Oh My God! Tyler you opened up my mind! Man, I have been improving so much. I have now started to know my way around the neck. If you're reading this, Keep shredding! You Rock! All of us together are building a new modern rock era! Tell the kids real music's Back! 🤘
My favorite power chords are very Megdaeth. The first being the chromatic use of the major third, and the second is the spider chord. Which is more of a technique than a chord, but I still think it's a fun way to add excitement to some otherwise lackluster power chords.
Your lessons have always helped me break out of the box I have been in for years. I have brought a lot of depth to my music. I hope one day we can jam together!
Whenever I hear the stacked 5th, I automatically think of Anthrax. Even when you played it, sounded like the intro to Anthrax's Caught in the MOSH, great song
Very cool video Tyler! There's is also the "The Edge" Power chord, variant of the EJ one, played on the G and B string (eg 12th and 13th fret), and that you can extend (12th on G, 15th on B)
Love your guitar illustration keep up the good work and keep rocking man !! i have been learning guitar since age 12 and it's little bit hard for me to get know the power chords but im learning acoustic guitar ...
Octave power chord. Major 3rd + octave power chord. Inverted power chord (root + minor 3rd) Diminished power chord (root+flat 5 + octave + another flat 5 octave if you feel crazy)
That sus4 power chord is also used in the theme song for Top Gun. Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone". You refer to is as a stacked 5th so now I know another name for it. Thank you for all of your teaching. You rock!
Always love your vids really enjoyed this one though knowing how most of these songs or genres sound I guess I’ve never really thought about how these change tone It will be hard not to visualize them now when I hear these tones Most excellent :D ty
Some power chords that were left out are chords involving a root-third interval, such as playing a major or minor third one string up, or playing a root-5th power chord with the index finger moved one fret down (which is basically an inverted root-3rd), which I call a ".38 Special power chord".
Shawn for President I watched that too. Never thought of using power chords in that way before. Adding the major 3rd is too big of a stretch for my short fingers though :/
You can definitely get the monster chord tone of JP with mostly stacked 5ths...it makes a 6 string sound like a pseudo 7 too. JP single handidly took my chord and lead playing to the next level.
I love the fact that you change guitar for every chord! I think that thats half the fun, different guitar/sound/vibe, adds flavor! And I guess the haters that criticis you for it, is probably jealous :D
Great video. Two that I'd add are the "D-shaped" power chord and the "C-shaped" power chord. I use the D power chord as much as any of the others. The C power chord is basically the same as the verse from Crazy Train.
I think stacked power chords can also be used to play bar chords like in a drop tuning, (barring only the sixth and fifth strings). This is useful for me if I want to play chuggy drop A power chord riffs but still staying at E standard. tuning.
Nice vid, I would have also included the cobain chord (which is where you add a 4th on top of the octave on a normal power chord) gives a really messy sound that I love with fuzz pedals
yea.. Incubus was second band that came to my mind about this type of chords.. the first what I imagined was Last Resort by Papa Roach.. I know that they are playing it in drop D with different holding, but the sound and notes are actually the same when you play it in standard this way.. I think it's better to play it in standard D in every way, it's surer.. with drop D that does not feel really great when you have to hold powerchord from the second string + somehow the bottom string
Add drop D tunning and you have every Tool song ever created lol. I ended up moving these shapes around and came out with Lateralus and Jambi. Rock on Tyler!
SchwartzerAdler I’m not sure if I’m correct but I think it’s the lack of the 3rd of the chord, which removes any major and minor. Either that or the ability to use the same chord shape all around most of the guitar on standard tuning.
Power chord is basically a triad with the 3rd ommited. They are often called 5 chords because usually it's a root 5th and octave. You can add other intervals just not the 3rd.
Yea I think it’s because the 5th is dominant, so usually gives neither a Major or minor sound when used between the octave and root. Correct me if i’m wrong aha
Just subscribed. Great video. I have a question. I hope you reply. How do you record your videos. Do you plug straight into a console on your computer or an efx console like an AXE, or do you have an iPhone interface, etc? Your video looks and sound great.

Music is Win you should do an all power chord song!
Sick t-shirt tyler love it!
Hey Tyler. I know that you’re a huge PRS fan. What do you think of the CE24?
Achieve the level of Super Shredjin 3!
What the hell all power chords are the same
Best thumbnail so far!!

