I would have preferred the Ollie & Dinah artwork on the hardback for the dust jacket. I’m frequently left underwhelmed by so many of the DC dustjacket designs. Still nice to have this run collected but it’s a steep price for overseas buyers. Thanks Omar for the detailed overview.
Hey Omar I want to thank you for doing such high quality reviews over and over again and clearly hitting all the right points on these collected editions without having to spoil all the juiciest most fun facts/ spoilers that are most enjoyed when discovered by myself on my own. Your knowledge of comics is so impressive and your tastes are so similar to mine that it allows me to relax and rely on your advice. I knew I had to have this Omni immediately when this was announced because an old friend I knew 5+ years ago whom was a diehard DC fan told me that this was his without a doubt most beloved comics run. I ordered this already and can’t wait to read it.
Great review. I can’t wait to receive my copy of this. I use to have the “Longbow Hunters” trade, which I loved. It bugs me that Black label has replaced the Vertigo logo on omnis like Preacher and Nancy Collins, Swampthing but, I don’t mind it so much on books like this.
I'm so fortunate that this came in and I have to say The Longbow Hunters miniseries sets the bar high and makes me want to keep reading this literal whale of an omnibus. Grell is the man. I will also pick up Green Arrow Year One when I get the chance too to explore Ollie's beginnings.
@@NearMintCondition I am too considering the availability of books these days. Proud to report its been fully read hopefully we get a Vol 2 solicited by DC to wrap up this amazing run by Grell.
I agree with you wholeheartedly but why stop there? After a Warlord omni, I would love to see a Arion and a Arak omni which came out in the 80s as well. We need some fantasy love besids Conan over at Marvel. BTW, check out Jon Sable Freelance is you're a Grell fanboy like me. IMO, that's Grells best work and my all time favorite comic.
Omar, I started reading Green Arrow digitally and as soon as I saw your review I ordered the omnibus. Just got volume one and two in today and I can't wait to read it. And I really want the cover art under the dust jacket as a poster or painting for my wall. Thanks for all you do!
I don’t love the dust jacket either (I mean, the art’s great, more about the spine), but this omnibus looks amazing. One of my favorite DC runs of all time. It shows it’s age but it’s still full of compelling and thoughtful stories.
The owner of my LCS has been telling me to read this series since I started going there, might finally let him win and get him to order this in for me, looks really cool.
I cracked mine open and started reading yesterday morning at 1am. Read for an hour and a half before I went to sleep. Now I'm already 600+ pages in. It flows that well.
@@NearMintCondition just finished a little more than half an hour ago. 5 days, or roughly 300+ pages a day. Not bad at all. Awesome book. Now I just need to hold out for a second volume... some day.
@@NearMintCondition I hope that the War Of The Realms omni also has great binding. I'm sure it will, since marvel rarely dissapoints when it comes to the binding on their omnibi!
Yes! Love this Omni, can't wait for V.2 this fall. I agree about the spine, kinda odd. Got to meet Mike Grell several years ago and had him sign my Longbow Hunters mini. Great guy, lots of cool stories, especially about Sergio Aragones.
I am worried about the size of the omnibus. I would have liked this to be collected in smaller omnis like the George Perez Wonder Woman and New Teen Titans. I picked this up on cheap graphic novels the other day, but I will keep my TPB's of this series as well, just in case the omni falls apart over time.
Thanks so much Uncanny Omar! I also anticipated this b/c I started collecting comics in the 1970s-1980s (I was in college at Berkeley when Longbow Hunters was released) - I am so happy they recolored the Longbow Hunters - the trade I have has aged and it looks like the colors were muted and faint - but this omnibus looks like the Longbow Hunters was recolored. Don't know if you have a DC contact equivalent to Gabriel at Marvel but it would be great to know if we will ever get a Warlord Omnibus featuring Mike Grell's incredible story of Starkatis. This is the best run to me (GA), Lemire's is second but Lemire's GA is not the one I grew up with
I've got two Mike Grell pages. Not Green Arrow. But the few pages he did for THUNDER Agents in that last series. One page Dynamo suiting up. The next page him about to face off some giant robot.
Not really big on Green Arrow but it's good to see for people who are interested that the book is built pretty damn well this time. Can't say the same about the Preacher Omni, this one just doesn't want to stay open. Shame cuz I really didn't want the Absolutes, not my format, but I guess it's the best you can get when it comes to Preacher rn. Hopefully when they (prolly inevitably) do Transmetropolitan in this format it will be a well built book as well.
