      After Skyrim, and with mods like Inigo, Improved Serana and quite a few other Follower mods like Khajiit will Follow, I thought it was going to be so much better in Starfield then Skyrim and they were going to be at least much closer to the modded followers.... I was so wrong lol. All of the only 4 followers that are worth really having are all your co-workers, none of them, even Andreja which sounded like she would be the follower ok with getting their hands dirty with thievery and what not. ALL of them will disown you like a bird dropping the misfit loud birdling out of a 500ft nest for even thinking of stealing some food. Even ESO has done followers better then Starfield, and there is not even romance options with any of them, though there is issues with ESO followers that I don't like either but I can at least like them and want to keep them around like Ember...

    My two biggest concerns:
    1. Moving forward, Bethesda might put less investment into the initial "vanilla" release of their games, and focus more on their own paid Creations. For TES 6, how much content will we receive via micro transactions that we would have otherwise received by purchasing the game outright? What impact does the potential loss of direct sales from Gamepass have on these decisions? Did any content for Starfield get shelved in the initial release because they decided to release it as a standalone paid creation?
    2. Is the revenue split for paid mods fair for the independent / verified modders? I am not at all against paying for top tier quality mods put together by smaller teams, as it could mean the creation of more high quality mods. I just want to make sure it's a good deal for the modders and creates the best incentive for them to invest in building awesome stuff.

    • @GophersVids
      @GophersVids  18 днів тому +59

      I am somewhat worried about the first point too. I'm generally going to look unfavorably on anything that costs money coming directly from BGS if I feel like it should have been in the base game. In the case of Starfield I don't see that yet. But for example, if they released a 'creation' that improved Space Combat by adding Joystick support and tried to charge for it, I'd be LIVID.
      However I don't mind paying them for Shattered Space. I am OK with that not having been in the base game for example. The same was true even for small DLCs like Automatron for Fallout 4. That was 'big' enough, and 'new' enough for me to feel like it was OK.

    • @Morg2851
      @Morg2851 18 днів тому +3

      I worry about that too, but after they expanded the studio they are in a better position to continue developing content for their new, big releases. Imagine Skyrim coming out today, with that kind of success, they would make way more stuff than 2 expansions. They set themselves up for doing just that. The only thing I feel has been "cut" from the game, because it would benefit a lot from it, is a proper survival mode with fuel, oxygen and all that. Base Starfield doesn't have a lack of content, it's a big game.
      If they decide to go mtx bonanza on TES6 it will be very unfair, at that point I'll sail for the high seas. We all know that game will sell a lot, who knows what executives will decide to do with it.

AND, the entire POINT has always been that the modding community shares with one another. That's why 90% or more of them still don't sell their mods. It's a win-win for everyone. Nobody (most people) is against modders making money. They are against Beth benefitting from others' work and the egregious prices. We will never see the likes of a Skyrim modding community again if every mod you need is sold. First of all, people would stop making mods that are solely designed as a requirement, something like SKSE or PO3's mods, because the mods on the store front can't require other mods on the store front from what I understand, so those types of systems and stuff are out the window. Then, pretty much no one can afford to mod a game if it's going to need like 800-1000 mods installed if they are going to cost $5 a piece. Then we will see BG3's mod tool kit and TW3's tool kit and then we'll see games like The Wayward Realms come out with modding support and everyone will just leave the scene and start the community somewhere else. I completely agree with you that this could destroy the "Community" we have surrounding these games entirely.

      I think there's a very good argument to be made for modders to not get paid at all.
      Modding has always been a hobby. The moment getting paid to make mods becomes the norm everything changes. We've already seen this with platforms like UA-cam.
      Sure, anyone can upload a video to UA-cam these days, but the content that gets the most views is the content being developed by entire teams who make boatloads of money from it. Long gone are the days when some of the most successful UA-camrs were the ones who were just having a blast doing whatever they wanted on film.
      We already have a way for people to make money modding. It's called game development, and it's exactly where many hobbyists used to end up back in the day. Some of my favorite mods and teams from the golden days went on to materialize as full feature games and studios..
      - The Desert Combat team helped develop Battlefield 2 and many of them went on to do some great work in the industry at large.
      - The Natural Selection team started their own studio, released a standalone sequel, and went on to create Subnautica.
      - Counter Strike/Team Fortress/DoD/Garry's Mod/DayZ/PubG which I think need nothing said.
      - IceFrog, and the creation of not only a full game but an entire genre from DoTA
      The more money there is tied up in modding, the harder it is for a normal person to make a successful mod. And the thing is, we know exactly what publishers and developers want - they want to charge us more and give us less. Bethesda want's to monetize mods so they can take a cut off of what is essentially free work. They want to double dip, and not only have their games be more popular and longer lasting because of modders, but to also make money from their creations. The moment that this trend sticks, you can guarantee that every other major player will follow and we'll suddenly have a whole mod economy largely driven by professional modders.

