@@KenLasaine Yea, you are right. Because it was just before I joined Thad's band in 1978. And this record was already out, I got it before I even moved to NYC.
Hank Jones at 5:05 queuing up the circle of fourths subs with just TWO beats, and Ron Carter catching it immediately. Never ceases to amaze me. Ron is the ultimate. Non-human ears
Seeing your comment made me listen for this, and it seems like Hank Jones does a similar thing at other parallel spots earlier in the piece too, at about 1:48 and 3:32 for instance.
@@ChromaticHarp dude, why be an ass? Jazz is fun music but it is indeed also a rich language that musicians like to geek over. He is a musician and he's pointing out things that immediately rushed to listen to out of my own curiosity.
The name of the record is Mel Lewis and friends. Ron Carter on bass. Mel Lewis drums. Freddie Hubbard trumpet, Hank jones piano, Michael Brecker tenor saxophone, Cecil Bridgewater trumpet and Gregory Herbert tenor and alto saxophones.
This track should not be listed as a Michael Brecker track. It is from the "Mel Lewis and Friends" album, on the Horizon label, released in 1976. If you listen to the track, you'll hear that drummer Lewis, pianist Hank Jones (Thad's brother), bassist Ron Carter, and flugelhornist Freddie Hubbard (1st solo) had at least as much to do with it as Brecker (tenor sax). The album is an exceptional jazz combo recording.
This is mis-labeled.... While Michael Brecker is indeed playing on this, it appeared on a record called "Mel Lewis and Friends", under drummer Mel Lewis' leadership
the st thomas quote is so well placed so logically placed, just when they change to the swing groove. Fine taste he got. I’m a huge fan of Lee Morgan, but Freddie Hubbard is the real deal
It annoys me when uploaders and Brecker Fan Boys don't name videos properly. This is a few examples of Michael Playing the with one of the greatest trumpet players to walk the face of the earth Freddie Hubbard and the the uploader chooses to credit this video sorely to Michael???
Michael Brecker !! What a solo❤
1:13 Freddie with the sick St. Thomas Quote

loving that St. Thomas quote in the trumpet solo! haha

Charlie Parker is turning in his grave......because he couldn't join this insanely talented band. Love it!

Yes, I don't get all your terminology but the bass following the piano run is certainly very impressive. What are "subs" please?
@@benmcdonnell4167 substitutions ::) or subtitles :)

I love the way Ron Carter pulls the whole thing sideways during the trading at the end!
LOVE that sound of the vinyl right at the start 0:00 ... that and Brecker's tone both always make me happy :)
Mel Lewis and friends
Michael Brecker - tenor sax
Freddie Hubbard - trumpet
Hank Jones - piano
Ron Carter - bass
Mel Lewis - drums
I whish that kind of friends. A dream team.
Tremendo Freddie Hubbard!
if i could just magically sit down and play the drum chart like this i would be so happy!
Fraiture there's a way to do it without magic: practice
you'll get there o'm sure you're there now
cool feel, like the minor pentatonic stuff at the start of Michael Brecker's solo, and then the tri-tone subs over the bridge very cool ideas.
Nobody cares about that!

Fitzgerald. ..this is actually from a wonderful A&M/Horizons release, "Mel Lewis & Friends", a sorely under-sung gem of the '70's.
Go Freddie! Awesome solos...
Great tune Missing our legends of Jazz
Thank you so much, this is amazing!! I didn't knew this version, what a line up, they are all sublime
My favorite recording of Moose the Mooche. Good stuff

The album was entitled Mel Lewis and Friends with Thad Jones doing the arranging.

I wonder if Hank Jones ever played Moose the Mooche with Charlie Parker?
Elvin’s brother too.

Some skunk funk? No, moose funk!
Checked your transcription page Sumner. Great stuff and great solo's you have transcriped. Thank you!
such a groove :)

See astronomicato's reply above. The record came out on A&M in 1976.
st thomas
I agree
I heard that too
yeah 1:13
Please correct the title of this video! This is not Mike's record, nor is he the sole musician in this phenomenal group.
I have this album on vinyl. I wish I could find a digital recording of the whole album. Some great cuts on it.
Calypso Skunk Funk Moose 😆
Mejor que mejor...

@Tritone217
i know what u mean. sometimes when he solos it's technically genius but it's not something that's easy to digest.
👍 😊 nice
Thanks. I
Funky!
@3:20..AAAAHHHHHHH
Is the trumpet player Freddie Hubbard?
+AJ Jazz yep
Is a bear catholic?
LOL! And the sax player is Boots Randolph!
What record is this from? Who are the sideman? Please respond.
🌱💐😉🎶🌲
bears aren't Catholic
I belive you are correct, sir.
They are however furry.
Do they s**t in the woods?
What does that mean?
anyone knows where this is from?
I just put my transcription of Brecker's solo up on my website. Check it out! Link is in my profile.
Lol I would love to know who's idea it was to switch back and forth from swing to hiphop😂
I can tell you! I was a fly on the Wall! It was the idea of Bif ‘Spud’ Jamushubu!!
Wonderful playing. Does anyone know who's playing piano, and trumpet on this track please?
Hank Jones, this is one of those great lost albums, never made it to digital. Mel Lewis and friends.
@@dahollan Thanks for the info.
Bird's the word...but not bad
Brecker sounds a lot like Trane in places.
+TheBebopper main influence
+Fitzgerald's Anticks yeah
That’s because when he was a little boy, coltrane would dress up as Santa clause on Christmas Eve and bring michael cookies and milk.
groovy shit
Parker 🤔 great player but Mike was genius !!!
So?
So what
Miles Davis lol
Who is on the piano?:)
Hank Jones

Hanlon's razor: ""Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."
I get tired of all the scales Brecker plays. Everybody else is playing melodies. When you've finished listening to this, listen to Bird's recording.
