My mother became a Pediatrics nurse in the early fifties. She moved to Los Angeles for her first job. One day a small woman came into the hospital, a scarf around her head and dark glasses on, and asked for several orderlies to assist her in getting "a few things" out of her car for the children. She came in with hundreds of toys, crayons, coloring books, puzzles, games, candy, and other treats, and proceeded to spend the entire afternoon playing with all the children and reading to them. No entourage, no film crew, no publicity agents...Just Barbara Stanwyck on her own. My mother had been a fan of hers, but now became a huge fan of Barbara Stanwyck, the person. For the fews months my mother stayed in Los Angeles, Miss Stanwyck came on several occasions, always in the same quiet unassuming way, with toys galore, and seemingly with all the time in the world to spend with the children. Whenever we would see Barbara Stanwyck on the TV in later years, my mother always recounted this story with a mixture of awe and respect. A great actress and a lovely human being.
What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing, she really is someone I look up to especially when her life was not easy and had a lot of hardships. She had every right to be the most bitter woman ever with what she endured but she was the complete opposite. Amazing that she turned out the way she did, a very loving, one of a kind human being! Just love her. People just aren’t like her anymore. It’s very rare.
She deserved this accolade, for perseverance alone - the ‘most’ deserved? Of course not! She wasn’t known as the poor man’s Bette Davis for nothing - she was.
I was at this event and it was one of the most amazing nights of my life to see all these great people capped by the appearance of the great and legendary Barbara Stanwyck who was my godmother. She truly was an amazing lady and influenced me and my life in more ways than I can name. 21 years later, I still miss her very much. God Bless only the 3rd woman to receive this prestigious award. She was one of a kind.
Ladies & gentlemen, this is what grace, humility and class looks like! Miss Stanwyck was one of the greats from an era that can never be duplicated!! She made some great movies, but for me, her role as Victoria Barkley on The Big Valley was my favorite. Too bad they don't make em like this anymore!
I agree she was just 'swell' in every way. When she did her last though, in The Thornbirds, a filthy, nasty, horror of a human being, I knew she'd given the last of a really great performance in her career, it was just amazing.
Wow! What class and talent that woman had! I'm in tears now because her humble speech brought back so many memories and her closing prayer was so genuine. I loved Barbara Stanwyck in everything she did especially The Big Valley, Stella Dallas, Sorry, Wrong Number and The Thorn Birds. Just her last scene alone in the wonderful mini-series The Thorn Birds would establish her as a major, unforgettable actress. Miss Stanwyck won a well-deserved Emmy for that role as well as Emmys for The Barbara Stanwyck Show and The Big Valley. And at least The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had the sense to present her with a special Oscar before it was too late. One of my favorites of all time, I would love to have worked with her!
A really tough call that year for Emmy voters. Ann Margret blew my socks off with her powerhouse acting for "Who Will Love My Children" as a terminal cancer patient fighting time to find someone to look after her children before she dies. The miniseries did not have the pomp and circumstance of Thorn Birds. If I had to choose, I'd pick Ann Margret that year over Barbara. Again, a really tough call for Emmy voters. I think Stanwyck's standing in Hollywood swayed voters in the end.
She never received an Oscar because in order to avoid being typecasted she didn't sign with a studio. Stanwyck could play ditzy just as well as she could play intelligent and good just as well as she could play evil.
People are obsessed with who wins those dumb awards. The Oscars are politically driven rubbish. So many of the recipients over the years have been a joke compared to some of the "losers" who lost to them yet were easily more worthy winners.
A great actress, a wonderful human being, a star from beginning to end and, to tell it plainly, a woman of intelligence, elegant and simple. One of the best, truest acceptance speeches ever.
Simply a true LEGEND as an actress and as a lady, as she remembers the people who helped her along the path of her career. A truly great human being who has in the past entertained millions and will continue to entertain millions into the future. RIP Miss Stanwyck
I can't explain why Barbara Stanwyck is my favorite actress, above Davis, Crawford and Hepburn, but I know what I like. Her ability with comedy and melodrama and westerns and even musicals is extraordinary. She got better looking at she aged and here, she is gorgeous.
Wow, you answered fast. If you ever want to discuss Stanwyck or any other film icon, here I am. I loved "Sorry Wrong Number" too. Stanwyck believed she was cheated out of an Oscar for that, as well as for "Stella Dallas."
I happened to watch one of her movies back in the mid 90s just because it was on, and fell in love with her acting, she could do comedy, suspense, noir, western, tearjerkers with the best actresses and actors around, her slang dialogue was wonderful, witty and adorable. A true legend.
Top notch, class act, beautiful through and through, what a gem we are missing these days, thank God for film preservationist to keep all these great actors, actresses, and films for everyone to fall in love with, they didn't need a part two or nine lol..... Honest talent and greatness stand the test of time.... Be kind, be humble, Take care everyone and God bless.....
I think I’ve seen just about all of Barbara’s movies. Never get tired of her. She was a classy beautiful smart tough broad. My very favorite female actress who stands side by side with my favorite actor John Wayne.
America was fortunate to have such great talent.she definitely got your attention in all her movies.a very special woman on and off the stage.R I P Barbra Stanwyck..❤
Yes, she's amazing in "The Thorn Birds" and her final scene (the one you referred to) is heartbreaking and mesmerizing and so much more. She won an Emmy for that role, deservedly so.
And I believe it was when she won the Emmy for The Thornbirds she immediately said that the award belonged to Ann-Margret for the TV movie she did I believe entitled "Who Will Love My Children". They were both excellent.
Miss. stanwyck was my life long crush, what an exquisite beautiful woman, it's my dream and hope when I pass away that I meet her in heaven and spend eternity with that awesome woman..she is very missed..lua , Barbara..
One of the best actresses ever! Pure talent, strenght and beauty. I love her in every film she made but "Double Indemnity" I think it's her best performance.....best femme fatale I've ever seen!
It really is hard to choose : her four Oscar nominations I would rank as 1. SWN 2. DI 3. SD and 4. Ball of Fire; but to me who grew up in the sixties , my favorite is always her portrayal of Victoria Barkley
Doesn't she look incredible? This woman wasn't only a fabulous actor, but a national treasure. Anyone who's seen her films and been entertained and moved by them knows they've seen the best thing about the American film industry. I thank the Big Guy upstairs for giving us your films to admire, enjoy, and remember. RIP, lovely lady.

