Also the last to win without the stupid playoff system. Only a few champions since then can say that.
One of the most unique things about Matt Kenseth especially during the 2000's is that he would seldom qualify well (in fact, he would often qualify quite poorly), and then he would methodically make his way through the field and usually be amongst the biggest movers of the race. As a Kenseth fan growing up, that was satisfying to watch his progress throughout the race and the broadcast booth acknowledging that "this is just what he does." Kenseth was certainly not the best driver of his era, but I appreciated the hell out of him for his racing etiquette and humble personality. It was awesome to see him win and how much the wins meant to him.
Don’t forget all those years he drove at Roush in equipment that likely was holding him back. Soon as he went to Gibbs, he took off, speed wise at least. Just like when Harvick left RCR. Kenseth definitely had more wins and titles in him than what he actually got.
He always was starting mid 20s every weekend but always was there at the end. I miss them 2000s good times!
If I remember right a lot of that was because he'd run the same setup for both qualifying and the race. He was willing to sacrifice a few positions in qualifying but not have to worry about getting the car setup back for racing conditions. I think Mark Martin used to also do that so he may have picked that up from Mark

Matt, thank you for sharing that story about Carl and Sterling. I was never a big Carl fan, but as someone who works with the elderly and disabled, and many people with Parkinson’s, I have a lot of respect for him as a person now. It’s nice to see the good in humanity
Is it just me or is Carl becoming more and more interesting after he’s been retired. Like all these stories are coming out all the years later that we never knew of. I’d love to see him on Jr’s show

Carl Edwards was the dumbest Nascar driver ever, absolute 2x cup champ if the dude had a brain on him he was so good but destroyed his chances by just being dumb.

Having watched Matt race up here in Wisconsin since he was 16 "The Brat" nickname did come from him being so young dominating over the older drivers. There was a time when he won at Madison in the early 90s and Todd went on the track to interview Matt and the mic didn't work. After spending several minutes realizing the batteries were dead then changing them Todd started to interview him of which Matt made the comment, "it would help if you had batteries in the mic that worked" and right then Todd stated "that's why we call him The Brat"!
Todd's been doing his on show on UA-cam since the 80's on Sunday mornings so it will be fun to listen to him comment about this interview filling in the blanks.
Matt was my driver for his whole career. He was a great driver, but his dry sense of humor is the main reason he was my favorite.
Kenseth had more car control than anyone ever gave him credit for.

I was at that Martinsville race. The entire place cheered and knew what Matt was doing the place went wild. Then the entire place turned into Gordon fans. It was an amazing sports day.

The races between him and Jeff Burton were some of the best I ever saw. Dover and Texas especially. In the closing laps.. Jeff go the best of him but man talk about wheel to wheel for dozens of laps. Miss those days

The 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion is really good at telling stories. I hope he shares more stories down the road on the podcast. It’s a lot of fun to binge watch this. Have him and Kevin Harvick on the show at some point, and possibly talk about fights in motorsports

Wow, Conrad Morgan, I forgot all about him..Some true greats at Slinger, Matt Kenseth is obvious, but Robbie Reiser in the 71 Bob Fish Pontiac, Dick Trickle, Ritchie Bickle Jr, Tony Bennet (I think he ran the Genuine Draft car). The Laufers, the Hanson Brothers. Al Schill and his son Jr (I know he was a good friend of Matt's and what happened was horrible) Marv Zudema in the only Ford capable of racing at the time!!!! All great race car drivers and I enjoyed it alot, I have played trivia with Al Schill at a local bar a few times years back, I haven't seen him in awhile, but always a super nice guy. I have pictures of my kids in his Race Car. I don't follow racing to much since Matt, Jeff, Dale Jr and etc retired, it's just not the same. I will admit I was not a Matt Kenseth fan at Slinger in the late 80's, but we were Robbie Reiser fans.
Matt was one of the best at car control. He would get the best out of his car, and would come from nowhere in the mid to late stages of a race, and show them how it was done. If Matt was on the pole for a race, everybody else was just racing for second unless the car broke. He wasn’t one to start things, but he wouldn’t stop if he was provoked😊
I’ll tell you what it’s actually a lot of fun to listen to all these different stories by Matt Kenseth. I really love his story on how he was called Matt the brat, which is funny. I’ll tell you what I would love to see Jimmie Johnson, and his stories eventually.

One of the drivers I had the most respect for. People definitely underestimated Matt's ability. Meet him in Richmond and hands down one of the best drivers I met 2nd was Carl lol. So funny that he was talking about Carl too. The good days

2006 Bristol Dale Jarrett actually was in his last year with Yates. He didn't change to MWR until 2007, but that could be hard to remember especially as a driver since Dale still drove the UPS car

Great listen! Was a longtime Matt fan and remember most of these. The only ones missing are Harvick at Pocono in 04. Vickers at Martinsville in 2011. And he and McMurray got into it once in 04 I'm pretty sure. And Tony a couple times.

Matt was always one of my favorite drivers, raced clean and had a ton of respect.
Matt was/is such a respectable man..nevermind in a race car. He was eye opening talent when he started racing. He is a legend who raced with legends in his time.
Kenneth was awesome to watch racing. This was an awesome interview and great to see Matt again.
His 2006 feud with Tony Stewart is so forgotten about. A couple of run ins with him and getting spun by Jeff Gordon costed him the championship.

As much as I love Robbie Reiser, Robbie cost Matt that title. They gambled and lost at Kansas, ran out of gas at Dover, and were abysmal at Phoenix.

Matt Kenseth always stuck out to me as being a good sportsman who knew what he needed to do to win. He could be aggressive but in the cleanest ways!

Good one with kesolowski, mad at denny hamlin, comes down pit road pissed at hamlin and hits Kenseth in the door and stewart in the rear. He knew he "oops" when he hit stewart and backed up, tony put her in reverse and smashed his hood in.
Conrad Morgan is a hell of an underrated WI driver, I wish more people knew who he was outside of the Midwest

My family were Kenseth fans. We went to his Cambridge WI parade when he won the Championship ( The day after Christmas if my memory is right). His first gift shop was part of a laundry mat.
Lake Ripley was a fun place for quite a few years for us.
I loved when Kenseth won in his 2nd to last start driving for Gibbs. I despise JGR and still say that was a disservice getting rid of Kenseth for Bell. Bell could’ve used one more season in Xfinity and Kenseth was still a very solid driver. I know it’s a business and timing and sponsorship is everything, but that just seemed dirty all the way around.

Matt Kenseth is a real one.
In 2001 I believe Carl drove a truck that I crewed on at I-70 speedway, in the world cup races. He was definitely a different kind of guy. I was getting ready to change tires and he kinda knocked me out of the way so he could do it. He and I had a good laugh about it. Anyway on the first lap of the feature coming off of turn 2 he got into one of the other fast trucks and caused a wreck. After the race he went over to apologize and the guy wasn't hearing any of it. Carl felt bad the rest of the night. Just a little story about my experience with Carl, he really is a great guy.

My favorite memory about Carl Edward's is him getting knocked on his ass by Kevin Harvick. Tried to intimidate the wrong guy that day.

I can't think of many drivers that haven't wanted to kick Brad's ass over the years. When I think of who had it out for Brad, Carl comes to mind. The fact that neither got hurt during their on the track tussles amazes me because those got ugly.
