I’m so glad the writers made Black Canary act like a real trained therapist. Even when they know you’re lying, they won’t show it and ask the right questions to bring out the real answers.
Just like from Season 1. I like that she still maintains that role.

I just noticed this. Gar's skin is this really sickly shade of green. Before it was this leaf green, but it is so dull and life lifeless.

I think it’s a sorta pale like colour and quite possibly a sign of his insomnia, depression and all that taking a toll

It reacts like actual skin. It reflects how we treat our health in other parts.
He gets brighter skin when he's healthy and a sickly green when he doesn't take care of himself.

Wow. Gar was pretending to be cooperative but Dinah managed to still see all that.

She likely knew going in that he would lie as avoidance. Both her training as a psychiatrist and briefing from the others. She was probably never going to sign off on him given how obvious he's not ready. The one check-up requirement is just to touch base and create an opportunity to open up. But it's also to force the ultimatum of going through the healing process or leaving. Garfield was always going to have to jump through the hoops to return to the team.

Considering how young he is and the surprisingly large number of loved ones he lost, this traumatic breakdown was LONG overdue and I'm really really glad to see that he isn't forcing himself to move on from all that hurt anymore, even though we saw that he definitely tried to. Just admitting that you feel deeply hurt is the first step. The survivor's guilt he has is pretty big
He's been carrying a lot of weight since.
It’s not just that, when they arrived on Mars he was Psychically attacked so it put pressure on all those cracks he already had
And they legit had a full on intervention where they were all like “stop being depressed” 💀💀💀
This was a long time coming. Enduring trauma after trauma-eventually there is a breaking point. He needs to put himself first, do the work. He needs to be away from anything related to being a super hero. It’s not good for him right now.
@@SpeedyWings2323 robotman was the only one with a good reason for him to stop being depressed and move foward. Virgil and Jaime honestly just made things worse being there.
What makes Black Canary so much more different from everyone else that tried to talk to BB was that she laid it all on real. She didn't sugarcoat anything or try to make BB feel better. She just gave him the reality check he needed
And I love that she instantly saw through Garfield’s bullshit I mean I’m sure any trained therapist would have but she used it to her advantage to get Beast Boy to admit his problems
Black Canary isn't there to treat the symptom, she's trying to treat the problem.
Black Canary has the necessary training. The others didn't. That's why it was so different.
That’s the difference between a trained professional and the people that love you. No matter how much someone loves you, they aren’t likely to help as much as someone trained to do so.
That’s the problem. Her not sugarcoating or at least being more compassionate makes things harder on him. Therapy 101 always be understanding not rushable or harsh when comes to feelings.

Having Greg Cipes come back as Gar initially felt kinda like a cop-out (mostly because pretty much everyone else is voiced by different actors) but I don’t think anyone else could have done this scene as well. Greg has voiced Beast Boy for a long time, so he knows this character better than anyone else. And he really did do a great job here

This is the realest, most mature scene I've seen in any kids show ever, and I applaud the writers for treating such a serious topic with the care and respect it needed. The writers of this show deserve an award!
I think YJ isn’t for kids no more. They got a bit more mature as the seasons go by. But yea, I agree with you. The show’s damn mature when it needs to be. And I like it a lot.

Young justice is startin to not really become a kids show anymore with all the trauma their dealing with it’s good but with all that’s happenin it’s not really lookin like a kids show to me anymore
@@beaniebaby516 It still is given it's television rating and you know what? That's a good thing, more kids media should discuss these topics with this level of maturity, respect and dignity. This is something other, less competent kids shows fail to do as they either don't address these topics or they talk about them in a very sanitized and condescending way that implies they don't respect the intelligence of their audience

She remembers the one thing about therapy that a lot of people forget. For it to work, the person receiving it needs to want it to work. So instead of forcing Gar to open up, like Megan and the people at his intervention, she focused on making him realize that he needs help

And she had so many problems with Oliver.
I loved black canary in young Justice, she is known as an expert martial artist but this also shows a different side of her. She’s nurturing, and fun. She’s also sensitive, and seems to have real training for this line of work.
This is why I love Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. He picked an awesome woman to be his wife. I'd wish he get some more screen time with Black Canary.
It also shows how this show knows how to use it's characters well. This was a season of Martian scheming, Battles between Chaos Lords, Kryptonian Jailbreaks, and New God scuffles. In a combative sense, Canaray is out of her league here. She's not helpless, but she's not on the same level of power as her Extremely powerful teammates. So instead, they have her fighting the emotional battles and helping people to heal, from Garfield and Zatara, to the kids trapped on Klarion's bus. That is a really effective way to avoid her being renedered obsolete by power creep.
Finally, Gar admits he needs help. I’m glad.