    I'm one of those weirdos that loved Starfield, but I really think corporate shot themselves in the foot with that paid Trackers Alliance: The Vulture quest mod. I don't mind them selling "official cosmetics", but quests that Bethesda make shouldn't be sold as paid Verified Creations - either make it an actual, complete smaller DLC like Automatron or Knights of the Nine, or make it free. That they're okay with just selling quest content as Creations is a worrisome sign that perhaps we'll no longer see those smaller, focused DLCs - it'll either be big expansions or... microtransactions like The Vulture.
    Other than that, I don't mind independent paid mods, especially considering that, as you pointed out in the video, some folks are trying to make a living off it and some have even created dedicated indie studios, like Kinggath and the Starsim folks.
    But back to the paid BGS quests issue... at least on Steam and even online, Starfield was slowly "regaining" good will and the reviews were climbing back up, especially after the May update. With these shenanigans, the reviews are deservedly going (massively) down again. It's like corporate just can't let the developers, who clearly care about the game and are clearly listening to feedbak, win...

    • @redwolfstudios5699
      @redwolfstudios5699 18 днів тому +5

      My biggest gripe with the tracker alliance stuff is... well aside from the fact that I feel like it was cut content from the game that they just wanted to sell to us.
      My real big gripe with it is that they've stated that they're looking at a model in which they will release more in the same vein... So instead of working on a smaller DLC based around the faction, giving us a solid questline of around 7-15 quests, new features like the ability to put prisoners in your brig on your ship and bring them in alive etc... instead of focusing on a small full DLC around bounty hunting, they'll release 1 quest at a time, here and there until they've got... what? 7-15 of them out anyway? So they are releasing this smaller DLC in .... chapters? Chapters that will likely all cost $7? So if they make 10, I'll need to pay $70 for this small DLC when all is said and done because it will be a quest bundle instead of a small DLC? Thats Bethesda straight up swindling us into paying waaaayyyyy more for a small DLC that should cost roughly $20-$40 at most.
      Then, on top of all that, they aren't going to let you buy $7 worth of credits whenever you need to buy a new "chapter" so you're gonna have to drop $10 to get the $7 worth you need which means I could potentially end up spending $100 to get it all..... hypothetically, based on the assumption they do 10.

It all started with the Creation Club for Fallout 4, where I honestly believe ALL of that content should have been covered in the Season Pass. I am low key convinced that THAT is the reason they came up with that term. To try to muddy the waters about the fact that it was ALL official DLC.

    Well, here is a story - I started modding Morrowind, went to Sims 2 and later Oblivion at which point I got good enough at what I did to go professional - have not made a mod since. I can get paid for the same work or not - the choice is obvious.
    If we want amazing, professional level mods than payed mods is the only way to get that, it's as simple as that - people with skills to pay the bills do need to be payed.
    The question is if Bethesda can create an echo system for that to happen - where customers feel secure, vendors are payed well and fairly and the devs listen to both... Because you can't do it without the core software owner being good and involved.
    If I'm given worse splits than Unity/Unreal/Daz/TurboSquid etc gives me, there is no point, if Bethesda keeps on breaking my mods - there is no point (all the place above take support responsibility after testing is done), if tools get screwed up and I don't get support - again I have better places to go.
    So this is in Bethesdas court - I have my doubts about their ability to run their game as content platform - the game is good enough but the company behind it has bad reputation for customer services... And a big one for being out of touch with reality and slow to react...
    We'll see - I'd love to see it work thou - just imagine what ever growing game with proper support and infinite professional grade content can look like!

