"I'd rather use Struggle than Constrict." Wow. That's the most depressing Pokemon related thing I've ever heard. You could say that the Struggle is real. ☠👋
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yes the early game was certainly a Struggle
U win the internet meme wars
Know what's sad? Untill watching any of these videos I never knew struggle was a thing .....lol and the pokémon TCG Gameboy cartridge was the first game I had, the yellow ,blue, red, silver , gold, crystal
Personnaly constricting my neck ia currently a way better alternative for me than struggling through my life. Sadly I have no constrict pp left and no self destruct so I have to keep suffering
I think an alternate name for this video could be:
“This spaghetti monster finishes every clutch battle with 4hp.”
12:40
"This fire type could.."
I think you've done it Scott, I think you've given me an aneurism.
It's obviously a steel/fairy hybrid with dragonic traits
I loved how nonchalantly he slid that one in there
it's almost as if they didnt even consider level 5 tangelas in this game
Indeed, they didn't! There are lots of wacky movesets because they never thought about people hacking the game and getting those Pokémons somewhere other than they were supposed to. Bear in mind that breeding wasn't a thing yet.
That's kind of besides the point. Why did they *remove* a move from its starting pool? Especially when it can be found in Yellow at a level *lower* than 24, so it'd only know Constrict. Who the heck would use a thing they just got in the Safari Zone that ONLY knows Constrict?
@@acumenium8157 Many of the things were not meant to be used, methinks they're only filler so you'd have to trade between versions. An example is the Dragon Type: only one line (3 mons) and a move that can't be STAB.
@@acumenium8157 The tagline is "Gotta catch 'em all" not "Gotta use them all and find them fun and competitively viable". The Safari Zone is, in setting, a place where you can find rare pokemon. Rare isn't the same thing as powerful.
@@Shenaldrac That doesn't answer the question though. Why did they literally REMOVE a starting move for Tangela here when it can't be found at that level in Yellow to begin with?
Tangelas one of my favorite pokemon just cuz its so goofy, out of everything in gen 1 from dragons to rhinos a vine mess with shoes has a chance to k.o them all.
Blue raspberry noodles with boot too big for he gotdam feet wins at a lower level than expected... I wonder if this would have been easier or harder if Tangela was part poison type like the majority of other grass types? It certainly feels very different, which I appreciate. Really goes to show how much early game moves can matter. Good job stringy lettuce.
(👍) must preserve the 69. XD
Constrict should be renamed to “hug” because it does so little damage.
Laughed out loud 😄
I support this change.
Watching this really makes me appreciate how much 4x speed emulation has done for Pokemon, because I can't even imagine doing this in 1x speed. That would be true torture 😰
Indeed. 4x speed is much more livable.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon grimer vs koffing run
Sludge lyfe
Mah dry bread actually said in one of his runs that he doesn't use speed up
During this video when he said he was at like 30 minutes on the Brock split I was like "ouch that's a long time..." And then I remembered he's playing at x4 speed and that makes it feel like a much bigger oof when you realize this would have been a 2 hour slog
For your opening question: yeah, it is not very memorable. But I began to like its design during the years. It is just fun to look at and is one of those Pokémon I would really call a monster, even when it is a goofy one.
Are we going to see a Venomoth run? It will certainly sweep through everything due to its OP psychic/dragon type
I'm pretty sure it's Ghost/Normal type
I thought it was fairy dark
I think Ghost/Fairy is more like it
Did you not just hear him in the video? Obviously it is a fire type
No, look at its colors and moves, it is a psychic and poison type
The first time I saw Tangela it freaked me out, something about the eyes staring out through the dark. Over time it became one of my favourites, so cute and silly looking. Great run Scott!
I can see how you'd think it was freaky. The Red/Blue sprite is slightly horrifying.
I'm not sure if it'll help, but when it comes to the rival's Eeveelution it's important to remember that the game assumes your starter is Pikachu. If you do badly (lose the first fight) it makes the Eeveelution be weak to Pikachu (thus Vaporeon) because you're 'bad', if you win the first fight and the optional fight then clearly you're 'good' so it makes it hard by giving an Eeveelution that resists you (thus Jolteon), and if you skip the 2nd fight then it gives one that's neutral to you (thus Flareon) as while you're not bad you don't explore a lot/couldn't win the second fight. Or think of it as Buttz wanting to style on you by beating your starter with a starter as vulnerable to yours as he thinks he can get away with.