Solomon Konwar That’s the attitude man
Yes it truly is 😂
What defines real music though?
George Simmons a Synth loop with vocals that don’t have a meaning.
Superwin Ova Sad but not true
Do u use all those guitars to mock me?
Do i need a different guitar for a different power chord?
Well spotted, I noticed it wasn't really explained properly in the video but most definitely, you'll come into difficulties later on if not.
I have 2 so I can play 2 different power chords, my life is changing so fast
Hence the Fender 9 neck power chord monster at Namm 2018! Future thinking right there!
You need a short scale shredder with a paper thin neck to play the add 9 chord anyways
Lonely Child what hahaha no you don't. what convinced you of this? This is easily achieved on big fat fender necks with a standard scale.
Power Chords: The Metal and Rock Guitarist's Weapon of Choice \m/
Right next to: E pentatonic minor
indeed
Hey Tyler, I want to tell you that thanks to you I have taken my guitar again to practice and not just play random things
My favorite power chords are very Megdaeth. The first being the chromatic use of the major third, and the second is the spider chord. Which is more of a technique than a chord, but I still think it's a fun way to add excitement to some otherwise lackluster power chords.

Thanks a lot! I'm gonna use these in the Tournament of Power when I'm fighting Yamcha.
This is so great for someone who's stuck in a rut composing similar riffs ... This will help add so much flavour ! Thanks Tyler
Whenever I hear the stacked 5th, I automatically think of Anthrax. Even when you played it, sounded like the intro to Anthrax's Caught in the MOSH, great song
I'm so glad you mentioned Incubus with the stacked 5th. That type of sound made me want to play guitar, especially with Pardon Me. That and AC/DC.
This was fun and informative. I loved how you referenced familiar songs and then jammed using the cords. Good job.
Really great lesson, thanks Tyler! Loving GSS and the Modern Rock Techniques too. Love your work!
Thanks for the awesome tip! I knew many of these power chords, but that add9 power chord was definitely new for me. Many thanks! Keep rocking dude.
This is the ultimate video about power chords I was looking for. Simply amazing dude, really helpful
Great vid Tyler! Been a player for 20 years and you just taught me a thing or two, thanks!
Dig your vids, man. Some of them are quirky and fun, but you're also a very good teacher. Thanks for your channel.
bought your guitar super system level 1. so far so good
How muchwas it?
29.99 CAD
so what
Very informative, I was tired of just using the basic with the higher octave root, this is a lot to work with.
This is the power chord video I've been looking for, for quite some time now. Thanks!
Definitely going to have fun with the EJ power Chord shown at the end love that sound 😊
Thank You Sooooo much, keep up the good word and have a nice week.!
Very cool video Tyler! There's is also the "The Edge" Power chord, variant of the EJ one, played on the G and B string (eg 12th and 13th fret), and that you can extend (12th on G, 15th on B)

