      This is a top quality documentary and I am certain Mr. Felton would be the first to agree with that. History Channel has injured it's reputation badly with all the alien/ufo garbage they air all too frequently. What's worse is that since ads drive what gets produced and aired, and given that ratings drive ads, it seems apparent that more people want to watch the garbage than genuine history which might teach them something. It's a sad statement but it's true.

      I dont think so. McArthur was hellbent on reclaiming the Philippine islands at the expense of its eventual destruction. The Philippines could have been spared. US already had the upper hand, they could have chosen Formosa, now Taiwan. This idea was what almost all other generals wanted but McArthur and his ego would not allow this. He clammored FDR to go with his plan, or else, declining it would cost him the election saying that he abandoned the Philippines not only once but twice.

      Still largely only a symbolic victory for Mcarthur since he left it to die to the japanese and promised to come back. Still to this it's a very controversial move by him. Many military leaders disagreed with this and surprising Mcarthur still won in the eyes of Roosevelt. I could look further into it, but i think it might had something to do with Public image of both Mcarthur and Roosevelt after they used Philippines falling to inspire Americans against the japan on top of pearl harbor.

    • @kidpeligro7878
      @kidpeligro7878 4 роки тому +16

      True, Macarthur pitched in to Roosevelt the "moral obligation" to liberate Philippines. But some quarters especially the Navy thought it was self serving for Macarthur for glory, political significance and act of saving face to erase the memory of his woeful mishandling of the situation during the critical days at the beginning of the defense of Philippines. (During his Leyte Landing he actually had a press along with him to memorialize the event)
      If Nimitz had his way, Philippines would have been bypassed in favor of Formosa (Taiwan) and Eastern China seaboard which basically acheives the same goal of cutting off Japan from its colonies and acquiring airbases to launch heavy bombers to attack the home islands.
      As we all know, Macarthur had his way resulting in tens of thousands of American casualties, hundreds of thousands of Filipino deaths and Manila being reduced to rubble making it the second most devastated city in WWII behind Warsaw.

    • @firepatriot42
      @firepatriot42 4 роки тому +2

      True about him having press with him on his landing. I had a great uncle who was on the same landing craft as Macarthur and, I heard this from my aunt who took care of him in his final years, those soldiers that where with him thought him pompous and a glory hog.
      That well known photo of MacArthur wading ashore? Supposedly it's only a small part of a larger one that was cropped that has my great uncle in it.

    My Uncle, U W Todd was a Pvt in the Armies 38th infantry Div . He had served in New Guinea and he was sent to Leyte Gulf as a follow on wave of infantry. He won a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. The later cost him his life.
    He was on a ship in Leyte Gulf on December 10th 1944 when the first organized, purposeful Kamikaze attack of WWII was launched against US force. His ship was hit and he was burned horribly. He died three days later and was buried at sea. I know he won a Bronze Star but don’t know why. many of his records burned in the early 70’s in the fire in (I think -St. Louis).
    I never met him. It is terrifying to think of how he died though doubtless he was administered huge quantities of morphine- there was nothing else to be done. I remember him always but especially on Memorial Day

    As far as specs are concerned at the 1:48 mark it incorrectly claims that Musashi's beam was 172 ft. Multiple other sources claim it was 121ft. That's a big difference.

    Yes. Yamato was the biggest ship of her time but it was greatly inferior to that of the iowa-class battleship which had more accurate guns quicker reloads and or muzzle velocity which means more damage better radar

    • @GeminiMusicAustralia

      Proof that bigger isn’t always better. The Yamato was the perfect sword while the Iowa was an average gun. The best sword is good, but nothing compares to the worst gun.

Osmeña had establish a new cabinet in Leyte. Although i live in Northern Samar, not Leyte, the place was an interesting place of the history of WW2 in the Philippines.

    I've always been IMPRESSED with the Pair of Yamato battleships; the Musashi & the Yamato. They were the LARGEST Battleships EVER Produced. I've owned one of the LARGEST Plastic kit models of these ships in 1/250 scale with some Extra Cool goodies such as: Metal barrel guns, metal propellers, and a Laser-ecthed real wood adhesive main deck.....Just Way Cool!! But here's the REAL Takeaway; building these 2 Literal monster's by the Japanese Naval Command was a Complete Waste of Money, Materiel, & Manpower. They were BOTH SUNK inside of their 5 year build dates by Carrier based US Naval warplanes!!! Any & All of their Massive armour could not withstand the Aerial bombardment nor the Torpedo strikes that they were Subjected too. So, all-in-all, because of just how Valuable they were to the Japanese Admiralty, both ships were primarily KEPT OUT OF MOST ACTION to "Preserve & Protect" them!! But in the end they were BOTH found and Destroyed. Hitler took the same attitude towards Bismarck's sister ship, the Tirpitz.....but she was also sunk...at her ANCHORAGE!!