That said, you are right that Vaporeon was the better choice here, Jolteon/Magniton won't have been a big difference here since your grass typing would neuter Jolteon, as you pointed out Ninetails had the better moveset to trap you plus came out early enough that you couldn't mimic a water move to trivialize it while Flareon wouldn't have firespin and would come after Cloyster, and while Vaporeon had the special stat needed to withstand your growth'd mega-drain Cloyster wouldn't have making it so that while it wasn't as much of a threat as Flareon would have been, the Flareon+Cloyster Combo would have been easy to handle while the Vaporeon+Ninetails combo not only gave you a lot of trouble but both of them had a chance to give you a hard time.
This video was a lot of fun though! Sad that Brock was such a pain but it was fun seeing all the decisions being made. Originally I had been certain that Sleep Powder would be neccessary but once you had gotten Growth (which I didn't see originally) it had become clear that Sleep Powder just wasn't consistently viable. Seeing the pros and cons of Mega Drain vs Solarbeam not only considered but also on display in the video was also very nice! Very fun video even despite the difficulties that movepool brought you!
That's a good way to remember the eeveelution paths. That will help a lot if I don't have internet in the future... although I hope that day never comes.
"Terry, **kiss to the heavens** this one's for you!"
The only thing about Gen 1 that confuses me is if Lance is a Dragon Master where’s his Venomoth?
I Dont get that joke
Anything under 3 hours for a pokemon as ill fated in its debut generation as Tangela is impressive to me. Also for Swords Dance and Growth I would imagine it just mockingly powering up by doing ballet in its silly shoes. Meanwhile its spaghetti hair vines exude its Sleep, Paralysis, and Poison inducing powders from its core (the face/head).
It will be a dark day when I have to take longer than 3 hours to finish one of these...
Tangela is cute and funny-looking, but its evolution in the later games scared the crap out of me! Especially when I encountered it in New Pokemon Snap with those loooooong arms... D:
I hope your sewage problem gets worked out soon, but in the meantime, I'm glad it has inspired a Grimer run! :) Looking forward to that!
This one was great. Honestly surprised that it went as smoothly as it did.
By the way, when you eventually try generation three runs, would you be interested in doing a Gorebyss vs. Huntail race? I feel like I completely forgot they existed until I was trying to complete the regional dex in Omega Ruby.
My plans for Gen 3 will make you very happy if you like my versus videos. Not ready to get into details yet though.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Sweet!
Bro I just found your channel a few days ago and I have really been enjoying your content. I even went back and watched some of your old videos. Really so many people are making challenge runs nowadays but somehow you stand out to me.
Your presentation is not fake over enthusiasm or way too low energy. It just flows so naturally. Also I have been liking the jokes.
I heard you say that you not are geared towards competitive but if you know that channel, I think your quality of content is on par with False Swipe Gaming (a competitive history channel, beloved by all competitive players) and has the same quality of being kind of like a podcast and having high re-watch ability. I definitely see your channel blowing up slowly. You completely deserve it as well.
Thanks so much Toga Khan
Koga’s Venonat, the fire-type ace in the sleeve
Tangela was my favorite Pokemon and still is. It is one of the cutest Pokemon ever and the only mono-grass type in Gen 1.
The Brock flying across the screen 😂 19:50
Dude i've been waiting for you to do a Tangela run!!
And you werent kidding, man that start was so rough it wasnt even funny.
I never used Tangela back in the day but seeing as how its a special tank is pretty interesting, great run as always!
Ooooh, Gen 1 Grimer will be interesting. I always liked him, but leveling him up always sucked
"average" 65 base power Sludge (regular Sludge) and getting Mega Drain by TM are big boons to its movepool at least. Unlike unh...Ghost, Dragon, Bug, Flying or other Poison-types not named Muk/Koffing/Weezing in that generation that will have to use TM's as their learn-set.
