While this is a damned old video at this point, here's some info for any newcomers and to answer your question Zeos. Yes using a tube actually would make a difference in terms of ability to conduct signals at a given gauge. Electricity flows primarily through the surface of a conductor, if it's a constant flow (Say with stable DC power), the depth it reaches will increase over time (We're talking nano to milliseconds here), but once you get into higher frequencies, it doesn't have time to saturate the wire and can only travel along the surface. Using a tube would actually improve the amount of surface area of the wire, lowering it's resistance before saturation, this is also why low gauge wires have a lower resistance as they also have a higher surface area and why high gauge wires can cause signal degradation, because the resistance gets so high that the signal isn't able to push through the entire length and it stops conducting. This is a bigger deal in radio communications, but applies at lower frequencies like with audio too. Though I can't say that using a tube would be very practical unless you're using hard-wired connections that'll never move once bent. However, it's also a moot point since that is exactly one of the reasons why multi-core cables are commonly used as they massively increase the surface area and being in close contact they act as one massive conductor with a greater surface area than a tube or solid core wire.
Andrew Robinson you know what I did, I have some pretty expensive speakers, tested multiple high dollar, way way expensive cables. know v what I run now? far less effort than this shit, just soldered connectors onto gold Radio Shack speaker wire the kind that's $12 from a fucking spool. "sounds" just as good as megabucks cables and takes 5 minutes to make.
Hey Z I don't know if you've tried this or not but when I'm doing large runs of wire I actually use a drill to twist them. Does a wonderful job and saves the fingers.
Never think we had humor around here, would ya? Hell yea... should hear the guy who invented the Int. Space Station’s laser guided docking mechanism (later to become the LASIK eye surgery laser) speak fluent Klingon. Yeah, talk about funny. Never believe he’s married....
Cracks me up, I built commercial aircraft cables for 18 years, shielded, various gauges, generator cables. We had termination tools both as to not crush the conductors leading to weakness and heat as well pneumatic crimpers but I never built my own home audio cables. We always used heat guns but our conductors had teflon coating so they could take the heat. Thanks for sharing, its super easy
That was great, lots of good tips and tricks, I have terminated many speaker cables with those exact Nakamichi bananas. And I have poked myself with the screwdriver. And I have also stripped off too much copper. Excellent tips and tricks. Highly recommended.
Luis Pedro Dominguez Aldana Because you couldn’t believe what you were seeing, let me remind you, you watched a guy, put together a great speaker cable, that looks EXACTLY like the high end ones pen pushers put a premium on! And then you was like WTF! why do I buy high end premium grade cables for, when I can just copy this guy to accomplish the same results at a fraction of the price! Is why you sir!...watched the whole video. 🤔or was that thought only in my head? 😂😂
I love you Z, and this will be the only tip that i can probably ever give you. Having been in the car audio install business, ive found the clamp type strippers that you lay the wire in sideways, and it can be any guage up to about 8. Just squeeze and it strips however far you set the wire in, crispy, clean, and never takes copper with it. They usually have adjustable tension to assure that.
Hi Z, any reason why you use four conductor wire and twist them together, versus just using a two conductor wire? True question, just see others making two conductor speaker cables. Keep up the great vids!
I just watched your video on the nobsound amp and now I'm watching this video. I like your videos, interesting and informative. My son works for Ikea and I know he is able to buy discontinued items.
Instead of twisting the wires by hand, I've seen a lot of car audio installers use an electric drill. They'll put one end of the wires in the chuck and then secure the other end to something like a vice. You'll have perfectly twisted wires in under a minute.
Thank you so much !!! You are informative and funny. 😊 I really appreciate this video. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. Now that I have new gear it’s time to finally try. Again really great.
Z!, I just installed my new DIY Z Wires. Thanks for the material list links, since I would have ordered the wrong shit, and the how-to. Pretty much everything you said would happen, happened too... except I didn't cut myself with the screwdriver. Thanks for the kick-ass tutorial man. Excited to put these babies to work.
Thanks for this, it’s given me some ideas, When I look at the rubbish for sale in the uk on ebay and the price, I’m looking for the parts and pricing it up, I’ll make some for myself and see how it goes
Great to see you heat shrink the banana plug "outers" to prevent potential electrical short's - most people are unaware that the metal outers are great conductor's.
I just feel that Peter Griffin taught me how to make speaker cables... haha... Amazing video. I've was looking around youtube (watched like 10 tutorials) but I'm gonna stick to your instructions, gear and materials. Thank You!!
You claim to have made dozens of these over the years. I was expecting to watch a precise demonstration. However, you bungled your way through it. Your my kind of guy! Thanks for fumbling through some things I need to be mindful of. Peace.
If you really want to go full ocd, I would recommend the copper crimp tubes to for inside the banana clip. Much more secure than bare wire.. Also make sure to use the correct crimp tool ''barrel crimps'' .. I was going to put a link but had a hard time finding the large hole barrel crimps
I currently have forearm and finger cramps from braiding too long headphone cables. You should make a video about doing this. I did figure it out on my own, but not before a couple of failed attempts from improper technique and starting over again, very frustrating. Also, that feeling of doom when you notice you messed up a single twist right in the middle.
Z is funny as hell. Need a beer with him! He said it best at 40:37, "its not going to make it sound any better"... Me personally, I don't even bother doing all of that. I just cut from a 10 gauge and hook to my speakers and amp. The banana, pins, y shape plugs make no difference and only convenience to attaching to the amp or speaker. The best way is to just twist the bare wires and hook on, no need for all those plugs as they get distorted being passed on through so many plugs.
you should invest in a cordless embossing heat gun. its meant for melting metal powders onto paper, but its basically a more portable heat gun thats great for stuff like heat shrink.
Is it true. I see a Pioneer Spec 2? Awesome! A great amplifier! I use the whole Pioneer Hifi equipment from nineteen seventy seven... It works still well after fifty years...
Do you keep the speaker wires off the floor? Some people do that because of some sort of unwanted "interference" (that's what they say not sure if that's true or not)
Thanks, learned a lot. Made my own 10' braided cables. I'll try these now and undoubtedly free up a large chunk of time. Braiding looks cool but I haven't a clue if they contribute any more sonic quality - plus you need three hands or a wife to help who will probably leave you once your finished. (Hmmmm) The links are most appreciated. Plus - I loved your review on the SVS Ultra bookshelf speakers. Absolutely gonna get some. The Bliss Pig

