    All due respect to many of other videos on here demonstrating this technic. This one was the easiest to follow and understand. Can't wait to practice. Thank you....👍🏻

    Ok, well.... I have finally reached the point of when I'm looking for fly fishing videos to learn something new or brush up on.... I look first to see if I can find a RIO video so I can learn it from Simon! really no point in looking beyond that, Simon is hands down one of the best instructor/teachers there is. (and I have watched MANY) I am always amazed at how clearly and completely he explains every subject he teaches. Outstanding video again. Thank you Simon and thanks to RIO for giving us this outstanding opportunity to learn from him.

    40 years of fishing fresh water, I never thought I needed a double haul, now I'm 10 years into Chesapeake Bay fishing with an 8 that I can generally get to where it needs to be, but the heavy flies and predictable wind make this old dog need a new trick. Thanks for the knowledge, it's much needed.

    Great explanation. I've been flyfishing for 7 years now and have purposely avoided this technique because I thought it was too hard. Thanks to this tutorial I think I can finally nail it. :)

    Great refresher Simon, I came for a casting course with your Dad many years ago and stayed in his beautiful house, fishing at Stafford Moor lake. I remember you from that time, you had a comp casting rod you called Big Banger!

      Hi Colin, we passed on your comments to Simon, who wrote back to say the following: "Hi Colin, thanks for bringing back some great memories of a wonderful time of my life. It is wonderful to hear from you and to relive those days a little. Sadly, both "Big Banger" and "Little Banger" were left behind in England when I moved to the US 18 years ago - much to my now great regret. I hope the casting and double haul are still working for you, and wish you continued success and enjoyment of his wonderful sport. Best regards, Simon."

      Hi Simon, Yes Golden Days indeed, those few days under your Dads instruction served me well over the years, I am sure many of the better fish in put and take lakes soon learn to stay out of range of most fisherman's flies, those extra yards using the double haul sure puts more on the bank. Sadly Stafford Moor is no longer a trout fishery!

    Great video - I would suggest adding step #5 and creating a "guide" with your hauling hand (finger/thumb) to allow the shooting line to feed through to manage line and control distance. I get longer and more consistent distance with the ability to gently slow and/or pinch off my shot.

    If I may suggest, when learning to double haul, practice the single haul first until you are comfortable with the timing then add the second haul.

    You don't need a shooting head! You don't need slick shooter! It doesn't have to be Rio! You do need to master the technique! That said, I have many Rio products - and they are quality! Better to master the technique with whatever you have - then get the high end equipment! A beginner violinist probably probably shouldn't start with a Messiah Stradivarius! That said, I am selling one - for 20K, and it will improve your fly casting and your life! Buy it! Lol 😆

    If your not adding line during the DH, then what are you gaining by doing it? Speed?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  4 роки тому +2

      You certainly can add line at this point, if you need to lengthen the line in the air, and as long as you aren't lengthening a WF type line with too much running line and lose stability. If you don't you most certainly do gain line speed - through increased tension in the line and, therefore, flex in the rod.

    So when is the proper time to let the fly line feed out?

  • @onemorething100
    @onemorething100 4 роки тому +2

    So you are saying I can only double haul with Rio shooting head line??

    • @pr0faker
      @pr0faker 4 роки тому +2

      no its pretty universal to which lines you can use this with, but the best lines to use it with are shooting heads/ lines that you use to get a bit more distance with than with a single haul cast, not only those of rio but they obviously put their own products in as example.

    Excellent learning video. Does this work with light and heavy flys? How well does it work without a shooting line? Thanks

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  Рік тому

      It does work with both light and heavy flies, plus shooting lines! It's a great skill to learn! Cheers!

    I'm a newbee to this sport and I really enjoy Simon's teaching style. I assume that the double haul is a way to get more controlled power in my rod so that I can cast further. When is the best time to release the line to take advantage of of all that increased power? Thanks.

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  2 роки тому

      Glad you enjoyed it, thanks. Yes, double haul will give you more distance, no doubt. It will also mean you can ease off the amount of power your rod uses, which is where you become very smooth and effortless. You want to release the line on the last forward cast the moment the haul has finished and the rod has stopped. Hope that helps...

    When setting up to learn the double haul, how much line do you put out.? I would think about twenty to thirty feet

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  5 місяців тому

      Spot on, usually start with the head of the line!

    Very good Simon, in fact exceptionally good . . . . I think.
    But you'll have to do something about covering those legs.

  • @robertvivian8100

    Great video Simon, just one thing when you say feed on the on the back cast and forward cast ,do you leave the line go through your hands then stop it to go to the next stage in the cast,thanks again from Robert Vivian

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  5 років тому +1

      Sometimes you do, Robert. If your line is too short to make the final cast, you can let some slip through your fingers on your back cast or forward cast (or both), but once you have the right amount of line and load, you don't let any more slide through.