A jig? Nah, I always imagined Highland dancing, since those folk actually dance around swords ⚔️💃
I'm really sorry to have to tell you this, but since Bind could make such a big difference in the early game, I think you need to do a Red/Blue run to see how it does. Having a move right out the gate that could deal up to 5 damage to Onix probably saves you a half hour at least!
This is the first of your videos that I've decided to watch. So far I'm at Brock and you seem pretty entertaining. Keep it up, man! ^^
Also 4:43 _nice_
12:41 How about *Spaghett Slam?* :D
Spaghett Slam indeed
YES. I was actually going to suggest a Tangela run. Again, I really appreciate you giving Pokémon almost everyone else wouldnt even bother with, a chance at some love. It is definitely so refreshing to see. Personally I would love to see a Cubone/Marowak run or my personal favorite Pokémon, Growlithe/Arcanine run.
Whatever you do, I can't wait to see your next vid. Keep up the good work man. I love your content.
Hey @Chubbs T. I've got Arcanine vs Ninetails and Marowak vs Sandslash planned. They will start as their initial stages in those videos. Not sure when they will be out though. I have many plans and little time.
Those vines are way too strong, bro. How is one supposed to defend themselves against those shoes?! AHHH
3:48 I don't know why but the image of Geodude beating Tangela's semi-face in with it's "rock-hard fists" sent me into laughing fits for some reason. XD
Tangela was my favorite as a kid actually! I never had the games, and only had cards and a guidebook to go off of. It may not be your preferred kind of cute, but you can't deny there's something charming about the shy little critter nwn
Tangela looks like a big ball of dry spaghetti noodles blue food coloring and suction cups for feet. Sounds like something a chef on a bad day would make. Imagine ordering spaghetti and the chef brings this to you with a mean look on his face with glaring eyes daring you to say anything negative about it, lol.
As a kid, I had a tangela on my team when battling my friends. We had terribly optimized Pokemon and the general mentality was "I don't need to have coverage across multiple Pokemon since I already have a Charizard on my team for grass pokemon" so Tangela was an absolute monster against my friends if I had already defeated their Pokemon with fire and ice moves. Growth was so good and I would just set up and destroy their Alakazams and Mewtwos. Didn't use swords dance but body slam was good enough without it being boosted (which I guess it was being boosted but we didn't know about the badge boost glitch). Eventually, I discovered how amazing Parasect was with spore but by that point, we also started to understand that we needed more coverage per Pokemon and that originally overlooked Pokemons were really good with TM movesets.
Still, I have a soft spot for the silly spaghetti monster. Thank you for the entertainment. Your videos always brings up some forgotten childhood memories.
Venomoth is purple. Purple = red + blue. Therefore venomoth = fire/ice type.
Your subs have been sky rocketing recently. So happy to see it happening! Great vidja
Somehow I had a feeling Mimic was going to be used at some point and oh boy; it was a glorious strategy to see in action. I hope you'll be satisfied in knowing that your long suffering against Brock led to another entertaining video, both in that battle and throughout the rest of the video. It was delightful to see the adorable mass of vines get some love, often overlooked due to their late-game only appearances, an for others to notice it's super high Defence and Special stat.
12:32 "He brings put his ace Venomoth and this FIRE type could be scary if I don't KO it"
Lmfao I'm dead. Look you need to make a Venomoth run for a early release on Patreon but it's typing is different the entire script AND each time you change its type the move set that it can lean on the right changes
Also requesting a Raticate run
I enjoy your content. I played these games in like 3rd grade and always enjoyed them for their problem solving aspect. You are taking that to a whole new level and I find it entertaining. God bless!
Tangela was my favourite pokemon when I was a kid, but never used it as was so bad in yellow
man i love this challenge series a lot, i just found you out yesterday, really helped me through tough times currently, keep it up dude 😀
Glad I can help in some small way
Using SolarBeam... in a speedrun... against Ghosts...
Now I've seen everything.
Who would win?
The best trainers in the region.
Or
Ultra vegan spaghetti.
You truly are a pokemon master having beaten Pokemon yellow using just a tangela.
