    i'm in my 70's and have bowled candlepins my whole life and still league bowling. i got to try duckpins for the first time recently and really liked it, a lot more pin action and higher scores. maybe someday i'll get to try tenpin bowling. i like all kind of bowling but not sure of the new string bowling i've heard of.

    I remember Duckpin bowling as a kid in Norfolk, VA, at Bowlarama Lanes. It was a lot of fun. Seeing Donnie leave a lily (5-7-10) on lane 13 made me smile a little, knowing that that split isn't exclusive to regular bowling.

      Johnstown? Cool. As a kid, my Dad took me to Troc-a-Rena Lanes (it burned down in 1970) in New Kensington to do duckpins, and as an adult, I've gone to the Knights of Columbus in Bellevue (they're open to the public a couple nights a week...or at least they were when I was going there).
      Duckpins are great because as a 6 year old, I was able to throw the ball down the lane with somewhat normal speed, and with a little concentration, could keep it on the lane without the aid of bumpers. For a little kid, I think duckpins would be more fun than bumper bowling. I can remember, the very first time my Dad took me, one of the games I had was a 54...for a 6 year old, that's great. I'm guessing my other two games didn't add up to 54, but that's OK.

    I've never seen duckpin bowling before. Watching this makes me want to try it. I've had some high average ten pin bowlers tell me it's all luck. These multiple champions tell me different. FWIW, I can't believe the reset in the first frame. What in the world was he thinking?

    • @davidphipps1044
      @davidphipps1044 2 роки тому +2

      Those 10 pin bowlers wouldn't even average 110 playing this. They hate it because they can't compete.

    • @russs7574
      @russs7574 2 роки тому

      No, it's not luck. It's definitely skill. The big thing with duckpins is that a) There is less pin action than in tenpins, so strikes are rarer, and b) You've got practically no margin for error.
      I carry about a 175 average, and if I had a dollar for every strike I've pulled out of my @$$ after I've hit the head pin straight on, I'd have been able to retire a lot sooner than I did. In duckpins, if you hit the head pin straight on, you carry the head pin, and the 5-pin....and that's it.

    They're using the old school projectors for scoring. I was in a league that still used those in the early 90s. You'd write on the glass plate with a grease pencil, and erase it afterwards with a damp cloth or paper towel. Once after a game, one of the kids was scuffing up the soles of his shoes with steel wool, and then he proceeded to erase the scores with the steel wool! He pretty much ruined the glass.

And a lot of times the ball was fading away from the headpin. I am right handed and would come on a slight angle so the ball was pushing into the pocket.
