The first tip I give my friends that want to try bowling is "what's comfortable for you?". Another is to have friends or family that you can bowl a game or two with first, that would be great. It helped me to have my dad or high school friends to help me speak some of the lingo when I first got started with my pro shop staff.

I haven't picked up a ball or rolled one down the lane in over 20 years. Last new ball I purchased was a Colombia Titanium Messenger. Is that still a viable ball with today's lanes?
Edit: The Titanium is 15.8 lbs with I think 1-2 ounces positive weight. I use a relaxed fingertip grip.

It's not all about price point with the high performance balls. They can hook in ways that a beginner bowler isn't ready to control. They need something thar doesn't overreact.

Absolutely, you make a great point! High-performance bowling balls can be quite challenging for beginners, as their strong hook potential can be tough to control. It's essential to find the right balance between price and performance, especially when you're just starting out in the sport.

There are a couple possibilities. First off, every alley oils differently and has a slightly different house shot, so that will change it up a bit. The biggest reason though is likely the lane conditions. If you walk into an alley that just oiled, you get to bowl on a fresh pair, it's going to be more how you're expecting. However, you may go into an alley right after a league, so the lanes are going to be in transition, or already in burn when you start bowling. The most complicated thing though is the way house bowlers change the lanes. Because they use plastic bowling balls, the oil gets pushed down the lane instead of absorbed, and this can be extremely difficult to adjust to if you don't understand why it's happening. When this happens it causes the front of the lane to dry up, and the back of the lane to have more oil, which is the opposite of what you usually expect. Specifically with the Katana Strike, since it's a hybrid with pretty average core dynamics, it's going to have some good midlane read, but still pretty angular as it's asymetric. So if you are bowling on a lane that isn't fresh, especially if it has been bowled on a lot by house bowlers, it's going to be extremely different in each scenario.

I kinda came to this video expecting to hear a list of all the things I need to care for a ball too like cloths and cleaners, but none of that was mentioned here. Same with the different types of grips.
Instead you kinda just told us that we need to know everything about our form and preferences despite being new to bowling