Edge of your seat content once again, well done on always seeing it through until the end!
Hey Scott. I got recommended your content a few days ago on UA-cam, and have been watching all of these. I personally want to see you do a Noctowl run in Crystal as most Flying types do pretty good in GSC (Fearow is a beast).
Hey Cody, I want to do a Noctowl vs Fearow video at some point. A dual of the early game 2 stage birds.
Jeez, I've done two mono flying runs in Generation II and I've avoided Noctowl both times. As for why, it's because Noctowl really doesn't have a great move pool to play with. And it's stats only make it's options seem worse.
Noctowl (Base Stats)
HP: 100
ATK: 50
DEF: 50
Sp. Atk: 76
Sp. Def: 96
Speed: 70

Tackle

Hypnosis

Take Down
Confusion
Dream Eater
To make matters worse Noctowl doesn't even learn confusion until level 41. I suppose Scott could make things a little less painful if he starts with a HootHoot so he can learn confusion at level 34, but he'll still need to get through most of Johto with physical moves on a Pokemon with a lower attack stat than *Tangela's* and no way to even boost that attack stat without using items.
And TMs really don't offer you any form of salvation either since the only special moves Noctowl can learn though them are Thief and Dream Eater. Though, I suppose Scott could make use of hidden power to give himself a useful type coverage by selecting a Noctowl with a specific IV value.

When i was a kid, i once caught a shiny tangela near Pallet in pokemon crystal. It was my first and only shiny pokemon (except for the red gyarados)
I feel like Shiny Tangela's Green Colour for once makes sense. Normally I strongly dislike those green shinies but that one works for me.
Really? You must have been lucky, I've been playing Pokémon since Pokémon Yellow in 1999 (I was 4 at the time-) and my first full-odds shiny wasn't until Pokémon Y, a Shiny Amoonguss
I love it. Mine was a Gligar in Platinum when I was
looking for it for my team. Worked out so well
WOW!!! This guy is great at the game. He really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. The data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
That strange shirtless hiker who somehow snuck into the Elite Four!! 🤣🤣
Shirtless... you know... maybe he's a streaker, running through the competition just trying to show his Onix to everybody.
I'm glad you used Growth. So many people I've seen have overlooked this stat boost in favor of either Amnesia for special or attack. good to see growth get some love.
To be fair, Growth is effectively Clam Mind this generation.
I've always liked tangela, I think it was how cool I thought its original pokemon card looked
What a struggle at the start. Ouch..
Loved the bloopers at the end, and yes Ninetales is a fire fox. Actually, its a Kitsune hence the nine tails.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsune
Also, Shenanagans recently posted a video of a glitchless pokemon red speedrun with commentary. Might be an interesting watch for some of his tech, routing and hidden items picked up. He explains a lot of what he is doing really well.

Right, thats your homework for this week. Looking forward to Grimer pounding Brock next week :P
For some reason, when it mentions Tangela doing Swords Dance, I just imagine it dragging these swords in its vines, and then doing like a sword juggling routine while just watching the foe. Don't know why.
"My strongest move..." You jackass! 😂 Why do you ALWAYS get me with the fast inserts?!
Lmao that edit at 22:15 caught me off guard. If you ever feel like doing Gen 4, I'd be curious to see how the Gen1/2 Evo's like Tangrowth/Gliscor etc. would do timewise in HGSS or DP.
Gen 4 will happen. Slowly adding new games. Gen 3 will be next.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Looking forward to it! Thanks for making quality content 😊

One of my all time favorite pokemon. I'm so so happy to see you do a tangela run. I've loved tangela for as long as I could remember
It may not have been super fast but I think it did a great job!! I'm so happy to see it do well!
Grimer is gonna do well
But it has like 25 base speed... I'm terrified of Giovanni's Dugtrio.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon yeahhhh that dugtrio is just gonna go ham. It should be able to learn acid armor though. I'm wondering if that will help it slip by
You are one of my favourite UA-camrs. I always look forward to your videos. Pokemon Yellow was the first Pokemon game that I played. I had a funny memory.
I was terrible at strategy at that time and could never get past Brock. I thought that something was wrong with my game and rented a copy from the video library and won with someone else's team against Brock I think.
