Ken - Great work! Looking forward to the next install. Hopefully its only Summer fun keeping you from finishing. BTW - next time you are at Michael's, Jo-Ann or Hobby Lobby, go to the T-shirt paints and look for a product called Tulip. It comes in black, and is an excellent medium for light blocking.
If you research the studio model it was painted with different shades of white with very light grey panels randomly done. They did not use any washes to highlight the panel lines and there was no other weathering done to the studio model. Also for future reference, an type of CA glue will cause the fiber optics to become brittle and break at the point it is applied. Best thing for gluing in your fiber optics is canopy glue. It takes time to dry but you won't have any issues in the end result. By the way dont use a glue gun either as that will melt your fiber optics.
Are the Resistors added in Series or Parallel to the Micro LEDs? Did you use a Resistor for each LED or one per circuit? Thanks, Great Vid Series, I'm getting ready to build one.
Hi Ken, plan to do this nice destroyer next year and watch your video ta have tips and tricks, very usefull !! I think i will use rgb led strips with Bluetooth remote and power with usb power bank in order to adjust luminosity and colors ! Also use fiber optic mostly 0.5mm maybe 0.25 or 0.75mm (standard diameter) What do you think with your exp ?
Thanks very much! The mushrooming process is where you expose the end of the fiber to a flame or heat source. The fiber responds by expanding (just the end) and it looks like a mushroom. When you thread the fiber through the hole the mushroomed head won't go through. People generally glue the fiber in place and cut of the mushroom, flush with the drill hole. In my case I'm pulling the fiber all the way through and keeping the mushroomed end and using it to fill the drill hole almost perfectly. Hope that helps! Watch the 6:00 mark of this video - I had a quick example here: ua-cam.com/video/p3Ec3JbPCtQ/v-deo.html
Hi Ken just watched your all your videos as I have just started one of these myself, you have given me some great ideas, but I think you are getting you metric and imperial sizes mixed up a bit, you are using 0.03mm? fibre optic but drill a 7.9mm hole?. This would be a 5/16th hole for something less than 1/64th. Most fibre optics for model side windows on these kits would be 0.25mm - 0.5mm , with drill bit size 0.3mm - 0.55mm. Hope this helps.
I'm thinking of getting this as my second kit. Do you think it would be a waste to get this and not light it? I was thinking of doing it with paint (white-ish paint for the windows) but I'm not sure yet. Cheers.
They look nice either way. In my opinion this model was meant to be lit. But it's a project. I'm still working on mine and the fiber has taken a very long time which I am reviewing in my next video, but I'm almost there. It's a beautiful model, and I am sure it would look just as nice not lit. I've seen some not lit that look great!
Hey, I need some help, I'm pretty unfamiliar with electrical stuff, but anyways. I bought a 12V power supply and a bunch of 3mm LEDs for another project, but it instantly burns up the LEDs, what else do I need?
I'm no expert, but you need to add resistors to them. Ask your hobby store guy(or Radio Shack if you have one) how to calculate what size resistors you'll need to use. Then your LEDs will last a lot longer. Good luck.
hi ken, love your videos on this built.. may I ask when is the next coming up? I hope to see how you magnetize the top section to reach out for the battery inside?
and one more question,, i work on a similar project ,, can you open the ship after finishing the modell ,, (for repare the electronic) if yes , how did you realice it ?
I'm thinking of using the low heat hot glue gun that they sell in the Model Railroading supplies. Woodland Scenic product. I'm going to go slow and mix up small batches of epoxy glue and secure my fiber optics.
yeah the glue that you want to use I got this from another UA-cam channel with it or he's a Master model maker is the pvt and that won't mess up the fiber optics you gotten a bottle that would do all your outfits for about 8 bucks Amazon
The color is perfect. Definitely going to use that on my next one.
Not wanting to tell any one what to do but make sure u wash the plastics before painting to get rid of any release agent. lovely ship and great work.
Ahh man, all the work you put into this so far. You really need to finish it 😉

I would love to see this finished product, I'm currently building my own Zvezda Star Destroyer
Ryan Ringler I bought myself this model earlier this year and will be putting together at some point. Looks very good.
pro tip : watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Caiden Roberto Yea, been using Flixzone for since november myself =)
very nice update, looks good with the smds in the hangers
Thanks for the feedback. Taking much longer than I hoped, but it's a process, right? Thanks for watching.

Thank you for your videos and the details you go into. Sure helps.

Nice work so far, any updates?
Looking good ! nice tips on the paints. What exactly do you mean by mushrooming the ends of the fiber optics ?

Thanks very much. Let me take a look at the tools, etc and make any necessary adjustments in annotations. I appreciate the feedback.
When can I see the finished product?
Never finished with part 5?

Very nice build. Have you ever thought of using EL Wire (Electroluminescent) for some of the lighting?
hi, nice work,, one question, im not shure, what color the led in he hangar have ,,, are the blue or cold white ?
Hi, I'm so sorry I never saw this post. It was cool white.
and one more question,, i work on a similar project ,, can you open the ship after finishing the modell ,, (for repare the electronic) if yes , how did you realice it ?
Handy - he is going to use small magnets to hold the rear top on so that he can access the wiring.
Updates please!
Brutal build.
if you add a potentiometer (variable resistor) to the LEDs you can dial them in perfectly
So when is the next update? I'm dying here...great work!
Anyone know how to make custom start up module for lights and sound? Alarm sound 3x, then sectional light up, then engines with sound...
When is the next vid
Mineshafter Gaming when I finish installing the fiber. I had to order more. Hopefully soon. Thanks for following.
Use white glue on the fibers. CA glue destroys fiber optics!
Thanks for the tip. So much for a Hobby Store giving advice.
I work at Hobby Town and not every knows about fiber optic cable. You can use epoxy glue on it or white glue but never super glue or model cement.
Michael, will hot glue damage the fiber?
