_oh. my. god._- I didn't think anyone else knew this movie existed. I was obsessed with it for a short period of time and had completely forgotten until now.
The fact that i still remember This movie just for The death scene (tm) almost 5 years later, just shows you how traumatizing but great that scene it was.
Not really fish, but there's a fact I do like about Dolphins intelligence: Some dolphins do help lost people at sea to return to the shore. This because they're so smart that are capable of althruistic conducts: Helping others feels good ^^ At the same time, they've shown hostility to other species for no apparent reason. Not territorial, no lack of food, they just seem to hostile, just because they can Intelligence is the capability for both good and evil
As a kid growing up in Denmark, I watched this movie SO much as a kid, it took me years to learn that I had an english dub since I always watched in Danish. Its one of my all time favorite kids movies
I think instead of kids film, it is better calling it an animated film since it is considered a hidden honorable + interesting gem when it comes to the field of danish animation, makes more sense?
Help, I'm a Fish is (obviously) more popular in Denmark and other Northern European countries, like my home country Finland. I did see Help, I'm a Fish once when I was a kid and I even rewatched it several months ago. Help, I'm a Fish is definitely an interesting experience.
As a German, I agree. I watched this movie like a week ago when I woke up from a dream and one of my first thoughts was this movie, even though I haven't thought about it for years. Anyway, I found the DVD ridiculously easy, and I love this movie, especially cause it is not American- Also, this video essay was great and gave it more depth. They made a great movie even better (Stella is adorable and I wanna adopt her-)
So Joe is a Pilot Fish, his natural state is guiding/directing others (Specifically sharks technically). One could make the connection that given too much of the de-fish potion, his natural state was exaggerated to an insane level (Especially since he indulged in it more than he gave to others, cementing his place as a leader).
I only watched this movie a few times as a kid, but it did impact me so that, to this day, any seahorse toy or stuffed animal is immediately named “Sasha” to me I also had the body horror of the bad guy’s death burned into my head, but mostly in a “woah, what a cool climax” way
H- how do you keep doing this? Did we share the same childhood? You keep finding these movies I watched as a kid and thought everyone else had forgotten about! Like the movie '9' with the creepy puppets/dolls. It was a 10 minute animation first and became a whole movie. Or Jack and cuckoo clock heart. A french musical that just... captivated me as a kid. It's dark, but that's why I loved it.
Oh god, as a kid who was wanted to be a marine biologist and had a weird fascination with the macabre, I absolutely loved this and watched it on rEPEAT, NOT A JOKE. even did fanart a while back XD
For me, there's only 2 movies I would say "that wasn't a fever dream?" One is "the last unicorn" Just because the only thing I could remember was the ending where burst out of the sea foam The second one is "cat city" that's... a weird spy thriller that wants to be way more violent that it's allowed
@@magitek09 it's about a kind of insect like monster being rumored to be loose in paris, and this singer finds him (i think) and feels sympathy for him, because he has a beautiful voice and loves music like her basically!
Same! But not with Cat city because it's still really popular in Hungary where it was made, and I'm Hungarian. Also it's an adult cartoon, that's why it's violent sometimes ( but it can be viewed by kids because it's not that brutal ).
I watched it as a kid when I was a really small kiddo because I saw it at Blockbuster and thought it looked interesting. In the hispanic release, it's called "Mamá, soy un pez"
I saw this movie on a TV at a restaurant. It was muted but it looked really interesting to me but I was never able to find it but seeing this video brought back those memories
I can not belive you dug this up for the depth of my subconcious. I have watched this movie one and a half time because it scared me so god damn much. I haven't watched it in like 13 years but I still own the dvd and know where it is.
Ayy this movie is from my country, partially at least. I kinda wanna thank you for lighting some attention on this movie as it has always been a childhood favorite, and we Danes like when our media gets international attention. I haven’t been able to appreciate it much from an adult perspective, other than acknowledging the rather unsubtle authoritarian tones of the villain and the sadly relevant plot detail about global warming (oof). But this review also made me appreciate it from an artistic standpoint and the characters arcs. I am bit surprised however that you didn’t mention the rather emotional charged relationship between Stella and her seahorse friend, which probably was a gateway for sapphic interests for little 7 year old me. So yeah, great video!
