My mother's family got out of Harlan alive. They just picked up and left one day and moved to Cincinnati and from there to Baltimore. Mom joined the WACs went to Germany after the war. She had her sights set on a college degree on the GI Bill having been the only one of her siblings to have graduated from high school. After graduating from Loyola she met an extremely dark complected native Hawaiian musician/ war hero. They're in the same grave at Baltimore National Cemetary. Dad got a 21-gun salute as a member of the esteemed 442 Regimental Combat Team. The "Go For Broke" monument in LA's Little Tokyo has his name on it. ~
Dang, Katie, you nailed that song !! I'm so impressed right now! You two never sounded better. and you seemed more animated and into this song, it seems to me. Great job !!
I was blown away and teared up listening to your voices. There so beautiful!!! I was raised in Missouri and Oklahoma and your song reminded me of my elders who are all passed on. It reminded me when I was in the Ozarks with my grandparents.
This song is one of my all-time favorites and you sing it very well! The history of Appalachia is incredibly interesting and the two of you are gifted in your ability to share it!
Another of my favorites, too! LOVE your version of it! We first heard it by Patty Loveless and fell in love with it the first time we heard it. So happy you all recorded it. GREAT job!!
I had never heard this song before, and my Momma's people are from Harlan. You all sang it beautifully. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us and giving us a look into our mountain heritage. I hope you know what a blessing you are! :) 💗
Listened to this on my drive in to Tallahassee this morning. Had never heard it before - as is often the case I don't study the lyric to a song on first listen. Hearing it gave me the impression of someone visiting, falling in love, and not leaving a small town, what with the snippets of lyric I caught over the engine and winds. Went back and read the lyric. Interesting how some things come clear across, even if it isn't exact. I love y'alls take, especially after listening to the solemn original. Upbeat, house-of-the-rising-sun canter, gives it some blossom in the cheeks. Real pleasure listening to you two lately, thanks for sharing.
Your parents must be so proud. What kind, fine, young ladies, full of talent, obvious hearts full of goodness. You’re truly a breath of fresh air, this world needs more young people like you. I always make a point of checking out a couple of your videos with my coffee before I start my day.
This song save me from killing myself in 2021, brought me much Hope, which Hope and comfort is priceless , like the love of God priceless, thank you Presley girls. I am a big fan Lord willing it is a dream of mine to meet y’all someday if not all the best and God bless John nighthawk out.
There is a hillside graveyard in Harlan County, where some of my loved ones are laid to rest. When I hear that part of the song it can really bring a tear to my heart.
My great grandparents were Harlan coal miners. They came here to N.C. to help rescue some trapped miners and ended up staying here. My great granddad was later killed in another explosion in the mine. You both do an amazing job with this song!
This is really good. I've just been listening to all the different ... recordings? of this song tonight By all the different artists from Patty Loveless to Bent Mountain. But your all's performance of this song is outstanding as one of my favorite of all of em. And even without a fiddle. You sang it on point.
Katie’s voice gave the “haunting quality necessary for the lyrical necessity” unfortunately Corries beautiful voice was almost negated by her voice being almost a whisper” ! Still a wonderful rendition of this great Appalachian song. Thank you Ladies! Great Talent from a wonderful family!
@Ryan Yeager Nope! Just a 71 year old follower of Appalachian music and a former musician! I believe the reason Cory’s voice was reduced was microphone placement! She has a wonderful voice!
I watched this a couple weeks ago, never heard it. One day Im humming it and couldnt find it so I googled the lyrics and found out it was a Patty Loveless song. Been listening to it on repeat and now Ive found your video again and you sound sooo good😊 Katie I missed you and so glad your back and little Ira❤
My grandfather worked at a sawmill in Harlan in the 1930's. It was a logging camp with a company store and all. He used to tell a story about buying a sewing machine for my grandma at the company store. He stayed at the logging camp through the week and walked several miles home each weekend. He was so angry that the company store charged him "carrying charges" for the sewing machine. I suppose it's what we'd call shipping and handling these days. He told them what do you mean carrying charges? I carried that on my back across the mountain myself!
there is something different about this video than your others ones. The accoustics seemed to capture your voices better. Would love to hear an arrangement of this song where Katie has a fiddle solo. I admire your hard work ladies. Glad i found your channel.
Darrell was always a master, but he became a legend to me with that Down To The River video after Guy passed. Just a solid dude, think he got outdone on this one though!
