  • If you have Parkinson's, boxing is a wonderful metaphor for fighting back against the symptoms and is a perfect form of exercise for all genders and ages. But there's an element to the sport that you need to know that can hurt you! And it's not about getting punched in the nose. In this video I discuss the trip (the problem) and the fix.

Very good video. Balance exercises actually improves the brain (grows brain cells) as well as punching bag etc

I have Progressive MS but weirdly decided to act on a desire to learn boxing after the symptoms started (I’m weird 😅) Thank you

My husband is suffering from parkenson deseas for the last 8 years. Now his age is 57. His main issue is stepping and right hand movement. What will we do. Please suggest us.

Hi there. Sorry to hear but you both can still live well and happily. For walking, tell him to lead with the edge of his heel and bring his sight line up, not down. "Raise the gaze, feel the heel and swing the wing." Wing of course refers to the arm. PD can make things we learned to do without being taught, difficult. Getting out of a chair, rolling over in bed, walking etc. Break them down, figure out the best way to do them, and practice. Hope that helps.

Problem is a stretch at the end isnt enough. You are facilitating pathologic movement patterns for a Parkinsons patient like that which is a bigger neurological impact on movement and posture than a stretch. I am working on how to approach parkinson boxing right now and imo we have to redefine posture more upright with slightly retracted shoulder blades. Ots worse for boxing but the adl transfer for a patient is better.

Keep doing your research. There's been plenty to of independent studies that validate boxing as a great mode of exercise to help reduce and manage the symptoms. Plenty of empirical evidence as well on UA-cam. I've been preaching the importance of posture, thoracic extension/rotation and my take on "ground zero" for years. I'm glad you're doing work in this field, but you seem like you're just getting started but are motivated to participate in the discussion, which is welcomed. I'm curious as to your background, do you have any scientific or physiological/neurological based training? Keep digging but please be judicious in your postings if you're a newbie. We need more curious folks like you, but you need to do more exploring on research that is currently available via a simple Google search. Search Rock Steady Boxing and I'm sure you'll find some useful info.
Also, you should do a deeper dive into PD and explore the cost/benefit results of movement based disciplines. It's hard enough to get PWP to engage an exercise program without folks online telling them boxing is bad. Just IMHO after doing this for some 20 years. You may note that your comment ticked me off a bit. I welcome you to continue the discussion here.

@@SmartXPD my post may have been perceived rude. Wasn't the intent. It's not my first language. i did not mean to discredit boxing for Parkinson ,it's fantastic like you wrote with tons of evidence. Great post you wrote. My experience just is that Parkinson boxing profits a lot from changing posture adapting it to the pathology. I worked with advanced Parkinson were classic posture would excacerbate pathologic posture & problems while adapted posture more karate like eliminated that problem. Only have anecdotal evidence for that. Thx for the in depth answer

Thanks for your reply and clarification. Yes, advanced stages makes things quite difficult. There are definitely things about boxing that I'd avoid in the advanced stages, especially postural. And for my clarification, most of my videos are for the more vast population of PWP who are still relatively functional without too much balance or postural impairment. Maybe I should consider focusing a bit more on advance stages, I'll take that into consideration. Thanks!