At the time, I felt justified about it being the game, but however long it took me to realise that it was me playing badly, I finally learnt and got better.
Another funny memory is that in Yellow, I used a masterball on Fearow right before going inside to face the Elite 4 as I don't think that I had seen a Fearow or at least remembered that I had seen one. I don't know if I had known about legendaries.
OMG Renting copies of Pokemon games. I was just thinking about telling a couple stories about that in an upcoming video. What a time.
I also felt my game was broken when I couldn't get through Mt. Moon. I was so frustrated I didn't eat dinner or breakfast. Around noon I finally got through and then I ate a giant celebratory meal.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon It was an amazing time. I loved those days. I would travel around in the game, going on a grand adventure. It was a big part of my childhood.
When I watch your videos, I am reminded of those times where I would be exploring in the game and learning more and more about it.
When you take the hidden nugget from copycats room you are stealing
I'm okay with it. She's rich :P
Oh dear, I salute you for going through this. The NotFlyingSpaghettiMonster had to be my heartbrake of Red back in the day. I was so happy when I finally found the bugger, managed to catch him, hoped that since he's so endgame he has to be this absolute monster and all I got was this.
Was honestly surprised at the E4 though. He did better than anticipated.
I was surprised too. By both his stats and his late game performance. The bulk in combination with growth is a really powerful.
Super enjoyed the run!
I'll try to comment every new video. :)
I always like Tangela when I was young but that was prob because of the og pokemon card. I wonder if Tangrowth makes it a better pokemon.
Also if you ever do trainer theme runs I'd love to see Kris...since..ya know. Lmao.
Hope the sewer issue isnt too bad to fix.
Cheers mate.
Tangela isn't my favorite pokemon, but I've always been rather fond of it for several reasons. First and foremost, it's location in the wild is the patch of grass on Route 21. Oh the anticipation of finding out what pokemon were hidden in that inaccessible little corner of Kanto! Second, for whatever reason, tangela is one of a small number of pokemon that can choose to flee from battle. I'm not sure why it shares this trait with legendary monsters, but it continues to intrigue me to this day. A tertiary consideration for me, both as a youngster and an adult, is that tangela was given the boon of pure-typing, in a generation lousy with flying and poison dual-types.
12:40 A name for Tangela's Body Slam? Hmm... How about Spaghetti Smash?
Also Tangela can learn Swords Dance because lookit! The spaghetti armies! He has so many!! Perfect for Dancing with the Blades!!!
Never was a favorite, but I figured Tangela's stats were good enough to win. Totally was. Awesome vid.
Tangela is and will be my favourite Pokémon of all time
Ah yes, Tangela. The silly shoes itself was pretty much a meme until Tangrowth showed up and became quite the tank with a lot of versatility. Though, Eviolite Tangela is no joke either.
One could say Tangela got a huge buff in Gen IV.
Jynx is a crit machine in this playthrough!
“You don’t need internet to go outside” I had to pause but that one got me
Real quote. Thanks Dad ;)
Tangela has always been one of my favourites, I really appreciate all the fun and weird designs in Pokémon, especially my little spaghetti friend! I always thought Tangela would've been a Grass/Dark type if it was introduced in generation 2 instead, maybe that would've helped it more than being pure Grass does?
Grass Dark would be so cool.
They really should've done that when Gen 2 came out. Magnemite became a Steel-Type, and Tangela should've become a Dark-Type. Kanto has zero native Dark types.
Nice run! Just one suggestion, in the Rival fight you could try copying Earthquake from Sandslash instead of Slash, it's super effective against Ninetales and it might also one-shot Alakazam due to higher BP than Body slam.

Silly String Slap 🎉✨
This faster beginning in the video is pretty nice, not saying the usual rules gave a smooth touch to the video
Glad it worked! I am trying to get into gameplay footage asap. I can talk about the regular stuff while we watch the game instead of over an intro screen.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon it's better like this butterscott, just another amazing video!
I’m sooooo excited for this!!! You’re my fav poke tuber !!
