Amazing Turkish Road Trip! (Istanbul to Izmir) 🇹🇷

It was a great experience to be able to discover the Turkish countryside! I highly recommend doing so, although the tolls are quite expensive!

I cross that road multiple times. It is really nice highway..
you enjoy driving
having amazing clean rest stops.
for me I prefer to stop in Yalova or in Bursa there will be more things to see and to do.
Road tolls yes they are high especially if you come from Istanbul using Osmangazi bridge.
In my last visit from izmir to bursa I paid around 390TRL.
Last thing, police check points it's normal between big cities.

If you're not in a hurry, you can avoid most of the tolls. And still be closer to the country. However, almost double the driving time.

Do you realize that you stopped at Nicea? Iznik is modern day Nicea which is the site of the First and Second Councils of Nicaea (the first and seventh Ecumenical councils in the early history of the Christian Church). You should have gone to the ruins.
The police checkpoints were to enforce travel restrictions due to the COVID lockdown. You needed to have a legitimate reason to travel outside your province.

Female, solo traveler from California. Arriving in Istanbul this weekend, and planning on renting a car mid week to drive to Izmir. Aside from all the tolls, do you think there will be any hassles from the police checkpoints, which you mentioned occur about every half hour? Thanks for any input.

I would recommend having your passport and VISA with you at all times, but other than that you should be good! The drive was fun! Enjoy yourself!