And it makes Greg all the more amazing in my opinion, showing how he can voice both a cartoonish version of Beast Boy (from Teen Titans), and a more mature and broken version (from this fantastic show).

As a kid who LOVED BB during the OG Teen Titans TV show, seeing him now when catching up on YJ … the waterworks when he admits his need for help aloud just hurts. Seeing the usually cheery BB from my childhood to this (even if different shows) just hurts to watch.
and how crazy is it that it's the same voice actor? All these years and he can still pull off the BB voice, it's a little diffrent but I think that's intentional.
Poor Gar has been through so much and I'm glad he can finally get the support he needs.
That definitely added to the impact. Yes, this is a different BB technically. But it still sounds and looks like the one who was always trying to make Raven laugh when she was having a bad day or the one playing Stinkball with Cyborg. This scene really added to the character where he is now also Garfield, a person, not just Beast Boy, a cheery kids hero.

Wow. Fantastic performance from Greg. The pain, guilt and regret finally came out and I felt all of it. Greg poured his heart and soul into this scene. And Vanessa played her part just as well. Dinah was understanding, patient and asked the right questions to get Gar to open up.
Great scene overall.
Such a step up from having to voice the character in Teen Titans Go!
Vanessa Marshall is the voice actress for Dinah! Oh that's great I liked her as Hera on Star Wars Rebels.
The writing, the acting, this whole scene was a damn Masterpiece and should have won some kind of award
As someone who lost my best friend at a young age I could feel BB’s pain. It’s hard, and even harder to talk about at times. The emotions and trying to decipher how to act on them tears anyone up.
I guess as they say, the only thing to fix a problem, is to strongly accepted it...

I lost my best friend too. I was actually having that conversation about "I could have done something". But the line, "even if you did everything right, bad things still happens." F-ing hurts....
The first step to recovery: admitting there's a problem. Finally the healing process can start with Gar, he's been through so much and he's only 17-19, no one should have to go through that much so young.
It's been 10 years since he met the Young Justice team and got that blood transfusion from M'Gann.
He was 8 when all of that happened so if you do the math right he's probably 18 at this point

Black Canary is the only one who focused on how Gar's depression was affecting him while everyone was trying to cheer him up by saying how his depressed attitude is hurting them and that he needs to get back up for them, not for him. That's why Dinah was able to get through his shell and realize how hurt he is being to himself
I don't think it was really that cut and dry. They know how much he loves and cares about people, so they thought appealing to that might make him open up.

That hurt... Garfield is honestly one of the most kind-hearted heroes in DC
... seeing all the torment he went through is just so tragic.
He's usually a lead weight to whatever team he ends up on, seeing him trying to act like a leader was just sad... He's really lucky Batman Inc was secretly backing them up. I like the character, but seeing him try to be so important really grates. He has second-class powers, almost no real education (He's generally portrayed as illiterate and learned English from hip hop videos) and honestly, he's pone of the least skilled heroes if he can't transform his way into something with an advantage.
@corjonbett dude, Garfield has what is consider a grade A power. He has just as good of deductive reasoning as Robin, and it has been shown in MULTIPLE mediums.
Due to his constant transformations, he also has natural senses for danger and suspicion. He's also great at sensing the true nature of other people.
How can you love the character when you can't see past the typical character flaws to see his true potential and abilities.
What's so great about turning into animals? He can't even blend in, because he is always green... A human with a gun would be able to kill most animals on Earth, and he's supposed to fight much worse as a super hero. He's also... considerably more impulsive than he should be. It's really only his wealth that makes him any sort of asset to the outsiders... and they got along much better after his depression bout, really.@@GilDice
I really love this scene, and overall this season so far. Did anyone else notice Gars skin looks a sickly green and when he gets more help it returns to normal? A cool detail I thought.