    I like the updates and content BGS is putting out, but I don't like the method of delivery, and the pricing. They'll do bundles or special giveaways at some point, but I don't like the idea of them drip feeding bgs-made single missions, for lore integrated factions, at 7$ each(!), even if I like the stuff they are making like the vulture mission. At least they still make old school expansions. All the cosmetic stuff like the hab or plushies... not my jam.
    Also, I find the fact of them hosting 2 fan made patches fixing their bugs, in plain sight, hilarious.
    I found the creation store interface ok with a controller, a bit clunky with m&k. Liking a mod is only doable from the load order, convoluted. A shame they don't have video showcases in-game, some of them really need to show what they modify, like the mining one.
    With the game now handling plugins I'm having some issues with MO2 deactivating some plugins after closing the game, even if the savegame matches the load order. Maybe MO2 needs updating, maybe I'm missing something. Not using plugins.txt enabler anymore, only loading updated mods.
    Anybody else noticed the color filters are different? Or am I imagining it? I feel like I don't need normalized LUTs mods anymore.

      Bethesda cannot guarantee mods will work. That's pretty much part and parcel of what modding entails. It doesn't actually matter if it's paid for or not. They can only guarantee content that they themselves curate. As far as I can see, it doesn't matter that they at least curate who can make paid mods. Whatever those creators make is their responsibility rather than Bethesdas. However, I would expect them to at least support the content that they themselves create. ie. the stuff with the BGS logo on it. To my mind those are official DLC rather than mods, therefore they should be obliged to support them. Time will tell if that is the case. But the other stuff? I'm afraid you're at the mercy of the person/people who made the mod. It's up to them to guarantee it.

    I might be in the minority, but I have no issue with individuals or indie developer teams creating monetized content (like the Mining Conglomerate) IF they are able to maintain it for the lifetime of the game updates, AND the value is reasonable. $5.00 for new gameplay functions, quests, radiants, and RPG elements, I think is fairly reasonable (again, if something like the mining conglomerate is done well). That seems like a fair value to me on first impressions.
    However, I do not like the Bethesda official creations for two reasons:
    1. Microtransactions are the capitalistic nightmare that will make people look at gaming companies one day the way flight passengers look at Boeing nowadays.
    2. The cost you pay for what you get is never good. $5.00 for an armor set and gun? The base game is 70.00, it's just not reasonable. If Bethesda creations were more reasonable priced (eg $0.50 for an armor set and gun IMO is reasonable) I would have less of an issue with them.
    I think the best solution for this would be if all creations were community made and Bethesda just took a share of the profit for hosting the mod on their page and vetted the creators properly. People will still make free mods; it's never going to go away; but maybe something like the Starfield creations will incentivize people or even teams of people to make really impressive content (think Falskaar or Sim Settlements 2 type of content). But Bethesda really just needs to leave the making of content to the community.

    For the Gravis suit, I didn’t have to do anything except restart the game.

    "It has been 0 days since the last modpocalypse"
    Really though, I generally don't mind this TOO much. I appreciate that they specify which ones are BGS creations so that I know which ones not to buy, but ideally they would remove any and all BGS creations (or make them all free, but that's not happening) and just take a small cut of anything they host or that verified creators make or something. I'd rather my "creations" money go to indie creators and have BGS release DLCs or expansions that don't even have to be THAT big (think Automatron in Fallout 4). But I do recognize that BGS deserves at least some extra revenue for hosting these things and all that. I don't know what the perfect business model is for BGS to make money and still come out looking good, but it ain't this. But I'd still say this isn't the worst.

    Bethesda: Release a game that is so bad that it needs mods to be enjoyable.
    Also Bethesda: Pay us for mods

    i found my gravis suit without having to re-enable it thankfully, sucks that its a full suit and not armor, helmet, and jetpack slots. I kinda want them to give us more free credits for buying the game, and $7 for trackers or $6 houses, eyuck.

    I think the craziest part of this is that they gave console players 99gb of space to play with this time

    I also noticed if a mod causes the game to crash when it reorginises your load order it automatically deactivates the mods that caused the issue at least it did for me once the only time i had a pro0lem. I saw the mods were deactivated so reactivated them and it crashed again and they were automatically deactivated, I cannot remember what mod it was But it said i needed other mods that it relies upon or something. But the fact it isolates the offending mod is brilliant. No more deleting 10 mods at a time till it stops crashing then reactivating them one at a time till it crashes again to find the offending mod. That is how I used to do it. It took so long so I am happy they made that adjustment. Anyone else notice it?

    I think it's good, although it will make some drama between modders doing it for love and those in it for the money... but I think we'll get used to it

    I plan to wait until about 6 months after Shattered Space has been released. I figure by then patches and modders will have smoothed out the most egregious of the inevitable bugs and other bullshit. And by then Starfield just might be worth playing some more. Time will tell.

    Is this a Mandela Effect thing, or did Bethesda say that Creations are definitely NOT paid mods?
