Pretty neat little game, and I agree with a lot of Manly's points about Uri's writing and the comparison between her older and newer games. The Paranoiac remake is probably my favourite of Uri's games, followed by Mermaid Swamp and The Crooked Man.

Exactly, my problem with this game is that there's way too many holes in the story. For the story itself to work you gotta assume that everyone in that mansion had like 20 iq. I can understand things like loyalty and following your master until the bitter end for example, but since the butler made up his mind about turning the guy in, he could easily pretend like he's doing something like "sure master, i'll go check the windows/doors" then just get out of there and call the cops.
Pretty much every bit of the story is setup in a way so that it only works if everyone is an idiot. Kinda like the bad ending where they couldn't leave the basement because they couldn't use the elevator. I'm pretty sure 6 people (and one of them was quite strong) could force open a shitty old elevator and just climb to the ground floor. But nope, let's lay down and starve to death. Imo this is the worst of all Uri's work, and I don't feel bad for saying that since Uri himself probably thinks the same.

I definitely agree with many of the commented assessments of this particular game and Uri’s overall compendium of titles as a writer and developer. Though I’m personally less familiar with Uri’s most recent works, I would say that The Crooked Man, Paranoiac, and Insanity all demonstrate interesting subversions of certain narrative elements that are categoric to the horror genre. Specifically, despite their introductions depicting rather archetype or classic horror scenarios, moments of greater emotional depth and humanization, predominantly centered around the primary antagonist and their respective motivations, eventually precipitate as the plot progresses. Within the short, decently-paced experience Insanity provided, I appreciated that Mr. Murai was not merely relegated to a simple, shadowy murderer who prays upon intruders indiscriminately without cause or reason outside of pure sadism or some nondescript “madness”. In Murai’s case, it was compelling to witness the degradation of his sanity as a result of his inability to accept his daughter’s death and the severe cognitive dissonance which rendered him dangerously obsessive and protective over his research to bring her back. I will assert, though, that there were some contrived inconsistencies in Murai’s awareness of his own actions and mental state, and the writing for his arc across the game’s various endings could have been further polished to more poignantly represent his confusion and desperation over the continued inefficacy of his work. Still, the plot and characterizations were generally quite solid for one of Uri’s more rudimentary games.
Thank you as always for the wonderful narrations and interesting thoughts. The Avengers analogy was also particularly great, especially to a Winter Soldier fan like myself haha

It's definitely not a clever or outstanding story, but for what it was, it was told pretty well. The only thing I'm not sold on is Murai's rather sudden change of heart after Kyoko's hannibal lecture, but having them continue to persuade him for possibly hours would've been annoying.
Other than that, the second run could've gone with different story markings, like the potion actually working on Yanase, or Murai killing Ryoji and Riho exacting revenge in turn, or something like that. The way it was done, the new scenes of the second run don't really add anything new to the story itself.

    _Tragic backstory_
I liked this game very much. I don't know if we needed all of Murai's line-by-line backstory in this second playthrough - only because the beginning was so well-written. You could see what he must have been feeling and thinking.
It stands in stark contrast to some other modern rpgmaker games which barely have any plot other than the one the player makes up in their head to make sense of the overly cutesy-poo, ruffled, German/Latin non sequitur-laden mishmash they're playing.
The other interesting part of this game was switching between the characters which gave you different scenes and clues to resolve the one chase scene.
As much as I loved the story and puzzles of the Crooked Man, having to hit him _exactly_ 15 times with the crowbar was kind of un-fun. So actually, I would rank this up along with Mermaid Swamp and Paranoiac as my favorites of Uri's games. Great playthrough and thank you for showing us all endings, as always!

So the second playthrough doesn't change the story any but instead gives us more context and explains what Shigeki was doing throughout the game. Not a bad bonus for replaying the game, though I kind of prefer what Uri did for the second playthrough of the Hanged Man. Still, not fair to compare a remake of their first game against their most recent game. Overall, Insanity is pretty dang good for a first title. Kenta's still the best character for his faked death gambit, but the cast as a whole is fairly good.
On your point of Uri's earlier works being better than the more recent ones, I can see the argument being made. I like the Strange Men series in its entirety, but the Crooked Man has always been my favorite and I've been continuously impressed by these remakes of Uri's older titles. There is a distinct difference in the two halves of their history.

Not to mention how infuriating these extra scenes are thanks to the other family members being absolute idiots and confessing their plans straight to the psychopath. I can look past the kids leaving Shigeki in the storage room when they go to rescue Ryouji, but DAMN a little deception goes a long way.