People who suffer from insomnia tends to have a sickly pale complexion.
I love the detail that as the season progressed and BB became more depressed his skin tone got more and more muted. I’m happy BB is finally on the road to recovery
I think this points out the importance of seeking professional help, and realizing that as a friend there's only so much you can do trying to help a friend who's dealing with grief or another psychological issue. The rest of Garfield's friends couldn't reach him despite the good intentions, but Black Canary was able to figure out how to do just that and executed.

I'm really glad that they did it this way, having all the friends and family and intervention fail and then he gets to Dinah and she pulls through. A lot of people try to help their mentally ill loved ones on their own and it usually ends the same way, with them getting frustrated when nothing is working, and then they finally get professional help and it works. Psychiatry doesn't get the respect it deserves, it's as much a branch of medicine as setting bones or diagnosing fevers, and people shouldn't attempt to do it on their own or dismiss professionals.
The human mind is infinitely complicated. They’re up there with rocket scientists.
I just wish it was less expensive…i want help so bad but I can’t afford and nobody will give it to me so ill suffer till i can or until i give up…

This is hands down Greg’s best preformance. He usually voices beast boy with his carefree attitude. But here all we feel is his pain

Fun fact when Greg Cipes was asked to come back to play beast boy he was actually asked to do closer to his normal voice because most of the time he’s been beast boy it was more at a higher pitch and he said it took some getting used to. I think this scene is an example of how well he’s mastered a character he’s played probably longer than anyone here

Dinah knew every question to ask. Her therapy Sessions have been some of the best content on the show even back on season 1. And even the lil extra ones in the credits. Like Zatara after He was finally free from Fate. Dudes been stuck in there for 10 years. Not just TV time but our physical time too. I couldn't imagine losing agency of my body for that long
We can't help but thank Dinah for finally being able to make Gar open up. When in combat, her voice is her weapon. But here, her voice becomes the reliever to help Beast Boy with his depression. Her gentle voice and the way she really handled asking beast boy those questions is now the defining moment of Gar's road to recovery. This is why Black Canary's one of my favorite DC Superheroines.

So what's Gar's position in the Outsiders now that he's admitting that he's going to need help? Is Gar going to step back into an advisor role to Cassie and take a slightly hands-off approach?

Probably step back as an advisor, maybe only going in as extra muscle, but he’s not in the mental state to be leading anyone right now. If he does become leader again, it will be when Black Canary feels he’s ready, not before.
Well they wanted him to lead the team again but he isn't at 100% so it could advise or be on monitor duty and direct from the base

To finally hear him say “i need help” just hits you right in the critical spot of the feels
i havent seen this show, but this scene appeared to me in tiktok and it really left me intrigued. I dont know the context of everything they are saying, but i was surprised to see how accurate they portrayed a therapy session. It really is like this. Also that last line hit me hard “Admitting that is a start”, thats what they also told me. Admitting that you need professional help is such a good start.

this is late in the 4th season, this poor boy, we meet him in season 1 but he isn't remotely the beast boy we know yet, and everything he goes through, from season 1, to 2 and 3, and now 4. They cut a good amount of the stuff that goes on in this scene probably to dodge the bots but if you find the full scene i recommend you recognize you'll be getting a ton of spoilers from it if the show interests you.

This entire season i was screaming for someone to get this poor child a therapist i am so glad he got the help he needed
God, this takes me back to Young Justice season 1. “Disordered” was just so Good an episode! Every one of the characters got to show that fragile side, Wally and his denial, Aqualad and his sense of responsibility, Robin and his fear of becoming lost, Artamis and her fear of her past, Miss Martian and her emotional state, and Superboy trying to find himself while finally admitting he has problems with his anger.
And not Beast Boy admitting to himself that all the people he has been losing has finally taken a toll on his mind.
Just powerful stuff.
Gar has gone through issue after issue and a lot of deaths from family and friends in the young justice universe. Even a positive and friendly person like beast boy takes a toll on his mind like the real world