Thanks for this video. I didn't learn anything knew but you are entertaining, so it's a win.
Octave power chord.
Major 3rd + octave power chord.
Inverted power chord (root + minor 3rd)
Diminished power chord (root+flat 5 + octave + another flat 5 octave if you feel crazy)
Meshuggapeth I see you on nik’s channel too😂
There is no such thing as a major 4th only perfect, augmented or diminished.
Thank you so much Tyler ! It will make me try so much different ways of music writing
Dude i was just looking up power chords for songs and you uploaded this right when i needed it
Thanks Tyler for this amazing power chord lesson.
awesome different power Cordes been playing for 10 years wow thank you!
ive been playing guitar for 35 years and never had as much gear as you. I really like some of your solo lines and improvs good stuff
That sus4 power chord is also used in the theme song for Top Gun. Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone". You refer to is as a stacked 5th so now I know another name for it. Thank you for all of your teaching. You rock!
Depends on the musical context that you use it. I guess you could think of an inversion of a normal powerchord, or a sus4, like you said.
Great lesson Tyler, keep up the good work man!
Thanks. Another great video. Your channel is the best channel for theory learning!
Always love your vids really enjoyed this one though knowing how most of these songs or genres sound I guess I’ve never really thought about how these change tone
It will be hard not to visualize them now when I hear these tones
Most excellent :D ty
For me, this video was very helpful. Thanks a lot!
Fantastic Video. Great Job Tyler....thanks. Nice PRS’s. Just got me a 408 👍
enjoyed that. So many other things to use, ive always just used the first two.
Great man, been playing same 2 types for ages. Now I'll give those others a whirl 🤘
Wow! Love the stacked 5th powerchord! Sounds very chunky!
wow definitely ADD9 and STACKED 5TH are my favorites, so prog and heavy!!
Some power chords that were left out are chords involving a root-third interval, such as playing a major or minor third one string up, or playing a root-5th power chord with the index finger moved one fret down (which is basically an inverted root-3rd), which I call a ".38 Special power chord".
Thanks a lot man, you showed me other types of Powerchords very useful for metal
His power chord level is over 9000!!!!!
Great instruction & playing!
Great! Going to work on those Hendrix and EJ PChords for sure!
Talking about efficiency... SSJ3 is not exactly the most efficient form as it drains one's stamina very fast.
Nice! Some new techniques to learn and add to my repertoire.
Have y’all ever tried to cover three strings with a finger and play them most metal power cord I ever heard!!!
Thanks! I got a couple new ideas from this
John petrucci just had a video where he talks about the add 9 and how it was his take on a meaty power chord instead of a bar chord.
Great video, much appreciated.
Thank you mate! Needed some new power chords :D
Great video. Two that I'd add are the "D-shaped" power chord and the "C-shaped" power chord. I use the D power chord as much as any of the others. The C power chord is basically the same as the verse from Crazy Train.
Love the Danelectro guitars!
Wow, you’ve just unleashed the power of power chords for me!
I think stacked power chords can also be used to play bar chords like in a drop tuning, (barring only the sixth and fifth strings). This is useful for me if I want to play chuggy drop A power chord riffs but still staying at E standard. tuning.
Very nice. You can hear the sound of a C# Maj Add 9 in Van Halen's 5150.
Show us your synths that are laying back there on your desk! Would really like to know what models you got there!
One of the most musical examples of the add9 power chord is Buckethead's song "Siege Engine"
Wow! This video is extremely useful in helping us write better rock music!
Cheers mate, you are a genious!
I came for Goku stayed for guitar, thats that's a powerful combo!
Wow, this was very helpful!
Cool lesson Tyler. Glad you broke out your Strat and Dano.
not only is this good for guitar players, it is very good for bass players who want to boost power chords with they're bass lines thank you!
Bought your guitar super system 1 and 2 and your modern rock. But im still on guitar super system 1. So far so good
great lesson thank u so much, for share it.
Nice vid, I would have also included the cobain chord (which is where you add a 4th on top of the octave on a normal power chord) gives a really messy sound that I love with fuzz pedals
Why'd you use goku
Edwin Samuel because POWER
Edwin Samuel Cuz Yamcha is too powerfull to be in the tumbnail
Why not?
galahad38 you know it's clickbait cause he used ss4 form and not ssgb form
Camgrow red yep so powerful that we couldn't even detect this coming
Damn!
I loved this video...!!
Dude, thank u...
Awesome, thank you

Love the guitar!
Great stuff thanks Man.
great job i was just wondering about power chords
*_Pigs can sniff out truffles with their snouts._*
WUT DA BUTT
Thank you! Thank you!
I like the "Brian May" power chord (root, fifth, third). It adds colour but still has that raw simple sound of a power chord.
best example of the add 9 power chord in a fairly popular metal song is Floods by Pantera. Dime uses it in the main riff, and the epic beginning solo
Add drop D tunning and you have every Tool song ever created lol. I ended up moving these shapes around and came out with Lateralus and Jambi. Rock on Tyler!
Great video!
Awesome!!!😱
“Cita en el Quirofano” by PXNDX has a really cool riff with the add9 power chord. When I first heard it it was heavy af
At times I play the stacked 5th on the 4 lighter strings cuts through pretty good.
Very usefull thanks!
Neat music room!
Quite helpful 🙌🙌🙌
Awesome stuff
Great. Video yet again.
The first thrash-thing sounds like Thrown To The Wolves by Death Angel, awesome song!
cool ! PRS sound super !
You just made my 7 string feel like a 10. Open Chords are the future
What exactly makes a power chord a power chord in the first place? Is it just this combibation of root and fifth?
SchwartzerAdler I think so
SchwartzerAdler I’m not sure if I’m correct but I think it’s the lack of the 3rd of the chord, which removes any major and minor.
Adi Adi you are correct the 5 is dominant so it doesn't lean towards minor or major it stands in its own hence called dominant
awesome video.
Just subscribed. Great video. I have a question. I hope you reply. How do you record your videos. Do you plug straight into a console on your computer or an efx console like an AXE, or do you have an iPhone interface, etc? Your video looks and sound great.
