There isn’t a pilot shortage in Canada. There’s a pay shortage. It’s a very expensive profession to break into with very, very low pay in the 1st few years. Young people aren’t wiling to make the sacrifices required to be a pilot like they have in the past. Once compensation catches up to the current reality the pilot shortage will disappear.
It's a pay shortage, none of the existing pilots in Canada want to work somewhere with dogshit pay when better options exist (south of the border if you can get right to work, or overseas). And this is only gonna get worse as time goes on and we start to see the effects of fewer people entering the ab-initio training pipeline. I don't blame them at all. Who wants to spend $120k on flight training to go work for Jazz (Air Canada Express) and make $39k a year before tax while being based in some of the most expensive cities on the continent?
Airlines pay pilots garbage wage for the first 10 years of their career. Who wants to spend $100k on education to have to live in their mom's basement for the next decade??? It's a pay shortage, not a pilot shortage.
Just a friendly Pilot speaking honestly: It’ll be nice if airlines could assist with the Pilot Shortage by researching and starting Cadet/Ab Initio programs for low hour pilots finishing with 250 hours who are Multi IFR rated. Also well said John!!
Tbh with even that minimal time someone should be calling. Perhaps taking another look at your resume with a professional or some other aspect is not clicking. If you willing to move anywhere in the country and seek out those jobs someone will take you on. Only question is how willing are you to pick up and sacrifice your current conditions?
BS. the cause is the super expensive cost to train a new pilot. Very few students can afford it. These older pilots are getting dangerous. they should be retiring at 60 not 65.
There is no shortage for pilots for sure, this kind of information, really misleading young people. Aviation is very expensive, jobs are scared. Young pilots with no experience will end up in remote part of Canada with high living expenses and very low pay. Only the very experience pilots with many jet hours are in demand. Please do not spread misleading information around.
There is no pilot shortage in Canada. There are airlines who are unwilling to pay properly, Canadian pilots make HALF of what their comparable American pilots do. Flying the same aircraft on the same routes. Before 9/11, Canadian pilots made similar to Americans. It's time to return to the norm.
