You actually have to be a professional sailor to be part of a crew of the most important boats that take part to these events. Generally, it isn't impossible, cause the smaller boats owners try to find new parts of the crew, usually with good experience (regattas, races...) you probably can embark if you know a shipowner and contact him talking about your availability. To be honest, it is not that difficult, as it could be for example driving an f1 car if you're not a very good driver. This type of example fits perfectly fot America's Cup or Volvo Ocean Race, where you have to be one of best sailors in the world to compete. As I sayd before, it's not impossible, it depends on how strong you want to achieve you're objective.