Ohhhh this movie is fricking nostalgic. It brought back memories I didn't even know I still had. This movie just brings me huge summer vacation vibes because of the aesthetic, colours, and the kids trying to find something to do.
The fact that this movie was the start of me kearning about global warming… also never realising that it was from my country until me and my friend talked about it.
as a kid this movie introduced me to so many cool themes that have stuck with me like the aesthetic and what it says about how losing everything can teach us about finding ourselves thanks for reminding me of it, i really like your analysis with the weather i didnt even notice that it just kind of subtly added to the movie
this movie is legit one of my first memories. i was 3yo when my mom took me to see it in the cinema and the only thing i remembered was the seahorse turning into a real horse (i loved horses, it was great). then years later, at one sleepover with some friends i brought it up like "hey do you remember that movie or was that a fever dream" annnd we ended up watching it. we had an awful time and i just remember their dead faces after it finished. this video makes me wanna watch it again tho, on my own so i can actually appreciate it unbiased
I never watched this film but the way you talk about it and point things out gives me goosebumps. I also believe that the nervous kid is traumatized forever but is just smiling through the pain while him and the others are playing in the beach.
I Actually Watched This Movie Last Year And It Was Very Great And Underrated. I Also Did Love How It Features The Voices Of Terry Jones (Monty Pyton) And Alan Rickman (Die Hard)
Oh! I remember this movie. Well, little bits of it because I only watched it like twice when I was a kid. I remember really liking it and thinking it was so creepy. The scene that stayed with me though and the only one I remember clearly was the death scene of the main villain. The Spanish VA of Joe had this deep voice and I still remember his delivery when he is asked what happened when a fish drinks too much antidote and he answers "he becomes---HUMAN!" "and can a human breath underwater?", "Of course not!..." followed by shock and complete silence as human Joe drowns and his corpse float away. That whole sequence as the is transforming into a human all the way until he drowns was so creepy and so messed up and I remember loving it when I was a kid. This is really a hidden gem for the animation alone.
As a Brazilian I apreciate the recognition of the first (amd much better dubbed) of this beautiful movie. Really, this movie is hella gorgeous sometimes.
once again, you cave into the deepest reaches of my mind and find a super obscure movie i loved as a kid. thanks! also, id say ecen the title of the movie already tells us something about the tone, like you have "a fish tale" which is the most stereotypical and cliche animated kid's movie title i can think of, but then "help, im a fish" is surprisingly dark, conveying a sort of desperation

Oh wow. I had this on VHS and haven't seen it in forever. I watched the dannish dub as a kid, and I loved it!(im from denmark) but it was differcult to find it again, especially since my parents have been strictly against TV and movies for most of my childhood, but! It's a good movie! Everything hits, and it's so moody and good! I loved the scene were skaterboi got hurt(it was so well done!) and I'm glad I got to see this as a kid!
I had forgotten about this movie! Gotta love the visuals. Also your points about the color choices was something I hadn't noticed. Keep up the good work!
I loved this movie so much and the lens as money scene is constantly in my mind also the one of joe becoming human lives in my nightmares and the little girl saying "fly..." idk man I need to rewatch it rn
I saw this movie once when it was called “a fish tale” in elementary school and it gave me nightmares, from back then I only vaguely remember 4 things: starfish with pigtails, the title “a fish tale”, the 2 potions, and the nightmare inducing villain transformation
This came out when I was two years old and it's such a typically german childhood experience. Also I am once more unsurprised of my crippling fear of both climate change and the ocean, considering stuff like this was formative of my childhood.
I'll admit I watched it only because the animation was so good. In fact this is the only time I've ever looked up the name of an animator in the end credits.
You mean to tell me that this movie is an actual real movie that exists. Like really. This wasn't a weird dream I had after taking cough medicine. This is an actual movie that exists that I watched as a child.