bb’s humility and honesty is something i really honor.
This is where I think this show has broke ground in the superhero mold this is real. Real guilts, real emotions, real troubles that plague us all and I love that the writers are acknowledging things like mental health.
Our boy needs a hug!!!! He’s been through sooooo much and he finally let it out!!!
He still miss Conner, but if he’s alive he should return, and I’m worried about his and Perdita’s relationship and hope the can reconcile and get back together cause they’re the perfect couple back in Season 3, I hope he gets better soon.
Black Canary's role as therapist for young super heroes with issues goes way back to the 1970's Green Lantern/Green Arrow saga under Denny oNeil and Neal Adams. Hal Jordan, Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance find Roy Harper (Speedy) facing drug addiction. Ollie is unable to deal with his former sidekick's troubles but Dinah did. She was helpful in getting Roy rehabilitation program.
Dinah sure has a way to get people to open up. I was so hoping she would do the same for Gar!

Oh my God Greg Cipes really put a lot of effort into that. Whether it’s teen titans or young justice he will always be the voice of beast boy for me. And this time around he really outdid himself. Bravo man.
I think this is why some people are afraid of therapy. You go in, and with a few words, they break your walls down. Its scary, but it really does make you feel like a human again.
Every last one of his friends and his girlfriend try to talk to him. He pushes them away. 4 min with Canary and he cracks into a weeping mess... Masterful Writing...

Black Canary is killing it as a therapist. Gar is in excellent hands. She knew from the start he was trying to mask, and she called him on it in a firm but sensitive way.
I like how Black Canary is a the Therapist. Considering she lost her Mother also Black Canary.
I am aware that changes happen from Universe to Universe, but it's nice that she may have some lived expirence.

To be fair we should think not just Black Canary but also Megan and even Garfield‘s ex-girlfriend which I’m sure she will gladly come back once she hears the news but to be fair I’m grateful to all three for helping out somebody who I have been patient and also even though I’ve been annoyed I’m quite grateful that everything has paid off in the end.

This is gonna be awkward, happy, and sad when he learns that Conner is alive.
Why?
Well the happy and sad parts are obvious, the tiny bit of awkwardness will come into play because everyone spent so long mourning Conner's loss only for them to learn that he's alive.
It won't be super awkward, just a moment of, "The pain we went through was pointless."

One of the reasons why I feel it's kind of a mistake to of faked out Conner's death like that.
Could of stuck with it but they had to go for an out.
I’m glad to see Beast Boy finally admitting he needs help. I understand he suffered great losses but it’s high time he realized there was nothing he could’ve done to prevent the tragedies he experienced. As Black Canary said, there are things we can control and things we can’t. I have no doubt Beast Boy will make a full recovery from his depression. It won’t be easy nor will it be easy to mend the fences in his relationships but I believe he can do it.
Peter Parker: I understand what you're going through Garfield. The reason I fight crime is because through my inaction I lost someone important to me, and I'm gonna make sure no one loses a loved one again...... not if I can help it.

I don't think I have ever seen a kids show address depression like this, not just an episode but the whole season.
This Beast Boy having the same voice actor as Teen Titans Beast boy is making this even more harrowing for me, it's like listening to a child hood friend's breakdown at a real therapist. 10/10 Show
This show is amazing for DC. DC you have a major treasure here and you aren’t realizing what a gold mine this show is.
I'm glad when shows like YJ display real life matters like mental health issues because I feel like kids needs to see those stuff in order to raise awareness. Moreover, it also makes the show more compelling and so grounded because mental health issues are real and it could happen to anyone, and people who are dealing with mental health issues can have something to relate to or that they feel like they are identified. But I'm mostly glad that in the show, there is no stigma towards mental health issues. Instead, it encourages people to seek help and that there is no shame in admitting that you are hurting and struggling.
I wish we got more scenes like this in other superhero/magical adventure series show us how traumatic events effect the characters and show us how it effects them because when something traumatic and life changing events happen it gets swapped under the rug im glad young justice made this scene and i hope we see more from other shows
I'll always be a marvel person but I have to admit, when it comes to their animated stuff, when DC nails it, they *nail* it!
Sometimes, I think that these writers either went through similar trauma themselves or had a loved one who went through it. This scene is simply too realistic.
Beast Boy's sadness is soooo realist for a cartoon and i think a lot of person who see this video can feel the same.

