    Great day out mate. Used to fish Werribee South a lot back in the day, and March and April were always great months for good size flathead in close. They loved that imitation prawn!

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah it sure was a good day and your 100% right between March and May seems to be the best time for flathead around this area. Lots between 40 and 60cm. They seem to shut down a little just after winter. I like trying to catch them on all different types of lures and plastics to make things interesting. Those 3D prawns have a big hook on them like a size 5 snapper hook, so i wasnt sure how they would go, But they did great. Not even working them and no scent just letting them drift. And you know it needs to be a decent size fish to take a hook that big, ill give them a shot next time im out again as they worked great. As always thanks for your comment,

    Great video Alan, I love to fish with lures it's my favorite method. That snook was awesome! (I have never caught one) I would like to head out that way sometime but it might take some planning as it's a bit of a drive.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 роки тому

      Thanks Paul, yeah catching big snook are awesome. When you frst hook them they go for a big run that peels a bit of line, then the settle down. They also have a habit of pulling hooks right near your boat or kayak or shredding the line with there sharp teeth. But lots of fun. The Savage 8cm curl tail in motor oil has been the plastic catching heaps of them, so maybe give that a shot aswell.

      Hi Les, im not 100% sure with the snook. I've caught plenty of them but never taken one home to eat. I usually put them back or give them to my mates to eat. I've had plenty of people tell me if they are prepared properly they are good to eat and others who swear they are only good as gummy shark bait. Hey Alan, great video as always. Saw the tips for catching snook on your website and says medium retrieve. Would you wind steadily or mix it up a bit. I will be land based as kayak is still on my wish list.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 роки тому +1

      Hi David, thanks for watching. I have caught heaps of snook lately on plastics and hard body lures. With the plastics I have found that they often take it on the drop within seconds of it hitting the water. If you notice in this vide, I cast let the plastic sink for a few seconds and then was on without really working it. Otherwise Just a slow roll does the trick. With hard body lures I find a real a slow or medium slow roll and throw in the odd pause works well. Land base they'll often grab them at your feet. Hope that helps and good luck out there

      Hi Ahmad, when In a kayak Im always looking for conditions under 10-15 kilometers, with low swells. Ideally the wind coming from behind you out to sea, this is what calms the swell down and flattens things out. Eg If I was fishing in Altona the best conditions would be below 10 kilometers with the wind heading towards st Kilda. I use meteye to help identify the wind strength and direction. Hope that helps, let us knwo if you need a few helpful links.

    Hi Alan. Just watched this video & another you has showing all the variety of plastics & lures. I've just purchased my new fishing kayak this week & went out for a test run late yesterday. Used bait & caught one flathead in the shallows & missed a couple of other fish. I caught the flathead slowly rolling the bait in. Hence thinking soft plastic will be better. I live in Noosa & fish the river, Lake Weyba and creek. Any tips for a beginner using plastics & or lures is appreciated. Thanks.

      Hi Anthony. Congrats on the kayak purchase, its a wonderful recreational actvity. Here is a good video I created on the basics of using soft plastics which you should find helpful ua-cam.com/video/VEXa7FMDf_Q/v-deo.html This one is also really helpful for bginners to learn how to read the conditions ua-cam.com/video/3ZsRheYzpgQ/v-deo.html The trick with soft plastics is work them slow, use a little bit of scent like sfactor if things are slow and keep persisting. The fishing will get eaier and more consistent as the water temperature warms up

    Great session, you seem to like it glassed out? Not saying i dont enjoy like that but usually when it's glassed i tend to forget about fishing and go wandering lol my general break of point is 25km wind and this also depends on whether it's onshore or offshore and distance from land structure, but in general an onshore wind is better water to be out in, if you get the wind at you tail when heading in it can get pretty uncomfortable in following seas in a pedal kayak. Anyway great session keep them coming 🖒

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks Peter, its a really good observation that you make. I completely agree that the wind can be a lot more productive. Some of my best snapper sessions ever have been in stronger offshore winds between 15 and 20 kilometer winds. Its just that wind and lumpy conditions make for terrible quality videos. The audio gets all distorted and often your bouncing around which makes it not so great to watch as a viewer. Over time I have become a lot more aware of what conditions create good vids. I have had some completely glassed out conditions that have been completely dead for fishing. I remember a session last year was the calmest day I can ever recall not a ripple on the water for hours. Didnt catch a thing until the wind eventually picked up. Thanks as always for your comments and advice !!!

    • @petereaton6740
      @petereaton6740 4 роки тому +1

      @@fishingmad lol@me i didn't really give any consideration to recording, definitely wind play havoc on audio and yes lumpy conditions doesn't make the best quality video 😮 when fishing there are lots of conditions that dictate your catch eg: dirty water is no good for sqid yet excellent for whiting, windy (or lumpy) conditions make for excellent whiting also provided you can still feel the bite, when glassed out there are several species to catch if they are around but if you make a good burely using tuna oil and place a pot over the side this will bring gars around, if you don't mind the bones or butterfly them they are one hell of a nice feed and they make excellent bait even live bait but break their beak off gars are great as you don't have to look for them, they will find you with the right burely 🖒 good backup fish, i always carry my burely pot and a tub of chicken pellets and tuna oil in my fron hatch lol

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 роки тому +1

      Awesome, thanks for your reply. Yeah I have had some amazing days on the water where the footage came out terrible due to wind and lumpiness and I never uploaded even though I was tempted too. ( I value my watchers and wont upload vids that have bad quality or no catches, I know many others who would post anything ( seen so many vids lately with no catches or just tiny fish ( where is the value for your followers ). You make some excellent points about certain conditions predicting your fishing ability on the day such as dirty water, tides etc. All very good points !!! Your right about calm conditions and berley, for fish like gars. Something ive never really done a lot of ( prob cause I enjy drifting and get less sea sick that way ). but certainly some great points to take onboard

    Hi, are you using the hook2 x4 sounder? Have you had any problems with it if it is???

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Brett. Yes in this vid I was using the Hook 2 4 x sounder. Its a pretty good sounder when you consider they only cost $100. The only main issue was It wont ready properly in water depth under 3 meters. Just get a choppy screen. Other then that it was pretty good for depth, temperature, and marking up schools of fish. It has a small transducer so your not going to get super accurate fish reading but it was a fine choice for the kayak. Im in the process now of upgrading. Hope that helps.

    • @bretteather6478
      @bretteather6478 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks, I just took mine out for the first time today. Like you said at first I drifted the shallows and it was under 3 meters and the screen was all over the shop. I then moved to deeper water and it was fine. Not bad for the price and a bit off a fill in until I upgrade to a bigger boat 👍