I just received your 'tip' about the movie. Many thanks! She was, as you imply, one of the most beautiful and compelling actresses. I recall her in "The Thornbirds"(?) and her scene "Kiss me. Kiss me on my lips." after the young priest had escorted her to her room for the night. What a sad film that was! Again thanks from Canada.
A truly wonderful woman and actress. How I miss the likes of her and her other great colleagues! Hepburn, Davis, Crawford, Dunne, Rogers, Colbert, Sullavan, Young. Cannot stop watching her films and marveling at her artistry. She makes everything look so simple! And what a lovely acceptance speech! Direct, honest, simple, totally from the heart.
In a league of her own. The G.O.A.T. Her ‘era’ was way before my time. But her talent transcends all eras and all ages. Absolute legend - love ALL her movies simply because she grabs your attention in whatever role she is playing, and you don’t want to stop watching. Not to mention she was stunningly beautiful.
Barbara Stanwyck was such an American classic. A superb actress. My favorite role of her's was in Stella Dallas. The scene of her watching her estrange daughter's marriage while biting down on a hankerchief always start the tears flowing. Her eyes glistening with tears is a true display of Miss Stanwyck"s great talent. A great actress in an era where acting was truly a great art. Barbara Stanwyck was a true American Icon.
An actress who could play any part: comedy; drama; westerns; mystery and suspense, you name. Very classy of her to give credit to the great director Frank Capra. Capra and Stanwyck made some beautiful films together and he was really the director you gave her the big breaks in her film career, as she graciously acknowledged in her speech.
Wonderful acknowledgement of our Creator at the end, with a simple statement of humility - and far more sincere than those who "thank God" oh so flippantly for their Peoples Choice Award. Miss Stanwyck is from a long ago generation where values like faith, loyalty and hard work were embraced and rewarded. I miss her dearly.
Rah! One who has earned the absolute right to be awarded this most coveted achievement award. She is magnificent. A brilliant performer. My mother, God rest her soul, was a great admirer of the legendary Barbara Stanwyck.
Quite incomparable then and now the talent this legendary actress had on screen. More's the crime the Academy couldn't get her across the line to win one of her 4 Oscar nominated roles at the height of her acting powers And what an actor. Let's not forget her stunning beauty, in a 100 years of Hollywood beauties, Babs is in my all time top 5 no problem. Still in love with her image, now isn't that a legacy she's left for the heavens. RIP Ms Stanwyck.

she deserved an Oscar for sure--but Oscars aren't everything--so many greats didn't get one--and so many who have gotten one are nearly completely forgotten!!
Barbara Stanwyck was called the Swiss Army knife among her peers: she could- and did- embody any genre, beit comedy, romance, drama, Westerns, Film Noir. Anything. Barbara Stanwyck was also a humble and benevolent soul. The camera captured her ineffable spark, her energy and fierce intelligence. Ms Stanwyck, we salute you.
From all accounts, specifically, interviews with co-stars and friends, Stanwyck was very gracious and supportive of young actors. Most significantly, in the case of William Holden, with whom she worked in the film adaptation of Odets' Golden Boy. Holden stated that the Studio was initially going to fire him when Stanwyck interceded on his behalf. It was the first major role for Holden and the start of a lifelong mutual admiration.

She was one of a kind and never made a fuss. She is greatly missed.
She likely doted on children because she was unable to have any of her own.

I love that the camera cuts away to catch Jimmy Stewart smiling when she's talking about Capra.

Barbara Stanwyck is a great example of how talent and mastery of craft have so little to do with an Oscar.
She never received an Oscar because in order to avoid being typecasted she didn't sign with a studio. Stanwyck could play ditzy just as well as she could play intelligent and good just as well as she could play evil.