I was interested in this omnibus but was wary as to whether or not it would come out but after seeing this with the story premise as well as the artwork I can tell Ill love it once Im able to get my hands on it
Hell yea brother purchasing. You should do a review of omnis for people who dont know anything about certain heros because they only like certain heros. For example a person who doesn't know anything about animal man start with this omni that kind of thing.
Now we need a Jon Sable Omni. Loved Mike Grell since his days with Legion ,Aquaman & Warlord. Mike Gold had worked with Grell at First Comics on Sable. Nice Jazz in the background.
JSF is my favorite comic and I wish DC would buy/borrow the character and make it so. There is a set of Jon Sable omnis but they're standard sized and don't collect as many issues at once.

Awesome looking Omni. Omar, in observation of the DC Omnis video you put out the other day, is this Omni one you would recommend to DC novices? The late 80s art is quite appealing to me.
You cant compare the two. The tv OQ/GA was nothing more than a watered down Batman clone while the comic version is a much better character under Mike Grell writing and art.

Good overview, Omar. I want this, but since the pandemic started, it has been quite difficult to get book at reasonable prices here in Mexico. The dollar went up (MX peso went down) ~25%, so every book is at least 25% more expensive. On top of that, Amazon (our best choice in here) has not had their usual prices, which were usually about 35-40% off cover 2 or 3 months after the release date. Now it's more 10-15% off for any book that came out after covid. Anyway, if I can get this at a good price, I will definitively get it.
Regarding Green Arrow, I have only read the Lemire deluxe edition and loved that run! This omni does not sound anything like that run. Not gonna buy this omni straight away, but I will pick it up if I find it somewhere cheap.
Its like Dc refuses to do a (near) perfect edition. If its not the binding, then is the spine, the dust jacket or whatever thing they decide to screw. I used the word "decide" because that is what they do. It is that (a decition) or (even worst) they just screw something every single time because they suck at making premium quality products.
@Uncanny Omar/ This GA series by Mike Grell was a seminal re-defining of not only who Oliver Queen was, but ‘what’ he was. How Dinah, the City of Seattle, and other mainstream DC characters saw themselves, in Oliver Queens orbit, and how they were perceived by the ‘everyday person’ was to my memory, a through-line that Mr. Grell had slowly baked into his Scripts. For the Millennials (or pre-millennials ) reading this, here is what I mean: The Michael Grell / Ed Hannigan Green Arrow Scripts brought down to the street, what we now call ‘Street Level Heroes.’ Long before Bendis run on DD, and other such urban hero stories. I never finished reading this run...I was too busy in High School living life and chasing ..well, you know. HaHaHa!! Thank you for this Great Review and the trip down memory lane, which reminds me-I never actually kept up with the series, even though I was an immediate Mike Grell fan. Time to do so, when I buy this Omnibus. Thank you, KidFlash.
Last 2 questions. By chance did you ever review these two Image titles: 1) Southern Bastards, 2) Invisible Republic? Also, what month/yr of your videos would I find them? Last, do you have a Business email? - Thank you.
Going with the title rather than Grell's name on the front and the mapping that takes us over halfway through his run makes me think volume 2 is going to get into the Chuck Dixon stuff. Across 2 big books could we fit the entire volume of GA, both GA prestige minis, the Shado prestige mini and the Flash and Superman crossover issues?
Thinking it through this volume is Longbow Hunters and 1-50 I believe, volume 2 wouldn't fit everything else but doing Wonder Year, Song of the Dragon and 51-101 would take us to a logical close point and leave the Connor material for a possible (thinner) volume 3.
If your in the UK dont even bother checking out CheapGraphicNovels....quoted $76 to ship one omnibus... with 3 in the cart the shipping quote was $160.... Amazon US shipped them for 11$. Wish they would just say they dont want our business. Shame as they do offer a great range of products and they are a great price if you dont have to pay the ridiculous shipping cost
Can't wait to get this!! Love the story , love the artwork , not complaining because of size , the more the better.whole run was amazing until connor pops up.
Love the artwork on both the book & the dust jacket. Like you, I been waiting to get this bad boi for a long ass minute... Can't believe its right around the corner. The other half is gonna be like 30ish issues, right?
I'll never forget ordering the first issue of The Longbow Hunters from Mile High Comics back when it was originally released. Those jerks sent me a second printing without informing me up front! Just tried to slip it on me. A months-long dispute ensued, they never made it right. I was just a kid. They destroyed my faith in human beings!
