for my self !

Wow, I never reliased sketchup can be used in comic making. Thank you so much for this. This actually saves time making backgrounds.

I'm having difficulty with drawing my character in 3D background. They look unnatural and non perspectively. Could you share some tips
if you draw characters in 2D instead of 2.5D (mimicking 3D with 2D [Perspective usually]) it will look most definitively weird.
Does Sketchup have models? That's what I use in Blender. You render the model together with the background
@@afanaobeba7876 yeah.. you can download it on 3d warehouse...
too bad i have no clue on how to use sketchup ....and i have no time... rip gonna have to learn 1st point perspective XD
Literally the reason why i chose Interior Design in College 😆

@GlowFish They don’t need proof to cut off your licence, though.

Any tips on saving time while colouring the backgrounds or applying effects (textures, shadows etc)?
Great video!! Would like to see how you color them, thanks
Katy, this is the best Sketchup background tutorial I've seen!
I don't know if I missed anything but is that layer is transparent so we can go and color it
Thank you for the video. Super informative.
So you dont do any thumbnails ?
Oh no, I do! I use that to decide the general composition, then build the model.
So we can export ready made backgrounds and not draw it ourselves and use it in our comic for free?
Omg.. thx bro.. I respect you..
thanku for this nice tutorial !
also I like the way you talk haha
Very good, thanks!

Blender could totally work for this. Probably any 3D program could be used for it!

Does this work with Clip Studio Paint too or only photoshop?
Yep, you should be able to do it in any art program!
Hi. For the background of your comic, did you made those model yourself? Or did you used some free models that provided by sketchup?
Built it on my own! I've had the design of this house for ages, so it was just a matter of taking my drawings and translating them into a 3D sketchup model. Took a few weeks to finish the whole thing.
Katy Wood Wow, cool! Thats awesome! I love the furniture that you created.
Lov your work
