10:59 I'm not exaggerating when I say that TV scene is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time, and a great example of how to give exposition in a way that's fun and engaging. The way it switches channels to form actual sentences while also obscuring the actual information is so brilliant

My favorite touch is that the zombies really do retain their basic personality traits. Phillip hated the loud noise. Pete met up with his friends at the pub. Ed just hangs out with Shaun playing videogames, and Barbara was completely passive until David yelled at Shaun

I always thought Barbara's reaction was just the loud noise of David's voice. Also, did Pete ever really have friends at the pub? I don't think that was really an established thing, I think it was just him following Ed to get him because he hated him so much.

Such a great reaction! Some trivia: When asked by an interviewer why they chose to have slow moving zombies instead of running zombies, Simon Pegg simply replied, "Because death is not an energy drink."
Many of the zombie extras are fans of Spaced, which also starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was also directed by Edgar Wright. They were recruited through the Spaced Out fan website.
Night of the Living Dead Director George A. Romero was given a private viewing of this movie near his house in Florida. During the scene in which Ed (Nick Frost) yells into the phone, "We're coming to get you, Barbara", Romero was oblivious to the fact it was a direct lift from his movie Night of the Living Dead, and only found out later after a phone conversation with Edgar Wright. He was so impressed with their work that he asked them to cameo in Land of the Dead as zombies.

‘Spaced’ was also co-written by Jessica Hynes, who played Yvonne in this movie.
Also, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright got the idea for the movie after the episode of ‘Spaced’ where Tim (Simon Pegg) was playing Resident Evil 2, and then had the dream about being in a zombie apocalypse.

There's also a reference to the running zombies from 28 Days in the news reports at the end of Shaun of the Dead.

Not quite a comedy, but really interesting horror satire can be found in "The Cabin in the Woods". Anyway, just a few suggestions for you.

The plan that Ed comes up with at the Winchester after Shaun gets dumped by Liz is actually a beat-for-beat summary of all the events that will go down the following day: "Have a Bloody Mary's first thing (the first zombie they encounter is named Mary), a bite at the King's Head (Phillip gets bitten in the neck), couple at the Little Princess (Liz is the princess, David and Di are the couple), stagger back here (they pretend to be zombies); bang! Back at the bar for shots (the big shootout in the third act). Watching Edgar Wright's films multiple times is pretty much a necessity due to the sheer amount of foreshadowing and hidden hints he hides in the script.
Glad to hear you enjoyed this one, it's pretty much a staple of modern British culture and ranked as one of our best comedy films alongside Hot Fuzz. You should definitely check out The World's End and complete the trilogy; it's not as popular as the other two, but I reckon it's one of the most underrated films to come out during the last few years and a really great conclusion to the trilogy

Shaun's friend who he runs into who leads the other group that's a mirror of Shaun's group is played by Jessica Hynes (although I believe she was Jessica Stevenson back then). Prior to Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes starred in a TV show called Spaced, so this was a bit of a reunion, and the way they're talking about things and catching up is a nod to the show they starred in together (which the British audience would almost certainly have been familiar with). Spaced had very similar humour to Shaun of the Dead in a lot of ways, but it was much more out there. Nick Frost also co-starred in Spaced, but Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes were the 2 leads.

Simon (Shaun), Nick (Ed) and Edgar (the director) had a sitcom on British TV called Spaced and although it was a surreal mix of everything they always loved to throw movie tropes in to the show and that is what gave birth to the Cornetto Trilogy. Shaun of the Dead plays on zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead, Hot Fuzz plays on buddy cop movies like Point Break, and The World's End plays on alien invasion movies like the Body Snatchers. The guys had so many silly ideas for each episode in the show that they basically just created a trilogy of movies where they could satirise each subject to the fullest.

My two favorite trivia things about this movie: Ed basically explains the plot of the movie when they're in the Winchester the night before everything goes down (We'll have a "Bloody Mary" alluding to the zombie in the back yard named Mary.) The other thing is when Ed asks "Are there zombies out there?" and Shaun tells him not to say that word... because they almost literally never use the word "zombie" in any zombie movies, at least the older ones. They always say things like "undead", "living dead", "infected", etc.

More fun and slapstick than horror! Great cast for a comedy! I luv Simon Pegg. Another movie with same cast and poking fun at aliens is "Paul". Would like to see your reaction to that! If you want a horror zombie movie World War Z is good. Or for more zombedy comedy zombieland is a hoot!😂 Great reaction Addie! You looked scared every now and then which is good for you but your smile was better! 😁 Luv ya Addie ❤💛

Another good one people seem to forget about is Peter Jackson's "The Frighteners" with Michael J Fox.

I think you're missing a fundamental aspect of what makes a zombie ... a zombie.

After Cornetto another Pegg/Frost movie is ‘Paul’ with a great cast including Jason Bateman plus some SNL alumni and voice work by Serh Rogan.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Everything about it is brilliant. Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and everyone else involved in this movie is a genius! You should watch the George Romero "Living Dead" trilogy which was the primary inspiration for this film! "Night of the Living Dead", "Dawn of the Dead", and "Day of the Dead". They are certainly scary and gruesome movies but they are also defining pieces of pop culture!

Interesting that everyone that stood in the way of their relationship or of Shaun becoming his own man and more responsible was eaten or became a zombie. Diane and David were anchors for Liz and David was in the way having a torch for Liz and trying to twist the knife when he thought they were over. Ed was the friend he looked after although he put him at odds with his roommate and Liz. His mom and his stepdad he had to let go of both of them as they both represented his past and not his future.

If you're going to finish the Cornetto Trilogy with The World's End, I suggest going back and reacting to Spaced, the BBC comedy series, with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and directed by Edgar Wright years before Shaun of the Dead. It has fourteen episodes split over two series (seasons) of seven apiece, and it's a real gem. Each episode takes its influence from a Hollywood movie and the Matrix-inspired episode was one of my favorites.

You really need to watch Paul which came out around 2010 staring the same duo, where they hire a campervan to tours the States, but end up meeting an escaped alien.

I have a really fun movie recommendation that is a little related. This was directed by Edgar Wright. My favorite Edgar Wright movie isn't part of the Simon Pegg series of comedies. It's a bit more of a serious action film, and is really fun because of Wright's directorial style and stylistic use of music. It's called Baby Driver. It's about a kid who is a getaway driver, but he has tinnitus, so he always has music going in his headphones, so the movie integrates what he's listening to into the action brilliantly.