At first it seemed Garfield could just blow through the session by saying the right things and be done with it. But the more Canary asked, the harder it was for him to answer.
I did not know Greg Cipes had this kind of range. He was always great as bb in teen titans, but this is something else.
As someone who has been in therapy basically my whole life, I can say that this is extremely accurate and that canary is one hell of a therapist.
I also love that young justice didn’t shy away from how hard coping can be. It always unrealistic how easily people in shows get over loss and tragedy, they did this well.

The best thing that the writers did, was to make Gar say "I don't know" talking about what he could have done or what's tourmenting him. That's the best representation of the feeling we can all have in this situation. One of the first state is knowing there is a problem, but not knowing what it is, how to explain it of how to feel it. And this is very hard.
Awesome scene. My only complaint here is missing the part where Gar talks about everyone he lost and how he could’ve helped. Why was that segment cut out in this clip?

Can we please clap it up for Greg Cipes? He's always been the best BB for me, man. His performance in YJ especially has been AMAZING
I wasn't a fan of this arc, it felt like too much time was wasted during zatanas and artemis arc before he actually got help. But this scene more than makes up for it. Probably my faviroite scene of the seasons so far
This is actually very accurate in some cases I was depressed for a long time before people noticed and became concerned. People have their personal drama going on behind the scenes. So to me this is accurate
I loved this scene so much. Me and my brother were both just stuck in the heart by the end of it. they did a great job writing this part.
Gar caved in and started to cooperate, but Dinah knew there was something he wasn't really admitting..until the survivors guilt finally broke Gar .
No matter how many times I watch young justice, I can't get over how different beast boy is here then how he was in teen titans.

I like these two, and this whole setup: very professional- it truly is refreshing.
Cant believe how this scene reminded me of when i was in therapy and finally blurted everything out, the relief and the amount of tears that fell... It really is the first step to admit and accept that you need help.

This is what I've been missing in season 3: Realistic and tear-jerking moments for our beloved characters as they go through character growth. I always loved the psychiatric scenes the Team had with Black Canary in season 1, and once again, it's done respectfully here with Beast Boy. Garfield is talented and powerful as a superhero, but underneath all that green skin, he is still just a child who had suffered so much trauma and admitting that even he needs help was beautifully done.
Gosh, I remember doing this exact thing when I first started therapy. Acting like everything was really fine and saying half truths to get it over with, but I eventually was able to open up and understand what was really wrong.
This scene is so powerful and truly mirrors what a good therapist should do
wow... this scene is actually really well done even if its a stand-alone scene
its uplifting when beast boy walks in and starts answering questions pretty well, and the moments where you realize that he isn't really being truthful is well timed.
To top it off, the end of the scene was built up to nicely and paid off really well with him finally admitting that he needs help, which is especially relieving to hear if you've seen how much he denied it in previous scenes.
He was lying through his pointed teeth at the start. It';s only when Canary prods the right cracks that he admits everything
She doesnt ever call him out even though she knows good and well hes lying. She just continues forward asking questions and the truth comes out naturally.
Maybe it's because Greg Cipes is doing the role a second time around..but after watching this, I can't help but envision the TITANS version of Beast Boy being the one making this confession.
Then again, the original Titans series never acknowledged any of the trauma BB endured in life
I can feel Garfield's pain.... But on the bright side healing his pain but his healing process has a long way to go and I hope he complete his healing process
This shows that these young superheroes are not emotionally prepared for being superheroes like Batman and the rest of the league. This encounters may strengthen them to become great or it could make them realize that they aren't up for it.
I think this is such a great way of showing the humanity within these super-human/meta-human beings.

You’re never emotionally prepared for the loss of a loved one, especially when you’re in the business of saving others. It’s a common problem among first responders.

Seeing the fun loving, easily distracted BB like this is hard. Especially when you finally get to the pieces that made him fall apart. All starting with losing his parents.
