There is a ton of value in this video. I think you absolutely nailed the pros and cons to each pricing strategy. Any DJ with a question about how they should price their services should watch this. Awesome job Jason!
Great video. Currently I do packages, but have been struggling with it. It made more sense when I had a couple of items that built upon each other (for example: uplighting, and then top tier added moving heads). However I got rid of some items that were just not moving and now my packages just don't seem to make the same sense. It might be time to go the a la carte better. I also like how you mention that packages might devalue the entertainment side of what we do, where a la carte doesn't. We aren't a commodity, but by doing a package, sometimes we get lumped in with the items that are more like a commodity.
Thanks for dropping in Dan! Every once in a while it is good to relook at what you are doing to see if it makes sense or not! Let me know how you make out!
I don't know what category I would fall under but this is how I have it set up. I have basically two setups. A setup for up to 150 people and a setup for up to 250 people. Then I'll add in the lights if the client wants that. So I guess you could say I am A La Carte.
Hi Jason! Can u please update this video? I still do it to eliminate tire kickers, etc. I’m in the MPLS market and there are vey few that have transparency. Is it best to have a range that couples can expect, ala cart, or a mystery where u contact for a quote? Thank u sir!
I’ve always used packages. Four now three. But after watching this I’m thinking my packages are too complicated. I might dummy them up a bit lol. Thanks!!
I am thinking about becoming a mobile DJ, but only offering music services. I don't have the lights, smoke machines etc. but I do have lots of music, a laptop, and a 500 watt Samsung Sound Tower speaker with mic inputs and it is also bluetooth. I plan to get another Samsung Sound Tower speaker to match the one I have so that I can provide a total stereo sound, but my question has to do with what I should charge for just a music service? I purchase my music as well as use music from the online streaming services like UA-cam music, spotify and others not mentioned here, but I am focusing more on purchasing music instead. I want to do this as simply as I can but yet still make a pretty good income from it. I am not interested in all the lighting, smoke machines and such. I just want to play music, but I want to be the best that I can be at it and still make a decent income from doing it. What do you suggest that I do? How much do you suggest that I charge for just a music service and does a music service require a package deal, or an ala cart setup?
Good video! I prefer to provide a hybrid of both packages and a la carte. But I look at it more like base packages and add-ons. Kinda like your fast food analogy…”can I add cheese on that but no mayo 🤮 “ I do not expect the majority of clients to know all the ingredients of a well-made hamburger, but they typically know which combo they want to start with and can readily see the sides availability. They may create their own meal from the add on options if they are so inclined.
A topic that I think would be a good one (and I asked Nick Spinelli the same question) is "How do YOU find the bangers" and I know nothing beats crowed interaction but I would like to know if there is anything else you do, programs/services you use. One way that I find them is (and I kind of stole this idea from Aaron Traylor from Crate Hacker) is I use the "Sort Your Music" function in Spotify. It gives you certain attributes of a song like how danceable it is and how much energy it has and also tells you if a song is happy or not. However, for the energy, I use Mixed In Key. Hope you and your family are doing well and staying safe.
Great idea, I will try to rip it today. Nick did a great video recently on some deep cut ways to find bangers. Super helpful and addresses this straight on!
In my area in SoCal most of the companies out here offer package pricing. I tried doing à la cart, I found it a little bit difficult. But once I offered packaged pricing through my landing page it changed my whole sales process completely for the better! You mentioned something about your DJ’s having their own equipment Jason. I have one question for you.. Let’s say one of your DJs has his own amount of uplights, how do you work that out with your DJ? Do they give you a price can you offer it... ? I ask because some of my guys have their own up lights and sometimes want to offer their lights at different pricing ranges, and I’m trying to get them to all come down to one price all across-the-board. Would appreciate any feedback or advise that you may have that may work for me. TYiA 🙏

Do you price different types of events differently? Weddings, corporate, private, school and etc
Thanks for sharing Jason!

I would focus in on size of room not amount of ppl.

Yeah, he got that idea from me and I have started implementing them. I like to have more than one way to do things.
@@ronniedjronniemmoll3058 That is awesome! Let me see if I can add to the conversation
