Nice video. I have made several of these for gifts and everyone really has enjoyed them. Two quick things I have done/noticed. Like you I made a template but only for the outside shape. I then drilled 1/16" holes in the template to located the center of the holes for the bottle and glasses. I drill the holes while tracing the pattern and I have pilots for the forsner bit. Also, if you want a cool look rotate your pattern 10-15 degrees. It gives a pretty cool pattern.
The mdf thing for the center hole was a waste of time. Simply lower your router bit based on the thickness of your board. I watched your description 3 times and can't for the life of me see why you went to all that trouble.
I used the MDF because the wood I was suing was a not very thick and I couldn’t get the round over to work because the bearing was above the board. It was just used as a spacer for a thin board. Regards, Bob
Great video. I met you at SWAT a few years ago when you demonstrated in the bosque room. Anyway, my questions are about the wine glass holders. One, how do you prevent tear out in the holes you drilled? 2, how did you router one side, then the other, did you use a bit with a bearing on top, or no? 3, did you sand around the holes when you routered them?
Hello Tommy, I wish I could have made SWAT this year. I’ve just been to busy. I used a Forstner bit. They cut clean holes. Yes, I use a bit with a bearing and I measure the thickness of the board and adjust the height to only cut half way. Yes, I sanded everything to clean up any roughness. Regards, Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner thank you for your reply. Now, referring to rounding over the sides. I understand you adjusting the router to half the side. That means the bearing would ride against the uncut wood above, giving you a round over on that side. But when you turn the piece over to round over the uncut side, there is no wood for the bearing to ride against. It has been cut away. So maybe the bearing is riding in the middle, that way you can cut both sides without a problem?
@@tommyschutz9008 Apologies, the bearing should be adjusted to ride on the center of the wood. That way it will cut the same pattern depth on both sides. Regards. Bob

Very nice! Thanks for the instructions/ideas about the wine glasses flutes!! I did not think of that until after having made one for a friend of mine & watching your video. Thanks again!
great job bob. I keep meaning to make some of these but never get around to it. I hope you make more of these and use some of that wizardry you use on pens to make some really cool versions.

Just a thought and a question. On your template did you make a small hole to mark the center of the wine glass holder and what size bit did you use for the bottle and glass holders?
I really wish I had thought of putting a chamfer on the one (My first one!) that I made & gave to a friend of mine prior to giving it to her, LOL. Proves the old saying is true & that saying is (among others), "Hindsight is 20/20!".

What router bit did you use for the center hole shoulder? Same round over or is that a chamfer bit?
It’s just a standard 1/2” sound over bit.

Round over, can’t spell today. 😀
Are there any woods that are Not good for these?
Since you don’t eat off of them like you would a charcuterie board or cutting board, I don’t believe so.

Bob

What router bits did you use
All I used was a round over bit, the kind that comes in a value pack of bits so it was nothing special.
