The water probably never turned clear. If it was really a 30 year old damn, the amount of silt and mud that would be released is insane. So by the time the water upstream equals the water diwnstream, there's still be muddy water flowing, or the engineers shut the gate
30 years, this cant be possible. Plus this isnt the spillway. These are called flushing gates, they're meant to flush out the sludge, silt and debris from the lower ends of the water so that these things dont into the intake tunnel and then through the power generating units, as these things can cause damage to the rotors of the units. Ive worked at the powerhouse of a dam btw.
The way that sludge came out after all those years of inactivity🤷♂️😤it’s a testament to the quality of the dams building that it survived the tremendous amount of pressure
Opening the sauce gates really flushed out the silt build up behind the dam wall. Really helped in increasing the dam capacity to near where it was when constructed.
Ok, so I have watched this video numerous times. I just can't stop thinking about the pressure equalization that was happening here ! It appears that the dam had a square inlet and outlet. If so it makes me wonder if the underwater side was covered by a grate ? Or just the opening unimpeded ? If it was either..... anything near that intake would have been torn apart and completely dissipated. The pressure must have been amazing. I'm sure this video is nothing compared to being the person on that deck recording ! TY for the video !
When it starts with all that sludge coming out🤷♂️😳it just shows the raw power of water and the solid construction of the dam assuming it’s still working
For the people that don't know this is a Soluce gate To pass sediment through the dam. Which a lot of older dams are not built with Them. And the dam just fills up with sediment In barely any water.
I would have thought that it is essential to open these gates on a more frequent basis on the grounds of safety. That is to make sure they’re actually operational if needed in an emergency.
Just a little sediment build-up. That sediment can make a positive difference downstream if trapped and controlled. Dams trap sediment. Dams lose water storage due to displacement by sediment build-up. Periodic flushing is good for dams and would be better if the sediment outflow was controlled and put to use. This could help stop the loss of high quality dirt to the oceans and improve farmland. Is there cost involved? Yes! Is there also a cost in not doing this?
When someone go into the stall next to you and at first you think you can ease it out and not make a echo of an explosion, next thing you know your at that point of no return and it just lets lose.
Fine clay and silt builds up at the bottom of a dam, other stuff too, that cannot pass through the turbines or should not pass through the turbines. Dams are giant dirt traps.
Your witticism reminds me of this nerd I knew in grade school and he wanted so badly to be cool, he actually asked his mom if he could swear like all his friends. He somehow found a loophole and went running around saying "dam" this and "dam" that and it wasn't long before his newfound freedom was getting his ass kicked.
I can't believe these aren't tested on a regular basis. Every emergency system I've ever work with had to be tested regularly. Some things daily, some things weekly, others at least annually. Just to make sure everything works!
I just yesterday watched a video of a spillway being opened after 15 years. Similar effect, but not the same dam. Does this sort of thing happen often?
It depends on dam maintenance. There is sediment in the water that accumulates behind the dam over time. A well maintained dam will open their floodgates a few times a year to flush out the trapped sediment. But I guess in some other locations they don't do that, leaving a big pile of sludge oozing out when the gate is opened after a long period of time. If you want another example of sediment buildup behind a dam, lookup Condit Dam drain down. It was a 100 year old dam slated for demolition. As the water was going down, you can see the sediment collapsing.
@@campagnollo Yeah, now that I watched one more and more are showing in my feed. I just saw one where the water was pretty clean, so they must do it regularly.
When I look for videos of dam gates opening, I really love it when the video starts whit a dam gate opening, and not with some guy’s voice over saying some stupid shit like you know DAMS ARE IMPRESSIVE HUMAN MARVELS THAT HOLD WATER or something like that

@@gireeshkumar511 This dam is located in Jiroft, Iran

@@ec1628 Because holding a "phone" any other way is really hard. Blame the phone not the person. They're PHONES not cameras!

There is very little rain in this region of Iran, so after all these years, they opened the dam gate

Thanks for watching the video
Like you, I was really surprised when I saw this video. It's really unbelievable
Seeing the water escape through the cracks and holes on the platform is scary 🤯
Yeah, the guy who took this video - what was he thinking?
The moment that dude realizes he’s standing on a pressurized canister 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 maybe this ain’t that safe?
When the Taco Bell you had a few hours ago decides to exit your body.
The power of water is terrifying. In this case mixed with tons and tons of silt. Scary.
1. I'm surprised the gate would open after 30 years.
2. I would be even more surprised if it closed.

Its neither shit nor dirt. It is silt which is very rich in water and micro organisms which can be very nourishing to crops if used in farmland.