I completely forgot about this movie until I saw one frame in this video! I've never seen it in English, but in my primary school, they played it in Spanish. I'm not sure how they selected their movies for us most of the time.
i had the same feeling... as if this was an example of lost media, when probably it isnt that hard to find if u look well enough! and indeed, theres something so strange in how it is a movie that just looks so dang good, has detailed backgrounds and fluid animation (that incoming storm scene, with the waves and the whipping wind?? omg) but isnt from any big studios. apart from that, and all my agreement that goodness gracious was joe the joker fish an absolute nightmare when i was a kid and this movie always stayed in my memory never for the fun or light moments but by the sheer cruelty and horror and tension of some of the scenes... i wanted to comment, i am so amazed at how often you touch on content and media that i dont feel is touched upon by any other channel, and now i wonder, may it be because youve been raised in brazil (as far as i understood it), and as an argentinean of around the same age we were exposed to very similar release times of particular movies and shows?? 🤔
Maybe! I don't really know what media the kids in other parts of the world were exposed to, and I'll admit I have a nostalgic bias towards things I saw as a child - but I can't really tell how region-specific my preferences are. I'm just glad other people saw the same stuff I did, and if they didn't, then I'm glad to expose them to some cool new movies!
Oh man, I grew up with this movie and watched it so much and absolutely adored it! I'm glad to see it still seems to hold up both in visuals and story :'DD
ah yes, that childhood movie where you see the villain drown on screen bc he drank too much human juice and developed lungs 8)))) if there was something that drilled into my head that Human Lungs Don't Work In Water as a wee kiddo, it was that scene. never noticed the unending sunset in the movie as a kid, but now that you pointed it out it just makes the entire thing even creepier and some (kinda literally) twilight zone shit. dear god.
I watched this movie when I was like 4 and I've loved it ever since, I watched it for the first time in the Spanish dub before it was released in the US, had no idea about the cursed cgi cover hahaha
I wonder if you've watched Cinderella Monogatari,an Italian-Japanese co-production. While the animation is not very good I love the interpretation of the story and it has the best chemistry between Cinderella and the Prince imo. Love if you review it!
no because i saw that movie one time as a kid in french while it was on tv, but i never got the title and have been thinking about it for years without ever being able to see it again, but as soon as i got your notification i went "no way, this is not what i think it is?!!!"
I am 100% certain that I never would have known about this movie without you making this video. (I VAGUELY remember that cgi cover and thinking"no thank you) I will try to find it streaming somewhere
WAIT OMG YOU'RE BRAZILIAN TOO?? just finished marathoning a bunch of your videos and i wasnt expecting the brazil mention. and ahh i've watched this movie far too many times to count
speaking of niche movies that were translated to portuguese, i cant forget "hugo o tesouro da amazônia" even though it looks like they only translated the third movie?
As a Brazilian who grew up with this movie (its so good!!!) and to this day loves it its quite weird how hard it is to find it this days. Also the brazilian portuguese name has a way better ring to it ;)
Weirdly I only saw this film because it was on a dvd with four other family films on it. My parents brought it for the My Little Pony, but one day I decided to give this movie a try, and it became a firm favourite. There's always been something about the high stakes, colours and background music that has a real tension about it.
I very vaguely remember catching the end of this film (like the last 20-25 minutes of it) years ago. It's occupied the same small part my brain as other incredibly obscure animated films that aired on Cartoon Network in the early-mid 2000s like Billionaire Dogs and the Fearless Four ever since lol.
I had first learned about this film from Bobsheaux and then saw Steve Reviews' video on this later. The opening song is now stuck in my head and has me nostalgic on Aqua's "Barbie Girl" song. Then there's Alan Rickman's version of "Intelligens"; am I the only one who can see Snape singing this while demonstrating a potion that will go berserk thanks to Draco and Harry?
I remember watching a tidbit of this movie and being incredibly terrified by it. I'm not sure what scene it was, I think the one when they turned into fish, I just remember really scared by how it was portrayed. I don't emember watching the rest of the movie
I find it funny that, after watching this video, I watched another one about this movie (a pretty recent one, too, only two weeks old), and that guy actually said he would have _preferred_ the original version of the movie.
This movie came out when I was 9 years old and I still have an old cassette record of it from one of the times it was shown on tv. I remember the title song from this movie being played A LOT on Danish radio - and I remember listening to a Danish version of the song as well that was only released as a bonus track on cd at the time (the English one being the most well known but the Danish one is good as well).
yes i agree.intelligence is a curse alongside with empathy and emotions.such things i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy :) i'm sorry but if someone thinks that intelligence is a curse.THAT persone dosent deserve to have intelligence.that same thing that allows you to enjoy art, science and anything that is possible do to havin intelligence.and i could argue that empathy and emotions are fare worse things to have because those causes pain and suffering in the first place.if we didn't have empathy and/or emotions,we would never cared something bad happening to us and/or someone else.

