What I will say is. 1. I've never had these issues with my heels slipping or the other problems stated, because I've always had my shoes professionally fitted, 2. I have NEVER done up my shoe laces this way, just the standard way I was taught when I was a wee nipper and 3. Personally, I deliberately DON'T thread my shoe laces at the top eyelet because I prefer free motion from the step-off, can't stand my heels being buried in the back of my shoes. But on a side-note, the presenter is cute.
My Nike running shoes kept coming off my foot whenever I ran in really fast speeds. So this is really helpful for someone who runs really fast. I get why you wouldn't need this advice. When I'm jogging it fits just right
Thank you Coach Morgan for this demo. Your instructions were clear, and simple. I just got a pair of Books in the mail today (never ran in Brooks), and thought they were too small. However, once I did the “heel tap” I had enough space b/w the toe box and my big toe. What a difference these minor iterations make ! 😊
I run a lot because of being in the military. I had pain on my foot so I went to a shoe store that measured my feet, the lady did this method of tieing my shoe and It was so comfortable. I’m back here watching this vid because I forgot how she did it. Glad I found this. Thanks

This was a game changer for me. Thank you Coach Morgan and @therunexperience. 29 miles, 5.7k ft vert today, and my Hokas fit perfectly today. Locked in!
I am so glad that I found this video! I have wide toes and a small heel. As a result, all of my shoes slip at the heel, leading to incessant blisters. This trick really helps, thank you!
A few years ago a shoe store guy showed me this knot and changed my life. I’ve only ran in either brooks and ASICS since then but it has worked for all the shoes I’ve used. I highly recommend if you can use this knot, try it out even if you don’t think you need it, it might help.
Lace tying tip: Loop one lace around the other and bring it underneath itself, in the start of the knot (ie. don’t cross the laces over each other, as the first step). Then make your loop and tie around it as you normally would. It keeps laces tied like double knotting, but is easy to untie.
That was so cute, I want to get a cat now! I started using the runner's knot last year, and it really does make a major difference in keeping my feet secure, and not moving around. Thank you for this informational, and adorable video!
🤯 thought some level of foot movement was something I’d have to put up with. Tried this knot and it improved an already well fitting shoe. Foot movement kept me from really pushing my pace. Can’t wait to test this on the road. Thank you for the video.
UA-cam taught me the runner's knot a couple years back - definitely a game-changer for some shoes that just wouldn't otherwise work! Glad you're putting it out there as many still don't know about it. What's weird to me is that some running shoes out there are still being made without the extra eyelet. Not many, but they still exist!
Thank you for putting this out. I think we have very little demo about the runner's knot and I don't know why. Hopefully, this reaches a lot of runners. This is a game changer when I discovered this.
I haven't had issues with my road shoes but on trails, because my shoe strikes the ground at many various & unpredictable angles I've felt some concerning movement within my shoes. I had recently watched this video & yesterday did hill repeats at a park with a lot of roots, rocks, & unsteady gravel so I gave it a try & it felt great. I felt more stable in my shoes, almost like being in a pair of hiking boots. Thanks Coach Morgan.