Love your videos, trying to catch em all as long as i have time. Would love to see you do a baby only challenge as it would be very different from your usual 1 poke only ones. And i know how much you love your low stat first stage evos. Keep up the good work it's the most entertaining challenge videos ive seen so far and ive seen quite a bit of them.
The Stantler booty slam really made me smile. His strongest move indeed:-)
Scott: ... giving me another turn to finish off the fire fox.
Me: What, did you defeat a browser? :)
I have the sitting cuites tangela plush and shes adorable. I absolutely adore the scrapped tangela family from the gen 2 beta too
Body slam? More like Spaghetti Squash!
...I’ll see myself out now
Terry the Tangela feels excluded when you implied it wasn't anyone's favorite.
I always liked tangela. It was my kid brother's favorite, but he was too little to play the games then so he only knew it from the cards. I was so happy when they added tangrowth, tangela could have been doomed to obscurity otherwise.
Love your content. As always, can't wait for more.
I think my favorite of your content is the gen 2 runs with underused pokemon. There are so many weird pokemon without evolutions (back then) introduced in that gen. Even a lot of the evolved ones are kind of bad if not just terrible.
I'm really enjoying make that series right now too. More coming very soon :)
As Always Awesome Job My Friend!! Well done persevering pass Brock who made your palms sweaty, knees weak and arms heavy, who time and time again had you start with vomit on your sweater already, Tangela's Spaghetti.
I always like how you explain everything or try to. You know what I’m patiently waiting for lol. Keep it up.

Great video Scott! I think it would be cool to see your actual stats for important fights instead of the base stats, maybe you wanna give this a try.
Insane amount of work to do it manually. But I may be able to get it working automatically in the future. Great idea. I was thinking of at least displaying DVs/IVs so it's clear when a Pokemon is perfect or when it's not. (in this case Tanegla wasn't perfect).
Woah woah woah! Right from the start I’ve got a huge problem. I thought Tangela looked super cool as a kid (gen1 sprite is 👌)!
“Ring my Chimecho” really sounds like an innuendo for something…
;)
Body spaghetti! I love spaghetti in my body! I have never been fond of Tangela though! I can’t believe it got an evolution and Dunsparce didn’t!
I wish you good luck scott this will no doubt be painfull to imagine doing on my gameboy copy of leaf green
Giggling every time you say "pee pee" is part of my watching experience
Venomoth will be exceptionally challenging this run. Considering its a fire/ice type!!
Ahh. Got home from a short road trip and get to relax and watch this video. Really nice
i also gotta add that, how crazy is it that you make a girafarig video just a month ago basically, then 3 weeks later, pokemon shuffle team adds girafarig into the special stages, you must have caused this since girafarig is such a obscure pokemon its insane
Watching your videos has inspired me to do a speed run of my own with Gastly/Haunter. The rules aren't as strict but I'll eventually conform to a set of rules.
Rules sort of get figured out as you go. I used to have less strict rules too.
I called my Tangela Eminem because mom's spaghetti.
Poor Tangela. You did the best you could early game, and watching solar beam rock was exciting :)
Going to put out a vote for Oddish--for my girlfriend. The Weed Pokemon is her favorite :)
one thing to note: a long pre-brock grind is usually very helpful because you get so many EVs early on, they don't make a huge difference early, but at higher levels the stat boosts are HUGE from this.
Yes. This is very true. You can even maximize it by training against only level 2 Pokémon to minimize experience. The area west of viridian is pretty good for this.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon seen it many times when people were making runs with Pokémon that struggled against Brock, they usually end up outperforming later on when the lack of EVs starts to catch up to Pokémon that do well early.
Am I the only one who always feels like dewgong is flipping you the bird in its sprite in yellow?
It really cracked me up when you called Bruno a hiker :D thx again for great content as always
Welcome David!
Hold! You have committed crimes against Scott and his Girlfriend by uttering the name of the dark lord! What say you in your defence?
You were right about calling Ninetails a dog, it's in the same family
Game freak: gives gen 1 Tangela awesome stats
Also game freak: doesn’t gives it good moves
To be fair, that tends to be the case with most of the grass types in generation one.
Edit: I'm referring to their movesets.