The animation style gave me that fever dream like deja vu thinking about We're Back! I need to watch that again too
I can certainly see that comparison, We’re back is a good film as well - I haven’t seen it in ages.
I loved this movie so much and the lens as money scene is constantly in my mind also the one of joe becoming human lives in my nightmares and the little girl saying "fly..." idk man I need to rewatch it rn
I loved this movie as a kid :D
For a long time I actually thought I had dreamt this movie. Until now.
This is one of my fave movies from my childhood!
Wow this review was so good, it made me appreciate one of my favorite childhood movies even more :]
Okay but the character animation in this movie is so freaking smooth and beautiful
That villain death is very dark. That’s all I remember
Man it was my favourite movie
Still love it, so fun and great music
I remember watching this!
I finally know what the name is
I...
I remember this-
THE MEMORIES ARE FLOODING BACK?!?!?!!!
i love that this movie admits the undeniable fact that orange is uncomfortable and bad and blue is comfortable and good
Oh man, I grew up with this movie and watched it so much and absolutely adored it! I'm glad to see it still seems to hold up both in visuals and story :'DD
I still remember this movie from my childhood! haven't seen it in years though xD it's great to be reminded of its existence again. great video!
ah yes, that childhood movie where you see the villain drown on screen bc he drank too much human juice and developed lungs 8)))) if there was something that drilled into my head that Human Lungs Don't Work In Water as a wee kiddo, it was that scene.
never noticed the unending sunset in the movie as a kid, but now that you pointed it out it just makes the entire thing even creepier and some (kinda literally) twilight zone shit. dear god.
I watched this movie when I was like 4 and I've loved it ever since, I watched it for the first time in the Spanish dub before it was released in the US, had no idea about the cursed cgi cover hahaha
THIS MOVIE WAS MY ENTIRE CHILDHOOD - Then again I'm Danish lol
I wonder if you've watched Cinderella Monogatari,an Italian-Japanese co-production.
While the animation is not very good I love the interpretation of the story and it has the best chemistry between Cinderella and the Prince imo.
Love if you review it!
THIS WAS MY CHILDHOOD. I remember watching it in spanish. The song was a bop as well.
no because i saw that movie one time as a kid in french while it was on tv, but i never got the title and have been thinking about it for years without ever being able to see it again, but as soon as i got your notification i went "no way, this is not what i think it is?!!!"
I am 100% certain that I never would have known about this movie without you making this video. (I VAGUELY remember that cgi cover and thinking"no thank you) I will try to find it streaming somewhere
Us British 90’s kids loved this film! 🐟
Also the brazilian portuguese name has a way better ring to it ;)
Oh god, yeah i remember it! I think I drove my dad insane by watching it over and over X)
Weirdly I only saw this film because it was on a dvd with four other family films on it. My parents brought it for the My Little Pony, but one day I decided to give this movie a try, and it became a firm favourite. There's always been something about the high stakes, colours and background music that has a real tension about it.
I loved this movie as a kid I rented it out so many times
I was thinking about this film the other day
I very vaguely remember catching the end of this film (like the last 20-25 minutes of it) years ago.
I remember the title song from this movie being played A LOT on Danish radio - and I remember listening to a Danish version of the song as well that was only released as a bonus track on cd at the time (the English one being the most well known but the Danish one is good as well).
yess I'm obsessed with this movie, I just wished I actually grew up with this movie instead of finding it on youtube when I was like 17 lol
bruhhhh i didnt know anyone else new about this
thank you
Three of my favorite genders: Help, I'm, and Fish
Just to clarify, there are types of fishing that are considered as extreme sports
Would you please watch DreamWorks' “Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron”?
yes i agree.intelligence is a curse alongside with empathy and emotions.such things i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy :)
i'm sorry but if someone thinks that intelligence is a curse.THAT persone dosent deserve to have intelligence.that same thing that allows you to enjoy art, science and anything that is possible do to havin intelligence.and i could argue that empathy and emotions are fare worse things to have because those causes pain and suffering in the first place.if we didn't have empathy and/or emotions,we would never cared something bad happening to us and/or someone else.