Also when you tie your shoes cross them twice instead of once before making your loops. When you do it this way you will find that by doing the extra crossover and then pulling tight, the laces won't loosen before you make your bow. If you only cross them once, as most people do and you did in the video, the laces loosen before making your bow.
Funny enough went online looking for ways to tie my new walking shoes since I actually went and bought a high quality, expensive, pair. Going to be going on a long walking tour in Europe so I want to be comfy and good on my feet. I found I had the same issues with my feet sliding forward as I am walking prior to this upcoming trip and figured I may be tying my shoes incorrectly. Tried the method in the video, since my shoes have the same extra holes, and suddenly my shoes stay where they need to be and my feet are not sliding forward. Great method for anyone walking or running.
Yep, I've been using the runner's knot for a while now. As long as the laces are long enough (the ones that came with my Sauconys are a bit short), it works great.
I used to have knee pain, I started to run with Altra a couple of years ago. I run 2600 km (1600 miles) this year (and 72000 m of vert), I do not go back to regular shoes. And just before XMAS my 8th pair of Altra arrived today in the mail (Olympus 4)... can't wait to give them a try.
@@YTSuxAxx If you’ve ever seen a duck foot, that’s pretty much what my feet look like. I have an extremely wide toe box, because I ran around barefoot till I was like 10, and a very narrow heel. Also, “modern” is subjective :p
Hi...thanks for the great tip on how to tie your shoes, but in 2002 Bruce Fordyce published a book Marathon Runners where he demonstrated 4 different ways to tie your shoes for say blisters or black toenails...I totally agree that the way you tie your running shoes makes a big difference!
I feel all smug because I’ve been doing this for years! The other thing that I swear by is slathering body glide all over my feet for long runs. It’s like magic. Your cat is a star!
the most important thing is to free the toes and skirt the ankle moderately tightly to prevent slippage. so the ideal tie is an A or an inverted V shape along the laces.
Absolutely, completely agree. I've been a runner for over 30 years and I've always tied my laces the traditional way. Never had any issues with my heels slipping or whatever other things the presenter has stated.
Runners knot also helps me to have my longer hikes easier. The extra eyelet also has its name of saying heel lock. Even if I don't have a heel lock, I still make the heel lock out of the existing knot. But heck when there are arch supported shoes and I do this. It feels definetly annoying and weird at same time.
I use the Lock Laces brand when the runner's knot isn't quite getting the job done with heel lock. I have a pair on my Vihos and Superior 4.0s. They help give a great hold.
For once, I’m watching one of your videos and I’m not learning anything 😀 It’s particularly useful when trail running and, in any other situations, you don’t need to tie the shoes so tight
On some of my shoes I have caterpy non-tie laces (not affiliated - I found them at the exhibition of the Amsterdam marathon 2 years ago, and bought a pair.. tried them out and went back the same day to buy 3 more pairs for my other shoes) and on others I use the runners knot.. I only get blisters on my toes on the shoes that are "my size" so I usually have to buy a full size bigger than normal, and that's with absolutely every brand and shoe that I've tried so far. edit: if there are any strings attached, the cat will play with them.. (same here)
That's funny I was literally looking at that extra hole on my trail shoes a couple of days ago and thinking to myself that it must have an actual purpose, but I never got around to looking it up, then this came up in my feed
Even if you straight lace them to the top, these holes provide important ankle support.Keeps your shoe from rolling during high impact lateral movements. This is just an improvement to the original lace design.
on a different subject, if you are having trouble with your shoes coming untied, try changing the way you tie your shoes. The loops should go across your foot (left to right) not up and down (toe to heal). this creates more friction and will help them stay tied.
I've known of this trick but have been stubborn and not done it. But now I wanna see if it helps out with muscle soreness. And yeah, my right heel slips around in the shoe unless I tie my shoes pretty deliberately.
My ankle was hurting today on my Run I stopped half way round to adjust my show and took the lace out of the top holes and I was better for it and ran more comfortably it's only my right ankle that does not like laces at the top hole
I’ve been tying my running shoes like that for the last 35-40 years. Trained and ran 12 marathons and never a problem!

The runners knot does help a lot, but I wouldn't say it works on every shoe, sometimes the fit of a particular model just doesn't suit your feet 👍🏃
It won’t work on the Nike Adapt BB 2.0 (self-lacing shoes)

I did this on one shoe and left the other how i normally tie it. WOW mind blowing ! I’m never running without my shoes tied this way. Thank u !!!!!

It works for my shoes! One size down was a bit tight, one size up and there is slippage. This method had just solved my problem.

This was amazing, and so well-explained. Thank you!!

Just thread your laces through the standard way. This 'fancy' technique ain't gonna make you run faster and it's not going to solve your injuries.
My dad thought me about this knot a couple of years ago. It changes everything!
