      I believe the reason they haven’t tried is because of how massive the scale of this Battle is and that it wouldn’t do justice for a single movie to cover it. The actual Battle of Leyte gulf consists of Multiple engagements and Battles in a span of 3 days. From the Sibuyan Sea, San Bernardino Straight, Surigao Straight, and Cape Engano, and Lastly and Famously the Battle off Samar.

    The Battle of Leyte Gulf is often overlooked by Midway or Pearl Harbor, but it’s just as, if not more important
    Not only does it really start the era of the aircraft carrier, but also ends an era. As this is the last time two opposing battleships will ever be in a direct fight with one another.

    • @TheCsel
      @TheCsel 3 роки тому +40

      the Japanese mistook the escort carriers for full carriers and the destroyers for cruisers, so they were using armor piercing shells against the destroyers. The shells went in one side and out the other poking holes without exploding. The destroyers were using smoke and rain to cover themselves while firing with radar. They used all their ammo down to the star shell flares. The fires and low caliber hits didn't really threaten the japanese ships but they were very confusing and disorienting. And air groups from nearby taskforces were called in to about 400 planes, they werent well equipped to attack capital ships but ran straffing runs to distract them. All this further reinforced to the Japanese that the Americans were there in greater numbers and a stronger force.

    My grandfather was on a destroyer, the USS Abner Reed at Leyte Gulf. The ship survived a sea mine off the Aleutian islands but didn't survive a japanese suicide bomber dropping a bomb down one of the smoke stacks. I believe he was sent home after that being shaken up but went back later to continue serving until he retired. I didn't get a chance to speak with him since he died when I was very young. An uncle tells me he tried to get my grandfather to talk about being at the attack on Pearl Harbor but, even while drunk, my grandfather would only say it was the worst day of his life and didn't want to talk about it.

    "The Battle of Leyte Gulf has another pre-eminent distinction. It is the largest naval confrontation in the history of mankind". And yet, Hollywood has not made a single motion picture of this battle. Why not? They've made many movies of Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway and the USS Indianapolis disaster.

    • @johnemerson1363
      @johnemerson1363 4 роки тому +38

      The Battle of Leyte Gulf is so large, has so many parts and covered so many major events that it would take a couple of full seasons to really tell the story and do each story justice. There are so many outstanding stories but many would be so hard to tell and be honest. Take the story of the destroyers and destroyer escorts of Taffy 3. They took on Kurita's battleships and caused Kurita to turn back. Several of the DD's and DE's were sunk but events later that day caused rescue operations to be terribly delayed resulting in very heave post sinking casualties much like what happened to the USS Indianapolis crew. I would love to see these stories told, but PLEASE tell the stories, warts and all.

Imagine that Japanese battle group clearing Samar island, emerging into the Pacific, turning south to annihilate an almost defenseless marine landing group. The carnage would have exceeded the European D Day.
      Many people know of Alvin York and Audie Murphy, and I do not minimize their heroism, but for impact, Evans’ actions completely dwarfs what those two did relative to lives saved.

    Years back I wrote a paper that included the actions of the destroyer escort USS Samuel B Roberts DE413 which made up part of task force Taffy 3. What these brave American sailors did in the battle of Leyte was beyond courageous. Destroyer escorts like the Roberts were never intended to fight other ships...they were sub hunters and they were woefully unequipped to fight against the Japanese ships they opposed. They literally saved the lives of tens of thousands of US troops on slow troop transports that would have been massacred if the Japanese fleet had been unopposed.

    • @SilentHotdog28
      @SilentHotdog28 Рік тому

      These destroyers and destroyer escorts somehow went up gun to gun against battleships and cruisers and came out victorious. It's ridiculous to think about, even though they had air power on their side, it's still something that should never have happened......but it did.

    Actually it was the British Royal Navy that showed how useful the aircraft carriers were, Japan saw what Britain did in the Battle of Toronto in November 1940 where British planes were launched from an aircraft carrier and attacked the Italian fleet in harbour. Japan saw how successful it was, and only then did they realise how good they were.
    Japan wasn't the first to effectively use aircraft carries, it was the British.

    I live a short distance from surigao city on mindanao.
    Every morning when i wake up walk out side i see leyte island about 17 miles away.
    I was shocked one after noon to be diving and ran accross what was left of a japanese destroyer about 70 feet down. Later that day talking to a few of my buddies they told me some very interesting stories and turnd out there is another sunken japanese ship out a little further in about 100ft. One very old guy told me there were u.s. plane out there as well that had been shot down. The planes attacked
    And caught the ship that were sunk in a bay like area.
    They told me of the u.s. pilots flight fast and very low dodging between the coconut trees they were that low guns blazing attacking the japanese on mindanao.
    A lot of people do not realize to this day how greatful the people are for all our help.
    I have traveled the route on the batan death march took and they have 5 or 6 ft high monuments every kilometer in memory. As i traveled the route i was so taken in by how hard and terrible this must have been with the heat and humidity.
    And there are plenty of areas where other major battles that have monuments as well.
    You have no idea how many time a week i am addressed by hi joe or hay joe. This to me is there way of daying thanks. I was so suprised by the friendly warm way they address and treat americans here (99%) of the people that is.
    The philippines is one of the oldest allies the usa has and the respect the people have of that is seen every day.

    The Johnston fired all her armor piercing 5 inch shells so switched to her HE 5 inch. Then they ran out of those so Cmdr. Evans ordered his ship closer to the enemy and fired all their anti-aircraft shells and star shells (flares) into the enemy cruisers hoping to set them on fire.

    3:00 I'm pretty sure that is false. Suzuya wasn't hit by torpedoes during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
    Certainly not from Johnston, since she fired her torpedoes all at once, not in successive volleys.
    Suzuya was crippled by a hit (likely by a bomb or a possibly a shell) setting off her OWN torpedoes.