I usually have problems reading 80-90’s comics, the art bores me (might also be the story, but i dont think so). But the art here looks so timeless and amazing, kinda reminds me of Mazzucchelli’s artwork in year one. This is definitely a must buy for me
I might have the same problem, I was ready ASM by Michilline and McFarlane and I couldn't get into it. Maybe it was the art, maybe it was the dialogue idk
@@matsmagnussen It could be because of the over explainatory dialogue (as in every character has to explain every little thing they are doing in that moment) but I can't say I'm a fan of the art either
Looks gorgeous, but it seems they left out the Green Arrow origin by Mike Grell that was published in Secret Origins #38 from 1989. It would have been nice if they included it. Perhaps it's not too late and they can put it in a second omnibus. (I wish it had been included in one of the TPs) Also, around the time Grell was on the Green Arrow title there was a Black Canary story in Action Comics Weekly that was not by Grell and it wasn't even very good to be honest, but I still wish they collected it with Grell's run.
How does it work if you need to insure your collection? I don’t really collect anything so I don’t know anything about it. What if your property floods/gets hit by lightening/burns/stolen or otherwise destroyed? I’m assuming comic collectors insure their books because some are out of print. I’ve just always wondered how that works. Do insurance companies require a collection to be appraised before insuring it?
ShastaHawk I mean these are all worst case scenarios but still happens all the time. Growing up I had a neighbor that was big into collecting baseball cards from the 1940s-1980s. He had a whole room dedicated for his collection and he had an insurance policy up to like 2 million dollars. It makes sense. If I had a lot of collectibles that were out of print, I would sure as hell insure them. Say you want to start collecting Marvel omnibuses. After 10 or 15 you’re getting over $1,000 already. I’m no expert but wouldn’t it be a good idea to insure that?
Have the trades but almost certain I'm gonna cave just because I've wanted this for so long :) No idea why they couldn't have split it up a little better with a vol 2. Do we know if Shado will be included? Not really sure where that falls in this run.
What the title of the omni tells me is that it will collect the complete series , as opposed to simply the Mike Grell stuff in future omnis. If that is true, then all the better!!! I wouldnt mind getting all 130+ issues.
Yeah, I posted a similar thought a while ago but can see them only going as far as 101 with the Dixon run and either not doing the Connor issues or eventually doing them under a different title since it's quite a departure and would make a much thinner book.
Missed out when it first appeared on IST and CGN... But I was able to find it at near cover price on Amazon. Oh, well! Can't always catch that %50 off! Haven't dived in yet, but can't wait. @@superdragonz1 Not bad advice, but I'll be okay if I see it go down considerably. I really wanted to read it. Have it now and I'm 700 pages in. I'm sure Amazon will get it below 60% off towards the holidays! I just had to scratch the itch.

Love the artwork on both the book & the dust jacket. Like you, I been waiting to get this bad boi for a long ass minute... Can't believe its right around the corner. The other half is gonna be like 30ish issues, right?
I think they might padded out with minis or maybe even some Dixon issues pre 100.
You had me at Seattle!! I just picked this up! I love the show and 80s comics I hope I like it, Do you know what other black label omnibus are out?
Preordered from TOW, hopefully it will ship...eventually...
Longbow Hunters issue #1 page 19, he calls himself Green Arrow. Sorry.
Damn, you are right, brother. I stand corrected. But I specifically remember the rest of the run him not being called Green Arrow.
@@NearMintCondition You're technically both right, since the prequel miniseries isn't part of the "regular" 80 issue run. ;)
I usually have problems reading 80-90’s comics, the art bores me (might also be the story, but i dont think so). But the art here looks so timeless and amazing, kinda reminds me of Mazzucchelli’s artwork in year one. This is definitely a must buy for me
Well said and its a great book.
@@NearMintCondition Thank you King
I might have the same problem, I was ready ASM by Michilline and McFarlane and I couldn't get into it. Maybe it was the art, maybe it was the dialogue idk
@@stormblade2895 Exactly! Thats so strange, because McFarlanes art on asm is considered sooooo great too.
@@matsmagnussen It could be because of the over explainatory dialogue (as in every character has to explain every little thing they are doing in that moment) but I can't say I'm a fan of the art either
Would you say this is the best omnibus and story for green arrow? If not what’s a good starting point to read green arrow
Yes to both questions
Curse you, Omar! Yet another good looking book that I'll have to get.