I am planning on trying this with the 14/4 version of the cable. How difficult is it to get the cable fairly straightened out? Should I lay it out flat across the floor with some books on it for a few days? Or will it always try to coil? Thanks for the informational video with a touch of comedy!
Zeos which closed headphone that you have tested has the best imaging? I will use it for gaming and also music listening. My budget is around the AD2000X price. Current setup is PC -> game/music -> O2 ODAC combo -> Shure SE846 Thanks for the help.

I used to get the wire pants or I guess they're called boots from Parts Express. I think I had a few dozen at one point and used them for speaker and RCA cables over the years.Recently I found a bunch of new old stock Soundstream boots on EBay but I'll be damned if I can find them in my " project boxes" in my basement.
Pro tip: If you use a drill, and feed the ends of the wires that you want to twist into the chuck, tighten chuck, and then slowly squeeze the trigger, you can twist wires together very evenly . Makes it very easy and attractive.
Those are nice for people that want them but I've been using 16 gauge lamp cord 4 years and even swapping out with the expensive cables I can't hear the difference
I mean if your going to spend $500 On speakers and an amp why not spend $40 to $60 on wires like rca and speaker wires to not only sound good but look the part also. You can even buy them already made on ebay for that price give or take. Has to be better then a lamp cord in sound and if not definitely looks better. But to me and it's just my opinion, if you have to use lamp cord for wire then you might be in the wrong hobby. Audio tends to be a costly hobby and definitely a hobby one should take pride in.
Hey, will you ever do a review on any Swan speakers? I was looking for one yesterday and didn't find one. Then I watched this and it almost looks like you have M200MKII/III's on your stands in the living room. I have a set of MKII's that I've had for 5 years and will never part with them for near field.
I mean, I don't have to do that, my speaker cables are already there, but the video is cool, the cables that you've made are even cooler... and you're even more cool... (smash with extreme violence the "Subscribe" button)
Great Video. Interconnects next? its great to see all the bits you get on Amazon US. Its difficult to get them in India, and even if I do, they are usually imported from US, hence super expensive.
At one time building your speaker cables was well worth it, now going on eBay getting a custom length at 12 or 14 gauge with good banana plugs or the y plugs whatever their called can be purchased under $80. with free shipping it maybe cheaper just ordering them.
I have a bunch of 12awg monoprice 2 conductor wire (regular, not sheathed). If I am going to double up to get 9 awg, is it better to just keep them parallel, twist the two lengths together, or split them into 4 strands and twist each pos/neg pair and then twist the two pair?
My question is where did you get the breakout box that you used to make the balanced headphone cable used in the Monoprice M560 video? I have scoured the web and have not found it. I was going to just do the split in the XLR4M, but your reasoning for doing the breakout box makes sense.
Headshrink works much better with a hot air gun. Also when stripping wires, just cut the insulator and then spin it clockwise as you remove the insulator, that way you twist the wire perfectly while removing it
Hey Zeos. I've been waiting for a speaker wire creation vid from you. Nice work! Your house is looking cleaner and more organized with every vid. Question: When is the Ohm - Walsh review dropping? I've been itching for some affordable omni-directional speakers!
I ordered the 3M 4' Red and White heatshink (linked here) several months back.I finally started my wire build and when it came time to heat shrink around the banana plugs, I realized that what I ordered (linked) is way too big (1 1/2" flat and 3/4" diameter). 3/8" diameter might be a little tight. Any chance it was 3/8" or 1/2" diameter in the video?
yep. hoping to find the right stuff in the states next week when I return for vacation. I have one set of Zwires complete except for that extra step of covering up the banana plugs

I think 3/8 or 1/2 will fit. I hate the way heat shrink is labeled.
yep. hoping to find the right stuff in the states next week when I return for vacation. I have one set of Zwires complete except for that extra step of covering up the banana plugs