I want this! Another omni on the wish list haha
Looks gorgeous, but it seems they left out the Green Arrow origin by Mike Grell that was published in Secret Origins #38 from 1989. It would have been nice if they included it. Perhaps it's not too late and they can put it in a second omnibus. (I wish it had been included in one of the TPs)
Also, around the time Grell was on the Green Arrow title there was a Black Canary story in Action Comics Weekly that was not by Grell and it wasn't even very good to be honest, but I still wish they collected it with Grell's run.
Secret Origins #38 is also included ... and I liked it really well. Quite short but a really funny origin. :)
@@bobcarmack I noticed recently! I'm glad they included it. I think it wasn't mentioned in the early announcement of the omnibus.
Damn good question. He has a lot of money tied up in those books
What a beauty amigo!🤘👏
I hope to get this soon. Looks great!
Gonna have to pick that up.🤘
Wow! Marvel should learn with DC how to make a proper dust cover for their Omnibus!!!
This series is a lot like punisher with the gritty street tone
This one looks a like like Grant Morrison art style
Green Arrow omnibus was preordered can't wait
Its coming!
It’s real and it’s coming! Hell yeah
So, if I love the show "Arrow", will I love this book? Should I buy this book?
Like Omar said it's him fighting street crime. No super villains more grounded in reality.
Yes and you should get Year One Deluxe by Andy Diggle
How many Conan original marvel year epics will there be? Around 20-25?
And how many dark horse volumes?
Has this run been collected in it's entirety in proper trades? You should definitely do a video on your most favorite mature comics.
Yes it has completely.
I need to get this so bad, love love the green arrow character
This is a phenomenal book!
Is the book a little “wavy” like the Tom King Vision book? It looks a little that way in the still photos.
I cant wait for this one
Missed out when it first appeared on IST and CGN... But I was able to find it at near cover price on Amazon. Oh, well! Can't always catch that %50 off! Haven't dived in yet, but can't wait. I remember this as a kid. I was young and dumb, so it seemed a little boring to me. Funny thing is, this is exactly the kind of story I want now. Thanks for the review!
I would always wait there’s Omnis that start with a small discount but later go almost to 50% off
@@superdragonz1 Not bad advice, but I'll be okay if I see it go down considerably. I really wanted to read it. Have it now and I'm 700 pages in. I'm sure Amazon will get it below 60% off towards the holidays! I just had to scratch the itch.
Jonathan Thomas np and yes there’s time where I can’t wait either haha fortunately I’ve become more patient, cheers!
Have DC omnibus always had sewn binding? I always assumed they were glued.
Most are. First printings of Death and Return of Superman has glued binding.
Make sure you sign up to the NMC Patreon for just $1 (or more if you like).
Dont like that he never gets called green arrow or that canary never uses her ability but still looks interesting. On the fence weather to get it or not
This looks dope, would this be a two omnibus run? If two ever comes out
Definitely two. I had all the trades.
Bruce Grossman thanks. Im definitely more interested in it now
Do you need to read something before reading this omni or know some stuff or can someone jump right into it. I'm interested in reading Green Arrow stories.
No not all.
@@NearMintCondition Thanks, I'll be sure to pick one up. I definitely want to learn more about Green Arrow
Most books from this time are so wordy. This doesn't seem like that. Definitely appears to be ahead of it's time. That art is fantastic too.
Hey ! great stuff. Never read Green Arrow. Is this a good starting point ?
Yes
Volume 2 for this will be significantly smaller won’t it?
If they stick to just Grell material then yes, but it being titled Longbow Hunters Saga might indicate the start of the Dixon run in volume 2.
Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters Saga Omnibus Vol. 2 will collect:
- Green Arrow #51-80
- Green Arrow Annual #4-6
- Who's Who #14
- The Brave and the Bold #1-6
- Shado: Song of the Dragon #1-4
- Green Arrow: The Wonder Year #1-4
Altogether again 1480 humble pages. :)
I didn't think this had been released yet. Is this an advance copy or did I miss a release drop? I've been watching but IST doesn't have it and Cheap Graphic Novels lists it as 'Special Order Only'.
I got my copy from CGN.
@@NearMintCondition Darn. I must have screwed up. Thanks mate.
Of course. I think they sold out the first day, but have ordered more.
Hey Omar...what are your favourite superheroes outside DC & Marvel ??
Best GA run ever.
It’s great.
